Nicotine (the compound in tobbacco) has a similar sounding name because the basic chemical structure is similar, although for all practical and functional purpouses they are unrelated. (Google gives http://www.galaxygoo.org/nicotine/what_is_nicotine .html as a site with the structure of nicotine.)

Complete or stabilize any projects you're working on at least a month early. Delivery dates are approximate.

Plan on putting any video games or other compulsive hobbies in storage for about a year.

Don't buy anything except diapers, a car seat, a sealed trashcan, and a half-dozen waterproof changing pads. Buy everything else as you need it.

Contrary to what others have said, the multifunction car seats are a pain. They don't fit infants well and they're not portable. You want something you can take out of your car while your kid's asleep. The infant seats are pretty cheap, anyway.

Support nursing. It's better nutritionally, you don't have to do any prep, and it's emotionally good for the kid.

If one of you can stay home, do it. If not, prepare for battle. My wife and I both tried to work from home when our first was born, and we fought constantly over whose time is a priority. The kid is a full time job, one that you shouldn't trust to anyone else because nobody will do a better job than you will.

If you think you can't afford to stay home, double check your priorities. My brother's been saying he can't afford it, but when I suggested he stop maxing out his 401k for a year or two, he flipped. Same with deferring his wife's student loans. Most people can afford it but aren't willing to make any sacrifices. Kids are actually pretty cheap for the first few years if you avoid daycare.

Ignore all the baby books on the market. I've gone through 3 that were considered the best, and my wife did half a dozen. They're all heavily politically motivated (your infant needs independence -- daycare -- is a common theme in the newer ones) or smeared with psychoanalitical garbage. The mothering magazines are lousy, too.

By all means do not bake the birthday cake in the What to Expect in the First Year book! I know several people who tried it, including myself, and there's no way to make anything except a brick. It makes fruitcake look fluffy. It is a curse on our generation that will spoil far too many first birthdays.

The second time around, my wife and I dumped the crib and got a second bed for my wife and new daughter. My wife can keep my daughter asleep most days until about 8, and when she was first born, they stayed in bed most of the day sleeping. They were considerably happier, and needless to say, I sleep well. Co-sleeping, as the pros call it, should only be a problem if you're massively overweight or drink heavily. Keep the baby on its back and away from blankets. Even if you don't set out to sleep with your infant, you'll end up doing it anyway.

Prepare to be amazed at how child-unfriendly US society is.

Monday night George W. Bush, our legally if not ethically elected leader stepped up in front of the world and told us that Iraq had "ties" to Al Qaeda (and thus WTC responsibility) and that he was a danger to the world, though nothing has ever been produced to prove this (But it's okay, there are some things the government doesn't need to explain fully, they need their secrets right?). Saddam was a danger to Kurds, Israelis, Iranians and Kuwiatis because our government helped gain him that power (the only thing about the Iraq-Contra affair that this country remembers is that a brave man in uniform with an honest face was grilled in front of a big mean Congressional panel).

Afghanistan? An exit strategy was thought up as soon as we went in, and Iraq was it. This is public record. (see current Mother Jones issue). Also see the archived streaming video debate[scroll down] on the Christopher Hitchens Web against Mark Danner.

Everyone involved in Bush's world going back decades has been involved in Oil. Everyone in his government holding any kind of power is involved in Oil. We now have bases spread from Kuwait to deep ex-Soviet Territory in Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

Putting up a bumper sticker or flag is our way of getting involved. Cafeteria Managers are renaming French fries. Major newspapers editorialize that the French are pissing on the graves of D-day soldiers. Most Americans don't approve a pre-emptive war, but since Bush's Monday speech his ratings are rocketing. Look, He's doing something. We're like predators only interesting in moving things, in action, overshadowing the consequences.

This is a stupid country.

In response to the pithy "then why don't you just leave" argument, I say:

Because it is the best going, and there's the logistics involved in repatriating. Also, I live on many different levels, in a community, a town, a state, a geography and ecosystem, in cyberspace. The notion of belonging to a nation is but one of many, but hardly my overarching modifier. Is America the best on its way down? Does being the freest nation on earth require colonial domination over the rest of the planet? If another country without the addiction to war and oil can offer the freedom

Our population is increasing, there is more movement among different groups, fewer stressors (medical advances mean it's easier to survive), etc.

I don't think policies like this are meant to actually block 100% of the targeted sites, but simply to make them as unaccessible as possible. If such a targeted site is found to not be blocked I'm sure all it takes is reporting it to the ISP and it will be added to the block list.

What I'm curious is if something like this will start going to other levels like P2P and newsgroups, where ISPs have to block any file or newsgroup that matches in a list of keyword regexp that denote child porn, I know RCN, my ISP, already does it for newsgroups.

So huge, in fact, that I thought the TNG episode was actually pretty lame for the way it handled the sphere. I mean, given that the thing's usable surface area was 100,000 times the surface of all the planets in the Federation combined (assuming 3190 Federation worlds to round the numbers out), you could easilly devote a season or a serries to the concept (once you worked out that nasty little solar flare issue, of course). Are you listening, Rick Berman?

While you're right about the fact that each cell only female cells only have one active X chromosome, you are incorrect about the nature of the clone.

Each cell has the complete set of DNA. In theory there's nothing stopping the new cat from from having the exact same pattern as the old cat. However, since the pattern has to do with the positioning of the cells and the inactivated X chromosome is random, the probability is very small.

Which is true in that DNA repair exists and p53 is involved in it (although its more involved in getting cells to commit suicide if there feeling a bit precancerous), but it won't stop genes mutating as all it does is checks/corrects DNA base pairing sometimes correcting it the wrong way creating a new mutation

If we only see ~5% of the Universe (and probably only understand about 0.00000001% of that), could it be that we really cannot see most of what is right in front of us?

Once we achieve the technology, that's my plan -- to "save" as much of the energy that's pouring out into space, so we can make the universe last longer. I'm sure advanced civilizations have similar thoughts.

Aside from increasing awareness of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), and increasing intervention efforts, the big questions that should elicit the most worry are:

1.) whether intervention, by diminishing use of antibiotics will be _effective_?

2.) And what is the timescale in which we'll see our intervention efforts start to work?

Regarding 2., I mean to ask, how long will it take before the ARB begin to go away and be replaced by normal bacteria? If it's quick, then we should not be so worried. And that would be a silver lining for those who are thinking of tackling this problem. If it takes a very long time, then we should worry more.

And even more importantly, for the long-term planning people

3.) Once ARB have been reduced in bacterial populations, how easy is it for bacteria to acquire resistance again?

For answering 3., unfortunately, it's probably _not_ the same as bacteria acquiring resistance for the first time. From the molecular biology of antibiotics and bacteria, we know some antibiotic resistance genes are placed onto plasmids. Plasmids are separate from the bacteria. They are small, modular pieces of DNA that can encode resistance. Once you develop resistance, you can keep or pass these plasmids around until needed. Even if resistant bacteria die, the plasmids may still remain in existence. Thus the molecular biology of bacteria tells us we should consider these things to fully understand our intervention efforts.

We are uncertain, I believe, of the evolutionary time scales of all these events. (except for the one telling us how long it takes for antibiotic resistance to develop!)

My research indicates that the U.S. government support for violence and Microsoft's inability to treat its customers well are related. They are both are part of a social breakdown caused by a kind of low-level mental disturbance in which people become progressively insensitive to themselves and others. It has to be that they just went with what is familiar. Just because something evolved, or is in the process of evolution, doesn't mean that it's the best.

I greatly appreciate that you're questioning whether the humans anatomy is imperfect. There are a lot of examples of where evolution has helped but, by following the path of evolution, cannot be perfected.

The best example I can think of is the human eye. You think we see pretty well, huh? If you look at the retinal cell layering as seen here you can plainly see that light sensing cells are slightly obscured by the neural cells. Those neurons (labeled ganglion cells in the image) have to eventually lead out of the eyeball, which is the reason we have a blind spot in each eye. We would see images much better if the neural cells were BEHIND the light sensing cells, but this can NEVER occur by simply evolving from what we already possess. It would take a revolution in eye development for that to happen. All mammals have this road block (I'm not sure about the nautilus and other odd creatures with non-lens eyesight). The site linked above also lists other reasons why we don't have full potential of our eyesight (sharper images), but AFAIK those have the potential of being perfected through evolution.

How can I tell the actual bandwidth I am receiving?

The best way to do this is to download something large from the Internet, either via FTP or your browser. While you're downloading the file or program, your client (your FTP application or browser) should tell you the rate at which that file is downloading. Beware though. Some applications will report your throughput in terms of Kbps (Kilobytes per second), while others will report your throughput in terms of kbps (kilobits per second; note the lower case k).

I'm pretty sure that b stood for bits and B stood for bytes (and to avoid misconception, it's better to use bit (kbit, Mbit..) for bits.) Isn't it quite embarrassing for broadband company to mix things like this, or do they even care?

I saw the 3 Mb and thought I immediately had to check out their site. But, when I got to the page supposedly would give more info on the cable service in CA, they had me fill out a form, yet CA wasn't even an option for state! What gives? Especially since this 3 Mb cable is only supposed to debut in LA and SF...

By adulthood, Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements is firmly planted in a typical mind either as a tool for study or proof of mystical forces at work in nature. There are alternative structures: some clever and others using alternate media, extensions to the table providing nuclear structure, fermi surfaces, and line spectra.

Still others are extraordinarily cross-thematic, merging chemistry with comic books, poetry or haiku. But only the grouping-nature of the columns is retained in rejected elements, condiments and beer. Eventually the elements and the periodic qualities have been lost entirely, reducing the periodic table to a design template for topical lists of funk and rock music, comedy and TV shows, famous mathematicians and presidents, even SGI products. Soon a complete breakdown of the scientific aspect yields no similarity to the original, becoming a glorified table, a marketing tool, or hype itself. There is mounting evidence of a conspiracy.

The big question is, will Microsoft respond in the same way and back down?

However, yes, I did miss some of the episode because my cable company RCN has such crappy service that my cable box went offline for 5 minutes during the "space station" scene.

Lots of places have been giving you the hardware free... or leasing it free with a free setup. I got RCN Cable Modem service a year ago. It was free setup, free leased modem, $40 a month, no contract, when I signed up. Granted there were a couple months that were hell as they grew their network, but things seem to be running smoothly now. I'm guessing that they've probably set the cable modem up so that it will only work with their network.

By the way, I very much agree with the other posts here that prefer leased hardware over owned hardware. I'm on my 3rd cable modem (the Hybrid modems are kinda flakey). Each time I've had major problems, it was traced to a flakey modem. Swapouts aren't too painful. Buying a new modem is.

Kinda Offtopic Note: Oh yeah... and if you're using a cable modem, make sure all your cable lines are clean (no staples or nails through em) and that all your splitters give less of a signal loss to the cable modem side of the wire. The better the signal, the better your performance.

RCN is doing just this. They are laying fiber out to people's houses... I think the only copper part is between you and the box, and a single box only servers some 100 homes. I believe that each box gets 12 pairs of fiber.

They are going to provide a single solution for everything - TV, phones, internet, etc. It is expected to be very very fast.

I know this because they bought the company I was working for last summer (an ISP here in the SF Bay Area) and this is what they told us. But don't worry, they said it's fine to tell the world. :b

IIRC, this service is going to be availible here (in the bay area) as well as in the Boston area.

What bothers me is this "freedom on the internet" genre of posts which makes it sound like us techies are being "oppressed" by big corporations. How is it that big corporations can control the 'net?

Have you read your ISP's Terms of Service contract? Check out this passage from RCN.com's Service Contract:

6. Subject to the provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and any other applicable laws and regulations, RCN reserves the right to remove or block access to, either permanently or temporarily, any files which RCN suspects or which a third party alleges are associated with a violation of the law, this Agreement or RCN's Online Policies or with the account responsible for such violation. This includes but is not limited to blocking access to Usenet news articles. [emphasis mine]

Note: Proof is not necessary; suspicion is all that's required to get your account pulled. If you've just bought a year's worth of DSL service, you could be out a few thousand dollars.

You are conflating concrete property (my bank account) with sales projections ("We might have sold this many DVDs if it hadn't been for those Commie-pinko pirates!"). Analogy fails.

Investors have placed lots of money in the development of DVD technology - and stand to lose a lot in the face of DeCSS.

Forgive me, but what utter nonsense. DeCSS is absolutely no threat to the sales of DVD players or discs. Even if you had a T3 into your home (at $5K/month), unsanctioned copying of DVD movies over the Internet is not going to happen; do the bandwidth math to see why. "Piracy" is simply not a problem.

The appeal of DVD to the movie makers is that it prevents unauthorized copying.

Inaccurate. The appeal of DVDs to movie studios is that:

• The image quality is much higher, making their product look better and more appealing,
• Their manufacturing costs are a mere fraction of videocassettes, vastly increasing their profit margins.

  To destroy someone else's business investment for the sake of "freedom" is unethical, to say the least.

  At the risk of completely torpedoing my credibility here, would your theorem apply to slavery as well? There were a lot of businesses in the American South 200 years ago that relied on slavery. Those businesses were killed (or, as it finally turned out, completely restructured) in the name of "freedom".

  Real people like you and me invest in technology. We risk our hard earned money. And when something like DeCSS comes along, it threatens to nullify the investment that real people have made in technology, and make people more reluctant to accept new technology.

  150 years ago, real people spent a lot of money digging holes in the ground looking for gold. None of them labored under the delusion that, just because they had invested a considerable sum into a hole, they were entitled to find gold at the bottom of it.

  If you walk into the Digital Universe and honestly think you can prevent copying, then you've failed your fiduciary duty to yourself and your shareholders by not doing your homework.

  Digital bits are -- and forever shall be -- easily copied at zero cost. Period. It is possible to do healthy business within this reality (NASDAQ:RHAT). Denying the reality only makes you look foolish and sets you up for one heck of an ulcer.

SMP support on FreeBSD/i386 is standard now, but it is not as good as one might want it. In particular, there is no scheduling of a MT process to multiple CPUs. Apart from that, SMP support works as expected. -Hans
