Re:Hmmmmm; Math please
And yet, inspite of such math, it is happening. Not just in Denver but other places. In fact, I would not be surprised to see Colorado work at creating a strain of pine that can withstand the pine beetle and a drought. Once that happens, we will probably fill in all the kill area in our forests.

Re:Republicans! You need to get out more.
It has happened to innocent people over the last 5 years. Jose Padilla (held without charge for over three years, finally indicted over the objection of the government, not yet tried), Khaled el-Masri (arrested in the Balkans, transported around the secret prison system, tortured, later released), Maher Arar (Canadian & Syrian citizen arrested while changing planes in the US, deported to Syria and held for a year on US orders); and that's just off the top of my head.
That's also not counting the innocent people being placed on watch lists for no good reason.
In the distant future, when western civilization falls because people didn't want to get their hands dirty fighting to save it, who will speak out?
Puh-leaze. Are you listening to yourself? You're just reaching for stupid hyperbole because you can't answer my charges, and it's making you sound like an utter tool. Terrorism is not going to cause the end of Western Civilization. Not now, not then, not ever. Western civilization has weathered much, much worse in the last thousand years and not only survived but came out the other side wiser for the experience (go learn about the Thirty Years' War, or the Mongol invasions, or the Black Death sometime). However, your apparent favorite way to combat terrorism is very likely to erode our democracy and our liberty until it exists only in name. That is a real threat to America--but even that would not be the end of Western civilization.
And for the record, I am fighting terrorism. I'm also fighting the creeping authoritarianism that's growing in response to the fear that terrorism has engendered.

Colorado
Colorado, for some people, is the most important state in the country right now. http://www.thedenverchannel.com/politics/9638818/

Re:The bottom line is thisIn the absence of proof, we'll have to assume no causality between USA PATRIOT Act, etc. and the seeming increase in the unwarranted arrest of photographers and the destruction of their property. But I would be interested to see what the pre- and post-9/11 numbers of "unwarraned arrests of photographers" look like. Do they even keep such a stat?
Maybe it is just the *reporting* of these false arrests that are making more news. If that's the case, then it's a good thing. Maybe it's just because there are more people with cameraphones, security systems, and cameras.
But I'm not convinced. Things like arresting somebody for taking a picture of a power plant, etc., etc. were almost unheard of 5 years ago. Of course, we still have to contend with things like Air Marshals putting random photographers on "suspicious persons" lists and the like. That sort of behavior is not at the local level, and it can be attributed to post-9/11 mindset/laws. This is where I think the connection lies. Local law enforcers see their federal counterparts engaging this activity, and they think they can do it, too. It may be a tenuous connection, but it certainly warrants further evaluation.
So long as the press keeps doing its job and reports incidents like this, I don't see us approaching any type of police state. But we photographers must stand up for our rights!

Re:WTF
Maybe the policy is to prevent these guys from just sleeping all day on their assigned flights.
No, that can't be it. -
Selfishness and unselfishness
7News has a link from that article to another article about air marshals protesting a different set of regulations, one which directly endangers passengers. One air marshal quoted in the article has already lost his job for working within the system to get things fixed. Congress investigated and issued a report that also criticized TSA management. TSA management continues to ignore both Congress and their employees.
Basically, the TSA is preventing air marhals from being anonymous.
I respect the air marshals who are risking unemployment because they see a safety problem. -
Please read the related article.....
There is an article linked to from that page about how horribly mismanaged the Federal Air Marshals Service is.

OT But idiots are just plain stupid
I was watching a police videos show the other day and they had a segment on a copuple of teens who were drving around some town at night with paint ball guns and doing "drive bys" on unsuspecting pedestrians. And to top it all off they were video taping the whole thing and had lots of colourful narrative to go with the action.
This all came to an end with their last victim who they "shot" in full view of a police cruiser (which you actually see on the tape)
Man my jaw dropped. I was astounded at their level of stupidity.
Mind you the Dumb and Dumber bank robbers in Denver made me laugh my ass off as well. Although not in this article, I do remember that they were caught with pictures of themselves in "gansta" poses hlding their "loot" -
Re:Here's my entry
Firefox? The particular application I have open at this very moment? Perhaps uninterestingly, I have exactly 17 tabs open right now, with no (noticeable) adverse consequenses. 18, if you don't include opening the parent link, of course. I am a somewhat-regular user of fark.com (not sure if I should admit that) which, by its nature, allows itself to opening MANY pages at once. If you would prefer, I can list every link I have open at this exact moment, for reference:

d etail.html"I got a chuckle out of putting a clock up in the window and having the hands of the clock display the right time (it actually started out 3 minutes slow, but then gained a minute a day, until it was 4 minutes fast, and then reset itself) -- again, all computer trickery!" Komarnitsky said on his Web site Monday.
The Lafayette man said he accomplished the trickery by taking 12 "base" photographs of the house with lights on and off and then constructed a Web page that appeared to show lights going on and off when the Web visitor clicked, but after performing web server stress testing, he replaced the test images with real-time camera generated images for the holiday season.
Not everything on the internet is a forgery.

Touche!
Well, if we're also going to take the first amendment literally, then you also have to consider the part that says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". We seem to have forgotten that second part in this modern age.
So there, plain as day, the government shall pass no law preventing me from praying to whatever I want, wherever I want. That means I should be able to pray in schools, pray in libraries, have my religious floats in Christmas parades, etc etc. Instead, in 200 years we've managed to turn the amendment around to "freedom from religion", where noone is allowed to practice their religions on public property because someone might be offended... not in the pledge, not on our money, not in our courts, despite the fact that the founding fathers were quite religious (not by-the-book Catholics, but definitely not secular nor atheist), and wove that into the framework of our governmental bodies. -
A Similar OccurrenceSomething similar happened to a Colorado woman last February. She was driving on a rural interstate when her Pontiac accelerated to 100 mph and wouldn't respond to controls. After driving 75 miles toward Denver (while desperately calling for help on her cell phone), the car was slowed to a stop by two police cars that surrounded it front and back and physically "restrained" it.
From an article on the incident here: A mechanic examined the car Monday and said a transmission reverse gear cluster anchor bolt fell out, preventing the car's transmission from moving into another gear. He also found the car was idling at a very high rate, which would cause it to go fast if it were already moving in 5th gear. The Center for Auto Safety previously reported problems with sudden acceleration in Pontiac Sunbirds and other GM "J" cars.

How the F! do you protect birds that might fly into the beam?
A quick google search revealed this page, which answers your question. In fact, it even answers many of the other questions posted here. Check it out! -
Re:Not inteded to be a callus question
Maybe because we don't like forest fires.
Seriously, the twisters don't come every year, Moore just happened to get hit twice within a 4 year period. Lets not forget that the May 3rd tornado was the first F5 rated tornado to EVER hit the OKC area.
Why do people move near the Mississippi river? It seems to flood all the damn time? Why do people live in Flordia? They get hit with hurricaines and probably cost us a lot more to replace than a trailer park.
There isn't a safe place to live, period. You are just fooling yourself if you think that snow is harmless. -
In other news...Wal-Mart is pure evil.
That is all.

Re:This is an opportunity!Unfortunately even with your handle I have to assume you are serious and not just trolling.
Shoulda gone with your gut :-)
Aw man, now I feel bad. Of course, I agree with you 100% in my complete hatred of the religious right. You know, today the state senate here in Colorado was debating a bill where they wanted to 'insert into the bill a praise to the Boy Scouts for standing up to the pressure' regarding exclusion of gays.
I mean, really now - even if their case had merit, is it really necessary to insert gratuitous praise of their exclusion into a bill? And the kicker is, it is MY REPRESENTATIVE SENATOR from Centennial, CO (previously Littleton, CO) who is pushing this crap. I'm gonna send him some dead trees.
