Re:Programmer art
Look for a FOSS Friendly artist.
I do pixel art at work (because there is a decided lack of any other graphics program at my desk other than MS paint, which I have now become scarily proficient with. I have several "Blank" bitmaps that contain nothing but color palettes and white space to doodle in.) when I am on break, and have made some pretty interesting stuff.
If you want somebody better looking, try the magician.
Here's another "Bored at work." project.
If all you need are 2D sprite pixel art, then I could probably accommodate you. Props if you can provide a color palette, and describe where light sources are supposed to be.
If you need 3D objects, then as long as you only need non-animated 3D solids (like tables, chairs, guns, etc.) I could also probably accommodate you. (I have access to some crazy high-end CAD that I am batshit crazy good with. )
Here's a sample of some of that kind of stuff; A fountain I made to kill time. Never finished it though, because it wasn't important. (Had intended to put fish and naked people on it too. I am still working on a good method for creating good looking naked people in this industrial CAD software; it's not really made for artwork. So, for now, no people or organic forms in 3D, just hard solids.)
Here's a 3D mockup of my work environment I made for one of my boss's presentations. I have omitted showing the rest of the building (which was mocked up similarly.)
So, if you are making games for the Wii, and want an artist, all you really need to do is ask around. You'd be surprised what you come up with.
Even an Anonymous Coward like me can make small pixel art sprites.(BTW, in the off chance that anything I just posted provides inspiration (ha!), all these images are hereby released under creative commons.)

This was shocking to me
but the cost of routers and maintenance is nowhere near buying the bandwidth.
Here are some pics of some of Googles hardware. These are a few years old. The power interface is entirely foreign to me.
When I uploaded them to photobucket they were resized and I've since lost the originals, but, if you zoom in close enough you can see that the powersupply has a part number printed on it that includes the word 'GOOGLE', and, the ram also has chips that are individually labeled Google.
Does anyone care to explain to me how it is possible that doing such a thing is more cost effective than just purchasing stuff already on the market in bulk? I've been wondering it for years after seeing this.

Re:Stimulus is a dead issue.
The stimulus is a dead issue. GOP won the round.
How, by taking credit for stimulus money after having voted/opposed it, like Republican Governors and Congressmen and Senators? Like Bobby Jindal, who trashed stimulus spending in his response to Obama's SOTU speech...only to make a big show of handing out giant sized, Jindal-signed checks to programs funded with stimulus money?
Obama ought to be a good enough fighter to know that and move on.
One of the memes floated by the Obama fanboys is that he throws "rope a dopes" against Republicans. Nevermind that a rope a dope comes in two steps:
1. Let your opponent tire himself out attacking your defenses
2. Counter-attack and knock his ass outObama has never come close to Step 2. With anyone.

Re:Nesson's a Mystery to Me
I can't see how his behavior helps Mr. Tennenbaum.
I pondered this as well. Perhaps by hosting audio of the court case and distributing it, he was hoping the RIAA would complain and consider it copyrighted material--which they did. He then would hope the judge would rule in favor of Nesson and deny the RIAA the "motion to compel" or whatever they used to try to make him take it down--the judge did not, of course. But had the judge ruled in favor of Nesson regarding that motion, Nesson might have the judge in a very unusual position where the judge must now find Tenenbaum free of all charges on the exact same principle as the court audio that the RIAA said was copyrighted. It would be similar enough to get your foot in the door.
This tactic, as we now see, unfortunately failed. That's about as much as I could see in that move but I'm not a lawyer. He's just dancing around on the stage like a really old Ziggy Stardust.
Well, great, now you've put this in my head: Charles Nesson + Ziggy Stardust = Donald Pleasence in The Puma Man

But how about changing the stamps up a little bit so that they fall under fair use instead of further infringing?
That's a good idea. Behold, the non-infringing stamp!
I added my own artistic craftsmanship, with my careful, skilled pixelation of the original. And I defaced it a little. But although it is a transformative work, it does not fit the legal definition of a derivative work because I didn't get permission from anyone before blurring the original stamp out of recognition. Legally, it's merely a copy of the original with shit on it.
However, I will gladly give this guy a percentage of whatever profit I make by posting this here. -

Some Televised Speech (looks like a much older model)If you want to define "gifted orator", as someone who can give a good speech from memory, you'll probably need to cross the Atlantic and watch British politicians in parlament. By the British standard, the last gifted orator we've had in the oval office was William Jefferson Clinton, and ironically, he studied at Oxford...in Britain.

Re:I know it's old news, but...
Helicopters have been relegated to support roles (remember the canning of the Comanche project?) because a man with a rocket launcher can blow one up.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. Its true many helicopters function in a support role, but this has always been true. However, if you look at recent major engagements, helicopters have served on the front lines, often during initial insertions, engagements, or major offensives, whereby they absolutely were not serving support roles. For example, Apaches took out many SAM and radar sites before stealth bombers and fighters began their assaults. So to say, "helicopters have been relegated to support roles", is completely false. Apaches frequently fire the first rounds in new conflicts; and not as a support role.
And FYI, the Comanche program was canceled because it was way over budget, was not delivering its project goals, and it was believed the Apache platform could be retrofitted to address the lion share of the Comanche program objectives. Furthermore, with the fall of the Soviet Union, the need for the Comanche has been significantly questioned.
Furthermore, Apaches are relatively hard to shoot down, having taken direct hits from RPGs and flown home, and in general helicopters are hard targets when they are properly flown. The problem with most well known shoot downs are that idiot higher ups decided that helicopters should be flown low, slow, and forced to become highly visible targets such that they can be an ideal, easy target rather than the hard target they generally are. What you're describing is largely an idiocy problem which is pervasive within the military rather than an equipment issue. My understanding is some demotions have taken place and flight profiles have significantly changed.
The latest Apaches are capable of both radar and heat seeker missile counter measures. Extremely few are willing to engage any troops when Apaches are visible or even if they have been recently observed within an area. Areas where Apaches commonly patrol have some of the lowest IED rates in country. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Apaches have monikers such as "Demon Night Sharks" and everyone is scared shit-less of them. They can engage targets with their 30mm cannon well beyond the range at which they can be heard or observed. And its cannon is the least lethal weapon it carries. As scary as the Apache is, some of the technology it carries is basically 20 years old - even in the most common Longbow variant. As is, the Apache has few rivals on the battlefield and even tank crews, operating modern tanks with the latest armor, will openly tell you they're scared shit-less of them and their kind - even when they don't have missiles and/or rockets.
We have man-wearable armor today which can stop a
.50 caliber round... not a .50 AP round to be fair,I'm actually not aware of any such armors, but ignoring that, any body armor capable of stopping a NATO
.50 BMG round is still going to kill the wearer in a single shot. The blunt force trauma which would be transferred from these projectiles is huge. To prevent that transfer of force requires some type of rigid frame which does not come in contact with its wearer - which means you're no longer talking about body armor. Right now, about the most effective body armor available is Dragon Skin and a ball .50 BMG will cut through it like butter. Being hit by a .50 BMG round normally results in body parts explosively flying in various directions. It has a lots and lots of energy. And Dragon Skin is way more effective than what is actually issued to troops right now. In fact, many actually spend their own money to obtain it despite the fact the military has effectively banned the armor because of political back door money deals. Simply put, no body armor is even c -

Re:One problem with this reasoningOther than perhaps the time frame, I think this prediction (from the article) is entirely reasonable: "in thirty years, it is likely that virtually all the intellectual work that is done by trained human beings such as doctors, lawyers, scientists, or programmers, can be done by computers for pennies an hour. It is also likely that with AGI the cost of capable robots will drop, drastically decreasing the value of physical labor. Thus, AGI is likely to eliminate almost all of today's decently paying jobs."
Look at the jobs from 100 years ago and most of them are, in fact, gone! The percentage of farmers in the US has declined from 40% to just a few percent. This is due to precisely what the article is about: automation.
In the past, of course, most people have moved on to other jobs. On the other hand, the manufacturing jobs displaced in the last 40 years have largely not been replaced, and people that would have held them are now the working or unemployed poor. You might argue those people were displaced by offshoring and not technology, but consider this.

Re:Birth Control
well given that a woman who avoids all sex like a robot factors can still be outside her control ie: she can still get raped and become pregnant so even abstinence fails to achieve that.
Unless you think that people who take abstinence pledges and then get raped have *broken* their pledges.

Re:Bending strings
It's not really a guitar. It is a synthesizer that sounds like a guitar with distortion. I do play guitar. There is a joke among proficient guitar players where the term 'talent pedal' or 'talent booster pedal' is used in place of 'distortion pedal'. While a lot of good players do use distortion, it is used by a lot of not so good, or downright bad players to cover up their bad playing. When you hear that computer sound in singer's voices in the pop songs that are out there today (i.e. young girls and sometimes boys picked by studio execs because they look pretty and cool, not necessarily because of talent), it is usually the result of 'pitch correction'. This is technology that allows the engineer to move off key singing back into proper pitch within their Digital Audio Workstation. I like cool sounds too... maybe this is the democratization of music. Maybe this will allow people with no talent or no will or desire to devote the practice it needs to gain proficiency to be able to have their own music.
I have nothing against guitar synthesizers. In fact I like them a lot, and will likely look at this one if and when it hits the market. But if the guy wanted to really show it as a guitar, he would show us what it sounds like with a 'clean' guitar sound too. That way we can here how well it allows a person to create musical phrases, control the timing of when the notes are produced, control it in general, that sort of thing. I'm not saying it can't, but distortion covers that up.
And by the way, I've seen a number of heavy metal musicians (good ones) who are closet jazz freaks too.
:) I'm not saying jazz is better... I like it but listen to it as much as I do heavy metal... but my gauge of what talent is, is not limited by what genre a musician plays. -

Re:Speed Kills (play it safe - buy a Chevy)
How about you let us know when Opera and Chrome catch up to Midori? In my experience, Midori beats them all, for speed. YMMV, and I haven't even looked for benchmarks - I'm just going by personal experience. Oh yeah - Midori has been passing the Acid tests for quite a long time. It was the first, as far as I know.
http://s217.photobucket.com/albums/cc226/Runaway1956/?action=view¤t=Midori_Acid3.pngAnd, my primary browser is still Firefox. Customizations are worth the loss in speed, IMHO
My biggest complaint with Firefox is that it freezes occasionally. Just kinda fades out, and hangs for awhile. After several seconds, it brightens back up, and away I go. But, speed? My ISP limits my speed more than my browser does.

Re:Desktop/network support for women's health clin
Hello, McFly? That's PRECISELY the loaded word fallacy - to use a term that has multiple definitions such that the implications of the other definitions are taken.
It's the loaded word fallacy when it's intended to make the audience jump to an unjustified evaluative conclusion. Since no such conclusion has been applied further on in the argument, there is no application of the fallacy.
However, to set up a strawman by misinterpreting a particular word in a sense in which it was not used is an application of the equivocation fallacy.
Didja notice my use of quotations around the word "cheerleading?
Yes, quotation marks are normally used to delimit a quote. I assumed that you were using quotation marks in order to suggest my use of the term, but now you explain that you were using it to suggest something precisely unlike my use of the term.
Or maybe the part were I added "so called" before "cheerleading?"
Yes, "so-called" is a cheap rhetorical device used by third rate politicians as a warning that they're about to engage in sophistry. For example, a bad pro-lifer would write of the woman's "so-called 'freedoms'", even when it's obvious from the quote marks that the term is being quoted rather than chosen. The "so-called" is useless unjustified filler to attack the opposition's language.
Stop hitting yourself.
Shouldn't that be, "LOL I TROL you"?

Re:Great, still doesn't fix the Houston problem.
It's perfectly normal - albeit dangerous (one gust of wind and wheeeeee off-course smack-dab into a car).
Then again.. it's NL (and BE).. where we like to take little babies onto the front/rear of our bikes.. without helmets

Note narrow road.. without any bicycle lane... o0o0o danger! Not really.. it's so common in NL that motorists do tend to actually look out for cyclists and drive responsibly around them.Indeed, as GP notes.. it's often the cyclists in cities that tend to be more dangerous for cars, than the cars are for the cyclists.
Running red lights is pretty much the norm, one-way roads tend to be one-way for motorists only as well so don't be surprised if a cyclist comes head-on at you, signaling (by extending your arm) is something that went out of fashion in the late 80's - so be prepared to be cut off by a cyclist, etc.The only people worse are the pedestrians.. who will cross wherever and whenever they damn well please.. even if there's a pedestrian crossing, with or without traffic lights, only 10 yards over
:)
( Pedestrians are almost 'untouchable' by law in NL.. if a motorist hits a pedestrian, the motorist is gonna have to have some damn good evidence that there's nothing (s)he could've done to avoid the accident not to be the one 'in the wrong'. ) -

Re:Ridiculous law
Even naked pictures of an adult woman, standing in front of a completely white background, on a completely white floor, doing nothing, holding nothing, being covered in nothing is not necessarily going to arouse an adult heterosexual male.
Even if we insist that the people in question be between 18 and 36, and thus age-wise capable of reproduction. Even if we rule out immediate family.
I very very much doubt, that even a minimal majority of the random sampling of men chosen for the study, would find this woman (be warned) arousing. Granted, IF we choose our sample from cultures where that particular body shape might be considered attractive, then this woman (again, be warned) would not be seen as arousing. In fact, I think you'll have a hard time finding many men in western societies that find either arousing.
