Re:donate money that goes straight to the RIAA?!?
I agree completely. I feel bad for Daniel, but he should be sueing the RIAA for extortion. They call him a theif and start a lawsuit they know they will not win. If he defends, he is broken finantially. If he settles, he pays them for their attack. Now if we contribute money to him, we are also paying the RIAA to sue more students.
The IFPI pulled this same thing in Taiwan (Slashdot's version), and it turned out the same way. When are these highway robbers, these brigands, these privateers, these pirates, going to stop holding a legal gun to our heads to get our money?
If we are the pirates, why are they in possession of all the gold?
In my opinion, the RIAA should be sued for intimidating innocent students. Furthermore, the resulting money should be put into a legal defence fund specifically created to defend unfortunate victims of the RIAA/IFPI's reign of terror.
US residents all live behind the paper curtain. The tyranny of litigation has reached alarming levels.

Re:We're Americans: Let's Stand up for our FreedomA critic writes, " You should watch your potentially racist rhetoric there. It sounds like you are saying that Chinese people are naturally against the idea of freedom. ".
One of the problems with Chinese thinking is that the Chinese consider Americans or, in general, Westerners to be only "Whites" or "Blacks". The Chinese do not consider, say, Vietnamese to be Americans. So, to the Chinese, praising Americans means praising only "Whites" or "Blacks". The Chinese way of thinking is racist. This observation is another reason why Westerners are radically different from non-Westerners like the Chinese. For the record, when we Americans praise Western society, we are praising all the ethnic groups in Western society. Let's stop thinking and acting like the Chinese, okay? This matter is not an issue of race but is an issue of culture.
The critic further writes, " First of all, Taiwan is also populated by Chinese, and they have grown out of an opressive military regime into a fairly well functioning democracy ".
Let's consider the following.
-
The constitution of the Chinese living in Taiwan supports the integration of both Tibet and Mongolia into mainland China. While Tibetans suffer and die at the hands of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Chinese in Taiwan support integrating Tibet into "One China".
-
The Chinese son of the chairman of a powerful conglomerate in Taiwan has joined with the son of Jiang Zemin, the butcher of Tibet, to build an advanced silicon-wafer factory in Shanghai. (reference: "Sons of prominent Chinese team up on chip venture")
-
Senior Chinese military officials retired from the Taiwanese military have gone to mainland China and given military secrets about the American F-16 fighter jet to the Beijing government. (reference: "Sons of prominent Chinese team up on chip venture")
-
The Chinese from "poor, little, scared" Taiwan have invested more than $50 billion into more than 50,000 businesses in mainland China. How did this phenomenon happen? Immediately, after the Tienanman Square incident back in June 4, 1989, the American government and businesses curtailed investments in mainland China. The Taiwanese (and the other Chinese in Hong Kong) seized this window of opportunity and accelerated investments into mainland China. The rate of investments from Taiwan into China has skyrocketed to the present levels; investments continue to grow at double-digit rates.
-
In 1999, the "Wall Street Journal" reported that of all the Chinese arrested and convicted of stealing American military technology to give to Beijing, the majority of these Chinese came from Taiwan. Please read "Crypto Smuggle Scheme Busted" for an example of Chinese (from Taiwan) who were recently arrested for attempting to smuggle American military technology to mainland China.

Even "Geeks" Know the Threats (e. g. China) to USAEven "geeks" know that the world outside of the West is hostile. We need to be prepared to use all methods that are necessary. "All methods" includes dropping nuclear bombs via the "goofy loop", shooting depleted-uranium shells, etc.
Nations outside of the West have no qualms whatsoever in using nuclear force against us. For example, in 1995, the Chinese threatened to drop a nuclear bomb on Los Angeles. Please read "Chinese general told threat against U.S. unacceptable". The Chinese have proactively obtained sensitive information about our military technology and national security. They intend to undermine our society. Please read " Military secrets on sale to China" and "Spy Suspect Led an Active, Prominent Life".
Remember these famous words: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Let us not forget our obligations to our fellow citizens in the West even if we are "geeks".

Chinese Support Invading People's Privacy
I read the full article about the so-called Chinese search engine. It smacks of further government control. The Chinese people have approached the issue of government control in the usual fashion: total lack of ethics. The Chinese have not expressed any concern whatsoever for the moral implications of the government controlling the Internet and its access.
By contrast, look at our American society in the West. We have debated the issue of the government controlling the Internet. We have expressed grave concern over its moral implications. Heck, even the Japanese have publically debated the issue of government control and censorship and expressed grave concerns.
This Chinese behavior with regards to government control of the Internet is consistent with previous Chinese behavior. For example, immediately after the American nation froze or withdrew investments from mainland China just after the Tienanmen incident in 1989, the Chinese from Taiwan and Hong Kong immediately seized this market opportunity and poured billions of dollars of investment into mainland China. As another example, the Chinese on Taiwan use their constitution to declare that Tibet is part of mainland China while the Chinese People's Liberation Army torture and kill Tibetan nuns.
I really wish that people in the West would wake up. We should stop thinking that, somehow, the Chinese people are like us in the West. They are not. They are very different from us. We foolishly extol the Chinese values that we shallowly see among Chinese immigrants in the West.
We should look deeper. The Chinese are over-represented in our engineering and business schools at our elite universities. Yet, the Chinese are under-represented at meetings of Amnesty International at those very same universities. Why?
This observation is consistent with the story about the Chinese search engine. The Chinese will use this search-engine technology to achieve whatever unethical goals that they can envision. The Chinese have no ethics. The Chinese can understand engineering (in this case, software engineering), but they refuse to understand the basic tenets behind Amnesty International.
What follows is some observations, backed by verifiable sources, about the Chinese.
1. Most Chinese in Hong Kong support the return of Hong Kong to mainland China. A CNN/Time survey showed, in fact, that 60% of the Chinese in Hong Kong support the return of Hong Kong to mainland China. (reference: "Poll: Hong Kong residents optimistic" ) While East Timorese fought and died for independence from the oppressive Indonesian government, the Chinese in Hong Kong cheered the mainland Chinese government.

I agree completely - just look at Taiwan vs China
Bill Gates loves to talk about the economic transformation that is happening in China. - "China is just in a league of its own and it's like no one else is paying attention" . I wonder does it bug him that the transformation is happening mostly on pirated software?
As it is happening 92% with pirated software - what does that say about software's role in economic development? Go out and pirate - 75-cent copies of XP and Office for everyone! Perhaps developing countries should mandate piracy?
Bill Gates and Steve Balmer are smart men. Why aren't they and Microsoft forcing the software piracy issue like they have done in Taiwan? Presumably they are not doing it out of goodwill. If they did we would see large write-offs on the donations in the MS Annual Report.
The real driver is that Microsoft wants to get market share to lock-in the market. In ten years time when China is far wealthier their lawyers will come calling - much like they have done in Taiwan. Despite China's "one china" policy - Microsoft obviously has a three-china intellectual property protection policy (HK, Taiwan, & Mainland).
This smacks of illegal dumping. Dump your product on the country to effectively eliminate the chance of any local competition appearing and shut out your competitors. Once the country can afford to pay the $1000 a user MS Office + MS CAL + MS XP fees send in the lawyers. The switching costs at that point will be too high and they will be forced to pay. This is exactly what Microsoft did in Taiwan - supposedly a part of China.
What should developing countries do? Sue Microsoft for dumping. How can the company be held accountable for the actions of other people selling pirated products? In Canada recently, Tobacco Companies were held accountable for allowing smuggled tobacco to be illegally dumped from the US. Microsoft is playing an equally sinister game. It is obvious that Microsoft will in the long gain from piracy in China, much like a company illegally dumping products below cost can profit in the long term.
Software piracy is the number one problem for Linux and Open Source software in developing countries and something must be done about it.

Another government sells outPer an article in the Taipei Times MS will cut prices on 13 of its products by "up to" 54 percent, but that "it remains to be seen whether Microsoft's distributors will pass the price cuts on to consumers." Office XP Pro would "in theory" drop 14%. No mention of Windows. In addition, the code-sharing agreement only stipulates "portions" of Windows' code, and leaves it entirely up to MS to decide who get to see it.
Consumers' groups don't like the decision, which the government is locked into for five years. The deal was done behind closed doors, with all details withheld. And there don't appear to be any penalties for MS if it fails to abide by the terms of the agreement.
Originally, the government had threatened to reopen an anti-trust investigation if MS didn't sit down and bargain, but there has been a lot of speculation -- particularly by the news media, who love to speculate on such things -- that MS had threatened to back out of a research park project if the investigation was re-opened. If true, it appears to mean the government caved first.

Taiwan is not China
Taiwan is an independant country. China has threatened to invade if Taiwan declares independence. China considers Taiwan a "renegade province" and will attempt to take Taiwan back.
Maybe i'm paranoid, but if China is wanting MS's source, it's not for any firewall features, it's to find flaws in the most widely distributed OS in the world. I mean the CIA has already warned of possible Chinese cyber-terrorism against U.S. and Taiwanese computer systems. What better time and way to take over a country than to launch a major cyber-attack against the prey and the defender, while the defender is involved in another war?
I'm personally going to wager that if the US gets into it with Iraq, that China will take that opportunity to try and take Taiwan. I also think that China will probably retaliate against the US if we defend Taiwan. And we will defend Taiwan , or so pledges George Bush. -
punctuated equilibrium>Mind you this "pent up evoloution" really doesn't make sense for non-reducable systems: If evolution is trial and error, then how would evolution know what to queue up?
I believe this has something to do with punctuated equilibrium. I think the latest "trend" in evolutionary theory is that evolution isn't gradual, but occurs in what appears to be bursts. Such bursts are thought to occur as a result of dramatic changes in the environment. Perhaps drastic changes cause "pent up evoluiton" to break out for some members of the species, and survival of the fittest takes it from there. Anyway, that's how I would make sense of this, but I'm no scientist.
I'm not too sure about creationist claims that a "devine creator" makes more sense than evolutionary theory. It's like neural networks. You can describe how neural networks work, but when they do amazing things (like learn to fly) you really can't explain what the heck happened. That doesn't mean you just witnessed devine creation either...

I'd be interested in your source. 31,000+ Taiwanese students were estimated as studying in the US in 1998/1999. This compares with a recent estimate of Taiwanese students in Chinese colleges as "more than 4000". The ratio looks like 7:1 to me. -

TransparencyAccording to the Taipei Times this disk is semi-transparent... and the picture confirms this.
My assumption is that this media is double-sided with higher density than a DVD.
My question is this: Given that the disk is almost clear, and that we have little to no information on the method by which the data is read and written, wouldn't applying any sort of label to the disk have negative adverse effects on the ability of the drive to read its contents?
In addition, when they say "The 100-gigabyte disc is larger than any other similar product in the world," they must surely be speaking of physical size, not capacity, correct?

Microsoft Taiwan charged with price gougingIn related news,.. the Taipei Times is reporting that the Fair Trade Commision in Taiwan is investigating Microsoft for abuse of its monopoly position... the article:
The government has formed a special taskforce to investigate Microsoft over accusations it has abused its software monopoly to manipulate prices, a report said yesterday.
The taskforce established by the Fair Trade Commission will investigate Microsoft for at least six months before taking any action against the US software giant, local media said.According to Taiwan's fair trade law, the head of a company can be jailed for up to three years and fined up to NT$100 million (US$2.89 million) if he is found guilty of abusing the company's market dominance.
On Friday, lawmakers from the PFP charged Microsoft with profiteering in Taiwan by gouging prices for its operating systems.
They also demanded the justice ministry halt a crackdown on pirated computer software, mostly Microsoft products, before the commission completes the investigation.
The ministry Wednesday launched a drive against unauthorized software to safeguard intellectual property rights.

Tactical nukes would hinder China
Tactical nukes would hinder China
By Chiou Chwei-liang ôG
Last month, the Los Angeles Times published an article about a classified document, the Nuclear Posture Review, leaked from the US Department of Defense. The article states that the US is considering a change to its nuclear policies. The change would involve turning large strategic nuclear weapons, which have been obsolete since the end of the Cold War, into smaller tactical nuclear weapons that could be used in the post-Cold War world.
These weapons would be used to attack military command centers, or caves and underground complexes where biological or chemical weapons are stored. The document also clearly states that these nuclear weapons could be used against seven possible nations. Apart from the countries in the "axis of evil" -- North Korea, Iran and Iraq -- they might also be used against China, Russia, Syria and Libya.
The document further identifies three hot spots where war is thought most likely to break out: the Korean Peninsula, following a North Korean invasion of the South; the Middle East, following an Iraqi attack on Israel or other neighbors; and the Taiwan Strait.
The document created a stir from the moment it became public. Liberal US media such as The New York Times clearly stated their strong disagreement with the position the review adopts, which was not surprising. Taiwan has officially chosen to refrain from commenting on the matter.
Surprisingly, however, Minis-ter of National Defense Tang Yao-ming (öÂ`©ú), during a recent interpellation in the legislature, said that Taiwan continues to maintain its "five nos" policy: no to developing, producing, obtaining, storing or using nuclear weapons. He emphasized that a Taiwan Strait free of nuclear arms is Taipei's objective. The Taiwan Strait issue must be solved by peaceful means and the ministry does not wish it to turn into a conflict involving nuclear arms.
Tang also said that he did not want to comment on the report that the US may use nuclear weapons to intervene in a cross-strait conflict since the report came from US media and not through official channels.
Unfortunately, his statements mean that Taiwan opposes the Washington's use of limited tactical nuclear weapons to protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
It is said that this is not the thinking of President Chen Shui-bian (ôó) and his government and that the National Security Council was surprised by Tang's statements. The council reportedly has criticized him indirectly. There are also rumors that the defense ministry will announce a change in its position.
Some American friends of mine have great problems understanding this issue. If China attacks, Taiwan will surely find itself in grave danger. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the US is obliged to come to our aid militarily. The US has regional tactical nuclear weapons that cannot be used to resist the force of the conventional Chinese army, but instead has to engage in a time-consuming and exhausting conventional war in the Taiwan Strait.
If Washington were to play by these rules, it would be demonstrating that the US government had gone mad. Even if Taiwan's forces had been annihilated by China's, we still wouldn't want the Americans to use these tactical nuclear weapons, but would instead want them to come up with some brilliant military maneuver to defeat the invading People's Liberation Aarmy.
Do we want the Americans to suffer the same kind of heavy losses that they suffered in the Vietnam War? If so, then why should the Americans send soldiers to protect us? We want them to save us, but then we also want them to fight a war that is none of their business with their hands tied. Aren't we asking too much?
These questions from my American friends are all good ones, and I don't know how to answer them.
This, of course, is absolutely not what Tang meant. What he was describing was Taiwan's past nuclear-arms policy.
During the Cold War, the US didn't talk about using tactical nuclear weapons in the Taiwan Strait; what they talked about then was nuclear war that would bring total destruction. Under such circumstances, the defense ministry's "five no's" policy was correct.
Times have changed, however, and both the cross-strait and the global strategic situation are completely different. It is inappropriate for the defense minister to make a statement based on an old policy in response to a new strategic situation.
What's more, as my American friends point out, the leadership in Beijing has always bullied the weak and feared the strong. The unequivocal statements in the Nuclear Posture Review that the US may use tactical nuclear weapons in the Taiwan Strait are meant to warn China unequivocally that the US is deadly serious and that it will not shrink from using maximum power in a cross-strait war. China should harbor no illusions about US' willingness to stand up to it, as it did in the Korean War.
Xu Shiquan (\¥@à), director of the Institute for Taiwan
Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (êÀ|ì¾Ç|¥xÆWãs©Ò), recently made a preposterous statement to the effect that a recent series of actions considered anti-Chinese by Bei-jing amounted to serious interference in China's domestic affairs. He added that the US should not forget that China once went to war with the US on the Korean peninsula for similar reasons.
Xu should stop living old dreams. If there were a war in the Taiwan Strait, the US would use the most advanced regional tactical nuclear weapons. Would China still dare go to war then? My American friends believe they wouldn't and I agree with that view.
A few days ago, the leader of Japan's Liberal Party, Ichiro Ozawa, said that the military threat posed by China is constantly increasing, but that Japan is capable of producing 1,000 nuclear warheads on short notice and has the ability to become a major military power.
Strategic experts in Taiwan also believe that, given the threat from China, it is necessary for Taiwan to develop nuclear arms.
From an idealistic perspec-tive, of course, I oppose war in general and nuclear war in particular. From a realistic perspective, however, if the US developed more advanced nuclear weapons that could be restricted to a theater of war, and if China were to invade Taiwan, I would find it difficult to say no to nuclear arms.
I believe that if the US unequivocally adopts the strategy outlined in the Nuclear Posture Review, the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan will diminish.

Chinese Hong Kong Support Beijing Government
Here is yet another example of American naivete. The Chinese in Hong Kong actually support the government in Beijing. 60% of these Chinese in Hong Kong actually support the return of Hong Kong to mainland China. (reference: "Poll: Hong Kong residents optimistic" ) Most Americans have no idea how the Chinese think and act, so most Americans feel that the Chinese in Hong Kong want to be independent of the Beijing government. Wrong! Most Chinese cheered the unification of Hong Kong and mainland China.
Most Chinese support the idea of a national ID card.
We Americans should never -- ever -- publically condemn human-rights abuses committed by Beijing in Hong Kong. We should simply look the other way. We should also immediately cancel the immigration quota of 20,000 that is assigned to Hong Kong. Both Hong Kong and mainland China should have one unified immigration quota of 20,000.
Instead of wasting our time and resources on the Chinese in Hong Kong, we should be helping people who actually support human rights. Our energies should be directed at stopping human rights abuses in, for example, Thailand, Vietnam, Columbia, etc. We should completely ignore what abuses occur in Hong Kong; the Chinese people in Hong Kong have spoken. They cheered the Beijing government as it took over Hong Kong. They fully support Beijing, including its outrageous claims to Tibet.
2. The constitution of the Chinese living in Taiwan supports the integration of both Tibet and Mongolia into mainland China. While Tibetans suffer and die at the hands of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the Chinese in Taiwan support integrating Tibet into "One China".
3. The Chinese son of the chairman of a powerful conglomerate in Taiwan has joined with the son of Jiang Zemin, the butcher of Tibet, to build an advanced silicon-wafer factory in Shanghai. (reference: "Sons of prominent Chinese team up on chip venture")
4. Senior Chinese military officials retired from the Taiwanese military have gone to mainland China and given military secrets about the American F-16 fighter jet to the Beijing government. (reference: "Military secrets on sale to China") In 1999, the "Wall Street Journal" reported that of all the Chinese arrested and convicted of stealing American military technology to give to Beijing, the majority of these Chinese came from Taiwan.
5. Most Chinese, including those living in the United States of America, support the territorial ambitions of mainland China. Most Chinese support integrating Tibet into mainland China. Most Chinese support integrating the Spratleys into mainland China. Most Chinese support integrating the Senkaku islands into mainland China.
6. Most Chinese support Beijing's attempt to use torture and murder to crush the Falun Gong. Indeed, the Beijing government has funded anti-Falun-Gong meetings within the United States itself. These meetings within the United States are attended by the very same Chinese who fight with tooth and nail to stay permanently in the United States of America.
8. These observations are not an exaggeration of any kind. At your university, attend your local meeting of Amnesty International. The engineering and business schools will have plenty of Chinese people, but there will be virtually _NO_ Chinese faces in a meeting of Amnesty International. Chinese (and other Orientals) are over-represented in engineering and business schools, but they are under-represented in meetings of Amnesty International. Why?
So few Americans really know anything about Chinese society. We Americans are kind-hearted and naive. We simply assume that the Chinese are "just like us" and that the Chinese are simply (financially) poorer versions of ourselves. In reality, the Chinese are not like us. They are poor, but they are _NOT_ like us.

Statistic about Asian-Americans Using Internet
Please do not mis-interpret the statistics indicating that Americans of Asian ancestry are most likely to use the Internet. Due to immigration and, specifically, the hordes of Chinese fighting with tooth and nail to enter the United States of America (USA), the bulk of Americans of Asian ancestry are Chinese. They were not born here. They were born overseas.
These Chinese have flooded into engineering and business schools at American universities. So, naturally, they would be more inclined to use the Internet than other "ethnic" groups.
This skew in the statistics should not be taken as a sign of superiority. Specifically, this skew should not be taken as supporting the "model minority" myth.
Whatever positive attribute might be implied by Chinese "superiority" in using the Internet is wiped out many times over by the many other negative attributes. For example, many of you readers are currently college students. Just visit a local meeting of Amnesty International . While your engineering classes are flooded with Chinese, there will be virtually no Chinese faces at the local meeting of Amnesty International. The Chinese excel at engineering concepts like network connectivity but refuse to grasp basic concepts of humanity.
As another example, most of you are familiar with hi-tech Taiwan. The Chinese students in Taiwan consistently outperform American students on tests of mathematics and science. Indeed, the typical Chinese student is more likely to understand and to use the Internet than the typical American student.
Yet, virtually no American student would admire the Nazis. By constrast, the Chinese (from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) have long admired Hitler and his Nazi ideals.
- According to "DPP's Hitler ad creates stir [taipeitimes.com]", Chinese use Hitler to inspire young people in Taiwan.
- "Fascination with Nazis is shameful for Taiwan [taipeitimes.com]" reports on the popularity of Nazism among Chinese in Taiwan.
- "Offending restaurant decor given the axe [taipeitimes.com]" notes that some Chinese use victims of the Jewish holocaust to entice other Chinese to eat at their restaurant. As the Chinese diners at the restaurant finish their dinners, they calmly enjoy watching the scenes of suffering/dying Jewish people.
- "'Hitler' heater ads draw fire from all quarters [taipeitimes.com]" reports how Chinese use a picture of Hitler to sell a heater in Taiwan.
So, my point is the following. The statistic (in the original SlashDot article) claiming that Americans of Asian ancestry use the Internet at a higher rate than other Americans need not warrant much concern.
