Re:Still Overpriced?
Depends on how you value form-factor. The HP is about 10% or so larger by volume and priced very similarly when spec'd closely. You have to go up from the base processor on the HP and the monitors aren't quite the same res. The video card is an ATI vs the nVidia in the Apple, but at least it is discrete (I think).
But mainly, to get even 6 hours out of the HP you have to spend $100 on this big ugly thing that sticks out of the bottom of the computer. I mean... look at this abomination.
:)They also ship it with the crappy home edition of Windows... there goes another $100 upgrade. And you want a recovery CD? That's another $19.00.
So yeah, you can save $200 on the HP and it is a perfectly nice laptop... but it is correspondingly bigger and - with the competitive battery - heavier.

Re:I'm sure the ...
Did you know that the foam on Columbia's tank ramps was the old CFC foam, not the new stuff? A little digging revealed the truth.
There are a lot of conservative sites such as Fox and News Max with stories about how the wacko environmentalist foam shot the shuttle down. They seem to have the goal of blaming the disaster on environmentalists. They're just flat out lying.
The truth is that the foam responsible was the old stuff. I didn't know that before, but now I do.
The official accident report says on page 51 -
"BX-250, a polyurethane foam applied with CFC-11 chlorofluorocarbon, was used on domes, ramps, and areas where the foam is applied by hand."

Re:interesting but it's not really true
I'm still trying to figure out why the Apollo formula of contractors with Nasa oversight doesn't seem to work anymore.
Take a look at Chapter 5 of the CAIB Report. You might be especially interested in Section 5.3 - "An Agency Trying To Do Too Much With Too Little." And since you're comparing Apollo era NASA with today's program, look at diagrams 5.3-1 and 5.3-3. In short, the Apollo program enjoyed considerably more funding. -

Re:America: Wake the fuck up!
The biggest problem with people is that they suck at math.
Sharks kill more people than terrorists do. Cars kill tens of times more people than terrorists do. Smoking kills hundreds of times more people than terrorists do. Cancer and heart desease kill thousands of times more people than terrorists do. But THEY do not show those dead people on TV, and so YOU believe that those deaths do not happen.
Please, check out this anti-Bush ad to see exactly what I am talking about.
Free your mind. Learn the math. Fight the Matrix. -

With only one click of your thumb you can now press 3 keys at the same time. Imagine the performance boost. Imagine Billy boy launching his nukes with this - oops! there went Europe as well
:)
Seriously, a keyboard is a good idea, but only when you can fit in something at least close to the standard layout and atleast close to the size which makes it possible to press only the correct button. Like in the Nokia 9210. -
Re:crazy iMac placementGood points, though, it was actually a commercial for a PowerBook G4 Titanium... and, the head of the TV studio was using a G4 Cube. There were a good number of other Apple product placements in the movie, which is good, because Apple's systems are actually visually appealing, which on the whole I have yet to see from any other computer manufacturer. I still have not figured out why 99% of computer manufacturers think computing should be *ugly.*
Sony comes close to looking good, until you realize the MX model (shown) starts at $2700. The other Sony computers are just the standard "beige-with-color-tints" which are popular with PC manufacturers now -- their half-effort imitation of Apple's first iMac.
I did find it a little strange in Showtime that they looped the PowerBook G4 ad on that TV set about three or four times, though.

Re:not completely protection-free
Either you were lied to, or the specs have changed. This says that it's a "40 GB IDE Ultra DMA drive", and that you can "Burn custom CDs (CDDA and MP3)with the built-in CD-writer". (On the second page. Under "Internal Storage Drive" and "Music Library" respectively.) The internal HD is standard, and you can export tracks to a CD as either MP3s or in the Redbook standard.

Annoying vs. okayWell, CNET's big ads in the middle of columns suck ass, but the NY Times' "skyscraper" ads on the right are okay. My rule of thumb:
1. Always select "printable" to ease readability
2. Always select "single-page format" to reduce necessary clicks (and artificial pageviews)
