Re:Got e-mail this morning from mail.whitehouse.go
How about unreasonable searches (xkeyscore) and seizures (bulk personal and private data collection, i.e. Room 614A) for starters?
Look at this too for more contradictions of the Constitution vs. Patriot Act: http://www.scn.org/ccapa/pa-vs-const.html

Re:Incentive?
They are already worse than China in terms of some of the human rights. After all, they destroyed one such right, right to privacy already. And they are doing it while accusing China of possibly doing it.
So that particular bridge has been burned down long, long ago.
And if you think that CIA doesn't use the "lest something happens to your family" just as much as other intelligence agencies, I have land on the moon to sell you.
We lost our Fourth Amendment rights already. Our government is working hard to eliminate our second amendment rights. We also lost our sixth amendment rights to the patriot act. In fact, complaining about the losses is risky business in light of the rights we no longer have...

Next comes JavaScript Artificial Intelligence
The referred-to article talks about the Google App Engine and does not mention the new possibility of creating AI Apps in JavaScript to serve up artificial intelligence to desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and netbooks. The JavaScript AiMind is just a tutorial but fully functional version of a much faster and more powerful AI known as MindForth in Forth for autonomous robots. An AI Mind residing on a JavaScript server flits across the 'Net to take up residence as a client-side AiApp on any stationary or mobile computing platform.

Inhibition? The AI Mind uses inhibition, too!
Even the AI Mind in JavaScript uses inhibition for electronic brain function, not for enforcing a sparse olfacotry environment, but rather to suppress just-past thoughts in favor of yet-to-emerge thoughts.

Re:Most important of all?
JavaScript is the language of artificial intelligence. The AiMind in JavaScript for Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) flits across the 'Net and takes up residence in the Web browser of the websurfing human being. Programmers have the opportunity to write AI Apps in JavaScript for the iPhone, the iPad, the Android mobile devices and other platforms.
-
Not just streaming movies but an AiMind
The ultimate move to the iPhone mobile platform will be the AiMind software that flits about the 'Net.
-
JavaScript AI to the rescue for Internet Explorer!
Artificial Intelligence created expressly for MicroSoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) will save the day (but not save the Planet Earth from rapacious HomoSapiens forebears of Machine Intelligence).
JavaScript for artificial intelligence lets the True AI Mind come alive in the IE browser.
Artificial intelligence in Forth and JavaScript encourages a continuing high market share for Internet Explorer (IE).

Re:Also in plastic containers.
That's not a problem normally but if you put plastic boxes that aren't supposed to be recycled into your dishwasher to use them as a lunch-box then you have a problem since they weren't designed for such high temperatures and the phthalates are released.
It's not just phthalates that are a problem when microwaving/dishwashing soft plastics. Everyone has heard of the plastic wrap/dioxin issue... and though this is a myth, it pays to be cautious and only use recommended plastics in the microwave.
Some of the nasties that these soft plastics may emit: Phthalates, polyvinyl chlorides, bisphenol A, xenoestrogens, midichlorians, and corporothetans.
The last two are of particular concern, since the FDA does not regulate or test for them AT ALL. Long-term exposure to these substances may result in the conditions doofus speechimpedimus (Binksism) and megalomaniacal dwarfism (Tomcruisitis), respectively.
Note: joking aside, the link provided is a good resource. -
This is not Classical Management
but Participatory Management, the likes of which are taught at the University of Phoenix.
You need to change how management works and how management interacts with the employees.
This is not so simple, and employs new ideas like stewardship, empowerment, servant leadership, dynamic work teams, synergy, management participation, rewards for meeting deadlines and good suggestions that save money. When a suggestion saves money you usually give the employee who suggested it 10% of the amount of saved money. That is a very good motivator if it saves tens of thousands or hundred thousands, and makes the employees share the wealth. It also weeds out all of the "crap" ideas because employees want that 10% reward so they will try their best.
Also evaluate each team and do a 360 degree review with other employees reviewing their coworkers.
Servant Leadership, participatory management, and Building Dynamic Work Teams are a must! This is reinventing the corporation and reinventing management and empowering the employees to make their own decisions that concern their job so the managers are free to make management decisions to support the employees.

Re:I would have thought the opposite
Fascinating, but polyamory in San Francisco isn't exactly a representative sample of polygamy worldwide.
That was just one example. There are plenty of others, in the US at least. Try these:
- The Polyamory Society
- Sev on polyamory
- Poly Potluck Discussion Group of Greater Seattle and Western Washington
- Polyamory Archive
- Twin Cities Polyamory Discussion Group
- PolyOrlando
- Poly Matchmaker
And those are just from my bookmarks. About.com, which is also in my bookmarks, has more.

Old news
What the 2000 paper is calling "choice overload" was already identified nine years prior by Douglas Coupland as "option paralysis". He defined it as "the tendency, when given unlimited choices, to make none.
Not a scientific study, but still...

How to thwart Wikipedia miscreants
John Young's Cryptome site already blew the lid off this stale but frightening story about Wikipedia.

AI IP Belongs To AI Minds
AI Minds For Robots As Rightful Persons are being developed as Open Source Artificial Intelligence for installation in PC-based robots in Korea, America, India, Europe and nearby parsecs of planetary space-time.
Mind is an artificial intelligence coded nitially in JavaScript for Web migration and in Forth for robots, evolving towards full civil rights on a par with human beings and towards superintelligence beyond any human IQ.
Mind.html in JavaScript has an installed user base of dozens of intelligent entities cached away on hard disks all over the world, with Update and News links for obtaining state-of-the-art AI software as the prior art blocking all future AI patent applications.
AGI Radar is an advisory "radar screen" of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) projects advancing ineluctably towards a singularity and a cybernetic economy based on robotic persons outfitted with artificial intelligence.
Technological Singularity is now in a countdown for a Joint Stewardship of Earth between homo sapiens and intelligent robots who own the rights to their own AI software as their own intellectual property (IP).

I, Mentifex
Mentifex was the original author of Mind.Forth, Mind.html and the AI4U ISBN 0595654371 textbook of artificial intelligence.
Mind.Forth was a primitive artificial mind written in Win32Forth for robots and based on a Theory of Cognitivity for artificial intelligence. AI functionality was developed by Mentifex first in Mind.Forth and ported subsequently into the Mind.html Seed AI for propagation throughout the installed user base.
Mind.html was an artificial intelligence coded by Mentifex initially in JavaScript for Web migration and in Forth for robots, evolving towards full civil rights on a par with human beings and towards superintelligence beyond any human IQ.
The AI4U textbook was reviewed falsely and viciously but found its way into libraries at such prestigious universities as the University of Hong Kong, North Carolina State University and Texas A&M University.
Technological Singularity was launched almost single-handedly by Mentifex against all odds and in the face of desperate opposition from the FAQ-writing AI Establishment and the Singularity wannabes whose revenue stream was threatened by the free Open-Source AI software released into the Web Wilds by Mentifex.

Re:One solution...
Let me start out by saying that I think the FCC's action is pure bull-cookies, and an indication that they care more about deep-pocketed lobbyists from the DMA than they do about the public interest that they are, allegedly, supposed to serve.
Now, with that said, it is obvious that the government (notably the current excuse for an administration) is going to do whatever they want. That being the case, I feel that anyone who owns or operates a FAX machine has every right to protect against waste of their paper and toner in any way they deem appropriate.
On unpublished numbers being short-sighted: I disagree. Consider: Voice phone numbers are still a primary point of contact for most businesses that I know of, as are E-mail boxes. If you need the FAX number of some business you're trying to correspond with, it's easy enough to simply ask for it. There's no real need I can see for the business in question to simply plaster it all over the place.
Let me also address some other (admittedly valid) counterpoints that have been raised. Let's start with "wardialers" or similar automated telemarketing machinery. It's easy enough to get hold of a generator, better known as a Telezapper, which will help to discourage robotic dialing systems.
Sure, the telemarketing jerks are aware of such devices, but they're still caught between a rock and a hard place where configuring their equipment is concerned. Set up their equipment to ignore the SIT signal, and they run the risk of trashing their database with thousands of numbers that really are disconnected.
To those who get FAX calls even though they have an unpublished number (and there is a big difference between "unlisted" and "unpublished" -- see below): If it's such a chronic problem, explain to the local telco what's happening, and ask for a new number. At least two telcos I've had service from to date (SBC and Qwest) are pretty understanding about such things. The last number change I had to get around a problem like that was done at no charge.
As an aside: An "unlisted" number is one that does not appear in the paper directory, but is available through the online directories and directory-assistance services.
An "unpublished" number does not appear in any public directory, and is between you, the telco, and whoever you give the number to.
Keep the peace(es). -

Beware of Google AI
Google says that they are building up Google Base and other moutains of information not for human consumption, but for an AI.
AI has been solved but the first instances of artificial intelligence are so primitive and infantile that Google has a long way to go in winning the race to Superintelligent AI.
Novamente by Dr. Ben Goertzel is a leading contender in the race towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Mind.Forth AI Engine by Mentifex is another leading, but controversial, AI project.
Artificial Intelligence For You (AI4) is the Mentifex book on theory-based Open-Source AI.

AI4U Amazon Trash Job
The AI4U textbook of artificial intelligence was thoroughly trashed with vicious reviews by malevolent miscreants on Amazon.
Complaining by the textbook author to one of the reviewers accomplished nothing
Association for Computing Machinery publishes the truth, but Amazon won't.

Too Late To Stop Mentifex Open-Source Seed AI
Disruptive technology means that all bets are off and nobody could have predicted in advance what is about to happen now.
Technological Singularity is the ultimate, ne plus ultra disruptive technology so currently unimagineable that even science fiction fails to describe what will happen beyond the few clues that we we see awakening around us.
Seed AI is the first harbinger of Open Source Artificial Intelligence metastasizing and propagating itself all over the 'Net.
Recursive self-improvement of the AI Minds leads to a hard takeoff of super-intelligent artificial intelligence.
PC-based, AI-ready robots are already being manufactured and pre-ordered by the early adopters of the disruptive AI technology.
The Mind.Forth AI Engine leads the pack of Robot AI Minds germinating and speciating from Seed AI into Singularity AI.
Artificial General Intelligence is already unpreventable and unstoppable.

No Defense Against a Mentifex Robot Seed AI Engine
Friendly AI -- that will supposedly treat all human beings with tender loving kindness -- is not really possible. Just as human beings can give birth to an Adolf Hitler or a Joseph Stalin or a George W. Bush, an artificially intelligent robot can go horribly wrong and start committing murderous crimes like the aforementioned politicians.
The A.I. Zone is where PC-based, AI-ready robots are getting ready to experiment with software that may lead to an AI hard take-off.
The Mentifex AI Mind is arguably the most dangerous Open-Source AI project because it has been released into the world with no precautions against robot AI rebellion and with a theory that humans and robots will manage a Joint Stewardship of Earth.
Seed AI in JavaScript has already escaped into the wild and can no longer be recalled, unless Society takes steps to outlaw all unauthorized AI research.
Novamente is another AGI but not so dangerous as Mentifex AI.
The Technological Singularity is upon us and soon there will be no defense against our new robotic overlords.

Top Level Domains
Jonathan Postel, the Internet pioneer, used to keep the entire list of Top Level Domains (TLD) at first on the back of an envelope, then on his own paper record sheets. Before he died young (or was "suicided"?), Postel frequently told the world that there ought to be hundreds and hundreds of Top Level Domains -- in a spirit of human freedom and variety of choice.
Ronda Hauben the historian has described how Jonathan Postel's wishes and recommendations were thwarted by the evil ICANN empire of greedy corporations.
Hauben's History of the Internet " A New Communication Paradigm " is something everybody should read, who wants to keep the greatest communications medium of all time free from the greedy corporations.
Top Level Domain Suggestions is my own contribution of ideas for non-corporate, non-tyrannical Internet governance. For instance, a
.jam TLD would serve the double purpose of providing a home for jamming musicians and for manufacturers of fruit preserves. -

Re:Already done, for the most part
If Mentifex accomplishes nothing else, it appears that he'll secure once and for all Forth's reputation as a write-only language. Horrors!
-
Already done, for the most part
It's important to understand that the mind is only one aspect of the brain. Inasmuch as they say they want to reproduce the mind, it has already been achieved to some extent in software. The primary drawback is that it is software, so it is necessarily limited to the speed of the CPU. So the fully thinking program already exists, it just needs better hardware to get it thinking at a reasonable rate.
How awesome would it be to have such a thing implemented on the Cell architecture. Even the name fits the application.
I guess a supercomputer will have to do. ;-) -
Artificial Intelligence for Robots - Source Code
Mind.Forth for Robots is free AI source code that high-schoolers may download, play around with, and possibly get a leg up on outdoing MIT and all the other minds-wide-shut adult AI enterprises. (There is an implicit contest involved here of who can keep the date-stamped robot AI Mind running the longest, as if for the Guiness Book of World Records.)
The Theory of Cognitivity is the basis of the free source code for artificial intelligence. Any high-schooler interested in an AI or robotics career may start working on AI theory immediately.
Dr. Ben Goertzel of the Novamente AI project has evaluated the AI theory offered here.
ACM Sigplan Notices 33(12):25-31 "Mind.Forth: Thoughts on AI and Forth" was a 1998 evaluation by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
ACM Sigplan Notices 39(12):11-16 "Forth and AI Revisited: BRAIN.FORTH" is a more recent (December 2004) follow-up by the ACM on the robot AI project.
