TV-B-Gone!

Re:I see this as an advantage
All TVs with a remote control are exploitable.

Some are Better than Others
I was listening to a 2600 radio show podcast from a few months ago where they had the guy who made TV-B-Gone. I think it was a fund-raising show if that helps out for anyone looking for it. He talked about how they went over to China and looked into places for manufacturing. The place they chose has high quality chefs on premises to make food for the workers as well as giving lots of educational improvement to them. The factory found that keeping the workers happy leads to better production and less turn-over. The extra cost that TV-B-Gone had to pay to go with a morally sound factory rather than a Foxcon was around 10 or 25 cents per piece (I realize that is a large spread, I don't remember the exact number). So it is possible to find factories in China who treat their people well, make a good product, and are still rather cheap.

TV-B-Gone 3.0!
No doubt common "screw with Apple cameras" IR patterns will be added to a future iteration of the TV-B-Gone device...
I haven't read the application, but if the pattern somehow encodes the "watermark" (as opposed to just signalling one of a set of pre-installed watermarks on the camera) pranksters could have all KINDS of fun adding watermarks of ASCII-art porn, Blu-Ray decryption keys, profane graffiti, etc. to photos taken by people in an area.

Re:Time to retire IR for remotes
For simple remote control use, encryption is arguably overkill(at least until sinister antenna-studded Neilson vans start prowling around); but signing (or, at very least, a unique serial number or MAC address or something for the remote that your devices can associate with) isn't. Since RF propagates much better than IR through lots of common real-world obstacles, there is a considerable risk of one person's TV picking up somebody else's remote control commands, which could get annoying real fast. I've actually seen this happen with some of the cheaper RF based wireless keyboards. It wasn't a high security environment, so eavesdropping wasn't a concern; but when user A's keystrokes start popping up in the middle of the document that user B is trying to edit, people get upset. Much less common; but potentially much more annoying where they do occur, would be the RF equivalents of the "TVBGone". Unlike IR, where the list of suspects is confined to the line-of-sight cone of the TV, somebody with a decent omni antenna and a very-much-not-FCC-approved RF amp could blanket an entire neighborhood with spurious remote signals quite easily.
Serials/MACs would be enough to deal with spurious input caused by other users close by, or by RF noise; but would be vulnerable to malicious spoofing or replay attacks. Unless you were willing to just ignore that possibility(which, given the commercial existence and popularity of the TVBGone and its clones is probably a bad idea), you would pretty much need full cryptographic signing. At that point, if you are already doing a substantial amount of crypto stuff, why not spring for encryption as well, to address use cases where disclosure might not be a good thing? At that point, you are basically back to bluetooth, or something pretty similar... -
Re:This just in:
Just wait. They'll figure out a way to implement the equivalent of TV-B-Gone into the projected image somehow that causes all camcorders to turn themselves off.
In fact, I'm surprised they haven't mandated that every new camera contain firmware such that the detection of brown dots in the camera's field of view forces the camera to lock itself down (possibly also emit an alarm) so that it won't release the tape or other memory or do any other recording until turned in to a copyright enforcement office^W^W^W repair service. Of course, only surveillance cameras will be immune to this requirement.

!CueCat
No, it's not just like
:cueCat. The big difference is mobility. The :cueCat was tethered to a PC, making it almost completely useless. These things make it possible to get more information on a thing you want to buy while you're in the store in front of one. Now, there are those who say that being directed to marketing material is a less than completely useful thing, but in a world where these things were ubiquitous, my hope is that the amount of intrusive advertising around us might get toned down. "Scan this for more info" is a whole lot less annoying than having a TV-DVD player playing an infomercial on an endless loop in the store. The latest outrage is that the TVs in the grocery store now don't seem to respond to TV-B-Gone anymore.

Solve the "where are the parents" math problem.
There is a story problem, that asks you to find where the parents are located give the age of a child and one or both of the parents age. The answer is - 3/4 of a year. A.K.A the parents are fucking to produce cheap slave labor.

Re:Shooting shootings as a pretext...
I wonder if someone turning these stupid advertisement pumps off via a http://www.tvbgone.com device would be changed with disabling emergency communications equipment and expelled. They are easy enough to hide though, and like the typical threat of expulsion keeping people out of the steam tunnels, I'm sure it could become a popular pastime to use such devices.
some might even find it fun...

I predict that...
...this project will cause sales of TV B Gone devices to skyrocket.
Mine works very well, thank you. If my local Safeway pulls this crap, I expect to put the little widget to good use. ;-) -
A job for t.v. b-gone
If these things are run on ordinary t.v. monitors they can be turned off with the t.v. b-gone universal remote. At some point people have to fight back against the big brotherish aspects of our society. Thus far at least the telescreen has an off switch. And no I have no association whatsoever with the t.v. b-gone people I just think it's cool.

Exploding TV?
'The fate of TiVo also highlights the dilemma facing a lot of "exploding TV" start-ups.',
ok, I admit I'm not real familiar with the latest in television technology, but exploding TV's? what could possibly be the upside of that? faced with that sort of danger you'd definately want a TV-b-Gone. I'd say if their TV's are exploding TiVo's fate has definately been sealed. -
The only remote you will ever need...

WiFi-B-Gone
Will the next generation combine the WiFi-detector keyfob with the TV-B-Gone? Press the button and within a minute all WiFi in the area goes down...
