Re: The reason is that it sucks.
That is the problem. Users with a mega multi-monitor 4K displays would need the same resolution on their VR googles to be happy:

A quick image search would show many more examples. Then the headsets are still a bit heavy.

Re:Crybabies
Restore points are based on file extensions on the Monitored File Extensions list. If by some software problem the wrong files were in that list, documents could technically be affected by an upgrade (since I believe a restore point is always created before an upgrade). No idea if that's the case here, just saying it's possible. More info.

Re:It isn't ready for Notebooks even
"Literally nothing you've just said makes any sense at all."
I don't expect 7-digit UIDs to know how to use a computer, either.
Let alone look through Google's support pages and see that my Chrome problem has been in existence since 2009 (Here's a more thorough one from 2012 found on SuperUser - https://superuser.com/question...) Or hell, just my Own Fucking Screenshot From YESTERDAY Demonstrates the same goddamned thing.
So with that first part down, do you want me to continue proving you wrong, or would you rather admit fault and walk away? Camfrog is next, and I'm making that one a VIDEO demonstration so I can really embarrass your ass if you wish to keep on.

right.. it's called vm_stat, and sar was removed from MacOS since sierra but there's still the official Apple repository for sar:
https://opensource.apple.com/s...
Download sar.c, sar.h and also sadc.h and sadc.c from a sibling folder.Compile and test:
clang sar.c -o sar -I .
clang sadc.c -o sadc -I . -framework Foundation -framework IOKit ./sar -A -f test > testout
terminated by signal SIGFPE (Floating point exception)And output, testout looks like this:

Re:Slow news day?
I take it Index Generator isn't the right tool to correct a PDF whose PDF numbering does not match the text's numbering (where the index is already created and part of the book)? If not, can you recommend a tool that will fix a PDF's page numbers based on user instructions? (I mean by changing the metadata, not by overwriting the glyphs on each page.)
Edit: I did a search just before posting this question, and found some solutions which may be useful to others with incorrect page labels on their PDFs: https://superuser.com/question...

Re:2.4GhzIf you accidentally replied AC, here is your reply.
I was reacting to your statement, "The thing we have to remember is we cook food with this wavelength all that differs is the wattage and time it takes to do the cooking. Yikes!", which implies that using WiFi rather than wired network connections in a school might put children at risk.
So, you're not swayed by reason, you're swayed by emotion, like all the others here that read the one sentence I wrote to try to humanise my post.
If this risk is not the result of heating from radiated microwave energy, which you also imply in the same sentence, what would be the mechanism of damage that concerns you?
Wavelength harmonics and resonances breaking strands of mDNA.
My point was that power drops off so quickly with distance from the source, that at any reasonable distance from the transmitter the power from a 30 dBm / 1W source is going to be negligible.
Did you actually read my post before your emotive reply? The answer is there: Damage to mitochondrial DNA in the eggs of girls, who are born with their entire inventory of eggs, occurs as low as 10 Gy according to some of the papers.
With respect to the typical output power of wireless routers I intended to type 50 rather than 5 mW, based on a Google search. But it seems that I was mistaken even at that. Repeating the search now consistently yields the result of ~100mW. One of the sources is https://superuser.com/question....
So what? They are on *all the time*. They don't turn on for 2 minutes and off when your browser refreshes. SYN, SYN-ACK ACK millions of times a day. Accumulated damage, constant repeated low power exposures. Why is this so difficult to unserstand?
" the other thing you don't take into account is pulse width, duration and transient pulses"
What effect do you attribute to the modulation scheme with respect to potential for harm?
Transgenic disease in subsequent generations. None of this stuff is hard to understand if you take the time to study it. Stop watching crap.
And why are you concerned in particular with mitochondrial DNA?
It's the germline all the way back to the first human mother. In effect it is the evolving DNA of humanity itself. It's not wise to fuck with it.
Do you believe that it's more sensitive than DNA in the cell nucleus?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Lastly, how long do you think it will be before the effects of microwave radiation on human health will actually be seen? Many cordless phones used in homes since the 1990s also used the 2.4 GHz spectrum. So do microwave ovens and several other devices.
All subsequent generations after the children who have acquired damaged mDNA.
One study found that the power density in the same room as a cordless phone transmitter was higher than that seen in proximity to cellular base stations. (http://www.emfrf.com/2-4-ghz-cordless-phone-radiation-report/)
If we're so arrogant, callous, short sighted and foolish as to not look at the technology we deploy and have an honset look at the biological consequences on the next generation while they are basically defenseless then not only are we fucked as a species, we deserve it.
Don't you think we'd know by now as a result of all these low-level exposures most of us have been subject to for at least the last ~25 years?
How long was smoking considered harmless and how long did it take for an industry whose product, when used as directed, kills you? How long did they protect their revenue stre

Re:Much easier alternative
That's the difference between Apple and MS. If you have MSDN Universal you can get old versions of Windows.
Admittedly MSDN Universal costs a tonne of cash and you're only supposed to use the old versions for testing.
MS used to provide digital downloads of old versions via Digital River but they killed that service off when 8 came out and people were using it to get 7
https://answers.microsoft.com/...
Unfortunately Microsoft suffer from Apple envy and have a tendency to copy the things Apple do, usually in a way that makes Windows a less desirable platform.
One example would be not patching old OSs to run on new CPUs and requiring new CPUs for new OSs. I.e. in a very Apple like way they're trying to tie a new OS to new hardware and old OSs to the old hardware.

Re:Input latency
A few years back, John Carmack tweeted that he could ping transatlantic faster than putting a pixel on screen. He then explained more fully at superuser.
Since I run smokeping from my home server, I can definitely say that most online services are reachable from my home internet connection in ~20 ms round-trip - or 10 ms one-way.
For contrast, one frame at 30 FPS is 33 ms. (Kind of slow by modern standards, but I'm old enough for 30 FPS to be the threshold of being acceptable).
While it certainly matters to the experience, 2-3 frames of latency between my input and rendered pixels doesn't detract from the experience -- especially for games played with a gamepad (instead of a mouse).
It might not be suitable if you're playing an FPS game professionally, but it's fine for RPG and strategy games.

I still use it
I wanted to use LibreOffice, but couldn't. Having already lots of Excel spreasheets filled with information and formulas, I needed something compatible. Opening the
.xls files with LO (Libre Office) would break the formulas because there's a function incompatibility (Indirect's syntax), where OpenOffice would open them just fine.
Actually the incompatibility is this one:
https://superuser.com/question...Why would they do that?? Can't understand. Even if there were a simple solution, I already have lots of macros written for OO and adapting them to LO would be a total waste of time.
I'm not that sure about LO, STABLE software is really appreciated and OO is just fine. We need stuff that works fine for years, so we can get stuff done.

Not at all standard
Moreover, USB3 ports are blue
Years of Mac USB-3 ports have never been blue, in fact I don't know I've even seen a computer where it was color coded. Maybe in the early days of USB 3.0 some PC's came that way... they do not now.
There are oodles of PC's at best buy with non-blue USB-3 ports. Must be yet another part of the USB "standard" that everyone ignores.
By contrast, let's take a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
And the USB-A to HDMI adaptors work more constantly? Nope. Most require USB3.0 and since you can't tell that from looking at the port generally...
That's a far cry from "my external drive is only moving data at 45MB/sec instead of 85MB/sec", because that's not "technically work[ing]", that's
"actually working".Hmm... have you *used* USB2.0 and USB 3.0 drives? You are really comparing 30MB/s (real transfer speeds factoring in USB overhead) to USB 3.0 and 3.1 realistic speeds of 500MB/s and 1GB/s respectively...
It's not "actually working" if you have a TB or more of data to transfer and you end up on USB 2.0. It's "technically infeasible" as would be printing it all out on paper and typing it in elsewhere, even though that would be "technically working" also.

Re:So... it's Chrome then?
Well I'll grant, those safebrowsing lines certainly do make me uneasy. A little searching led me to this. According to... that dude, whoever he is, the browser is downloading a blocklist which it checks offline. So checking offline is good, but that does give Google your IP and, according to a linked post, a cookie which uniquely identifies you.
So, I dunno. I wonder about the value of those blocklists, I'm not sure I've ever encountered a blocked site. -
Re:Was the font available in 2006?
A pretty good case was made here that it was, in fact, available as early as 2005 and became part of Windows Vista in 2006, in addition to rolling out with Office 2007.

No, fuck Windows update.
I turn off Windows update on the boxes that I still have. I recommend everyone I know disable Windows update on all boxes that they have.
If you leave Windows update on, and just take the security updates by default, you will get owned by Microsoft. Constant telemetry will stream from your box.
I also recommend people look up how to stop this on Windows 7 and 8, where it is possible to stop it. It is not possible in 10, though some people have had some success at limiting it.
The article's advice is horseshit. WU should be disabled for personal computers if privacy is any manner of concern. Microsoft has revectored their security update mechanism to: try to upgrade you to Windows 10. Install sleeper services that only months after installation began transmitting telemetry. Remove useful names from KBs to prevent successful system administration. Transmit information about what programs you use, when you use them, how often you use them. Transmit information regarding crashes. Broadly expose envelope information about your non-Microsoft related activities to Microsoft and anyone they choose to share that information with.
Disable WU on 7 and 8. Tear out the bad patches. Only EVER manually apply patches that you actually require for security and functioinality.
Comparing being a sensible system administrator who doesn't want to transfer control over their personal activities to Microsoft to antivaxxers is disgusting. Anyone making this comparison is irresponsible.

The list of KBs that you must manually remove (and prevent reinstallation of) to keep Windows without telemetry is provided on that su post. The list is:

Re: How many Chromebook buys are accidental?
For the benefit of others reading this, I'll summarize the top three results for Google c++ chromebook as of right now>:
- The first result, "C++ Compiler for Chromebook", was a soft redirect to "Compile C/C++ on Chrome OS", which states: "You'll probably need to build it yourself," and links to the article "Building and Testing GCC and GNU binutils". This article in turn appears to be oriented toward developing on a GNU/Linux PC and testing on a Chromebook.
- The second result, "Offline c++ editor and compiler for chromebook", has one reply stating: "No compilers will run under ChromeOS. However, there are a number of very good cloud-based programming/IDE sites that work just fine with Chrome." Use of anything "cloud-based" while riding a school bus or city bus requires a tethering subscription, and in the United States, a tethering subscription for the life of a device is more expensive than a Windows license. Another reply recommends use of developer mode, but that's fragile as I've described elsewhere.
- The third result, "Five Best Online IDE's – Making the switch to a Chromebook", mentions several web-based IDE but doesn't mention their support for offline use. This article in turn linked to "Choosing the Best Chromebook for Developers", which an article about Crouton. But Crouton requires developer mode.
So it's either a remote IDE (which fails while offline) or Crouton (which begs to be wiped). Which search terms did you use to find a third option?
Through other searches, I found Trinket, which surprisingly continued to work after I went offline, made changes to the program with Trinket still open, and ran it. But it doesn't appear to work offline after navigating from Trinket and back to it. (This would require use of a Service Worker.)

On-screen keyboard failures
I don't see how a user could use the on-screen keyboard to authenticate to Windows when the elevation prompt covers up the on-screen keyboard or when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del on the login or lock screen does not cause the password prompt to appear.
Nor does it help if the user replaced a broken mouse at the same time.

Re:"...disabled by default."
Mac: I download something and install it, and then have ZERO IDEA how to uninstall it. Deleting the icon out of "Application" is easy. But what about configuration files? Even homebrew doesn't solve that -- http://superuser.com/questions...
Win32 apps in UWP containers: this "project centennial" approach virtualizes filesystem and registry for the app, so uninstallation will end up removing absolutely everything. I prefer this approach. (speaking as someone with OSX and who knows what leftovers on it...)
Often deleting the icon is sufficient on the Mac. Yes there may be a config file or two left behind in your hidden library folder but often that is inconsequential. Keep in mind that Windows uninstallers often don't completely remove everything either and leave all sorts of cruft behind including config files, registry entries and entire directories full of junk. If a Mac application installation process is fairly complicated, most good developers will also provide an uninstaller or clean utility for you.
The most common sorts of things left behind can be easily found by holding down the option key and clicking on the "Go" menu. There the "Library" folder should be visible. Two places to look are "Application Support" and "Preferences" folders. That will cover 90% of what gets left behind.
Most good developers will keep most things compartmentalized to a single app container icon in your applications folder. A simple drag and drop to the trash in such instances is worlds better than the previous alternative of uninstallers and much closer to a virtualized container you mention. Yes there are more advanced systems these days and it is highly dependent upon the developer playing nice. Still I prefer to keep things simple.

Re:"...disabled by default."
That's no guarantee that Microsoft will be as wise as Apple has been. Instead of code signing, Microsoft is encouraging developers to wrap Win32 apps in UWP containers so they can be published from the Windows Store, so probably not as wise.

If you're really worried about that 4 KB prefs file on your 4 TB drive, then they are as easy to delete as the Application Bundle itself:

Oh, and that took exactly .000025 ns to Google, Hater. -

Re:Sigh
It's a common issue on the web, you need to install two KBs (order matters) (also you might need to kill the updater service for them to install)
KB3020369

More frequent hostnames go near the top
putting each url on separate lines instead of grouping them logically by SLD
Some hosts parsers do not understand more than one hostname per line, though recent Windows supports up to nine.
inconsistent ordering of the bare versions and the www. versions
Ideally, a hosts parser would use a Bloom filter to cache a large file. But because most operating systems instead use a linear scan, more frequently accessed hostnames should go near the top. If you're using it to work around flaky ISP DNS, hostnames you use frequently should go above hostnames you're blocking. Thus the output of a tool that automatically sorts entries by access frequency might look inconsistent in this manner.
