And doing so is harmful. At some point, children SHOULD be exposed to harmful ideas: pornography, racism, loonie religious beliefs, and other horrible things. You probably don't want to expose them to all of it by age six, but you need to teach your kids, "these things are bad because of this, here is how you should deal with them when you encounter them."

If you don't expose your children to these things in a controlled fashion, their reaction on first meeting will be like a kid playing with fire: "ooooh... bright and colorful!" And then the kid gets burnt. Of course, with some things, it takes a few months to figure out what level of trouble they're in, rather than the fast feedback from a match.

Of course, if you do expose the kid to bad ideas, it is almost certain that they will do something stupid at some point. You do reduce the odds of their living as an angel from cradle-to-grave. But if you raise the kid in a "clean-room" environment, any first slip is much more likely to be large, radical, and permanently life-altering. And remember, "kills them outright" is a form of altering their life.

Kids need to be educated to make moral choices. The only way to be sure you've educated them is to expose them to moral choices while you still have some hope of offering guidance. God allows the existance of evil-- ever think maybe this is the reason?

Nah, it's not overkill.

We've got web servers that routinely push >700mbps of traffic. We keep them load balanced to never go above 800mbps, but in the "lab" I've had max output as high as 950mbps.

Granted, with current CPU speeds, we're getting near 100% cpu utilization at those rates anyway. But, I haven't tried this on any of our new dual 3.2Ghz systems, which I'm guessing could handle full wire speed without choking the CPU at the same time.

"But wait," I hear you saying, "drives can't keep up with that!" Well, no, one drive can't. But we have RAID, and a very high cache hit rate. When a new video is posted to the front page(not safe for work at all), the same handful of videos account for 99% of the bandwidth from our video download servers. If we've balanced things correctly, the disks hardly get touched. The only limitation on download speed is the most congested link between you and us.

I'm not saying right now that we'd use 10Gb, but I can see it coming in handy soon. The day we start having to buy extra servers just because we're hitting the limit of gigabit ethernet is the day we'd probably invest in 10Gb gear.

That's why we have things like NetNanny and the V-Chip; ratings for TV, movies and video games; and "Click if you're over 18" buttons on web pages. It's all to allow the consumer to make an informed decision about the content that they choose to view and that they choose to make viewable to their children.

1) We've got no problem with PHP on a pretty high traffic porn site. Turck_mmcache helps quite a bit by caching the pseudo-compiled bytecode of each script, so it's pretty blazing.

Basically every page is dynamically generated, even the images go through a PHP script to make sure the right people are seeing the right images.

We honestly have a bigger problem with the SQL server keeping up than PHP consuming too much CPU. The site listed in my home page URL here runs on 3 servers, one for MySQL, one for most PHP scripts, and one to serve all the images. The two httpd servers handle about 1200 requests per second, and the loads are pretty low. 95% of those requests are PHP scripts.

2) For the site I'm talking about there, we've got anywhere from 1000 to 5000 people browsing the site at once. Another site I admin(very NSFW) gets much more traffic than that, and a lot of those visitors are downloading 5-200MB movies for free. There we have two thttpd servers handling most of the static files (videos and images). At times there we're in the more-than OC-12 levels of bandwidth, and they handle the load just fine.

How do we make money? Some of our sites are subscription based, and we try to have content that you can't get anywhere else. We try to drive the community aspect of our sites, and try not to just be "another generic porn site".

The first site lets anyone browse for free as much as they want, you just get access to more content if you pay. You also get to talk to the "performers" and a few other perks. The second site I mentioned is all free, it's supported by ads though.

Your writing style reminds me on stileproject

The real problem you're discussing is one that has been noted many times: the internet kills anything successful.

Basically, the promise of the net is everyone's a publisher, and can make something kewl, and show it to everyone.

The problem is if they do a good job of it, they get popular. Bandwidth bills go up. They can no longer afford the site, because banner ads don't get you shit. Unless you're a lowest common denominator genius like stile (but there's only one stile).

So, they either die, get bailed out by a benevolent donor, or get bought by someone who cares about all the page hits.

So slashdot purely existing as a "great tech news site" was not a long term option. Because being great means being attracting attention, and attraction attention costs YOU money on the net, not your consumers. This inversion is not necessarily the panacea it was thought to be 10 years ago.

Personally, I'm quite content to go on loving to hate slashdot for the forseeable future. Gives us gov't workers something to bitch about at coffee break.
