New Panamax
The current expansion of the Panama canal goes online next year. "New Panamax" ships are 13,000 TEU vs 5,000 for current Panamax ships. All the important East coast ports have already been or a currently being dredged out to accommodate these ships. This was accomplished quickly and quietly beginning in 2012 when Obama exempted the dredging operations from the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.
Guess they'll be needing another bunch of pencil whipped wavers to dredge out the ports even deeper for the EquadorMax ships, because what China wants China gets.

Postal is an Ideological Fanatic
The way he defines success and failure is framed to say all missile defense fails.
Iron Dome uses a combination of a proximity (radar activited) fuse and fragmentation. Sometimes the interceptor destroys the warhead. Sometimes it causes an explosion of the propellant which destroys the warhead. Sometimes it simply breaks the incoming missile or rocket into segments or destroys its ability to follow its planned ballistic path. According to Lloyd and Postol, if the warhead isn’t destroyed the interceptor failed.
You don’t need a Ph.D. to see the immense flaw in this logic: if someone fires a missile at you and you aren’t hit that is good news.

Re:Rsults are results that are already published!
While his opponent ran on a platform of immigration deadlock, Cantor didn't lose the election because of that. Mitch McConnell was also pro amnesty and even more 'liberal' about immigration than Cantor and he won by a landslide.
Cantor would have lost it to anyone with a little bit of organizational skill. He lost because he got arrogant and stopped paying attention to his constituents. They weren't pissed about immigration, they were pissed because he took them for granted as he played in DC instead of paying attention to his district.

Re:A track-history of lawlessness
Don't forget:
* The Obama Administration, no doubt with an eye to the 2014 elections, has announced that certain parts of the Affordable Care Act (a/k/a Obamacare) will simply be postponed until after the election. Nothing in the ACA gives this power to the Executive branch.
* President Obama attempted to make "bench" appointments when Congress was still in session. Months later, this one got shot down in the courts.
* The IRS went after political enemies of the Administration. There may or may not have been direct orders from President Obama. (I am not ruling out something along the lines of "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" instead of direct orders.) Not only is selective enforcement of the law illegal, but the IRS released confidential details of some conservative organizations to those organizations' political enemies, which is absolutely illegal with no possible wiggle room.
* Eric Holder's Department of Justice has a history of flouting the law.
I read an article that observed that one of the traditional checks on the power of government is the worry that, when the pendulum shifts and the other party is in power, that the other party might start taking advantage of any precedents you set. The article speculated that the Obama Administration isn't worried about this, as the mainstream media is solidly in Obama's pocket and yet implacably opposed to the Republicans. This leaves the Obama Administration free to do things that would get any Republican a firestorm of horrible publicity.
Fans of Bill Clinton, after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, used to chant "Bush Lied, People Died. Clinton Lied, Nobody Died." Remember that nobody died in the Watergate scandal, and think very hard about the Benghazi scandal. But the mainstream media isn't interested in Benghazi or any of the other scandals, any more than they have to be.
I'm not sure why I bothered to write this as somebody will mod it down to -1 really fast, rather than writing a rebuttal.

Re:The Boston Globe was insanely left-wing....
Any what?
Security. You claimed there was zero security. He was with a group that had 3 armed guards if I remember correctly; sufficient for personal protection, but not an ambush.
Regarding the request to not spoil the investigation by spilling details:
"The emails, ranging from Sept. 14 to Sept. 15, indicated that CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell requested that references to Al Qaeda, an Al Qaeda linked terrorist group operating in Eastern Libya, and prior terrorist attacks in the area be scrubbed from public talking points--hours before State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland made a similar request, as previously reported."
As far as birth certificates, the courts generally hold that it's up to a given State to certify births in that State. If you want to complain about O's bc, complain to Hawaii, not O.

Want to catch up?
Obama trumped the Endangered Species Act to allow our Eastern ports to be dredged for the Super Panamax shipping coming in 2015. Why not for clean energy?
Beating China is easy. Just suspend a few regs, starting with the ESA and exempt 'clean' energy development from pressure group lawsuits.
Instead, our 'clean' energy dies the death of a thousand cuts in courtrooms while you mopes whinge about Republicans and the budget.
Whatever. Suck it. You made it.

Re:From the summary.... It's Metallurgical Coal
It's not economically sensible to ship regular, lower-grade coal for producing electricity all around the world.
This is factually incorrect. Coal used for power generation is called `steam coal' and the recent growth of US coal exports is due to steam coal.
You may expect all of this to accelerate rapidly. As the story points out, met coal is going to China from the East coast the hard way; via the Atlantic, Cape of Good Hope, etc. Our pollution outsourcing and de-industrialization needs are so great that the Panama Canal is being expanded to accommodate much larger ships. Simultaneously we're waving environmental regs right and left to dredge up East coast bays for those ships.
This will all be up and running in 2015.
Once "Super-Post-Panamax" shipping can haul coal from the East Coast to China via the Pacific we'll see huge growth in coal exports and more de-industrialization. Coal going that way and finished goods coming back.

CFC ban yet another case of jumping to conclusions
First of all, there never was a "hole" - a better term would be an "ozone reduction". Its cause remains unknown. There are many theories, and the one exclusively blaming CFC's is made increasingly implausible by recent research, as well as the recent ozone increase. What is known is that the government intervention in banning CFC's had some small negative impact on the quality of life of almost everyone alive today. The effect of the ban on the ozone layer, if any, won't kick in until the CFC particles already released begin to exit the atmosphere many decades from now...
There are many natural cycles that affect this planet and this solar system, and modern science has not been around long enough to measure and fully understand all of them. However "we don't know" is not an acceptable answer to many people - they want a story that sounds good and fits their preconceived political beliefs...

Redstate's terrible ad hominem aside, they are correct. The Right is just too dysfunctional to mount an effective campaign. And that's not the Left's fault at all; no one is stopping the Right from putting boots on the ground, or being more precise in GOTV efforts.
It comes down to this, if you can't win when the sitting President has had 8% unemployment for pretty much his whole term, you do NOT deserve to be in charge of ANYTHING. I am glad Obama won, because even if Mitt was "right and just" he and his party are too incompetent to be trusted.

Just another liberal happy to kill for the cause I suppose. There sure are a disturbing number of you around these days, unwilling to debate and only to destroy.
That's some nice projection you've got going on there. I invite you to visit any number of message boards and count the number of death threats vs. liberals vs. death threats against conservatives and see if it supports your assumption.
--Jeremy
I don't think it's projection when he's posting on a forum with hundreds of posts wishing for Republicans to die. Projection is when your project your own faults onto others who do not have those faults. So, in this case, it is hardly what I'd call "projection".
Next, I challenge you to go to "right wing" sites and find me some death wishes. May I recommend Hot Air, Red State or even News Busters. Now, granted, you will find a few whack jobs out there, but nothing like what you have seen here and nothing like what you may find on Democratic Underground or Daily Kos.
Sorry, but in light of what I've read here, it would appear that you are the one who is projecting.
And that "liberal" Jesus was against sexual deviancy, which includes homosexuality. That's not exactly what I would call a "liberal". Sure, Jesus was a liberal for someone living he first century, but not a liberal by today's standard. You should really clarify that.

Gordon Letwin's OS/2 post-mortem
Letwin was OS/2's chief architect and one of Gates' most trusted employees at the time. He wrote the book that introduced the operating system to applications developers (now available for a bargain price!).
Here is a Usenet post Letwin wrote in 1995, after it was obvious that OS/2 had lost out to Windows 95 (and eventually NT/2000) in the marketplace.
BTW I also found Letwin in an early group photo of Microsoft (Letwin is second from the right in the middle row). By comparison, here is the photo for Mitt Romney and Bain Capital

Re:Not all bad
however, Romney does not have a good chance, his chances approach zero.
Maybe, but it's still a little early. Regardless, I'm sure Perry would happily say the exact same thing that Romney did; all of today's Republicans believe that corporations are people. And their supporters are dumb enough to believe them.
if the economy is rebounding around election time, it'll be Obama.
I seriously doubt it to be honest, and even if the economy is rebounding I hope he doesn't get re-elected, but instead is replaced with a different Democrat. He's been a terrible president. Just now, he's trying to take away black people's jobs and force them to be outsourced overseas. Why does Obama want black people, the people who supported him the most in 2008, to be forced into unemployment?
What's really disgusting is how no one ever talks about how the people have another option in 2012; they always frame it as Obama vs. the Republican who wins the primaries. Being the President does NOT guarantee that you'll win your own party's primaries; four times before, a sitting President did not, plus LBJ gave up on his re-election campaign when early results showed his popularity to be in the toilet. The Democrats need to elect someone else. Any of the other Dems running in the primaries in 2008 would have made a better President than this guy.

This affects more than the customers
As one of the nation's largest union employers, this bodes well for those who support unions.
This also bodes well for those in the seciton of the Venn diagram who both hate unions and think that AT&T sucks. They have a brand new outlet to scream about how lazy union workers are responsible for AT&T's sucky network and poor customer service and are going to ruin the T Mobile experience. -
Re:This reminds me of WW 1
This came-up in the other Slashdot discussions and I am compelled to post it here too since this misinformation seems to have stuck. Comcast did not put any restrictions on Netflix. Comcast and Level 3 communications (who happens to host Netflix) had a peering agreement, which Level 3 violated. It has nothing to do with freedom, or network neutrality, or Netflix.

Fairness Doctrine 2.0What's really scary is that an unelected bureaucrat is stating whether you like it or not, the FCC will implement net neutrality. A sweeping change over one of the most influential technologies that impacts almost every American... yet no one gets to vote for it. Net Neutrality has morphed from what it once was when people started talking about it (a means to prevent ISPs from throttling/blocking content in order to create a tiered service model) to a means for bringing the Fairness Doctrine 2.0 to the Internet.
Slashdotters talk about the technical merits of the proposals, but the politicians and bureaucrats are talking about something entirely different.

TSA confiscates nail clippers from soldiers
I haven't seen this story posted yet, and it's far too good to pass up.
http://www.redstate.com/erick/2010/11/18/another-tsa-outrage/
To summarize: 330 soldiers coming back from Afghanistan were flying back to the US. They were carrying (all unloaded) M4 assault rifles, some carrying M9 pistols, and some carrying M-240B machine guns. After flying part of the way back and dropping off 100 soldiers, the TSA decide the rest need to deplane and all need to go through screening again. They find a pair of nail clippers on a soldier, and confiscate them, saying they are a potential weapon.
The soldiers continue on with their unloaded guns and fly on to their destination.
Now really, are the TSA so moronic, that they don't understand the ASSAULT RIFLES could be used as a bludgeon weapon far more effectively then a pair of toenail clippers? I mean, come on, these guys just got back from fighting in the terrorist's safe haven. About the last thing they're going to do is to help the psycho idiots, and yet they confiscate their toenail clippers, and let them continue on with the rifles?
Really?
No, REALLY?

Re:Retest
"OK, Rand Paul was witness to his supporters holding down and stomping on a woman."
False. As clearly seen in the video here
He was well clear of the area and moving in a different direction.
"He did not stop it nor denounce it after being pressed on it."
False. He denounced it, and fired the guy from his campaign.
But this is all futile. If there's one thing this entire slashdot thread has made crystal clear, it's that people will believe what they want to believe, and to hell with the truth.

True, but that guy was being robbed by an illegal statute that was going to be fixed after the bill was passed. (oh, where have I heard that one before?!)
a christian militia that was allegedly planning on murdering police officers
emphasis mine. And what does being Christian have anything to do with it. I can guarantee, if this group was as malicious as the media make them out to be, all of the Christian sects would stand against their actions.
people screaming threats at e.g., Obama, at conservative/tea party rallies.
Most of the TEA party rallies around the nation are very peaceful, except for the liberals trying to subvert the party. Many of those people are then asked to leave.
I'm glad that the FBI is checking up on these things
Heaven forbid they check on the real terrorists that attempt to blow up their pants on planes, their trucks on streets, or check on personnel that may be psychotic because he is of a certain religion (and are afraid of a profiling charge). Oh, that's right, there is no terrorism, there are no terrorists, and jihad is a legitimate tenet. I will agree with you. I do not want an assassination. It is interesting to note, however, that it is usually the left that are the ones committing the violence. (Don't like those sources, doesn't matter, fact is fact no matter the source.)

There's the truth then there's the real truth...
After reading the linked article above I got curious as to what exactly the proposed changes were. I had a sneaking suspicion that someone wasn't telling the whole truth and after some searching it turns out that I was right. It seems that Jefferson was never going to be cut from the curriculum and most of the other changes the article mentions (which is based off an AP story) were either over exaggerated or flat out lied about. Here is the real truth: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/joshua-sharf/2010/05/23/have-ap-or-denver-post-actually-read-new-texas-curriculum. This is just another example of how the media is just swallowing the lies the progressive wing is just throwing out there without doing any damn fact checking. Just like how they keep promoting net neutrality as good even though members of the administration have said quite openly that they have every intention of using the legislation to censor content: http://www.redstate.com/neil_stevens/2010/05/20/dont-let-them-tell-you-they-dont-want-to-censor-the-internet/ How does the old saying go? Trust half of what you read and none of what you hear? With this administration that quote has never rung truer.

Re:specificallyAhhh, "lately" is such a useful word. Allows you to completely ignore similar things happening to Democrats. Impressive multitasking! Reporting AND pelting charter buses with eggs! So intentionally causing damage to property whilst recording license plates and such ISN'T threatening, only verbally threatening is? I'm confused! My head spins!
I did search for Kenneth Gladney... I was kinda curious about your description, since most reports I read stated that he is a Democrat-leaning supporter, who happened to be selling merchandise outside a rally. Thugs? Sure. Re:Food for thought
The matter of corporate bonuses is entirely between the managers receiving the bonuses and the shareholders who hire them.
Dude, the shareholders are as pissed off as anybody. The interlocking nature of corporate governance makes it impossible for them to have a real say in this.
Anyway, we're all a little tired of this libertarian ideological lockstep. This idea that private agreements are private business only seems to apply when it's to the benefit of the wealthy and powerful. I'm willing to go along with it most of the time — entrepreneurs needs a lot of freedom to do their thing — but it can't be the last word in all arguments. Right now we're reaching the point where all the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few individuals, and the economy is expected to function solely for their benefit. That's actually a kind of socialism. Not any kind Karl Marx would recognize, but it resembles all the old socialist states where the economies existed solely to benefit a small ruling elite while the economy at large stagnated. The only difference here is that the elite is a collection of private individuals, not some political cadre that waves a red flag. Though, ironically enough, the American right now also waves a red flag.
Besides which, do recall that many of the companies that pay themselves these huge bonuses are begging for government help!

Re:I personallyObama has certainly taken the crown in the Democratic campaign as "the candidate making best use of the internet."
Actually, what's interesting is that the video was entirely supporter-created, not created by the campaign. In an interview they mentioned that they didn't even know if Obama had seen the video himself.
Take, for example, this clip I saw yesterday. Not sure exactly who is behind it, but the message is inspiring and - frankly - can melt through the icy cynicism of the Grinchiest Clintonite.
It's not just Clintonites that were impressed by the video. Via Daily Kos, some quoted comments from Conservative forum site redstate.com about the video: I don't care if you are the biggest Obama hater out there -- you WILL think this video is cool. Obama's "Yes we can" speech in New Hampshire was historically memorable. This video cements the inspiration found in his words. He may be full of hopeful air but if you take the speech in a more personal way, it can certainly rustle something good in your heart. ...
Give credit where due with Obama. I dont agree with him on much of anything, but I must admit I like the guy. I dont feel the gut-wrenching, sickness and dread at the words "President Obama" that the words "President Clinton" invoke.
I have often said when talking at work and school with friends that an Obama Presidency would be tolerable because of one thing; the progression of race dialog in the nation. He would do a lot of healing.
Obama is not without his weaknesses, but he's a good speaker, rallies the crowd, and actually comes across as a nice guy. As to the electability issue, I think either McCain or Romney could beat Clinton (though McCain has an edge), but Obama would likely beat either, and possibly by a significant margin.
The more I watch Obama, the more I like him. If only he weren't a Democrat.
I see him as cultural leader. The world needs people like Obama - who represent a genuine spirit of optimism. Optimism, however wonderful and necessary, can be unrealistic. (I'm not a pessimist - just a realist!) He is refreshing - what people want to hear after these years of war and terrorism. But that is why an Obama presidency would be a decision based on instant gratification. We want peace and change and hope NOW.
2008 is going to be tough for the GOP. Obama will defeat us and will help elect Democrats up and down the ticket all over the country. -
Re:please actually read my review, it's not that l
What do you think of RedState? I'm a liberal, but I found their discussions quite interesting to join in. They are pretty strict about trolling, but on the other hand I was able to join the discussion as long as I was careful and uberpolite about disagreements. (I stopped visiting because my account was deactivated, and while part of my paranoia assumed it was because of my POV, I think actually it was just technical incompetence.)
This was a few years ago, however, and stopping back in it seems they've declined a little -- in particular, they've gone over more to aggressive talking points-defense in the manner of a lot of other sites, left and right. -
Re:Let them be happy, then. Here are a few links about the half or so of Americans who believe things about Iraq that aren't true. Here are some more. Most of these refer to the studies they're referring to, or are good starting-points if you want to do more research into the subject. I spent a whopping 5 minutes googling for this info, so I can understand how you never came across it in all your TV watching.
You obviously think everyone is an idiot.
No, if I thought they were an idiot then it wouldn't matter if they watched TV, because idiots are beyond hope anyway. I'm saying they are poorly served by their choice of news outlet. Me pointing out that TV doesn't inform you doesn't make me a bad person, or arrogant, or whatever you think I am. Please don't resort to ad hominem attacks just because you don't like what I'm saying. I've been reading this stuff for YEARS because even if you just read blogs, if you read blogs from different political leanings you get more of that nuance you like so much. If you read only Daily Kos or only Red State then you get a skewed view of reality, but if you read both and follow up with more research, you get more naunce and perspective than if you read only one. Some people don't have time to read 8 hours of fucking news every day to meet your standards.
They have that much time to watch TV, don't they? Are they meeting your fucking standards yet? Me pointing out that people believe crap that isn't true, don't know what is, and do these things because they watch TV doesn't make me some arrogant ass who has some mythical "standards" I'm setting for people. I'm just pointing out that watching TV is inferior to critical reading when it comes to keeping yourself somewhat informed. One should take in all sources of news and make up their own minds.
So they don't have time to read, but they have time to watch yet more TV and then "make up their own minds"? Look, could you point me to which TV news program I can watch tonight to learn more about whether or not torture has taken place in US-run prisons abroad? Which TV program can I wach tonight to tell me more about whether or not the War on Terror is undermining habeus corpus? Or about the effects privatization had on the quality of care at the Army hospitals? Or about the billions of our taxpayer money that was handed out from the back of pickup trucks in Iraq, with no accountability? Are their Fox News exposes, or for that matter 60-Minutes exposes, I can watch tonight? I sure as hell can read articles and books about them, and I don't have to rely on my cable provider. Help me out here--what TV programs do I watch to get as educated as you on these subjects? -

Re:I, for one,...Ah, the old slashdot-popular canard that Dems and Repubs are the same party. That's akin, in slashdot analogy style, to saying Windows and Linux are the same, since they're not BeOS.
Lieberman is the right-most leaning Democrat in Congress, comparing the rest of Democrats to him is ridiculous. Especially considering that Connecticut Democrats voted him out for being too conservative. If you really think D's and R's are the same, then you think Tom Delay and John Conyers really have the same policies and voting record?
Go right now and compare, say, Daily Kos, a Democratic blog with Red State, A Republican blog. See the opinions and voices of the people there.
Long story short, if you think Democrats and Republicans are really one and the same, you're either trolling or utterly clueless.

It goes beyond the satire of deserving fools in our political system and leans closer to outright hatred of traditional American values and anyone in flyover country.
This is exactly why I (as a eeeeeeeeeeevil American-hating Democrat) can't take seriously any of the supposed Republican leaders, people like you, or members of places like RedState and other conservative blogs.
Any disagreement that goes beyond the most mildest of statements is met with a level of venom that's hard to believe sometimes. And when they receive a less than polite response in return, suddenly all sorts of disbelieving comments about Democrats/liberals being uncooperative, full of rage, hating America, etc. start flying. Because surely the only way someone could disagree with their shining right-wing views is to be retarded or a terrorist or something. -
Parent not insightfulHey there.
If you could read you'd know that he's actually meta-quoting Josh Trevino of http://redstate.com/ via http://www.swordscrossed.org/?p=50. Here's what you didn't read to illuminate the situation:By far the most enlightening thing I have read on the blogosphere in the past two months came from Republican Operative and founder of RedState.com Joshua Trevino, on Armando's and Trevino's new blog Swords Crossed. In an incredibly instructive piece--and I encourage everyone to read the whole thing--Josh Trevino does us all the favor of introducing us to the Overton Window.
Anyway, I know it's both faster and easier to just jump straight to the ad hominem rather than make any substantive argument. I don't fault you for it. Least resistance is the natural order. -
Re:Am I the only one who thinks this?
That is a great question. Thanks for posting the link to http://www.redstate.com/ because it is a great site and I intend to visit it daily.
