Re:RPM downloading bug
RealNetworks' first public use of the
.rpm file extension is practically simultaneous with Red Hat use: (see RealAudio 2.0 release and Red Hat 2.0 release).
The need for using .rpm with modern browsers is way less than it was. However, there's enough legacy content out there that we can't just stop using it.
However, we're in the process of working on the Helix Player installer right now, so if you've got some ideas for how the two can peacefully co-exist, we'd love to hear it.

GNOME Armageddonthis is the sixth text revision done on 04-11-2002.
dear reader the gnome armageddon has started,
first of all i want to clarify that this text was meant to be a source of information otherwise i wouldn't have spent so much time into writing it. belive me it took me a couple of days writing this text in a foreign language. even if you don't care at all for gnome, you may find some interesting information within this text that you like to read. please try to understand my points even if it's hard sometimes, otherwise you wake up one day and feel the need to switch to a different operating system.
on the following lines i'm trying to give you a little insight of the gnome community. the things that are going on in the back, the information that could be worth talking and thinking about.
many of us like the gnome desktop and some of us were following it since the beginning. gnome is a promising project because it's mostly written in C, easy to use, configurable and therefore fits perfectly into the philosophy of u*nix. only to name some of its advantages.
unfortunately these advantages changed with the recently new released version of gnome. the core development team somehow got the idea of targeting gnome to a complete different direction of users. the so called corporate desktop user. in other words they're targeting people that aren't familiar or experienced with desktop environments. usually business oriented people who are willing to pay money for getting gnome on their computers.
having this new target in mind, the core development team mostly under contract by companies like redhat, ximian and sun decided to simplify the desktop as much as even possible by removing all its flexibility in favor of an easy clean simple interface to not confuse their new possible customers. so far the idea of a clean easy to use desktop is honourable.
some of the new ideas, features and implementations such as gconf, an evil windows registry like system, new ordering of buttons and dialogs, the removal of 90%-95% of all visible preferences from the control center and applications, the new direction that gnome leads and the attitude of the core development team made a lot of users really unhappy. these are only a couple of examples and the list can easily be expanded but for now this is enough. now let me try to get deeper into these aspects.
you may imagine that users got really frustrated because their beloved gnome desktop matured into something they didn't want. during the time, the frustration of a not less amount of people increased. more, more and more emails arrived on the gnome mailinglists where users tried to explain their concerns, frustrations and the leading target of GNOME.
but the core development team of gnome don't give a damn about what their users are thinking or wanting and most of the time they come up with their standard purl. the reply they give is mostly the same. users should either go and 'file a bug' at bugzilla or the user mails are being turned so far that at the end they sound like being trolls or the user feedback is simply not wanted. whatever happens the answers aren't really satisfying for the user. even constructive feedback isn't appreciated.
if you gonna think about this for a minute then things gonna harden that they are directing into the commercial area. the core development team actually don't care fo

Libraries would be more popular if they had...
How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Re:Hurray for the Debian Security Team!
This problem was found in September
But the latest Red Hat kernel security advisory is dated july 21st. Does that mean Red Hat Linux is still vulnurable? Or was Red Hat Linux never vulnurable? -
Re:Will redhat provide an rpm???
Just wondering if they will still support us lowly 7.3 and 8.0 users anymore with a fix for this.
Red Hat is supporting these releases until the end of this year, so I'd expect them to.

Redhat? No, asshat.I can't believe RedHat these guys working for it.
Here's one quote:
According to Harish Pillay, chief technology architect for Red Hat Asia, the scalability of threading has increased from 1,200 to 32,000 threads with NPTL. This translates to significant performance boosts when running multithreading applications such as Java software and databases, he said. More importantly, the enhancement puts RHEL 3.0 in better stead against rival OS Unix, which has long been equipped with more advanced-threading capabilities.Whaaat? This guy is the CTO of RH Asia, and doesn't even know WHAT his chief product is? If RedHat Linux is not a variant of Unix, then why is RedHat offering courses on Unix ?
And here's a quote from a RedHat document, titled " History of Unix, Linux, and Open Source / Free Software":
2.1.5. Comparing Linux and Unix
This book uses the term ``Unix-like'' to describe systems intentionally like Unix. In particular, the term ``Unix-like'' includes all major Unix variants and Linux distributions. Note that many people simply use the term ``Unix'' to describe these systems instead.I can't believe this guy is so high up in RH hierarchy. Doesn't look good for RedHat.

GNAA Announce Backdoor Regulation by FCCGNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor GNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor
By Tim Copperfield
Raleigh, NC - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was responsible for planting the "backdoor" inside the popular opensores operating system, Lunix (Stocks, Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative goat-see revealed that the mistery hacker who penetrated high-security defenses of the Lunix "source code" repository and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the kernel was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," goat-see began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996. Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website, slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right into the Lunix kernel, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA backdoor came right between the consideration of Novell to buy out the entire Lunix Kernel programming team, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers working for Novell with the gay niggers developing Lunix kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting our next plans to add "backdoors" into the next favorite operating system, BeOS.

Re:A bit more than the average MS bias
Bugs in code are a reality for every computer industry. Plus who is to say that port80 are the ones who wrote the code and that it was not contracted out to a different company? Should I not take Microsoft seriously as a company because they forgot to renew their DNS entry for hotmail? How about not taking Redhat seriously for poor website programming?
Should I not take you seriously for misspelling "skepticism" and "professionism"? Errors like this are a part of life, no company or person is perfect. -
Re:The money issue
OK, since you seem to be having trouble with math, I'll make it simple:
RHL 9: Released March 31, 2003
RHL 9: EOL April 30, 2004
How is supporting it for 13 months "cutting 9 off early" when they stated before it was released it would get a minimum of 12 months of support?
If your RHN subscription runs beyond April 30th, you get a copy of RHEL WS w/RHN until the end of your subscription. But since you have a paid RHN account you've already read the FAQ that tells you that, right? -

Re:What about wanting to pay for a consumerI'm a perfect example. I have 10+ servers, I don't need hand holding, I have never called Redhat support, but I certainly do appreciate security updates. Am I going to pay $1000 per machine for that? No way!! What's my option, Redhat?
Apart from RHEL AS/ES/WS (which can be a little pricey), there is also Red Hat Professional Workstation. It's based on RHEL3, and contrary to what the name suggests, it includes most server daemons.
-
Re:multiple RHEL installations
It was all about trademarks. It is also the same reason we have 'Fedora' instead of 'Red Hat Free Beer'.
-
multiple RHEL installationsIt's totally permissible to run their Enterprise products on as many machines as you like without any RHN subscription or support contract. Just buy one copy, and install it everywhere.
I hate to be negative, but I do not actually think that this is legal.
Look carefully at the RHEL EULA. Here are some quotes, emphasis added:
The term "Installed Systems" means the number of Systems on which Customer installs the Software. The term "System" means any hardware on which the Software is installed, which may be, without limitation, a server, a work station, a virtual machine, a blade, a partition or an engine, as applicable. The initial number of Installed Systems is the number of copies of the Software that Customer purchases.
If Customer wishes to increase the number of Installed System, then Customer will purchase from Red Hat additional Services for each additional Installed System. During the term of this Agreement and for one (1) year thereafter, Customer expressly grants to Red Hat the right to audit Customer's facilities and records from time to time in order to verify Customer's compliance...
Of course Redhat is not allowed to impose this EULA on third party GPL software, but the problem is that not all of RHEL is third party GPL software. A lot of it is third party free software under licenses other than the GPL. Moreover a substantial fraction of the GPL software in RHEL is actually owned by Redhat themselves. So, ironically, the only way to install RHEL on multiple machines without support is not to buy RHEL and compile your own copy.
-
Re:The money issueTry again:
Red Hat Linux -- Red Hat's policy for Red Hat Linux distributions is to provide maintenance for at least 12 months.
The RHL 8 and RHL 9 products were EOL after 1 year. -
Re:SubscriptionI guess I misread the statement, but I think my question still stands with minor editing. I at first thought of opt-ing out of upgrading to the latest release, which would be facilitated by a subscription model. The activation service doesn't fall into a subscription model service, so I'd still like an example of Microsoft disabling a computer for opting out of subscription updates.
Come to think of it, Microsoft doesn't even offer subscription updates. They're free. And what a shock, so are Red Hat's. So both offer free updates for their OS products, one happens to offer an advanced system to monitor and deploy those updates for an extra fee. The difference is that Microsoft wanted to move entirely to fee-based updates. Red Hat has consistently delivered free updates, albeit in source form. The original comparison would be valid if you could not get those free sources for the updates, which would violate the GPL.

- You don't want RHN and Support for any of the machines (

You follow Red Hat's Trademark guidelines

Well, for one support.
Maybe. At $179 (WS) and $349 (ES), the 'Basic Editions' do not include support, at least according to this page.

Re:I Miss RedHat NetworkRemember that Red Hat (wherever possible and sensible) backport fixes into older versions so as to minimize the risks in applying their updates. Thus the 8.12.9 errata that you installed may well have been just as secure as 8.12.10. You need to reed the Red Hat advisories to see what CVE/CERT vulnerabilities they fix. For more background on Red Hat's backporting policy, read this and this.
Incidentally, I gather Debian takes broadly the same approach. The alternative is to blindly supply the latest version, risking Microsoft-style breakage with errata/hotfixes.

or not
On the Support Options page, you can buy the 'Basic' server addition for $349 and do not get support. You get updates, but no support.
-
Re:aptYou mean the updates they won't be releasing after Dec 2003 (or April 30th if you're running RH9)?
I too am moving to apt, but dpkg too - I'm moving all the servers to Debian.

> red hat alternatives since the desktop line went kaput.
Kaput? No. Overpriced? Hell yes. (More like out of their fucking mind - desktop Linux can't cost more than Windows yet)
-
Re:Why
I think that RedHat got out of the desktop biz because they were starting to feel the pain of supporting hundreds of applications in such a fragmented way.
Since they sell Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS for the desktop, I think you're confused or misinformed. -

Red Hat builds
It's worth reminding RH/Fedora users that Arjan van de Ven maintains kernel RPMs (including new module RPMs etc), and those with yum and apt can very easily test 2.6 using these files.
Read the readme.txt for full details.

Why yes! This is the quick and dirty method, but it'll get you upgraded and running. Please note that if you have lots of special needs, it might not work as well.
- Start by reading this article: http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/799 but don't follow those steps quite yet. You may not need to at all, depending on your setup and needs.
- Now go to http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/RPMS.kernel/ and download all necessary files as outlined in the previous document. Before you install the kernel RPM, make damn sure that you aren't missing anything or things break very fast. You should also take steps to backup as outlined in the first document. Now install the RPM and make any necessary bootloader changes/bootdisks. That may do it for you.
- If you have to make some changes (ie I needed ntfs), download the kernel source (I had trouble with the rpm on that site, ymmv) and do a make oldconfig followed by a make (x or g)config to get the small changes you need. Good luck!
- Start by reading this article: http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/799 but don't follow those steps quite yet. You may not need to at all, depending on your setup and needs.

GNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoorGNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor

Re:Apt
Hey, at least Red Hat has a built in packaging system now. I ran Red Hat 7 back when it was the shit to have, but I was always frustrated that there was no integrated packaging system. I changed over to gentoo about 2 years ago, and I have always had trouble getting my Wind0ze buddys to make the switch to linux, because I like to show them my setup, and they tend to like it, especially because of the portage packaging sytem. When I give them Red Hat CD's, and they install it on their system at home, however, I get basic questions like "So, how exactly do i update/install software." The problem is, gentoo and debian are too hard for most users to run/maintain, but Red Hat kinda sucks.
With Fedora, however, the packaging system is coherent and comprehensive (That "Red Hat Network" system just didn't cut it before). A transition to apt is definatly a step in the right direction for the Red Hat desktop. Fedora is brand new though, so of course it still has it's quirks. With a little bit of time, I think that Fedora can become a solid desktop distribution. -
Re:Redhat doesn't sell licences?
What about using Red Hat Professional Workstation? Ok, so it isn't a path to their Enterprise line, but it is supported.
What's Included
Red Hat Professional Workstation is a complete suite of tools for the power desktop user.
- Supports up to 2 processor x86 workstations
- Includes applications and services power desktop users demand
- Bluecurve, Ximian Evolution, OpenOffice.org, Mozilla
- Web Server powered by Apache
- Samba, NFS, CUPS
- GCC 3.2
- Includes one year of Red Hat Network updates
- Includes 30 days of phone and web installation support
Red Hat Professional Workstation is designed for the advanced user requiring a single Linux desktop deployment with limited support and management capabilities.
Features not available with Red Hat Professional Workstation (but standard in Red Hat Enterprise Linux) include:
- Renewable Subscriptions -- Customers looking for supported environments or deployments for longer than 1 year should consider Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Additional Support options -- Customers needing support beyond basic installation should look to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Upgrade paths to Red Hat Enterprise Linux -- Professional Workstation is not a subscription product. We recommend that customers looking for the benefits of a annually renewable support and maintenance contract look to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Hardware and Software Certifications -- Not available with Professional Workstation. For environments where certified hardware and software functionality are key - Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the recommended solution.
- Open Source Architecture Integration -- Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides the necessary components and support for integration into a managed corporate desktop infrastructure. Red Hat Enterprise Linux will be the core platform of the Open Source Architecture.

Re:Academic Pricing :: goodbye redhat
Using "trademarked" pictures to do an endrun around the gpl to get "per processor" licensing is an end run around the GPL and ought to be treated as such. (This is, as far as I can tell, what they are doing w/ "enterprise" redhat to prevent me from buying one "enterprise" redhat and apt-proxying my other nodes). Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.
You're mistaken I think. The RH trademarked stuff is all in seperate packages - eg redhat-logos and anaconda-images (and i cant actually think of any other package), see also Section 2 of Appendix 1 in the service agreement for RHEL (see URL below). The redhat network packages
/might/ also be RedHat trademarked/owned, though they're not listed in App. 1, S.2.RedHat do
/not/ licence Enterprise Linux. The packages, other than the scant few with RH trademarks, are mostly GPL licenced (or other 'free' licence), AIUI, and i've read the document at http://www.redhat.com/licenses/rhel_us_3.html which, despite the URL is *not* a licence but a service agreement. So you can copy and redistribute them at will, AIUI, as per normal with GPL licenced software. The service agreement for RHEL does claim that "Red Hat and others" own all rights to the software and its components, however with the caveat of "subject to the applicable license" - which obviously would be GPL or BSD style in nearly all cases. Ie, you're pretty much free to take RHEL, strip out the few non-free packages and repackage it under some other non-trademark infringing name. (nor could you make claims to it being like RHEL, same situation as used to exist with resellers of downloaded RHL CDs).However, what RedHat have done is to make it a condition of their support contract that you honestly report how many machines you deploy RHEL on. The support contract fee scales with number of deployed installs, obviously, and as per the service agreement you are committed to paying at the listed price (or otherwise agreed price) per installed "server", see Part II, Section 2.2 of the agreement at URL above. Further, RedHat are allowed to audit you to establish that you are in compliance with the service agreement, see Part I, S4. So, if you install extra RHEL servers RedHat are entitled to charge you for the discrepancy in the number of installed servers, with a provision for a 20% surcharge if the discrepancy exceeds 5%. If you were to fail to pay, RedHat naturally would have the option to terminate the agreement and sue you for breach of contract, as well as pursue you for the monies owed.
So (bearing in mind that i'm just Joe Random Slashdot Poster):
- When you buy RHEL, you are not paying for a "licence" to use RHEL. You are paying for a service agreement for a period of time with RH to gain services such as updates, support, etc. for your installed servers.
-
You
/are/ allowed to copy just about all the RHEL packages AFAICT. RH, TTBOML have *not* been sneaky and tried to 'taint' each package with trademarked material. (probably because of the potential to invalidate the licence and hence lose their right to distribute). There are a couple of packages which are not freely redistributable, and RedHat have been nice enough to point out which ones those are. - If you have a service agreement with RedHat however, you really really should not risk installing copies of RHEL without increasing your agreed installed server count with RH. Certainly not by more than 5%, or you risk hefty penalties (in addition obviously to risking continued RH service itself, and possibly further civil action by RH against you.).
-
Whether a RH customer could redistribute 'respun' RHEL CDs (ie RHEL stripped of all packages under RH licences/trademark restrictions) without breaching the service agreement is unclear. I do not see any language that disallows this, and Appendix 1, S1 seems to actually affirm that the customer

Re:Academic Pricing :: goodbye redhatThats not quite what I meant. Lets look at the converse. The "standard" no phone support no DHCP/BIND Workstation Redhat (WS) but 1 yr of updates is $179. If you want BIND/DHCP (ES) its $379 w/ no phone support.
After 1 year, to get the updates you have to pay
another $174 per year for the "enterprise"
and $89/year for the "WS" edition.
So it is $179 1st year and $89 per year afterwards for WS.
It is $379 1st year and and $174 per year afterwards for ES.
I think its fair that perhaps I shouldnt' be bitching about the academic prices :).. BUT apples to apples cost for a standard workstation is more for redhat than it is for commercial use for companies and personal but noneducational use
as far as I can tell.
Here is the
list of prices for the updates.
And here is the list of prices for the original OS.
Also the EULA of redhat leaves much to be desired (as has been pointed out elsewhere in this /. thread)

LOLF ROFFLE ROR LMAO
How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her ! I mean just look at this girl ! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox . As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx . I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass ?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat ! Don't you wish you could get one of these ? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine

DB2, Oracle, RedHat Database. What does exchange do that open source mail servers can't do, save for calendaring? If calendaring is the only thing, I wouldn't say that's "far more advanced". Or do you need a GUI?

Re:Odd response to questions 10a/b/c
Here
See the reply that is higher up in this thread for more details. You can't buy RHEL without agreeing to this.
I am moving most of our servers to Debian now because of this Red Hat fiasco.
No, I don't work for MS. Hell I even own a little RHAT stock. I really like RHAT, I just want people to be educated so we don't see the next big story "Red Hat sues company X for support agreement violations".
Ideally I'd like Red Hat to remove the obnoxious parts of the support agreement. I'd be a hell of a lot more likely to buy some RHEL server support seats. -
Re:Odd response to questions 10a/b/c
Sure thing:
REPORTING AND AUDIT. If Customer wishes to increase the number of Installed System, then Customer will purchase from Red Hat additional Services for each additional Installed System. During the term of this Agreement and for one (1) year thereafter, Customer expressly grants to Red Hat the right to audit Customer's facilities and records from time to time in order to verify Customer's compliance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement.
Red Hat EULA
Now before you say "But that's just the support agreement!", note that it's impossible to purchase RHEL without agreeing to it. You can download src.rpms and compile it all yourself, but if you purchase even one single copy, you are subject to that agreement, and then couldn't increase the number of installed servers even by downloading and compiling clean src.rpms. This obviously violates the GPL, if enforced this way. Another section of this agreement says that "nothing here should be taken to override the GPL", but if that's true, why do they even say the first part at all?
I sure don't want my company to be the test case in court to see if the agreement is unenforcable or not.
Here's an article about it:

Which OS and desktop environments you, your colleagues and friends use every day?

I have not used proprietary software for many years. I run a 5 node Linux cluster at home. I use Gnome.
You know, I would love to know what he does with that cluster. I wonder if he set up his own 5-node Linux Virtual Server like I am.
