Soulseek is quite simply the only way to download music... in 7 years of using it, I can count the number of times I've been unable to find a tune/album on both hands. Plus the interface, while very basic, makes it easy to download a single track or an entire folder off of someone.

I guess you have tried Soulseek? There is a linux (nicotine) and an OS X client (ssX) availible. I have found it to be the best place by far to look for obscure music. You might have to give the search some time though (days) since the user who has the music you want has to be online for it to show up.

And Gemm is a good, although sometimes a bit expensive, place to find second hand Lps and Cds.

Everyone here seems to be defending Limewire, when the fact remains that although I sincerely doubt they encourage copywrite infringement, they certainly do facilitate it. I feel that I can confidently say that 99% of Limewires usage is to distribute copy-written material. That said, is everyone defending it on principle -- that principle being a sincere dislike for the RIAA -- or is it just fun to play ignorant?

"What?!?! Downloading copy-written material, who the hell does that on Limewire!? Certainly not me!"

I'll admitt, I'm not innocent, but I wont play dumb either.

The US government should stay the hell out of the way; the whole POINT of a .xxx domain is that it would (in theory) differentiate pornographic content from the rest of the web so it would be easy to identify AND block! The idea that it would create an "online red-light district" is absurd: people wouldn't be able to just type in ".xxx" and get access to all the pornography they wanted (though if they wanted that, all they need to do is turn off SafeSearch in Google or use a file sharing application).

Don't they have better things to focus on? (/me avoids the obvious flamebait by not mentioning liberation ;^)

I live in a small town in the midwest. Let's just say the music we get from our local radio stations and television is quite a bit less than diverse. Sure, we have MTV and VH1, but corporate crap music isn't too appealing.

I started listening to online radio stations. I started at Launch. It was awesome. I could find new music, rate what I wanted to hear, and find new and exciting bands and artists I would have never of experienced. Launch only had a select few songs and videos by each artist. I bought several CDs by the artists I found.

File sharing also had a part in broadening my musical taste. For a while, I used Soulseek. I'd search for artists that I liked, then browsed the directories of people who had those artists to find more songs I'd like. I found some great stuff with that method. Again, I often bought more CDs. MP3 are nice for a while, but a CD is something I can show off. Burnt CDs have crap audio and just look and feel tacky.

As I said, the musical diversity around here is not wide. To get CDs by these new artists I found, I had to also look online. Amazon delivers with a huge selection and low prices. They've also got a feature to recommend more music based on ratings. I've found several more CDs this way.

Oh, and last on my distant-future wishlist: A financial-incentive packet bartering priority boost. I.e., anyone can download, but if you contribute money to the authors of the content you're downloading (this would require a centralized server, no way around it), you get a faster download rate. The more you contribute, the faster your downloads go; your donation distribution could be handled automatically.

This is done by Soulseek and is the reason why I believe them to be doomed in the long run. Soulseek, while not perfect, is an extremely nice music p2p app that allows for the downloading of complete albums (as long as people organize their albums into seperate folders, which most soulseek users do), mostly at high bitrates. Literally most any music you might want can be found on slsk, but lines to download are often 30-1000 users long. Nothing leaving the program on overnight won't fix, but for a non-recurring donation of $5, you will be added to a list of "privelaged users" who jump ahead of any non-donators in line. this makes it possible to download an absolutely obscene amount of good (i.e. not commercial) music in short order. But it also means that soulseek is profiting in a very real sense off of copyright infringement. I don't know where they are located, and doubt that it's the USA, but no matter where they are I'm sure that as soon as they hit a critical mass, they'll be doomed to litigation hell. Maybe I shouldn't post this. oh well.

(disclaimer: even though it might seem so, I have no affiliation with soulseek or its developers. I just like the software.)

There used to be a Kazaa Lite version that didn't have all the crap in it but it seems hard to find these days. You could try Soulseek it's totally spyware/adware free and pretty decent.

Soulseek has features for "taste-matching" and such things, allowing you to get recommendations based on other with similar taste. I spend some time there.

But I also quite often head over to Musicplasma when I want to explore new music. There I can get some new interesting names based on bands I already know and then use a regular P2P service find it.

That means they are throttling the port kazaa uses. Try a program like http-tunnel so that you can send the traffic through port 80, which is probably not throttled. Also, i don't know how anyone can find anything on Kazaa anymore (unless you're looking for top 40 stuff) My gf still uses it and rarely has success in downloading songs; most of the ones that do download are corrupted. Kazaa is just a huge pot of scammers and viruses now. Use Soulseek.
