Re:Sorry Server Down - Link To Article
PHP web hosting - http://www.phpwebhosting.com/. Once had a 2mb graphic file hosted there that got linked to from the World of Warcraft main page. By the time all was said and done our logs showed multiple terabytes of data transfer over the course of a few days and their servers never flinched.

Re:Considering all sides of the issue...
My take is this, Net Neutrality sounds great on the surface, but here's why I don't like it; if you are a content producer you should pay for the bandwidth that is allocated for your content
Excuse me, but as a content producer myself, I ALREADY pay for the bandwidth of my content. At the moment, it costs about $10/month, but in the event that my weblog becomes much more popular than it is now, I'm going to have to start shelling out much more money.
Google already pays millions of dollars a month for its bandwidth. Kos himself pays thousands a month to maintain dailkos.com. The bandwidth is already paid for. The telcos shouldn't be charging "protection money" from web site producers who are already paying big money for their bandwidth. -
Re:Downloading isn't evil at all.
Illegal downloading might keep Celine Dion from getting another gold-plated Cadillac, but for most artists it's not making much of a difference. See downhillbattle.org's breakdown of who really gets paid when you buy a CD:

If you want to support artists, go to their shows and buy stuff directly from them. -
Re:Does it work?
Very strange! Maybe only some versions are vulnerable? According to secunia, Firefox 1.x is vulnerable (http://secunia.com/advisories/15601/). Maybe it's OS? I'm running on Windows XP SP 2. Maybe it's a FF setting? I can't recall having modified the default settings.

phpwebhostting.com has been good to me.
http://phpwebhosting.com/. They're quite reliable - i've had to ask for support only once or twice and they were pretty responsive. They don't do phone support though. For $9.95 per month per domain, I'm pretty happy.

Re:Bloatedly slow?
Ever hear of the uncanny valley? There's something like that going on with Office for Mac. At a glance, it appears to look and behave just like a Mac program should, but somehow... well, it's hard to point to anything specific, but there's something a little off. Popup menus are drawn with custom routines instead of Cocoa. The inline spellchecker doesn't antialias the underline squiggle properly. And so on and so forth. It just makes one queasy.
I'd welcome a productivity suite from Apple. -

Do it yourselfAnyone can get access to a POP3/SMTP provider for almost no cost, with pretty free limits. Why is webmail so popular?
For $9.95 a month, you can use PHP Webhosting
They are reliable, fast, and they offer the most amazing webhosting plans as part of the package.
Just try it, what can it hurt. -
Re:Cold Fusion MX?I started coding apps for the web in CF back around v4, when I was still a student. I've been primarily developing in PHP (with Perl, ASP, and C) for a few years now, and rarely touch CF code (I have two fairly inactive clients that have CF-based apps that I support).
I prefer PHP because it's C-like (which was used in most of my college coursework), and because it's Free.
CF is interesting, as the syntax and structure make you think in a non-c-like sort of fashion. I'm too drunk to think of an example, but I developed some very strange patterns in CF, which was fun. Not nearly as different as functional programming in Lisp, mind you, but "different"
In the end, I'd start playing with PHP. There are several good reasons:
It's Free.
It's free (as in beer). You can get pretty cheap hosting
There are a ton of really useful libraries to play with.
You can (half-assedly) write handy scripts with it, even though everybody uses Perl for that. (PHP scripts can be executed from the command line).
It resembles other languages, which means that when you decide to learn Perl or C or Java, the syntax won't be so foreign.
Some other reasons I can't remember, I just finished off a bottle of wine (damned puritanical co-workers!) -

Re:eryxma.com
I've been through the Eryxma route, too. I got the impression that they were kinda a 1- or 2-man shop, and there were some rumors on webhosting boards about them being less than legit. Nothing substantiated, but it was enough to make me shy away from them.
I'm using phpwebhosting.com now, and couldn't be happier. They're a great solution if you can't afford Rachshack or whatever. The site in my sig is hosted with them, actually. Nice and fast, great support, geek-friendly, the works :) -
Re:Java is cool but . . .
PHP Web Hosting is only $10 a month.
You get unlimited bandwidth, unlimited e-mail accounts, e-mail forwarding, mailing lists, C compiler access, mySQL, PHP, Telnet/SSH, cron jobs, SSL, and just about any other thing you can ask for that would be availible on a Linux server.
I'm not affiliated with phpwebhosting.com, but I am very satisfied with their services.

phpwebhosting.com
phpwebhosting.com is easily the cheapest full service bandwidth I've found. For $12/month, they give you everything you could want - shell access, *unlimited* bandwidth, mySQL, perl, python, php, sweet log analysis, email, mailing lists, etc. Since it's only one (small) bill a month, and you talk directly to their tech people for support, I'd say it's pretty autonomous... short of having you own box on the net, of course.
Websurfing done right! StumbleUpon -
check out phpwebhosting.comThough I can't personally recommend them, people have recommended them to me. phpwebhosting.com
They have a pretty snazzy list of features including:
SSI,
PHP4,
Perl,
Python, .htaccess configuration,
cgi-bin,
password protected directories,
crontab,
ssh access (which is a must if you ask me)There price seems resonable and they don't really have a size limit. They boast burstable bandwidth (whatever that means). Check them out.

Everybody has something to hide.....
everytime some scumbag has done something wrong and they are hauled into court for it, unless it is some show trial (John Walker, OJ.. etc..) People get barred when there are some real juicy bits.
Take for example, the barring of the media during the Iran/Contra hearings when the talks turned to drug issues, in the name of national security.
My website has two very curious events..STORIES that were released in the mainstream Media right after the SOTU adresss.
Both Cheny and Bush have told Dachle and the rest of the Senate not to head any (planned) investigation into the events of 9/11.
Interesting. More juicy bits. The same thing with Enron, the whitehouse just flat out says: we will not give you what you are asking for, even if you use the law to try and obtain it.
It scares me that this kind of behavior is being used more and more in this country, and that it is seen as expected "normal" behavior.

Re:Why use PHP?PHPWebHosting - I found it as a recommendation on a slashdot thread a couple of months ago.
From their web site...
125 Megs of Diskspace + more for free as needed
Un-metered Transfer - note: no hosting of porn, file archives, warez, etc. allowed
SSH Access 24 hours a day (ssh is a secure replacement for telnet)
FTP Access 24 hours a day
It's finally here! Un-metered pop3 mailboxes!
unlimited name@yourdomain.com email aliases
unlimited email forwards
unlimited mailing lists
1 MySQL Database
Additional MySQL databases as needed(no extra charge)
Use of php4 (as an apache module and as a cgi)
Your own CGI-BIN directory and ability to run your own scripts
Use of Perl programming language, python, c, c++
Use of all standard Unix utilities
Reasonable use of crontab allowed - no jobs that run every minute, etc.
Background processes (which run continually), servers, bots, etc. are not allowed
Access to web-based control panel
Use of SSL(with our certificate or yours)
I don't have any affiliation with them except as a happy customer.

Your-Site (Low-Cost, But Good)
After an extensive search in Usenet and on the Web for a low-cost but still good site hosting service, I settled upon Your-Site. It's a "build your own plan" service at which you can accept a pretty decent set of services for $60 per year prepaid or $7 per month non-prepaid (50M disk space with a charge of $0.10 per month for each extra megabyte, 6G transfer exclusive of FTP and email with a charge of $3 per extra gigabyte in any month you exceed the limit, 25 POP3 accounts with a charge of $0.50 per extra POP3 account, PHP/Perl/C/Python CGI-BIN functionality).
I've been a tad busy and haven't been paying close attention per se to the three sites I'm building there as time permits, but haven't noticed especial problems. People who made comments about Your-Site in Usenet (that I saw) seemed happy with the service when I did the heavy research a couple of months ago, and I didn't see any negative comments about Your-Site (which is mildly significant all by itself, probably). The folks at Your-Site have been responsive to my concerns as well, and I have no worries about them.
To judge from an absurd amount of looking into alternatives, I'd hazard a firm guess that Your-Site is offering about the best deal you'll get from a low-cost site hosting service without running into problems from bottom-feeders out to make a buck without bothering to actually deliver on their promises, or problems with all sorts of limits on what you can do. I haven't tried the site hosting service mentioned by another poster here, "PHP Web Hosting", but that was another place on my very short list of top candidates at the end just before making a final decision. They do charge more at $9.95 per month, but more features are included up-front in the basket, and it may be a better deal for your needs, depending on what exactly you wish to do. This would be my next choice after Your-Site, and very probably my first choice if I needed "unlimited" disk space or POP3 accounts.
YMMV, naturally.

You could try...PHPWebhosting offers "unlimited" disk & bandwidth for $9.95 a month, and you can do pretty much what you want with your domain name. But they do have a proviso that "unlimited" implies "within reason" - so you'll want to contact them for specifics before you take my word on this. I use them for my own site, and have been very happy with service so far.
Serve/Datarealm might also be able to help - they have a few plans, one of which might suit you. I forget their pricing structure, but the name just popped into my head as a possibility... I have no experience with them personally.
Best of luck.

NSI are the devils.
I am so happy to see this
I hope to see a lot more -- I'm generally against a lot of lawsuits but I really have no choice but to feel utter dispise towards that company.
My recent dealings with them have been absolutely horrendous, here is a page about it.
Not only have I had horrible experience with their customer service department, but also they're utilities for updating and registering are so far behind the rest of the competitors I can't imagine why anyone still does business with them.
The biggest thing I dont understand about them, is that since they lost their monopoly they now only account for 40% instead of 100%? A 60% loss in market share and they still seemingly refuse to restructure their obviously defunct customer service department and registration tools?
This, above all, deserves to be a Fucked Company life member.
My worst experience with them, was getting my contact record changed when the email address expired very suddenly. After explaining to them the situation and getting a canned response back then responding to that, then getting another canned response back I finally figured out what to do. You have to FAX them something. Wow, I thought we were living in a digital age, hell no. So I faxed it, nope - they lost it twice! Finally, I get my contact record changed (after 2.5 months of arguing with them) and when I tried to update my domain (nerdfar.org) they are refusing on the grounds that I have not properly proved my identity - yet my contact record is updated.
If there is a law against this I'd love to nail em for it -- not for any money, I just want my domain to be functional again.
Well, this is one hell of a rant.
Morale of the story, screw NSI and use register.com or another one of the registrars because NSI's head is so far up it's ass it's making the slashdot trolls envious. -
Re:Editing
not the editors
WTF is an editors job then?
Hm, editor; one who edits. Hence, they should edit whatever post is going to be posted. Of course, anyone who confuses Adobe with a little house of mud probably isn't too apt at clicking either. It is getting horrendous. Slashdot tries to push itself as a journalism site, yet all they really do is publish other peoples gibberish with links.
Bring Slashdot back to what made it popular, a link site with a message board attached to it. It was a portal, and that was what it was good at. It should not be a news site. It should not be for journalism. The only time I admired the journalism on slashdot was when Jon Katz posted a feature. While I seldom agree with Jon Katz anti-witchhunt and extremist point of view -- it was/is journalism.
The "journalistic" content of slashdot now consists of interviews with their friends and collegues, and occasionally someone with higher visibility that has input from the message board instead of Slashdot "journalists".
I'm finding myself looking at other sites like linuxtoday.com for real nerd-news. They just link, and that's what Slashdot did to make it popular.
I suppose I can't blame them, the old philosphy of do it till your popular then do what you want seems in effect. Unfortunately a lot of the people who made slashdot what it is today are getting fed up with the constant idiocy spewing forth from the posters.
The only person that I think doesn't make routine mistakes and blanket idiotic statements is CmdrTaco because it seems he still holds the ideal of slashdot there, post links with summary and if you have something to add, add it -- otherwise just let the link be.

Re:Never had a problem in the Boston area
My interaction with speakeasy has been horrendous!
After a long painstaking phone call, explaining how I needed a subnet, just a small network of 24 or 32 IP's and I wanted them to route the line they assured me it would be simple and easy.
Well, I get the order confirmation almost 2 weeks later [keep in mind, this is a speakeasy internal thing, hasn't gone to Covad yet] telling me that they processed my order and it's ok on their end and I have been approved for a 384KBps line with 1 IP.
Hmm..
I call them and tell them they have my order wrong, to which they say, "We have nothing on record for this". Obviously.
So I corrected my order, they said, Ok, no problem. ... wait another 2 weeks ...
Get an email back, with my new order (this time correct) but a price tag of over $300!!
I can get a leased T1 for $500/month?? WTF??
I politely told them I would no longer need their service, and if they would terminate any contact with me.
That was a little over 2 months ago, I still don't have DSL because it turns out the CO is full for my district, and I still receive speakeasy spam.
Damn them.
Damn all of them

Could be good, could be bad.
Aside from stupid enforcement, this could actually be a really good thing
A while back at a certain gov't job, we had an attacker break in. We did trace him, found out for the most part who he was and everything.
He was from a EU country, and we couldn't do *anything* about it. It was really frustrating, because what he did went far beyond just the curiosity approach that I advocate to a point.
His intent was damage, and instead of someone being punished for their crime myself and another coworker had to stay late for days digging through logs of other machines to find out how deep the damage went. That's not fair.
However this could be the worst thing that we could come up against. Depending upon how far they want to take the 'device used for hacking'.
I mean.. hell, look back to the young isreali Edin Tenebaum, aka Analyzer. That guy was funny, and aided those kids (by aiding more or less told them information they needed) to break into the pentagon.
Edin in my opinion is completely innocent. Telling someone how to shoot a gun doesn't make them an accessory to murder.

Re:Questions on making your own stats
What we do is having each server here (here being where I work not nerdfarm which I lose money to operate*G*) completely ignore for the most part what's going on.
We've hacked out a packet sniffer that runs on the network picking up good data (ie, where is the hit coming from) and then between that and our dns load balancing software we get a really good monitoring package to find out exactly how busy our servers are. And BTW, our servers serve approximately 2000-6000 hits a second. yes, a second. Yeah.. it is a lot. And it all runs apache.

Re:We knew the black hole was there..
Hmm.. black holes are theory.
If all science is waiting to be disproven, then it will never advance.
For instance, drive a car for exactly one hour at 60 miles per hour without acceleration (or deceleration). Prove you went 60 miles in that hour.
That's a theory too, sometimes you just have to say this is the way it is and accept it.
Black holes are real
Black holes are more or less the foundation for the universe (the order and such)
If you don't believe me, go ask one. Make sure you get real close so it can hear you. And that event horizon thing, psh.. just a figment of an imagination.
This isn't mean to be a flame at all, my intention is to provide you with a different perspective.

Re:Black Holes
What you are talking about is the Big Bang/Big Crunch theories
If the universe expands like a rubber band type thing, to a point then slowly starts contracting again
or if it will expand infinitely.
It's all relational to the amount of matter and graviational pull to the expansion and what not, unfortunately we don't have enough knowledge of dark matter to definitely say whether we're gonna get crunched or stretched.

Frank Miller, complete batman.
For all Frank Miller fans (you seem to be one)
Get the Frank Miller leatherbound Batman book. It is probably 250 pages or more, of full page drawing with little one page poems and prose.
The most powerful tale of the dark knight I have ever seen.
Here's an entry for what I'm talking about:
Miller, Frank. The Complete Frank Miller Batman. 1st ed. Stamford: Longmeadow Press, 1989.
After reading this book, I'm sure that the effects and cinemtography of Pi will compliment and complete any movie bound version of a Frank Miller story. Of course .. Robin was.. nevermind, wont spoil it for you if you want to read it :).
