Playing the dumb game is a slippery road, and there are certainly many ways to outdumb the dumb:
1. Get a new hardrive (extra points for a non-standarized interface).
2. Install an obscure OS (GNU-Hurd, BeOS, etc) on a non NTFS partition. Make sure to boot into text mode by default!
3. Install lynx and visit Hotmail and Yahoo.

Assorted thoughts on the Fonera
First at all, it isn't called "La Fonera". "La" in Spanish is just the "The" article, making it the Fonera, a Fonera, or how you want to call it.
It is free too here in Spain, but obtaining it's a really strange scheme that looks a lot like a scam to get private info from people. For example, it was offered for free for the readers of a well known digg-like web and they recommended to use the same user and password to request it as the people had in the web page?! WTF!? And a month later they bought part of the page!!!!
Extremely strange.
And what to say of the Fonera using hidden DNS servers property of the FON makers or scripts allowing free access for them with root privileges to your private network?

I never 'meta' Google product I didn't like
Part of Google's simpicity is that it's contantly evolving and creating itself. I say it rather than them because it's become this thing that all of us are sort of changing.
I've recently been getting into Google Analytics http://tinyurl.com/dc7ts and watching how their site tracking tools are becoming seamlessly integrated with their (or your) ad programs and revenue stream(s). While, still very clunky and lacking a great UI, the potential is obviously great.

Comedy Central is on Notice
I sent this to Comedy Central last night:
"...Here's the cool thing you've just screwed up: your fans picked the very best stuff to share. Not only did they pick the best shows, they edited them down to the best segments. They chose those clips because they were topical, they were funny, and they were worth sharing. If I go to your site, I can watch the shows that you've selected, and they are not the same ones. Nice move.
Next, the YouTube video player works. Your video player? Not so much... Here's why:
1. You have tiny little videos that can't be resized. It's like watching TV from the next room through the keyhole of a closed door.
2. You use javascript to launch a popup window. Therefore, I can't send a link to my friends or put a link on my blog to direct people to the video highlight I want them to see.
3. Your popup window can't be opened in a tab or resized. Give me control of my browser back.
4. Your popup window has an obnoxious background that I'm afraid is going to give me a seizure.
5. Next to your video, there's an ad that's bigger than the video Firefox blocks it, but I can't decide which is worse: the hole that remains in the background, or the background.
6. When I open a YouTube page, the video starts to play. Isn't that cool? On your page, I sit and think about how much you suck while the video buffers. The video plays for about 3 seconds until it over-runs and starts buffering again. ...and that's with DSL. It must be completely useless at slower connection speeds.
7. With YouTube, I can embed the videos in my own website. When I visit a site I'm more likely to watch a video if its right there and I can just push play. You're at least five years away from developing that technology.
8. YouTube's search feature also works, conveniently allowing me to find what I'm looking for. At your site I end up looking through a list of videos..."

Re:10 reasons why the US is hated all over the wor
It's an estimation I made from the fact that the 80 mio Germans suffer 700 deaths each year from fishbone chokes. So I estimated the 300 mio U.S. americans being roughly at the same risk, thus having about 3.75 * 700 = 2625 ~ 2500 victims of the dreaded fish.
The number 700 in turn was taken from "Die Pommes-Panik" (the french fries panic), which dealt with the risk of different food types to your health. There was a food chemist quoted about bovine spongioform encephalitis (BSE, mad cow disease) who said: "Since the discovery of BSE, there were 91 reported deaths worldwide because of a new form of Creutzfeld-Jacobs' disease [the suspected human form of BSE]. There are 700 deaths each year in Germany alone from choking on fishbones."
So even though the number 2500 might be wrong for the U.S., just ask the Census Bureau for other statistics. There have to be hundreds of risks more dangerous than Terrorism. Normal flu for instance kills about 10,000 people each year in Germany.
Lately there was a study published in Great Britain, where hundreds of deaths each year were attributed to understaffing in hospitals because of money saving. -

It's a great idea, but, ah, to have the luxury of that much extra time. Books like this and Web Redesign: Workflow That Works, http://tinyurl.com/y3kajb (Amazon/TinyURL link) that provide good checklists are a godsend for the small shop.
They may not fit your firm's policies and workflow exactly but are better than nothing and cheap compared to the number of hours maintaining a wiki would entail. And they're way better than nothing at all, which is what too many design firms have.

Re:Instead of more drugs...
High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is dangerous stuff indeed. But first, to really understand how dangerous it is you have to understand how the body processes sugar. (information taken from the book 'Good Carb, Better Carb Cookbook' which you can find here http://tinyurl.com/ycuvmx)
Glucose, fructose and galactose can all be absorbed directly by the body--no breaking down at all. They are monosaccharides (one sugar) and they are 'simple sugar'. Glucose is also called 'blood sugar' and it is this that diabetics test for.
Lactose, sucrose and maltose on the other hand are disaccharides (two sugar) and they must be broken down into simple sugars before the body absorbs them.
Glucose + Fructose = Sucrose (Table Sugar)
Glucose + Galactose = Lactose (Milk Sugar)
Glucose + Glucose = Maltose (Malt sugar)
Now, if Fructose can be absorbed by the body directly, why is it so bad? And what is with the 'High Fructose' stuff?
Well remember when I said that the body converts everything into Glucose? It can only do so much of that in a set amount of time. Normally this isn't much of a problem, as natural fruits and vegetables only have a tiny amount of it in them. So you don't have a issue with fructose getting into places where it's not supposed to be, floating around your bloodstream.
You could never eat enough fruits/vegetables to 'overdose' on Fructose in your life. Ever. It's simply not possible to do so, because you would get full before you were anywhere near it. The body was never designed to process that much, because it's not possible in nature.
The other bad thing about it is that the body never feels 'full' on this stuff. Your brain is tuned to stop eating after a certain amount of glucose is pumping through your veins. Fructose--while processed as into glucose--doesn't let this happen.
So you eat and eat and eat--but never get full. Kind of like Barbossa with his Apples. Yar.
THIS IS WHY WE ARE FAT.
The food is sweet (and sweet food is programmed into our brains as good food, because our brains need sugar to be as big as they are) and we never get full. Your body is bombarded with waaaaaay too much sugar, and then you eventually raise your tolerance for sugar so high that your body can never get that high with natural foods alone.
THIS IS WHY DIETS FAIL.
The solution? Limit how many carbs (and sugars) you intake is a start, but more importantly eat GOOD CARBS and minimize the bad ones. I really do recommend the book I linked above. It's less of a cookbook, and more of a instruction guide on what to eat.
Yes, HFCS is very addictive. And it's in so many things, even if you didn't want to eat it you would get some of it. It's in Ketchup. It's in orange juice. It's in soda.
Go ahead. Look at the back of the can of soda your drinking. HFCS is in all of 'em, and along with CS and sometimes even regular sugar sometimes. That's three kinds of sugar in one can. Add it to the fact that it's in everything and you can see how dangerous you can get with this stuff. -

Re:as a hemophiliac
I have the opposite problem from your hemophilia. My blood is too thick and I have lived my life with abnormally narrowed arteries, veins. I had an uncle, when he stopped working, two weeks later he died. As long as he kept working it was forcing his blood through the narrowed blood vessels. I'm not an authority on hemophilia but I have put together a lot of nutrition products that seems to make my narrow blood vessel issue worsen. Right now my rt leg is swollen. The coconut oil seems to be one of the worst "culprits" so since you could use some natural coagulant enhancement you might want to try it. Here's the online sellers > http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/ . The price is very reasonable, about $23.00 for a quart. Coconut oil is PACKED with phytonutrients, which I suspect is why it gums up the blood. I did notice that straight coconut oil made me thirsty... Or you can wait for the pharmaceutical company to dry it, put it in a capsule & sell it to you for another $1,000.00 I guess.
I'm glad you posted. I hadn't really thought of it helping hemophiliacs. I also add some raw (uncooked) oat flakes (cholesterol control), Cream of Wheat (for the IRON), peanut butter, Oxy-Nectar, apple pectin, spirulina and some other lesser ingredients into my mix. Mix all the ingredients DRY, then add the peanut butter, coconut oil, some milk if it's still too dry. Hope you have a strong arm. It gets right stiff.
In the refrigerator the coconut oil cools and sets it up more so that you end up with a very tasty peanut butter tasting cure-for-hemophilia health bar. I also add some thermogenic products to help me lose weight. Some days I eat more than 2 bites and my kidneys start pounding from the pressure required to shove the thick blood through, drum pounding so hard I feel it through my belly button. I'm just telling you there are parameters to the use of this health mix. This is my 2nd batch. The first one didn't have spirulina so the peanut butter raised my appetite. This one is a Keeper. One of the other posters above said that spider webs works as a bleeding patch so what I think is that the proteins & coconut oil phytonutrients is constructing an internal spider web effect right there in the bloodstream. Too much of it would probably put a healthy guy in the morgue. I suppose you could mix it looser with extra water or milk and it would make a great external patch, a "gift from Heaven" as you say. And the other poster can stuff some inside his helmet, and we can petition the auto industry to put some in car air bags.
Anyway, you can get all the health mix products for around or under $50.00 I suppose. Hire a bodybuilder from a nearby Gold's Gym to mix it for you. If it works for you you'll know it within minutes. BUT A WORD OF CAUTION FRIEND. TAKE LESS OF YOUR REGULAR HEMOPHILIAC MEDICINE MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA, or at least stagger the two a minimum 6 hours apart. Old news among poker players
If you read poker forums at all, you'll know that this is a subject that has been beaten to death over and over. So much so in fact that (at least) one poker site's support has a lengthy form letter they send to anyone that complains about "non random" cards:
==================
Firstly, I assure you that our shuffle is entirely random. You can find its description at the first link below, and the results of two independent audits into it at the second:
http://www.pokerstars.com/security.html
http://www.pokerstars.com/rng_audit.html
We will send any real money player's entire hand history to them at any point that they ask for it. We have every real money hand played on our servers and have sent out literally millions of hands. There are many players out there with 100,000 or more hands in their Poker Tracker database. Poker Tracker is a program that allows you to analyse your own play and by extension the randomness of the site in question. If there were anything that deviated from the expected values, these players would have solid evidence to that effect. However, there's nothing on the poker forums. Infact, some players have posted their investigations online, the URLs for which you can find below. I am certain that there are more out there that you can easily find.
http://tinyurl.com/4lfeg
http://tinyurl.com/2nvav
I am sure that many of the players we've sent these hand histories to felt that there were problems with the game. That's the nature of how our brains work. They are very good at picking out patterns, but when faced with randomness, impose patterns of their own on the data. Our brain is also very good at picking out the unusual from the usual. Therefore, you will not take as much notice of the seven times you win your 7/8 shot, but the time you lose it is the time that will stick in your memory.
The nature of poker is that the better a player, the more often he will put his money in when he is ahead. Conversely, the weaker the player, the more often he will put his money in whilst behind. It is therefore natural that the good player will not need to outdrawn his opponent very often, whilst the weaker player has to do it with much greater frequency. Of course, the good player makes more money in the long run, but the weaker player will still win pots from him. It's a fact that in the long run, the good player will outdraw opponents fewer times per hour than he will be outdrawn on himself. This is simply because he is rarely in a situation where he has to outdraw someone to win. However, if you looked at every single time a strong player had a 20% shot to win with all his chips in compared to every single time a weak player had a 20% shot to win, you will find that both players did indeed make their hand 20% of the time.
There are three sets of people who would undoubtably recognise that something was amiss if there were any flaws in the shuffle. The first set is the programmers, the second senior management, and the third the poker specialists (who have access to as many hand histories as they want). All any of these people would have to do is ask for a 100% pay rise with the threat that they will release compelling evidence about the dishonesty. We make our money purely from rake and tournament entry fees. We would immediately lose a lot, if not all of our players as a result of this. The fact that this is not all over the forums, and the fact that I am (sadly) not sitting on a tropical island as I type this mail is a very strong signal that nothing is amiss.
Finally, the offer to send out every real money hand you've played is of course open to you as well. Just let us know and we can send it along. I recommend a tool like Poker Tracker to run your analysis, but there are plenty of other programs out there that do a similiar kind of job.

Re:Jan 2001: Stupid comment
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the dot.com bubble burst start around March/April 2000? I distinctly remember being in college at the time, which narrows down the timeframe considerably since I dropped out at the end of the Spring 2000 semester. Jan 2001 sounds like the right timeframe that the dot.com burst started bleeding over into telecom stocks. YHOO (Yahoo!), for instance, lost about 85% of its value over the course of 2000, and Lucent was down about 75% from its peak by Oct 2000.
So, given that, is Jan 2001 really such a bad time to use as a comparison point?

BREAKING NEWSGames: Playstation 3 launch at risk from giant turtles
Posted by CmdrTaco on Monday September 25, @10:00PM
from the could-things-get-any-worse dept.
An anonymous reader writesOn top of Sony's other problems, analysts are now predicting that the Playstation 3 launch may be at risk of attack by Gamera, a radioactive turtle from beyond the dawn of time. From the article: "If Gamera the giant firebreathing space turtle lands on their offices, they'll bit in quite a bit of trouble too, and that's about as likely to happen." I don't think there's any question at this point that Sony is doomed.
Sony is going to have a lot of trouble withstanding an attack from Gamera, as not only does he possess great destructive power, but he is also a friend to all children. -

Re:I say, "Yes. Yes they should."the individual, rather than the bank, should be held accountable in this scenario.
I don't agree.
The online banking security is too weak if it is based just on a piece of information (username+password). There's already been cases of viruses that do keylogging to gather online banking information for criminals.
The security needs to be based on a combination of something that you know (username+password), plus something you have (e.g. ATM card). No virus can steal your ATM card, and if your wallet gets stolen your PIN code is hopefully unknown to the thief
I've used online banking both in Sweden and in the US.
In the US, the online bank security seems to be about par with Slashdot's. Once someone has your username+password, they can get your money.
In Sweden most (all?) banks don't let you transfer money from your online account with just a username+password. You also need a one-time code for each transfer. These are either generated by a small device, or sent out on credit-card sized cards with ~100 codes. This is a little bit more cumbersome, but it sure feels more safe, especially when using public terminals that may have keyloggers on them.
I mean, seriously, how useful/safe is online banking if you can only use it on your own computer (because of possible keyloggers on public terminals), and even at home you have to make damn sure that you didn't get a keylogging virus through the latest security exploit???

The original research paper states "The proposed fuel-cell system offers applications longevity owing to its more concentrated (up to 10 wt% H2) hydrogen storage than found with H2 stored under common tank pressures or in typical metal hydrides."
Is the storage of liquid hydrogen considered a "common tank pressure"? I wouldn't think so. The big deal about this technology is that it stores the hydrogen in a very safe, room temperature, inert and non-flamable liquid until the instant it passes into the fuel cell. -

On March 21, 2006, an edit appeared, which lasted 7 hours, and the rationale for revert was simply, 'nonsense'. The edit claimed that Phares had past ties to the Guardians of the Cedar, but wasn't sourced. This is a serious allegation, and truly warranted a move to the talk page of the stub.
The Phares talk page does have some interesting ravings on it, which are also unsourced, and less than the truth. It also has a pervasive sense of threat, easily chilling discussion. Maybe this sort of content is why many are unwilling to point to their objective instances of objection, as it tends to further tag them.
For the Record, Royer did publish an article alleging the Phares ties, but it is extremely unlikely that he is in anyway responsible for these edits, as he is serving twenty years for violationg a weapons export ban by running weapons to Pakistan. Royer's statement to the court at his sentencing also expressed both his guilt and remorse. He's a ass, and convicted gun runner, but is probably underserving of his depiction on the talk page, which uses extremely biased hot button terminology.
The two edits on the Phares stub I mentioned here, as well as the latest on the talk page from a user, 'Jihadwatch', all seem to be members of the new classSchema for some wikiContributors, the Single purpose account. (First edit - - revert - - jihadwatch)
As I mentioned earlier, I wish to apply a cluestick to almost everyone involved with editing this article, but I'd prefer an honest reach for the truth instead...
Be angry at the sun for setting
If these things anger you.
Watch the wheel slope and turn,
They are all bound on the wheel,
these people, those warriors.
This republic, Europe, Asia.
Observe them gesticulating,
Observe them going down.
The gang serves lies,
the passionate Man plays his part;
the cold passion for truth
Hunts in no pack.

Re:Show us the article(s)
Sometimes it isn't the high frequency edits that need to be watched out for. I am aware of a wikiStub which is a good example. I proffer this one because of its extreme volatility, I have an axe to grind with proponents of both sides of the issue, have not edited any of the mentioned pages, and I have not made up my mind as to the veracity of the claims.
