Considering it's not going to ever happen that's borderline customer fraud...

It seems like, unless Dell, HP, etc take Linux seriously by putting it on their machines and advertising it on the front-page of their stores, Steam will meet the same fate. Lots of companies have tried porting games to Linux, but I don't think anyone is buying.

Check out Sacred for a nice commercial RTS game for linux. Another excellent port from Linux Game Publishing. Buy the game at Tux Games.

Take any linux binary compiled 10 years ago and run it today on a shipping kernel. Oh wait... you can't. Do the same under Macintosh. Oh wait... can't.

BS!!!!! If a linux binary compiled 10 years ago doesn't work it is because it was compiled against some strange library that's no more supported, not because the kernel.

Take a look at this : linux 2.2.x or better! I repeat: LINUX 2.2.X OR BETTER!

Because nobody makes games for linux.

I don't understand why Linux Game Publishing don't get more credit on this page.

The ones that are interested in commercial games on linux, should start buying the ones available. Then there will be more. If few want to spend money on games on linux then there will be less new and exciting games available, it is that simple.

This happened to me when my brother bought SimCity 4. He was unable to play it (on winXP) but I was playing it with Cedega from his hard drive using his hidden shares (C$, D$, etc).

I'd still advice people to get a Nintendo for gaming and let the PC do the rest. If you really want to game on the PC, Tux Games has plenty of 'em, and wine does indeed run many (mostly GL based) games, like Half-Life/counterstrike, Command & Conquer, warcraft (except 1), far cry, battlefield, guild wars, elite force (and most other quake3-based games), eve online, most GTA games and many many more.

Also, when wine supports DX10, it'll be the only way of running DX10 games under XP (or any other OS that can run wine besides vista).

Yea? What about UT2004, Nexuiz, Sauerbraten, Cube, BZFlag, Quake3, ZDoom, Battle for Wesnoth, Enemy Territory, Quake4, Doom3 as am example of quite good quality linux playable games.

It's pretty simple, really: * You != an average Linux user. * Loki Software proved the lack of market for Linux games 5 years ago when they shut down in 2002.

Chalk me up to another non-average Linux user. I've got a 3 foot wide bookshelf with boxes of commercial Linux games I've bought (most of Loki's offerings while they were still operational, stuff from LGP, NWN, iD's offerings, etc). I wonder how many of us it takes to make a market.

Loki had a lot more problems going on than the lack of a Linux market at the time. They tried to be too big, too quick and go for too many AAA titles at once. Between having to pay large upfront license costs to port games (often six figures or more) and royalties from every sale on top of that, they just didn't have a business plan that met their market. They would have been much better off as a porting house rather than a self publisher (much like Ryan Gordon/icculus does now).

On the other side of the scale, LGP is working on a lot of B grade games. Some of them are very good but they're very, very slow and methodical in their porting. I've beta tested games for them which took more than a year to release after I got the first beta. They need to get stuff out the door if they want to be serious. Throw in Tux Games charging $50 for the exact same box you can buy in the discount bin for $15 (ok, here's $18.82 at walmart and you might skew the numbers because people aren't buying from them so they "don't get counted" as a Linux sale. In fact, you can pick up NWN, Quake 4 and Doom 3 from Walmart for the price of one game from Tux Games with shipping.

IMO, a lot of the problem is simply the game industry not understanding the linux market properly. A market exists but you can't go at it Loki style or you're doomed to failure, not because of the market, but because the business plan doesn't add up. Software houses should look toward portability when they design a game and the cost of a single developer to handle the Linux port of it would be pretty cheap in the overall development of the game (I haven't exactly done a poll but I wouldn't be surprised if you could find Linux geek willing to work for less than the average game coder just for the privilege of being able to get paid to program a game for linux). Another part of the problem are the publishers who dictate to the game houses what they're going to release so even if they want to do a linux version, it may not be possible.

Speak for yourself. I have several boxed versions of SuSE, RedHat, and Mandrake. I have purchased plenty of games over at http://www.tuxgames.com/. I could have downloaded everything for free. I choose to pay for it because I'm too busy/lazy to contribute.

The big difference between Linux and Windows is I don't have Linus searching my computer during updates to see if its Genuine

My laptop can't handle extreme graphic requirements and I can play only so much mahjong :).

Of course when I'm on the road I'm supposed to be working, but thats why I refused a company laptop and use my own :)

I like games as well, so I've spent a few years shopping at Tux Games or buy direct from Linux Game Publishing. Other than that I've also got a PS2. As far as PC games go, if they don't do a Linux version then they don't get my money. It's as simple as that.

Maybe if LGP didn't sell a game for £20.00, then sell an UPDATE for £3.00 which actually doesn't add any new functionality, but merely provides support for that game from LGP and the ability to install future updates, people would be more receptive.

Maybe if Tux Games didn't charge $35 more for Quake IV than Best Buy does for the Windows version, they'd get more sales.

What do you mean by doing "their bit"? Should they keep their mouth shut about the problems they have running the games they want to play, yet shout from the rooftops when something actually IS released that supports Linux? Should they purchase games they don't want, to generate more sales for you, which is really the only thing that's going to entice developers to give your company licenses for more games.
