I happened to see that Nick was cancelling Zim about two days ago via a notice on this fan site. They have set up a petition that you can sign to help show your support of Invader Zim.

I strongly recommend that people go there and voice their support and desire for this series to be continued. To me, Invader Zim is cutting-edge humor on the level of other cult classics like "Space Ghost Coast to Coast." It would be a shame to see it die this young. If enough people speak out Nick might realize the risk they took with this show paid off and that they've gotten the attention of some very choice demographics (eg you and I).

I don't like the fact that a Nicktoon is being cancelled overall. All of these cartoons are worth viewing and saving, no matter who the intended audience is. To this end, on April 2001, I had started a petition to get all of the Nicktoons episodes released on DVD, uncut and uncensored (especially Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko!). The web site for the petition is at: this link I have collected nearly 1500 signatures so far, and can always use more. Spongebob Squarepants is going to be on DVD soon, so it looks like Viacom is headed toward putting the Nicktoons on DVD in some capacity. Spread the word about this petition. We could even get Invader Zim on DVD!

For those of you who don't yet know, Disney has NO plans to release any more of Miyazaki's films, despite owning the US distribution rights to 11 of his films.

There's a petition here to get Disney to at least release some of these films on home video.

Disney's position is based on the poor performance of Princess Mononoke in the US. That release grossed just over $2 million in the US (it grossed over $150 million in Japan). However, it should be noted that Princess Mononoke was a limited release (I drove over 150 miles to see it - twice!), with little advertising before it came out.

There is hope however. A previous petition convinced Disney to add the Japanese language track and literal English translation to the DVD relese of Mononoke.

When I read these reports, the Microsoft stuff sickened me. I've started a petition online, in the hope that the negative publicity might spur Microsoft into retracting some of it's FUD.

(The petition, per se, is pretty useless. Nobody's going to listen to it. But, a slashdotted petition, right now when vocal opposition to Microsoft could actually have some impact on the MS/DOJ settlement, MIGHT create enough publicity to force Microsoft to back down.)

The bottom line is this. Not a single statement in the Microsoft evaluation was honest. Some had some technical points correct-ish, but in a way as to give a highly (and deliberately) misleading impression. Yet this is the information CEOs and technical managers will be relying on.

If it's not made illegal to decieve people out of their money, then it damn well aught to be at least made a very painful experience for the perp.

And with Apple's proposed adoption of file extensions as the standard filetype recogntion scheme, they'll be in the same boat as all the others anyway.

Any Mac OS X users interested in changing Apple's policies on file extensions should see the Mac OS X Metadata Petition. Yes, online petitions normally don't count for much, but John Siracusa has been very active in trying to get Apple to rethink this subject.

This is all good, but why does Jon Katz try to wrap the "technology" name around articles that don't have a "clear" reason to have technology attached to them?

I think this may be the flaw of Jon's that makes him so hated.

If he'd stop trying to tie technology into everything he writes (because he doesn't have a firm grip on the subject; the audience does, hence the hatred), he'd be a much better writer.
