Re:An open letter to the anti-trolls.
I, for one, welcome competent people but I do give a damn what plumbing they've got...but it doesn't affect my opinion of their competence.
When people make hurtful personal remarks, sure, that's immature, and shouldn't enter into a discussion on what is basically a profile of a person as a hacker. I'm equally offended when people make fun of RMSs beard or Tron dude's camel toe..
I find girls more attractive than guys. I don't think she's a better hacker (well..maybe a better social-engineer:o) just because I think she's attractive. Likewise, I don't think RMS is any less of a hacker just because I don't find him attractive(I'm sure he'll be upset:o)
But people do notice these things, and in an environment where anonymity is so readily available, you can't expect them not to pass comment. -
Not bad...
the art's pretty good, and he manages to get his point across without swearing every other word (probably has something to do with the fact that he's an english prof). Some of his humor lacks the necessary punch, though... he's got a way to go before he dethrones the current champions in the comic-strip videogame commentary arena.

Re:Good effort to fight spam and malware
My partner is kind, intelligent, funny -- everything that really matters in a relationship.
If you say so. I personally find it to be rather shallow if those three things alone are all that keep you from running off with some other guy.
I'd say that if there's "nothing funny" about getting into a relationship with anybody, it would be somebody so obsessive and *shallow* as to reject an extremely good partner because he doesn't compile Linux apps.
I love the irony of you calling me shallow for merely alluding to a deal-breaking attitude problem when you admit to judging someone wholly based on 3 completely relative attributes. Regardless, you didn't read the target of my distain correctly. Specific technical skills are not the issue, which I'll detail in another reply.
It certainly sounds like you're reinforcing the stereotype that Mac geeks are a bunch of elitist jerks.
Could be. Does me liking this PA support or refute your hypothesis?

Re:MS seems to be doing a lot of this lately...
It's the
.net runtime framework i'm in morbid fear of.
So are you scared of glibc? libc? the MS c++ stdlibraries? MFC classes? Because they're the same thing buddy! I think you don't understand what
.net is..
And yes, I do give MCSE's a bad name; I've run slackware since version 1.2 ('93-'94?), and if a biz client is running winXP, I refuse to work on it.
Woopie, good for you. I've run FreeBSD for 7 years and RedHat since version 4, if you want to play a pissing contest, we're all dorks here on slashdot
:-p And as for refusing to run XP? THat's honestly your loss-XP is far and away my favorite MS OS I've ever run. My uptime is 19 days as of right now, if you were wondering.
I resent the "giving pagans a bad name" statement, though.
Well if all pagan libertarians are happy with being paranoid anti-MS zealots, then I guess I complimented them.

Ahem. Ingenius, my ass.
Having tried to play MGS and MGS2, I'd have to agree that the MGS creators are a bunch of idiots - and that the games themselves are just really, really stupid. -
Re:In other News...
That's the most ridiculous post I've ever read on Slashdot. It's probably a troll; I mean, the majority of your sentences are coherent, but there's just no logic from sentence to sentence. I imagine you like this guy, only with foam coming out of his mouth as well. But I'll respond anyway.
You claim that Microsoft keeps stealing our ideas, that if they didn't have their patents, but we had patents, we'd win in the marketplace. Or something like that. It's not really clear. But allow me to refute that anyway. Look at GNOME. Look at Mono. Look at KDE. Now look at Microsoft Windows. Who is innovating, again? Who is copying who? And don't give me that crap about the BSD TCP/IP stack. Whether or not Microsoft "stole it," I'd hardly say that the TCP/IP stack is the "vast majority of [Microsoft's] 'innovation'". Whether or not you like their products, you'd have to be foolish to claim that all their good ideas came from open source software.
It sounds like what you're calling for is a GPL for patents. I'm not sure how you'd word it. You can't sell products using this patent unless you release the source code under the GPL? Something like that? Get a clue. Not everyone likes the GPL. BSD folk will want to release code using your patents. Mozilla will want to include your new algorithms and whatnot. People such as myself will want to put code using your patents in the public domain. Oh, but too bad. We should extend the GPL virus.
And if you meant that instead we should licence the patent to anyone, what's the point of paying the fees? You might as well just publish your software and not worry about paperwork. You'll have established prior art for the future by doing so. After all, patents are relatively easy to knock down with obvious prior art. It's the "obvious" part that's tough to claim.
But let's say that we still think patents will help the open source community. Let's say that we manage to come up with some innovative idea and we patent it. Let's say Microsoft really wants/needs this technology. What will we gain? Microsoft has the funds to buy us off fairly easily. They also have the funds to get the patent invalidated without much hassle. But the small business software writer does not. He just can't use our technology. So he suffers, and Microsoft wins the day again. Who have we helped, again?
No, patents for open source ideas is a horrible idea. It would merely make writing software more difficult for everyone, and especially for non-GPL fans. It would delay the development of open source software, hurting one of the key benefits of open source -- fast turnaround and constant development. And in the end, it would solve nothing.

How is this different from the Penny Arcade thing?Remember the Strawberry Shortcake debacle? Were "Gabe & Tycho" just stupid? (said with affection, of course, for their appreciated contribution to my world)
I thought the reasoning behind their pulling the strip was that they were accused of parodying American McGee using American Greetings material. I don't know how it all worked out, but if there is actually real legal precedent here then parodying Columbine with a credit card ad might be in the same boat. Not that I agree that it should be, but precedent can be the basis of law after all...

Yorda was a pathetic character, useless in every possible way. Just when you start getting up to a good jog, she slows you down by jerking on your arm. I swore if she did that again I'd find a way to yank hers out of its socket and club her to death with it.

Why?
Alright, I actually RTFA and I still don't get it. Scammers are abusing TTY services (or, more accurately, web-based applications intended to replace Ye Olde Teletypes). What I still don't understand is why?
I suppose the scammers realize their accents or (relatively) poor grasp of English might make the recipient of the calls suspicious, but it seems that TTY calls are rare enough to garner attention of their own. Are the scammers that short-sighted?
Or is it related to Penny Arcade's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory and the scammers don't have the nerve to try pulling the scam "face-to-face"?
At any rate, how much to these TTY terminals cost? -

Re:what about other drivers?
But isn't peer pressure a good motivator?
Not if you don't give a damn about your peers, which is very easy to do when you have no personal relationship with any of the people driving around you. Hence the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. Road rage is already a big enough problem, do we really want to aggrivate it? -

Of course, I'm a fan of the original XBox controllers (not the dinky S style). I suppose me and this guy here were seperated at birth. ::shrug:: -

Why not use these skills for something useful ?I know the 'subject' seems flamebait, but let me explain.
Linux on an Ipod is basically pointless. Especially on this very device, which is what hip people buy in the first place (don't get me wrong, I have one). That doesn't mean people can't tweak with it, but it's not that useful, since the geek population using iPods is outnumbered by the common consumers.
On the other hand, what about making a file browser that allow you to go through the files you stored on your pod ? I usually store isos, books, games, and the like on my 30Gb, and I really would like to be able to rename, delete, transfer to my comp directly from the iPod...
Of course, I could move my ass, but I'm not a techie. My 2 cents.

TV==bad, Computer==goodSay what you want about TV causing ADHD - its fast switching topics are designed for short attention span, and as such will cause children to adapt to its style, causing inability to focus. However, video games (for children, especially learning games) demand focus from children and are probably beneficial in the same way that mobiles and toys and other baby things are. Having a computer will also get them used to dealing with technology, something which nowadays is vital. I remember I had a Commodore 64 when I was 5 and would just love to sit there and program on it and play video games.
The difference really is that television is aimed at consumers, and consumers are really at heart people with ADHD with lots of money to spend. Video games on the other hand are an involved activity, no more dangerous than solving the Junior Jumble or pushing blocks through holes - provided that you give the children children's software. Don't let your kid end up like this.

Re:Moo. No, really. Not sure what you mean about McDonalds. I'm a vegetarian. And I'm not servicing anyone or anyting, just stating an opinion.
No one asked Netflix to redefine the video rental business, but they did, and they've pretty much toppled Blockbuster. What Microsoft is doing is to enable the "celestial jukebox," which has been talked about for many years - so in that sense, people have asked for it. Sure, I wish it wasn't Microsoft, and I'm sure others will provide the technology as well. But separate out your hate of Microsoft from the value of the product itself. Access to basically all the music in the world, anytime, anywhere, for a flat $10 per month. As a huge music fan, that's about the greatest thing I've ever heard of. To pretend otherwise is, well, Slashdot groupthink, exactly what you're accusing me of. Pot, kettle, black.
Oh, and by the way, the use of "M$" look really doesn't help your cause.

Re:Slashdotters just can't understand Gnome
The majority of the posts I'm seeing that are 'anti-gnome' stem from the sheer fact that all of you out there are more than just computer users; you are programmers, devleopers, engineers, students, enthusiests, etc. Gnome is not directly targeted toward you.
Oh. I see. It's not for us. OK. Hmm. I guess we shouldn't criticize.
