Re:Will Microsoft call on Burson-Marsteller to fix
First of all, are you 12 years old? if not then you should probably be informed that the SECOND you start typing "M$" the first thing 90% of the people that read these posts will do is say "douchebag" and pass right on by, so you could have the most insightful post in the world but nobody will give a fuck because you just labeled yourself as this guy aka "basement loser troll".
Second if you would have read my GP post I had already answered that this is NOT the "Star Trek Rule" as the Windows Blue memo makes it clear that as long as Ballmer is in charge there will be NO going back, its gonna be full retard ahead with MSFT making MSFT hardware running MSFT software sold in MSFT stores for a higher than Apple markup, because "God damn it we're better than Apple and we need to get the stock price up!"
Finally you are again wrong if you are referring to Win 7 over Vista, they did a complete gutting of most of the Vista code, new kernel, new memory subsystem, new driver subsystem, even the few things they kept from Vista like Readyboost and UAC got pretty big rewrites. Comparing Vista to 7 is like saying "Well Win98 and 2K3 Server are the same, its made by the same company so anybody who bought it was a sucker" while ignoring the incredible number of changes under the hood. Vista in many ways was WinME, where they had a couple of good ideas that were executed poorly and ultimately ended up with a broken mess whereas 7 like XP took those few good ideas and a bunch of major under the hood rewrites and rebuilds to make a truly solid product. In fact the only other MSFT product I can compare Win 7 to is 2K3 X64 workstation, aka WinXP X64, because in both cases you have a product that is just so much more rock solid than anything they had previously released it just isn't even funny. I have seen plenty of Vista BSODs working on customers machines because Vista screwed itself up but only with XP X64 and Win 7 have I never seen a BSOD that wasn't related to a hardware failure.

Re:Don't get it
The video game industry was waiting for that one, don't worry.
:) Oh there's a shooting. When will people actually link that to violent video games ... Oh here it is.I like what Penny Arcade did there : http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2012/12/24

My Nominations and Choices
1) Best overall web comic series of 2012. (Any web comic that produced content in 2012): Gunnerkrigg Court is a brilliant webcomic that has a compelling plot, interesting characters and art that has developed superbly since the comic's beginnings.
2) Funniest web comic of 2012. (This one represents the single funniest comic of any web comic series.): Evil Inc. got the most laughs out of me this year, even if a lot of the humour was a bit Dad-joke-ish. Runners up would include: Penny Arcade , XKCD , Scandinavia and the World and Overcompensating .
3) Best art in a web comic of 2012. (Web comic from 2012 with the most amazing art ever): Dresden Codak is, without any doubt, the repository of some of the most geekiest and beautiful artwork the web has ever seen. Runners up would include: Namesake , Lackadaisy Cats , Sore Thumbs and Avengelyne
4) Web comic that was most relevant to you in 2012: Real Life , because his adventures with Harper are roughly mirroring my adventures with my daughter Hailey.
Honorable Mentions (because they'd likely win categories if there were a couple more here): Bad Machinery (Best Story), Eerie Cuties (Best Black & White), Three Panel Soul (Best Drama) and Wapsi Square (Best Main Character), and Sinfest (Lifetime Achievement) among others.

Re:What's off limits for a game? definitn. of "gam
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet." (Juliet)
So what's in a game? The subject has been discussed by folks far more eloquent and persuasive than I; but hey, this is Slashdot so what the hell. In some ways trying to define what 'game' means is akin to defining art; grasping at the wind. I think you're pretty close to the mark with your latter definition, although as sibling posters suggest the win condition is not necessary, and the concept of winning itself has been toyed with as a mechanism (see UnwinnableByDesign). "Fun" is hardly a necessity either, witness RPG grinds, for example. And how 'fun' would Contra be without UUDDLRLRBA?
That leaves "simulated environment", which I think approaches the heart fo the matter. Games (not just video games here) are a simulacrum, an approximation of a scenario. Some are more complex than others - Snakes and Ladders versus Dwarf Fortress or MilSim-du-jour - but all distill a scenario/environment into a set of rules. Fun and winning are usually part of the arrangement, but not by necessity.
Sibling post hit the mark too in saying that a significant proportion of gaming is there as a vehicle for storytelling. It's easy to be cynical as there are some bad stories out there. But there is good storytelling too, if that's your thing. Planescape: Torment* has a particular focus on story; and there are times where the line between 'game' and 'interactive story' are pretty heavily blurred. Dear Esther is an example which PA Report recommends quite highly:
Dear Esther is a $10 PC [note: currently on sale on Steam for £1.74 for the next two hours at time of writing] experience that toys with the concepts that make, or don’t make, a game. You are a man exploring a deserted island, and every so often you’ll trigger a voice over that helps to explain what you’re doing there and describes other characters you never see. It’s a desolate, lonely game that funnels you into one specific ending that’s impossible to escape. It takes around 90 minutes to finish, depending on how much of the island you choose to explore.
At the end of a day if someone creates something that is a representation of something with at least some semblance of interaction, and calls it a game I'm quite happy to believe them until proven otherwise.
*Planescape was recently discussed on
/. and it was mentioned that GOG had it for ten bucks, which was nifty. Now they've discounted it to five bucks, which is at least twice as nifty by my calculations. -

Ignore NPD reports
While The PA Report postdeals specifically with games and how they are just not tracked properly by NPD, the same principle applies to any software: the retail store aspect of sales is small and getting smaller every day. Ignore NPD, they really don't matter anymore.

Re:Will it work with glasses?
Impossible? Care to explain why?
Carmack seems to think otherwise:
"While the headset is light and fits well, the player can't wear glasses under the current design. If you move the display further from your head you lose field of view. There are things they can do with sharpness in the software, or they can create adjustable optics that remove the need for glasses, but those are problems that will be solved in the retail version. "Astigmatism I could correct for with a fragment program," Carmack told me without skipping a beat. This is the world we live in; your vision problems can be solved in software."

Re:I can assure you...
Well Sparky WHY THE FUCK should I care, really? Linux hasn't done jack shit except arrange deck chairs on the sinking ship for a fucking decade, the ONLY gains it has EVER made was when Google bitchslapped the devs and just took the thing for themselves, so why the fuck should myself or the average users I sell to give a rat's ass about Secureboot? Oh the horror, while hundreds of millions won't have to worry about rootkits and boot sector viruses the 0.7% of the planet's population that actually run linux on a desktop will have to...gasp!...switch a setting in the BIOS! Oh the humanity, won't someone think of the Linux users too damned stupid to flip a BIOS switch?
And for the love of God, you are SCARED of Ballmer, really? the guy whose list of failures makes Uwe Boll look like Coppola? Ohhh he won't let us hack their ARM tablet...so the fuck what? like we aren't ASS DEEP in ARM tablets right now! You wanna slap Linux on an ARM tablet just fucking buy one of the bazillion on chinamart and STFU already, its not like its MSFT or the highway ya know. what is sad but telling is this is the SECOND big flaming turd that Ballmer has squeezed out and linux STILL won't gain dick, its like MSFT gives you a 30 yard head start and instead of just waltzing across the finish line you shoot yourselves in the foot with yet another God damned fork or rebuild of shit that didn't need rebuilding in the first place, then you sit down in the middle of the track to jerk off to a bash script...hell its almost like kicking a retard, its just too damned easy to make fun of this level of FAIL.
BTW you wanna know what you and your little attitude sound like to me? Here ya go yet another bleeting fanboi that hasn't had to deal with real people in their whole damned life, just sitting in their basement thinking they are "sticking it to teh man" by running Linux on some dumpster dived P4...You have NO marketshare, NO major B&M carries your product, hell even Dell has to run their own badly out of date repo to keep Linux from shitting on the drivers...why should I care about your product again?

Re:No silly
I would like to post a couple of very interesting links

He makes some very interesting arguments against making games purely for the sake of "Fun." Does the game really have to be about fun? Look at Indigo Prophecy (PS2) or Heavy Rain (PS3). Even Metal Gear Solid, without the guns, stealth, and violence, could have been a very good interactive movie. I would have payed money to watch as snake goes to battle, only to die a little inside. We should really break this habit of making games fun and start exploring other aspects like engaging narrative. We could free the market, setting new standards for better games. -
Re:so what if they're minors?
During the years that I played WoW, I went through many guilds that had black people, and all of them would regularly use the N word. I asked one why it doesn't bother him, and he said it only bothers white people.
Then on top of it, they were always making jokes about Obama, racist ones included.
I don't really think malice is the intent in most of them, I think it's more a symptom of this:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19
People just like to joke around, and if somebody else takes offense, then proceed to troll them. I'm no exception myself, we had a palestinian kid in one of my guilds who was always saying perverted things to any girls in ventrilo, and had this really creepy pedophile voice. I always referred to him as the pedophile suicide bomber. It was all in good fun, much as I think these blogs are.
What I find ironic though is how many on slashdot look up to anonymous, but don't realize that most of them hang out on 4chan and encyclopediadramatica, both of which regularly both feature and encourage racist material. In fact, a few politicians in Australia tried to ban ED for its article on Aboriginals.

Re:Miranda Rights v2.0
Obviously the statement says more about me than either of you, though one thing it doesn't say is that I didn't take your opinion at face value. If that had been the case, I wouldn't have bothered replying in the first place. The Internet is full of these people, so even sometimes tenuous reputations of a single account which cannot be followed off-site is worth more than it being absent. That shows a person is willing to stand behind what they say, and the manner in which they say it. Assuming you are the same AC, your response further underscores my point, especially given the continued lack of any attempt at civility.
Being offensive and patronizing is easy when you don't have to worry about knowledge of your behavior following you around. It must be an interesting world you live in where the adult thing to do is throw insults anonymously. I'm glad I don't live there.

Re:Trolling?
Yes but sadly we see more and more of this, sick little maladjusted fucks that decide for whatever reason YOU are the cause of some problem in their lives or the world would be better off without you and will go VERY stalkerish on you.
In fact as someone who recently had to deal with something not as sick, but creepy and weird where some asshole was hacking into a nice former customer of mine. this guy is soooo fucking bland I can't imagine how he could do anything but bore someone to death but this little prick would take over his computer and wipe his files, trash the OS, even pop up a box calling him filthy names. I have to thank the slashdot community for when i put up a list of what i had done trying to stop this guy with no luck you guys pointed out things I had not thought to check and thanks to you I was able to stop him, so thanks guys.
But what we old greybeards think of when we think of the word troll and what we are seeing now? Two totally different things. Hell I had one last year that followed me around the net for a solid year, making piles of accounts everywhere I went. For what purpose? just so he could post a response to everything I said with the sentence "Die you fat fucker DIE!". That's it, just that sentence over and over and over, across dozens of websites. While it never phased me, when you think about how much work he had to do, searching the web for every place he could possibly find where I was, spending a good 15 minutes or more making fake accounts...just for that sentence.
We are seeing more and more sick puppies out there, personally i think its just what happens when one of Gabe's fuckwads loses touch with anything other than the little bubble they create for themselves on the web. I'm sure if a shrink got a hold of this nutbag he would believe that he was actually the moral one here, that Traynor had somehow "insulted" him, dared to enter the space HE owned, or some other bullshit that to HIM would be perfectly rational, just as the cockbag that trashed a couple of years worth of data on a nice bland nobody's PC probably felt it was somehow "justified". Which just goes to show how truly warped and twisted those without a firm grasp of reality can get when they live in cyberspace.

Re:Calm before the hyperboleIf you take the time to look, I was logged in for that post. You spent alot of time on personal attacks based on that one error, so you really are starting to sound like the news company that you hate so much.
Please re-read my post. As low as your reading comprehension seems to be, it's only 3 direct sentences. Let me break it down for you again:- You take any opportunity to let people know you hate Fox News, even if you have to take someone out of context to bring it up.

Re:Wow
Awww...did the poor wittle FOSSie fail to find even a SINGLE CITATION to line up with his delusions? While I can easily provide multiple citations to back myself up? See that is what happens when one has REALITY on one's side, we don't have to call people names like shill, we can just provide proof to back up our assertions! And HOW is their assertion bogus? Because it doesn't fit in with your fairy dust plans? Welcome to REALITY! Do you have ANY proof their numbers are wrong? that wikipedia's numbers are wrong? Anything at all besides 'Linux is teh leet so it must be teh popular!"
But lets face it Alex, we ALL know the truth by now, your wittle name calling, you inability to back up a single thing you say with citations, your constant moving the goalposts, I think everyone here can plainly see that this is YOU and this is your impotent nerd rage

Re:First Intel, now AMD?
Websites are all fanboys, actual DEVELOPERS OF THE FUCKING PRODUCTS are "reference to authority"...do you realize that you have done EXACTLY like a religious loonie and made little logic hoops that no sane and rational argument can possible contradict? Hmmm...where have I heard this before? Oh that's right its the circle of the loon which is so fricking old its one of the first TMs. Congrats on sticking with the classic Alex.
Enjoy your crazy you fricking FOSSie, pretend the numbers don't suck balls which for a product that has been given away FREE FOR TWENTY YEARS is almost laughably pathetic, but of course i'm sure you'll talk about all the invisible people that aren't counted, or come up with some lame ass excuse about how the air traffic controllers in Zimbabwe use linux (like anybody gives a shit or that it has shit to do with desktops) but you go right back to living that delusion Alex...oh and watch out for the black choppers.
BTW if you want to see how the world sees YOU personally? Here you go which give the Penny Arcade guys credit, they fucking NAILED the typical FOSSie, basement dwelling and all.
-
Re:Sure!
Wow, you really WANT a fresh bitchslapping, don't you? Challenge accepted!
Lets see...you have Electronic Arts using DRM, we have Ubisoft still requiring online activation if not always on, and of course the current Linux darling Valve which is you'll stop slurping the GNUoolaid from RMS then you'd know that Steam is THE BIGGEST DRM SYSTEM ON THE PLANET DUMBASS that makes its own secure executable which is LOCKED TO A PLAYER...hmm...locked to a player so nobody can share that, what is it? Sounds familiar, could it be...DRM? Dum dum DUMBASS.
But of course all YOU can do is scream NIGGER which in FOSSie language is called PaidMicrosoftShill, but hey, if your kind didn't act like religious zealots then we couldn't enjoy laughing at you, which we do Alex, we ALL laugh at you, at how you can't even see reality when it is cockslapping you in the face, how no matter how broken a mess the devs hand you you say "Oh please good sir, may I have another?" that's what makes it so damned funny!
-
Re:First Intel, now AMD?
Oh wow Alex being a FOSSie and throwing insults, surprise surprise. Hey here is a video of RMS you'll find enlightening and as a public service allow me to post some facts (with links, which of course you can NEVER provide) to give those that aren't sucking GNUoolaid some information about the product you keep championing blindly like a Moonie following his master.
How about a nice kernel exploit? Or how about the guy that wrote EEEBuntu saying Ubuntu sucks? which considering they are the current savior of Linux kinda tells you something.
How sad was it that even when a bug was spreading through OSX there were writers pointing out that's no reason to torture yourself with Linux , after all even a virus ridden OSX actually runs which is more than most distros LOL! But hey, you can always tell them they can fix it otherwise they don't need that right? LOL! And I noticed you just couldn't fricking resist screaming "Nigger!" which in FOSSie is done by screaming PaidMicrosoftShill, hey you think you could throw in one more FOSSie cliche please? Then I'll have a FOSSie Flush ROFL!
But if you didn't have cliches and your pathetic attempts at insults why then you might have to have an independent thought and realize what everybody knows that even when MSFT put out a universally reviled OS you STILL got curb stomped, does that give you ANY clues? or all they all brainwashed by those black choppers that have been following you? Hell when the Chinese were given the choice of your "free OS" or pirating Windows they chose the latter even if it meant staying on XP and using IE fricking 6, LOL! Does that ring ANY bells? A smart person would say "what are we doing wrong the other guy is doing right?" but a FOSSie who is just like a Moonie in that they blindly follow, instead says "Its all a conspiracy! They are all shills keeping the masses from true salvation!" and then you wonder why we all laugh at you because you DON'T Listen, you DON'T learn, and Torvalds could take a big steaming dump and hand it to you and you'd thank him for his generous gift. So enjoy that fresh bitchslapping loony, enjoy the fact that the world really doesn't care...but I do, I enjoy slapping you, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
-
Re:I'll suck your dick.

-
Re:Hmm...
Sure, its unfortunate our enemies have strengthened ties with one another, but my first thought on hearing the news was this comic:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/12/05 -
Re:I don't get it
You DO realize that every time someone like you screams "Shill!" when someone points out a legitimate beef you make the community look like this guy right?
As for why basic usability features don't get done, its simply human nature or as i like to call it "the busted shitter problem". It has been said time and time again its the last 20% that takes 80% of the work but with FOSS you have the busted shitter problem in that releasing NEW software is FUN, while spending years doing bug fixes, regression testing, and QC? Is about as fun as getting a root canal at the DMV. To hunt down that bug and fix it will probably take a good year of hard work that is gonna suck balls, so why in the hell should somebody do a lousy job like that for free?
And THAT is the problem in a nutshell. Apple and MSFT pay millions of dollars to developers to do all those truly shit jobs so those bugs don't end up affecting the end user, whereas the devs for a lot of the stuff in Linux are doing the work gratis so the truly shit jobs aren't done.
Maybe a combination carrot and stick approach is required? Have a bounty for the worst bugs, were people donate to get them fixed, and at the same time have a set schedule, say 5 years, per software release when it comes to things that the system counts on. That way the devs can't just keep putting out new versions willy nilly because the distros won't add them to the repo and would have an incentive to actually work on what they have instead of through the baby out with the bathwater like they did with the DEs and sound subsystem.
Because there are plenty of guys like me that would be happy to put your product on new systems and give you a support network like Apple has with the Apple stores but obvious major bugs like that being released in supposed "ready for the user" software just makes the whole system look second rate and it makes after market support a nightmare and too costly for the little guys.

:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/8/11/
I... just don't understand how this kind of outrage works. How can someone construe the comic as saying that rape is fun or something to mock? They point out that most med-fan video games give us a disney-land version of a medieval universe where there is a lot of unacceptable things happening : slavery, murder, torture, violent monsters, snatched children, eternal damnation, violent battles, lost limbs and, yes rape. I just don't get it : the guy is a slave, chained, whipped all day long, can be killed when his master wants, can be tortured for fun, and the thing people focus on is... rape?
So yes, if you understood this as an endorsement of rape you clearly missed the point totally and it is fair to make fun of you in a non-offensive and totally tongue-in-cheek way. -

Re:Am I getting old?
Never heard of it
We're all getting old.
Penny Arcade is a gamer webcomic, I believe the first gamer webcomic -- if not the first, then definitely the most successful.
E3 was an expo for Electronic Entertainment (games), but a few years back they decided to throw out the dirty hippies (gamers), which understandably pissed a large number of people off. On the other hand, it was completely out of control and the focus (a press event) was lost.
So, deciding that was quite absurd, the Penny Arcade guys decided to have their own Expo, and the timing was just right that all the people not allowed to go to E3, went to PAX. And it kind of exploded from there. PAX is now "the" place to get hype about your upcoming game / console / etc set up, especially among the actual consumers.
It's also a great place to trade Pokemon and Dragon Quest 9 maps.

And everybody is going to embrace "Facebook as a porn payment", because there's no way FB will ever mine the data they gathered through your sales for marketing and advertising purpose~ They've always respected users privacy~ </sarcasm>
Seriously? I think you're right. Idiots will flock to it to buy lots of stupid stuff where privacy and anonymity would have been preferred.
FB's marketing department will mine this data like hell.
Cue in embarrassing target advertising and suggestions.
(Ob Penny Arcade ref)Or even malicious apps:
- we've currently reached the point where "click jacking" on FB is now considered by lambda users as "just happening" and part of the background noise. Its accepted to be just part of the landscape, the way SPAM is for e-mails (before massive efforts in filtering and bot-net shutdowns managed to curb it a little bit).
(Am I the last human being on FB who doesn't fall for the "click on the moving 'play' button to prove you're not a bot in order to see teh lezboz video?!?)
- it's pretty much easy to get people to friend a page or add an application through click jacking.
- a malicious application could then exploit the gained privilege to access user info (Through advanced access with regular FB API granted during the click jacking, or through exploits. That has already happened before).
- mine and infer porn habits from the data.
- blackmail/scam/shame the poor victim.Next step for Facebook:
Now they just need to buy a few websites like "Adult Finder", cross reference their databases, and they'll become the newest biggest pimping infrastructure on the net since Craiglist had to close its adult section. And the blackmailer/scammer need to start collaborating with divorce-specialised lawyers.

Re:100% - 7% Paying != 93% Piracy
Resale value affects the price you can charge. Second-hand sales go to the company as a % of what they were able to charge at first sale.
Arguing if that should be called 'direct' or 'indirect' is a sideshow quibble.
Actual arguments against that value that second-hand sales do generate for a company are:
- Games have a limited interest period for most gamers. Within a year, most will not be interested in returning to the game. However, they also sell their old games to buy new ones...
- Second-hand games are largely untarnished. Unlike many used products, they have just as much life left in them as new versions. These second-hand games compete directly with new game sales for our entertainment hours. However the "life left" isn't entirely true, as second-hand games miss out on the initial social hype period (gotta play what the other kids talk about) and the initial online experience (gotta play with the other kids).
It's a complex dynamic. But what game companies want is for you to buy one-time tickets to an experience that expires. Second-hand sales instead force them to
/compete/ by bringing out great new games consistently.(And
/fuck/ Penny Arcade for simply hand-waving about this instead of thinking about it, issue for issue.)
