Crappy Summary, Iffy Article
The summary is misleading. The original source of all this hubbub is http://stellarola.tumblr.com/post/225234492/10-6-2-kills-atom-and-other-news. Basically someone noted that a lot of stuff in the kernel has changed so that the Atom processor that developer was using no longer works after the build. They list three work around methods. There is no inside information that this is an intentional attempt to block Atom processors as the summary's wording strongly implies.
The summary then goes on to speculate about the improbable and impractical wet dream of the writer that Apple should start licensing OS X to generic PC makers, completely ignoring the economic realities involved. You might as well end a summary of an article about MS losing an antitrust case by claiming it raises speculation MS will open source Windows under the GPL.

I think the Daily Mail may have some prior art on that topic...

Coffee causes/cures cancer
If they keep naming things with coffee references (including Java), what would happen if it's discovered that coffee causes cancer or shrunken balls or what not?
Don't have to wait - in the UK one of the more egregious papers regularly publishes a scare story about cancer. So much so that there are sites dedicated to Daily Mail Oncology Ontology.
Curiously coffee falls into both the good and bad camps.
actually it's not that curious - never let consistency spoil a good rant

Languages? All the more reason...
If you want to develop for the iPhone, you will use Objective C. Your only other option is a web app, but providing that offline may or may not be allowed, and either way, it's not likely to expose the same APIs.
Contrast this to Windows Mobile which, being an actually open platform (or at least as open as any other proprietary OS), will support any language people care to port to it. That goes double for Android.
Me, I prefer Ruby. "Aha," you say, "That has iPhone support!" As many owners of jailbroken phones will tell you, it's not that you can't do this on the iPhone, it's that Apple might arbitrarily reject you for doing so.

Re:If someone is looking up a "bad" word...
heir rules are made known when downloading the SDK and paying the 99$ fee.
I think the issue at hand is that the rules aren't actually made clear - see this blog of rejections for examples of things that have caught developers out.
It would only be a "BIG PROBLEM" (tm) if they were the only game in town. Vote with your wallet.
In terms of possible earnings, the iPhone might not be the only game in town, but it is probably the best game in town - it's got global reach, increasing market penetration, and a standard platform (iPhone gen 1, 3G or 3GS; or iPod Touch gen 1 or 2, all with the same mode of interaction), which makes it very easy to code for, as opposed to the multitude of permutations for Android or WinMo.

Re:WebDav vs SSHFS benchmarks
Well, here are some benchmarks:
http://jamiew.tumblr.com/post/382844/macfuse-sshfs-vs-webdav-benchmarks
Obviously blocksize makes a difference.
A simple test you can perform: time the copy of a large file over WebDav via HTTPS vs an SCP transfer using the same client+host. (Beware using putty or filezilla on windows as it's slow; at least compared to scp from linux to linux)
WebDav makes sense for subversion as it's built that way, so your other repository users will expect it. But for a plain remote file system, webdav may not be the best for you.

Re:VR was more hype than realityI would like to re quote:
Headphones are the motorcycles of the audio world. Sure the top end cars are faster/better but motorcycles are so much cheaper. Buying a $1500 pair of headphones is a lot more accessible than buying a well designed room with speakers.

Re:Hmm...
I don't know about you, I've never once seriously considered clicking on an ad.
I have, lots of times, and even wind up making a purchase from time to time after looking into things a bit more, but if it wasn't for advertising I might not have known about the product or sometimes even a particular merchant that offered a better deal.
Some advertising is bad, but on higher quality sites, you tend to have higher quality ads. There are exceptions to that though, but for the most part it seems to be true.
I don't know why people are so against advertising. When it's done right it can be beneficial. Not only to the publisher, but also to the viewer. Without advertising revenue, a lot of sites wouldn't be able to stay online. The problem is the sites that just exist to post ads.
Think of it like the Degree sponsorship of Eureka. Some people were put off by it, but I think they handled it well. How many times do you hear of some letter writing campaign to restart a canceled sci-fi series? They usually don't go anywhere. What Eureka did was smart, their keeping money coming into the series so it doesn't get canceled. Networks don't care how many fans like a series, they care how many advertisers like advertising on the series and while Degree and Eureka may seem like an odd choice, think of the huge market of sci fi fans that could definitely smell better.
By the way, I'm a fan of Eureka and I'm a fan of Degree. Not because of the show though but because out of nowhere I got a free sample of one of their deodorants and it smelled almost exactly like one of my favorite colognes. I could probably find something similar in another brand but since they sponsor a show I like I don't mind giving them my business.

Re:illegal file-sharing?
Additionally, how do they connect to their ISPs? Via Satellite? Because you know... landline is not available on the high seas.
And if you defend the new "definition" that the **AA fed you, then in my book, you are collaborators. Calling us murderers who steal shit on the high seas, just because we did not buy their crap, is insulting.

Re:Adobe
Well... Those "pirates" (ARRR) chose to download and use specifically Adobe product for a reason. When everything is free, you take everything, and keep only what you like.
If only others would realize the marketing potential of file-sharing networks.

Re:Different software appeals to different peopl
Have you used any adobe programs lately? the UI is an abomination (especially on the Mac!). Check this website number sometime. I dropped major cash for Adobe CS3 Master Suite for OS X last year. Major mistake. The UI doesn't look or feel native, is slow, full of quirks, and hard to use.
I'm lacking mod points atm so I'm going to quote this with my fancy pants +1 karma bonus, because it deserves to be seen. That website is utterly hilarious as well as totally spot on. Even if you don't care in the least about Adobe interfaces, give it a read for the comedy value alone.
I've got CS3 here (on Win), a new colleague recently started in my team and they don't sell CS3 licenses anymore so they ended up with CS4. I can't show them how to use anything based on my knowledge of CS3, because everything has been changed around for no apparent reason. I can't show them how to use stuff based on an educated guess of how Windows apps usually work, because it looks and works nothing like that. Well, in a lot of ways, they never did behave quite like native Win apps (what with the Mac heritage), but now even less so. And nowhere near native Mac either. It just looks like - bleh. Words fail me really. It's some bizarro dark grey explosion-in-a-flash-factory disaster. It's a total clusterfuck.

Re:Is there anyone who doesn't?
No, really? Is there anyone who is pro choice who doesn't feel the same way? I mean, I've never heard anyone who was honestly "pro-abortion," just "pro-having the option when life hits the fan."

Two New Software Freedoms
I propose two new software freedoms:
-2: The Freedom to run any hardware, for any purpose
-1: The Freedom to run proprietary software, to run any hardware.
I don't understand why people don't want others have the freedom to install proprietary software on Linux system. I use both Linux and Windows. I enjoy running the latest and greatest games with the fastest video and sound cards.
I want robust support from NVIDIA and Creative. If Stallman had his way, there would be a huge disincentive to have working drivers. I require that my computer works with the hardware I bought for it.
I'm sick and tired of misguided free software enthusiasts applying free software principals to hardware. Yes, I think that as an individual tinkerer I should have the freedom to study and hack hardware that he owns, but hardware is not software. Hardware is a tangible thing. The structure of our laws protect tangible things more fiercely than ephemeral things, like software and ideas.
One of the original purpose of Free Software was to liberate hardware from the limitations of its software by protecting the freedom of the user.
However, Stallman's philosophy that "A free system distribution must not assist users in obtaining any nonfree information for practical use, or encourage them to do so" is ridiculous. Why should this be so? How does this promote freedom?
This is my computer, and it is my choice.
Stallman can't see the forest from the trees.

Faulty DSDT
Unsurprisingly, faulty DSDTs often have a MSFT creator code. YMMV.

Re:No more $ for Obama; time for a General Strike
Then if Ron Paul cares so much about liberty and the Constitution, how come he did not vote on FISA?
Maybe because he's more of an anarcho-corporatist politician then he is an actual advocate for freedom? Or maybe he's busy lobbying for more shrimp earmarks and channeling "moneybomb" income to additional racist publications?

Re:Firewall tech
Another factor in this censorship could be that the average Joe cannot easily find "bad" websites. Google, for example, censors results in China. There's room for a fourth consoleMaybe this is a good time for them to get back into the console game. I don't know how much money they are making on games, but Sony has been showing us for a while that there is huge money in consoles. Plus the market for video games is bigger than ever and will probably continue to grow faster than other forms of entertainment.
True. Furthermore, all current-gen consoles suck.
I think there's room for a somewhat high-end console. Make it DVD based, put in a moderately good graphics card, HDMI, an ergonomic controller with a motion sensor, and make it not break once ever other week, and not sound louder than the PS3. Include a small-ish HD and price it 200-300 US$. It doesn't need Bluray, or a Cell. It doesn't even need to look quite as good as the Xbox. It doesn't need Ethernet, but put in wifi. Use an off-the-shelf dual-core PPC processor.
Then, get support from Activision, EA and Ubisoft. Get Sega to make a good 3D Sonic for it exclusively, preferrably a sequel to Sonic Adventure with only Sonic levels and no j-punk music so you have an iconic, console-defining game (this part should be quite easy if you are Sega).
I'd buy that, and I think a lot of people would.
