I have seen the same thing - by the time you hit 60, you get reduced to being a warm body for someone else, and your 1-3 keys get nicely polished. This can't keep the industry busy for all that long.

Blizzard should do two things

1- Limit access to a dungeon to players who are within +/- 5 levels of each other (to prevent people from farming equipment for their "twink" characters)

2- Restrict enchant levels. Why should a level 19 rogue have crusader or life stealing?

For programmers, networking is a nightmare. Forget the difficult part of making a complex game. Networking is a nightmare all by itself. There are simply game design limitations attributed to that.

Being aware of these limitations, Blizzard should have known better. On my webpage criticizing World of Warcraft, http://www.redrival.com/hateown/ I postulated that Blizzard's design team is to blame for network instability. In a graph on that website I've shown my view of Blizzard's design team constantly increasing massive interaction throughout their worlds. I suspect this is the sole reason why they are unable to cope with volume of customers. As more and more people fight a single super-monster, the networking takes a beating. If the monster hits someone in a particular dungeon (aka instance), aside from the obvious the server has to:

- cycle through 40 players to see if anyone else got hit by splash damage
- notify each of the 40 players that someone or more people got hit

furthermore, when a single player whacks at the monster with their sword (or what have you), the server has to notify every other client about it.

In their design, Blizzard made use of a synchronized clock "aka tick" that is used for synchronizing actions. Good thinking, but it has a breaking point. I believe they are now reaching that point by causing more and more and more players to "chunk". Now, they are dumping the task of making everything better on network admins and scapegoating network issues as opposed to content design issues. It is too late now to take back multiple instances added through patches.

That's what girlfriends are for : playing priests. You play a warrior or shaman and whack at things while she clicks heal, heal, shield, heal, heal, shield, heal, heal, shield. Rinse and repeat.

I hypothesized that Blizzard is just trying to keep players occupied; as proof, I wrote up a web page detailing my problems with their game and made a graph suggesting their design trends (based on their own patch notes).

If you read through that page and temporarily consider it as some level of evidence, it will explain why Blizzard is not responding to customer complaints the way they should. Bottom line: they are just trying to keep players occupied.

Time.

What distinguishes work from fun? What distinguishes game from real life?

What is a time sink? Are hobbies time sinks? Are they all fun?

If a player feels that they have to buy gold, that is an indicator of what they don't have time for. Buying gold is a quick fix, and sure, entire books can be written on what that does to everyone; however, I digress.

I personally blame Blizzard for designing their World of Warcraft game as a time sink. It is my belief that everything they do for the game ultimately requires their customers to remain nothing but occupied -- and that is their objective; to hang on to as many customers as they can until a new patch comes out that requires them to pay for it. Many players feel that their game is more work than game.

Having quit the game recently, I made a nifty little website with a list of complaints about WoW, including even a pretty pink graph using some real data. It highlights how Blizzard equates time with "worth" in the game. Anyone who doesn't have insane amounts of time to spend playing and "grinding" or "farming" shouldn't play it.

I may not have specificaly named gold farmers and poor state of affairs, waste of time in it but I certainly did use the theme as glue between thoughts -- and there is a climax -- private servers! Talk about saving time and obsoleting gold sales.

Of course, you would have to figure out a way to push the shield out uniformly, but that doesn't seem too dificult...

From my understanding of the DMCA (anyone, feel free to correct me), it would be illegal (under section 1201a, I believe) to circumvent any access control device. Your ACD, my ACD, MSFT's ACD, the DVDCCA's ACD, any single one.

That's the danger in the DMCA. It's written so broadly that it cannot be enforced in any other manner than selectively. I mean, really, are you going to file suit for breaking your own ACD? Probably not. Could Novell sue you for breaking their ACD for {personal use|study and critique|anything that doesn't actually affect their bottom line}? Potentially. Could Plymouth sue you for pulling a General Lee on one of their cars (under an automotive equivilant of the DMCA)? Probably.

The important point to remember is that, unless you are the distribution channel, the DMCA says that you have almost no rights whatsoever.

For home power users, backing up the image daily is one thing. For home `honey, how do I get to my email' users, backups are things you do in a car.

I think that the age of general computer ignorance is about to end. I think it has to, considering just how many people will be devastated by this. It's one thing to have Win9x crash - the general populace is used to that. Hrmmm...slipery analysis indeed. I think that the context of `good' needs to be more clearly defined.

Good in the Slashdot sense: high S/N ratio, ability to post freely, ability to excercise Free Speech(tm).

Good in the F-451 sense: protection of society from itself, lack of dissent, conformity amongst the masses.

While the general rationalization is the same (good for posters, good for society), I think that the `good' means two totally different things given the differing contexts. Therefore, I must conclude that one can only compare /. moderation to F-451 in a very shallow sense, as the goals of each are diametrically opposed.

Keep in mind that it was Fast Compay that said the software is bug-free. They then turn around and say it had bugs in it :-)

Anyway, the article mentions that the Shuttle Group uses a database to keep track of bugs. Whenever one bug is found, it is eliminated and then placed into the bug database. The testers then look over every other part of the codebase that has similar {contructs|calls|whatever} and analyze those parts for bugs. Considering how many entries are in the bug database, I would suspect that all of the code has been thoroughly gone over...

...which still doesn't ensure 100% percent that it's bug-free. Being human, we cannot, by definition, be 100% sure that a particular codebase is 100% bug-free. However, I think it's safe to say that the code is 99.995% bug-free.

I'd ride the Shuttle on those odds...

• Real time data over HTTP (Important for employees on the road).
• You don't need a web person to do dynamic updates all the time. WebDB handles that for you.
• Your DBA can concentrate on doing DBA stuff and not worry about a scripting language always hitting the database.

• The default pages look cheesey
• It's more difficult (in my experiance, YMMV) to have pages generated by WebDB conform to a company look and feel
• If you want more processing of the data done, you have to rewrite the stored procedures. If you're going to do that, why use WebDB?

Something that may be outside the scope of your question, but I thought I'd include it too.

I recently attended a coference on EJB and CORBA. I met a guy who does customized home pages. He starts with a generic XML template. Based on user preferences, he has servlets (using a SAX compliant tool; look here) parse the user-defined template and insert whatever info is needed.

The coolest thing about this is the fact that it's all very lightweight. Also, the process is infinately scaleable (if you want to go full blown EJB and CORBA).

I was actually thinking of the Shire after the Hobbits' return.

Saruman was in control of the shire and doing his best to destroy it. Trees had been cut, sherrifs were hassling the populace, and black smoke was choking the air.

After the battle in the square, Saruman could have been easily taken, tried, and executed for his crimes. As a matter of fact, that's what most of the town wanted.

Frodo said no.

Worm was the one who killed Saruman. Frodo knew when to pursue, and when to lay off.

That was actually the example I was thinking of... :-)

First, I admire RMS for being able to always stick to his guns. Let's admit it: there are those of us here who dislike RMS and do not agree with him. There are those who feel he is too inflexible, and that he is doing us a great disservice by being such a zealot. To these people I say, `Are you able to pursue something that's as important to you as Free Software is to Stallman for twenty years without losing your vigor? Are you still willing to fight as hard today as you were when you began?'.

I am unable to answer either question in the affirmative...yet.

Second: Robin, where are the poster's names? Why was Bruce the only person who received credit for his comments? Does this stem from the Katz-book thing? Can we expect to see only famous people owning their comments?

Did RMS do this?

Third: Though I hate to say it, the more I read about RMS' philosophy and the more I understand, the more I agree. I don't think he's going too far. When one side of an argument goes too far in one direction (UTICA, DMCA, etc), the other side must react in an equally forcefull manner to restore balance. The danger here is going too far after you have won.

Would it have been right for the UN to nuke Iraq after her armies had been destroyed? (Bad analogy, I know, but the only better one I can think of involves Tolkien, and I don't want to go there ;-)

In any event, I'm glad the answers have finally been posted. I look forward to the other interviews that are still pending.

IE hasn't been rewritten from the ground up in years. I can't speak for the iCab (their website doen't specify how much of the code is new).

Keep in mind that everything you see in Mozilla is brand spanking new. To put it another way, imagine how much something like XEMACS would suck if it was written all at once (while developing new technologies (XUL) no less!).

Very. Look to the bottom of the chrome. You should see a build ID (mine's 2000022820 (M14)). Send that and your exact machine configuration (i.e. NT 4.0 build 1381 SP4.01 SR1, or whatever).

Maybe there's something that Mozilla (Sorry, can't call it Netscape) needs that doesn't work quite right for a particular coinfiguration. Whatever the case, they need to know.

Also, so long as you can reproduce the problem consistantly, it's a bug.

Netscape 5 was the original codebase to get open-sourced(TM). It stank so bad that the Mozilla guys threw it away and started from scratch.

FWIW, Mozilla (I'll still call it that, and Netscape be damned) renderd java.sun.com just fine. Maybe it is bad programming; I don't know how well you code.

I figure if it renders the java that the java folks write, it must be doing something right ;-)
