So your answer is excuse 421, aka Linux Runs Supercomputers TM. How sad that the same crazy horseshit has come out of FOSSies so damned many times that i can pop up a TM for EVERY excuse? Actually I gave up a nearly $100 an hour job for this one because i got tired of dealing with "multi platform" corporate crapfests where some PHB would see some tits of a salesgal and the next thing we knew we'd have to deal with thousands in shitty hardware or software they'd bought. Oh and really sorry to burst your bubble but...guess what? i'm actually typing on one of those systems now. the customer traded it in for a new triple core and it was such a low power unit I decided to keep it as a nettop. Its a circa 2004 Sempron, 1.5Gb of DDR, 200Gb SATA, and the same install of XP, I just cloned the old 80Gb onto the bigger drive..that's it.

You see THAT is what i find so funny, you'll jump through flaming hoops for your "free" OS but think even the most trivial of common sense, like don't open attachments or don't go to dodgy porn sites, must be too hard. hate to again burst your bubble (no I'm not) but frankly there are more than a dozen free AVs out there and pair ANY of those with any browser other than IE and the machine pretty much takes care of itself. it updates itself, defrags itself, protects itself...tell me, what do you think the odds of you getting even a 5 year old Linux up to current without a single forum hunt or CLI crapfest is? I'd say 0.0%. Hell i can install ANY version of Windows from 2K-Win 7 with nothing but a single disc and a shared folder, that's it. you see THIS is why I can charge so cheap because I get paid by the machine more often than by the hour and i can have 3 or 4 machines being installed and it requires ZERO effort, just pop in the disc, point at the shared folder on first boot, go have a sammich. Hell with Win 7 I even make money while just goofing off as any of my customers can just pop up a "Help me!" on my chat client and i can take over and install their software, walk them through hooking up that new printer, it takes minutes and its $35 a pop and they THANK ME for it.

In the end though the simple fact is the numbers don't lie and the BS you're pushing has been pushed so damned many times they actually have a website dedicated To Linux bullshit and excuses. In fact i can just take the top 20 from that site and cover every excuse and BS about FOSS that has been ever used on this site, sad really.

BTW if you'd like a little more food for thought, what OS was 3 of the 4 CAs running that were compromised not too long ago? take a look and see. Maybe they just had bad configs? Oh I've been saying that since i wrote that article for Linux Insider back in 09 right before the EOL of Win2K, there is a HELL of a big market both in allowing the user to keep their old hardware (because lets face it what XP ran on was actually quite powerful for web surfing and basic office work, here in the shop I'm seeing late model P4s and Pentium Ds along with Athlon X2s, more than powerful enough for most office and home tasks) and in allowing an easy migration path to Linux while letting legacy apps still be used.

The real bitch is the parts are all there but there is too much "We're leet! Do it OUR way!" elitist bullshit and chasing saturated markets like you pointed out for anyone to see the forest for the trees! hell you wouldn't even have to have Win32 support, instead shoot for something like a hardware accelerated "XP Mode" that would let them take their old license, or even better the install that is on the drive, and make it a VM that has icons on the desktop that allow them to launch the VM and have it behave like a native app. That way there wouldn't be the pain of trying to find apps to do the tasks their now EOL software was used for as they could just use what they have and have Linux for new applications.

But I agree that Canonical doesn't seem to have any clue where they are going, its just one pie in the sky idea after another, and of course by getting most of the hype it makes the whole community look directionless and flailing. Actually I'm afraid sir you are wrong. You see if you had been part of the testers for Vista (I was from Alpha II) you would know that MSFT had made it QUITE clear for nearly TWO YEARS that the Vista driver model wasn't gonna use the "hey lets run everything as root!" driver model of XP yet the OEMs simply ignored MSFT and tried to continue toi use the XP driver model.

Sadly this wasn't the first time this had happened, if you were there you would also known they did the exact same stunt when MSFT went from the 16 bit based VXD driver model to the WDM driver model. In fact I would argue that this is the reason WinME was written off as a shitty OS, because if one loaded WinME with ONLY WDM drivers? It ran better than Win98. It went unstable when VXD drivers were loaded, but instead of refusing to allow the older driver model like they did with Vista MSFT tried to accommodate the OEMs and shim in support for both models and it was a disaster.

So as much as I hated Vista (They released the network stack too early, and they hadn't optimized the kernel at all, which is why by ripping out a good chunk of the stack and rebuilding it Windows 7 is so good) you can't blame MSFT on the driver borkage, you can lay that blame on shitty hardware OEMs like Creative. in fact here it is 2011 and I'd argue Creative STILL hasn't released a decent Vista/7 driver.

Oh and for the record I wasn't recommending Mac, which I think is just an overpriced Intel box, I was saying if he HAD to "think different" because there is one thing I'm sure you're aware of and that is that several will run total shit rather than touch anything by they that shall not be named. And two if I used OpenSUSE and when the upgrade rolls around and it AGAIN takes a big old runny shit on the drivers? Well then i'll get told I should have used Gentoo, or Fedora, or some other version of X.

Tell ya what pal, you go download the OpenSUSE from 4 years ago, upgrade to the current version, and see how much continues to work! Because I get a MINIMUM of 8 years with Windows and that is if MSFT can actually stick to the release schedule which is doubtful. other wise I get a full 2 years past the next release or 2 years after the last service pack, whichever comes later. that translates to 10 YEARS for Win2K, 14 YEARS for XP, 7 years for Vista, and 11 years for Windows 7.

Show me a distro where I can get 7 years without the upgrade deathmarch taking a big dump on my drivers? THEN you have a point. oh and don't say "LTS!" because currently LTS has less than 2 years and LTS might as well be a codeword for "uses old software" since many software packages are tied to the kernel, which is dumb as fuck.
