Newflash Mother gets sued by son for doing her job
Let's see every Internet safety class I went to for my son says I have to monitor his Internet usage and then report on it.
When he acts up or misbehaves I have to let him know what he did and use empathy and consequences and how he can correct it to grow up and become a responsible adult that has good behavior, good actions, and makes good decisions and has a good system of morals and ethics. This is also how Critical Thinking works.
But many disagree on how Child Psychology should work and Maddox says don't be a p*ssy beat your kids if she followed the Maddox method he wouldn't even sue her for slander.
The kid is a retard, slander is the spoken word, libel is the written word, I worked for lawyers for four and a half years so I know stuff like that.
If he was my son and did crap like that on Facebook, I'd take away his Internet privileges until he learns his lesson about responsibility and making good decisions instead of bad ones. That would be a consequence of his bad decisions and bad behavior on Facebook and the rest of the Internet. But I'd bet I'd still get sued as the ACLU will claim I violated his rights to troll people on Facebook, Kuro5hin, Slashdot, The Daily Kos, 4Chan, Blogger, Current, Digg, Reddit, etc.

Re:Oh My God, THE Roland Emmerich?!
I Robot is a pretty decent film
Please tell me you're joking. The movie I, Robot may have been okay if it were simply a standalone film, but as an "adaption" of Asimov's book it was a travesty. About the only thing the book had in common with the movie was the title.
While overly satirical and lacking in details, Maddox's review isn't all that far from the mark.

Re:Yeah, he did it right, beginning to end.
Nice, but I find it more satisfying to simply refer back to the formula behind every Garfield strip ever made.

Re:I'm off-duty
It's because they can see in more than 16 colours.
I'm a straight male and the females I know all have TERRIBLE color coordination. Not only that, they seem to not have any heightened acuity for it.
The myth that women see colors better than men is just that - a myth. Women are simply socialized to act as if they give a shit about goldenrod vs canary vs saffron vs paella. There are cases where women DO see more colors (due to a sex-linked trait causing them to have more distinct sets of cones), but this essentially results in a tradeoff between scope and resolution as the raw number of cones is not increased by the trait.
I am thoroughly convinced that women simply are conditioned to think they know about color and the resulting overconfidence results in men thinking "What? That's terrible." or "They're almost exactly the same and it's gonna fucking fade anyway." while only saying "Uh, ok dear".

Re:No Star Wars game will ever compare to TIE FIGH
> not to mention that I personally find "gradual, unknowing descent into evil" a hell of a lot more compelling of a story than "generic coming of age tale"
I still think maddox did a good summary of this 'gradual' change http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/ep3_tot1.gif . I think the change could have been interesting, but they totally screwed it up. You'd think most people would think twice before slaying a whole bunch of children "in exchange for a vague promise about a cure for a potential ailment" for ones wife, but not anakin, nooooo. Gradual my ass.
Slightly more ontopic, why hasn't anyone mentioned X-wing alliance yet? It was pretty awesome.

Re:How about none?
This. You might as well say that a movie version of 2001: A Space Odyssey would be just fine so long as it had a monolith in it. Really? Are your standards so low that having just one element of similarity between the book and the movie is its vindication? (This is not a strawman, I consider my example directly equivalent to 'at least [...] the three laws' as a singular justification.)
If you're too lazy to come up with your own material, you damn well better get the structure of the original right, or nobody will like it. The original is popular and loved for what is, not what some hack director or producer wants it to be. Of course a book has to be adapted to the medium, but any changes beyond the most necessary will be seen usually as detractions, stark flaws sourced in the hubris of somebody too deficient to create anything but a derivative work but too conceited to leave somebody else's work unadulterated. -

This was actually covered when the iPhone was released, and the above post is flat out incorrect in its assertion that "[b]ack in 2007, nothing really compared to the iPhone in terms of overall usability and features."

Re:PC, huh?
The European version of Fallout 3, specifically the one released in the UK and Ireland, had three starting options for race in character customisation
1) Caucasian
2) Asian
3) African AmericanThe minute we started the game, everybody had a good laugh about typical American ignorance. None of us were black, but I'm sure anyone in the UK who was would probably be fairly irritated by that designation. It didn't even stop there. In the UK, "Asian" refers predominantly to people south asian descent, the subcontinent. "East Asian" refers to people of Chinese or surrounding regional descent, this is what Americans refer to as "Asian".
I believe Maddox had something to say on this very topic not so long ago.
To be fair, the whole game takes place in the former United States. Thus, the 'american ignorance' is quite correct to the game itself.

Another STUPID iPhone story!
I had a C64 emulator on my Nokia 3650 in 2003/4! And a Gameboy emulator! And a MAMEmulator!
And all S60 phones from then on had it. And probably tons of other phones. But because it's a stupid iPhone, from its stupid user community, who have never seen or heard anything from outside their reality distortion bubble, it must get a special mentioning!
Khat's next? An article about a SSH client? (Won't work, since the dumb iPhone hasn't even got all the necessary character buttons on its "keyboard" to properly use it.)Oh iPhone. You're really "special". Just like your users are "special"... (Yeah, in that "special" sense. ^^)

I wasn't aware that either side was for the killing of babies. Unless you're Maddox. Re:Do they mean..
"Imagine finding out you got rejected from community college, then finding out that your alcoholic father got arrested for domestic abuse, you lost all your life savings in a Ponzi scheme, and all of this happens to you while you're on the space shuttle Challenger. Then you wake up and it's all a bad dream, except you realize that you're at work without clothes on, and work is NASA and you're really on the space shuttle Challenger. That's what this movie is like, only infinitely worse. Everything about this movie pissed me off, save for the lesbian finger bang scene. Except even that sucked because it wasn't in the movie."

Re:More whining from fashion designers
I mean, people wanted an iPhone for years before Apple release it and it turned the market upside down. If they just put an iPod on a phone or a phone on an iPod nobody would have cared except for a few fanboys. Instead they made a truly innovative device and entered the market when the time was right -- when they had something interesting
They did just put a phone in an ipod touch. And people bitched (correctly) about the lack of 3G, GPS, etc. It took a few generations to get right. See Maddox
A Netbook is old... real old. I remember they were popular concepts in '95... only then they didn't have batteries. Apple put one out way back then, and it flopped. Probably why they haven't put one out lately.
And they put their OS on a tiny underpowered device with less than 800x600 (480x320) screen, and called it a ipod touch. That's their netbook.

Re:Nokia vs Apple
Well, pretty much everyone I know owns either a Nokia, or a SonyEricsson. So there's that. I have yet so see my first iPhone user here in Cologne, Germany.
I once saw one with something that turned out to be a Samsung phone.
There simply are too many features missing in the iPhone, for it to be taken seriously here.
Also, nobody of those I asked about their phone, knew that they were running Symbian. They did not care anyway.Oh, and I noticed that nobody has posted a link to this yet: http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone ^^

Re:To Spoiled Rotten Children: It's only a game!
Remember, If you love you're children BEAT THEM!
You beat them so they won't jump off the roof? I'm not sure that's going to help in this case.
Beatings result in fear and/or anger, that's all. There is no "lesson learned". You might as well say an abusive husband is "teaching" his wife (and they say it, AFAIK).
Someone that lives in fear will fear life. Anger too, doesn't make a healthy mind. The kid might hold a grudge against his parents. It doesn't matter whether the kid will do something against them (and probably won't), but chances are the kid will not trust their parents either.
If a beating is the only thing that will fix the kid, it means the parent have been doing(or, more accurately have been letting the kid do) something wrong.
If a beating is the only thing that will fix the kid, it means the parent have been doing(or, more accurately have been letting the kid do something wrong) something wrong.
Anyway, if people (it doesn't matter the age) intend to kill themselves, I doubt telling them to "suck it up" will solve anything. They are way past the level of having only immature behavior.
-
To Spoiled Rotten Children: It's only a game!
Nothing at all like the Lori Drew Incident that confirms that MySpace is more Train Wreck than Social Network, a spoiled little brat has to ruin it for everybody else because he doesn't want to be disciplined. Another thing to consider is if his dad was some high ranking bureaucrat trying to "save the children from the evils of sex and violence".
The court hasn't though about the children and the adults who know it is just a game.
So your dad grounded you from video games. SUCK IT UP! Do your punishment and get it over with. Unless your dad caught you going to some illegal gambling website (which I doubt any 12 y.o. would be doing) or going to one of the nefarious websites that have numbers that are unnecessary and strange suffixes, there is no reason for bratty behavior.
So you are banned from World of Warcraft for a week. Is killing yourself in real life going to resolve anything?
Thailand may think they may have people's best interest at heart but it is foolish to make a federal case out of an incident where parents must be accounable for their children's actions, not the government. Unless the kid steals a PS3 from a shop, mom and dad need to increase their discipline.
Remember, If you love you're children BEAT THEM! -

Re:Nokia N810
Yes, but it just does not have the same je nais se qua as the iPhone. For some people, being more productive isn't enough. They have to have the only phone that matters.
When Nokia starts having billboards on the sides of buses with silhouettes of hip-looking young people dancing, then we can talk.
