Re:Spending that kind of money on overclocking...
For some it's more than a hobby!

spuds
what about the ol' spud server?
though it seems it's down at the moment....it's VERY low powered. -
Re:Electricity Apocalypse!
Or a potato-powered one!

If you want extreme, you should check out these extreme guys... extremly fast!

Re:What is it with you Mac fanatics?
The site's down, but this article has the story of an alcohol-cooled 486 that lasted 3 minutes at 247MHz (a sober person had taken off the jumpers to put it away, and some drunk guy booted it and played Half-Life).

Bacteria vs. Potato Batteries
The bacteria battery sounds like it is more efficient than this potato powered web server, but the technology sounds more complicated and failure prone. Spuds are dependable sources of power.

totl.net cult ov the weekYou know... when i first heard clonaid's claim on the godbox (aka TV) i thought to myself: "hey!-didn't they make totl.net's 'cult of the week' a while back?" The ensueing 'proof' of their cloning success did nothing but lament this initial reaction...
Sure enough. Now who the fuck is dumb enough to actually think that clonaid not being a "real"(tm) company is some kind of news?
i rest my case...

Re:Makes one wonder
It seems such a waste of space if we're alone... even more so if you're semi-religious as I am (I believe that science can explain most of the universe around us, but it was probaly the "great arcitect" that set it up to begin with). As we learn more about the universe and life, we may understand where and how to look for life out there.
Life is one thing, intelligence is different. Before we all get worked up over SETI@home, why not take a look at STI@home - the search for terrestial intelligence?

When I get hungry

a little bitter? - maybe this will help!If only there was more on Earth...
Maybe you'd be interested in the TOTL STI project (STI= search for terrestrial intelligence) i'm sure if there's any intelligence on earth to be had they'll be the first to know.

Search for Terrestrial Intelligence (STI project)
You might want to visit the STI website then ?
They're planning to use the 90% unused brain power in every person out there, with the STI@Home project, but their Antartica station is still under construction... -
Re:Business..
Not sure why this keeps getting modded up in every single thread..
Moderators, I think its time we declared this the new All Your Base/Hot Grits/Natalie Portman/etc "Slashdot catch phrase" (TM). It should be modded down as such. After all, its only funny the first couple hundred times.
Please check the following link for information on how Slashdot catch phrases (TM) and other Memes work: http://totl.net/Cool/
You may now continue your regularly scheduled productivity draining activity. -
Something similar can be found here...
The mad people at totl.net have already done something along the same lines which was reported on slashdot a while ago (can't be bothered to find the reference). The idea is to make deleteing the whole website so easy that nobody will bother because it isn't a challenge
;)You can find the whole thing here:

yeah, a few people have... these were the first to come to mind though.

Terrestrial Intellegence?
What about these people? They had the idea a long time ago...
-
Re:Interesting but...
Search for Terrestrial Intellegence, eh? How about these guys . They have the same idea, clearly.

This is the link you're thinking of
Project Eunuch from the Temple ov thee Lemur.
It is a joke. -
Spare processing power?
Maybe they could help out the STI Project

Re:I call bullshit
You mean the Spud Server wasn't real!?
Next you're going to tell me that computers can't really date and that it really isn't this easy to hack a computer!
Now I'm beginning to wonder if even Project E.U.N.U.C.H. is true.

Didn't TOTL look into this a couple of years ago with Project E.U.N.U.C.H

Re:Return to sanity
I've heard of people overclocking a 486 to 247MHz This should help them out a whole lot!

Makes my machine look fat!I just have to say that my cobalt box is very upset with the 'picture' section. Her picture is very complementory as is, but at 200x200, it looks like she's fat!
The picture ruins her true description. `8r(
I'm very blue, i'm very thin, i'm very cute, and I'm lit up like a xmas tree! I have lots of sensative buttons on my front, with an LCD panel to see my 'status'. I'm looking for another rack mounted CPU so that we can 'stack'. I'm also fully mirrored, so redundancy is a plus!
With her luck, she'll get paired up with a gimpy looking desktop. `8r( but she so wants to find a slick looking machine of equal speeds...

Re:I'll show you cold!
You know what's funny? Some guys who call themselves Temple ov thee Lemur did just about that: using some bottled alcohol and a fridge, they overclocked a 486SX/25 to over 200 megahertz (albeit accidentally) before the chip cooked itself. An article about this may have appeared on Slashdot some time ago: see the project at http://totl.net/Eunuch.

Actually, you CAN run a webserver on a potato.

Not impersive at all!!
Check out the Extreme Use of Nearly Universal Cooling Hardware for a sample of what real overclockers can overclock!

If it's too good to be true then...
What did they do for afters, build a potato powered webserver or overclock a 486 to 247mhz using a fridge full of alcohol (a la totl.net)? Am I the only one who doesn't quite believe this?
Seriously though, if these guy really pulled this off I'm impressed. They put in an huge amount of work and money for what, by todays standards, is a pretty slow processor, but the sheer lunacy of it all has to be enough to impress anyone...It really was quite an achievment.

Re:In the words of Stan Marsh...
I think the loonies from Totl did something like this too a while ago in a freezer, and beer was one of the key ingredients. In fact, I think they used the beer cans as "icebags" for the CPU as well. Funny how these things work, isn't it?

Boot ROM on Network Card?
I was looking at the images, especially this one and that's a network card the "Spud Boot v0.3" ROM is sitting on, right?
Why is it sitting on the network card and not the mother board? I've never used boot roms but that doesn't seem right.

MS has been working on this for years . .

Real link
If it hasn't been Slashdotted to all hell yet, here is the actual link to the server in question.
