GNAA unveils new wiki-based corporate website
Today GNAA President weev shampooed his neckbeard, put on a greasy Linux t-shirt and left the warm glow of his spamcave to unveil the new GNAA corporate website in a keynote speech. "Inspired by the success of wikis like Wikipedia as platforms for spreading misinformation and infuriating trolls, we decided to transition our corporate webpage to the wiki format," said weev in between gulps and disgusting chewing noises as he stuffed his face with summer sausages and snack cakes to gain the calories needed to satiate his anxiety at being confronted with other human beings. "Jimbo Wales and his team of basement dwelling pedophiles have really taken the wiki platform leaps and bounds in propagating biased, inflammatory garbage. You can log on Wikipedia at any given moment and start or join some inane troll battle that amounts to semantics. They even manage to present defending child molesters as an encyclopedic pursuit while making active pedophiles who host child pornography paid members of their staff. I can't think of anything more offensive. I'd like to take a minute to recognize Wikipedia as one of the most wildly successful troll organizations on the planet."
Weev went on to deride the agents of Zionism on the Internet. "Of course, we couldn't possibly go with MediaWiki. Everybody knows that PHP is run by the Mossad. As a consistent promoter of racial equality we couldn't let our Wiki be subverted by Zionist control." He went along to praise the python-based framework the site now operates on. "We went with Trac primarily because it is written in Python. As you all know, Python is a fascist with whitespace. As an organization of black men, we do believe that whites need to be regulated in their spaces very carefully. All hail the prophet Mohammed, and the messenger Malcolm X." At this point weev made a fist in the air before switching his comfort food to fried chicken and watermelon. "May Allah bless us, and bring us to the day when we may see constant troll edit wars on our wiki, just like Wikipedia.

It Was All Erik MÃller's Fault
After all he is the the weird pro-child pornography worker at Wikipedia - http://valleywag.com/387735/wikipedia-leader-erik-mller-children-are-pornography
-
Re:Google is good for search...
it's actually 57K/year/child. The new child care facility has around 230 sq ft per child available (far larger than the space I got as a kid in day care). The setup was introduced by Sergey Brin's sister-in-law, Susan Wojcicki. And the upset employees are indeed taking their children elsewhere, according to this article.

Re:14,000 not 6,000
[citation needed]
Indeed... I took the time to read the blog he's pooh-poohing.
I don't care who wrote it and whether it's the same person or not, they have Gerard pegged - he knows his behavior is indefensible, so he's gone into [Personal Attack] mode right here on Slashdot.
This is of course the same David Gerard who's so "nice" that he regularly cusses people out... even when they were right all along.
The evidence is ample. Rather than this mythical "horde" of people who are trying to "ruin" wikipedia while "valiant defenders" like David Gerard stand in their way, wikipedia is simply full of psychopathic game-players who've ruined more articles than they've saved with petty game-playing, internal politics, and a destructive inability to do anything other than engage in edit-wars and ban-wars. The idea that it's an MMORPG, despite a tongue-in-cheek article penned by someone, is pretty apt - the difference being that if some nasty group of psychopaths decides to grief people and "hold territory" in a game like Everquest or World of Warcraft it just ruins someone's day, while when it happens on Wikipedia it has some shitty real-life implications... and not just when talking about biographies either, but on serious issues.
It makes me wonder... what else is David Gerard and the whole Wikipedia administration system trying to hide? How many people have they abused, lied about, and falsely accused of being "sockpuppets" for trying to fix the broken wikipedia system?
How many good contributors have been run off of the project because of people like David Gerard who see sockpuppets at every turn, whenever someone disagrees with certain "privileged" members?
Seeing him in action today has been like seeing some insane, paranoid night watchman who jumps at every shadow. Gerard, give it a rest, take a LONG wikibreak, and for god's sakes clear the names of all the people you have wrongly accused.

Precisely the Point
$2500 a month is a lot, and the vast majority cannot afford this. This is the reason, why so many employees are upset about this. Only the higher up exec. types can get their kids in. More info can be found here

Re:Food
They've already posted a correction. Google is still feeding their employees.
-
Food
It's always all downhill once startups start cutting back on the food perks.
From the linked Valleywag article:
"
Google's food perks on the chopping blockThere's no such thing as a free dinner. A worker at Google tells us the company is taking evening meals off the menu: "Google has drastically cut back their budget on the culinary program. How is it affecting campus? No more dinner. No more tea trolley. No more snack attack in the afternoon." The changes will be announced to Googlers on Monday. Workers at the Googleplex will remain amply fed, with free breakfast and lunch -- dinner will be reserved for geeks only -- but it's still a shocking cutback.
Last year, when we aired the mildest speculation about Google cutting back on free food, commenters were outraged. Google has long milked its cafeterias for their publicity value; company executives have crowed about the company's resistance to recessions and its commitment to coddling its employees. Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin even promised shareholders they'd add perks, rather than cut them.
In 2004, they wrote:
We provide many unusual benefits for our employees, including meals free of charge
... We are careful to consider the long term advantages to the company of these benefits. Expect us to add benefits rather than pare them down over time. We believe it is easy to be penny wise and pound foolish with respect to benefits that can save employees considerable time and improve their health and productivity. What went wrong?

Re:Shunning? You forget Andriod.
If by "a number" you mean "two".
Unless by embracing you mean "offering devices using" in which case that's "one": T-Mobile.
Sprint "joined" the Open Handset Alliance, but currently "has no plans" to allow such devices on their network. Sprint's chief concern? Android is "too open".
That's not quite how they worded it, but if you read between the lines, you'll realize that Sprint isn't quite about to allow a truly open device on their network.

Re:I think FF3's cert thing is lamer and lamer
Mozilla Corp's profits from search engine affiliation may indicate a commercialism that could be at the root of the change in how Firefox displays self-signed certificate warnings. After all, if Google can pay to have its search page top-ranked in Firefox's quick search menu, why couldn't Verisign pay to have Firefox encourage people (by inconveniencing users of websites with self-signed certs) to buy SSL certificates?
Given the many problems with the way CAs actually verify identities (and don't actually verify potential criminality), I don't really see the point in this aspect of certificates. Surely the fact that they provide public key encryption for sensitive information is far more important and should be encouraged. -

Re:What!?
Wikipedia is doing the same thing: Jimmy Wales is most certainly profiting from the information that millions of well-meaning Internetizens innocently contribute. By the way, did you know that Jimmy Wales is an Internet pornographer? Yeah, his legion of zombie "editors" does a good job keeping such thoughtcrime out of his main Wikipedia article, but the truth is out there if you look a little. And, no, this photo isn't a fake. (Yes, that photo is safe for work. However, if you do an unfiltered Google image search for "bomis", the name of Wales's most successful porno site, then you'll find a few things that are decidedly not safe for work.)
The next time you feel like making a helpful contribution to a Wikipedia article, keep in mind that your work is creating a product used to shill for Jimbo Wales's yearly allowance. And God forbid you give money to the fundraising drive yourself! Who knows? Maybe there will be enough cash left over to buy more bandwidth after Jimbo's taken his cut - incidentally, what's a nightly hooker-and-coke binge cost these days? But, oops, I forgot: those hundreds of thousands of donated dollars also have had to pay the expenses of Jimbo's entourage, including the violent criminal Caryoln Doran, Wikimedia's Chief Operating Officer in 2007! (No lie: she's a thug who's done hard time for multiple offenses.) It seems that even the Wikizombie groupthink can't keep everything a secret.
So let's see: the thousands upon thousands of unpaid writers who author Wikipedia content are actually helping to solicit "donations" for a gang of pimps and ex-cons? Just who is this Jimmy Wales character, anyway? He's like an evil MySpace Tom. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Wikipedia funds terrorism.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. -

Re:That's the worst they can come up with??I have to agree. I only skimmed the jobs, but none of them looked that bad...especially for a college grad coming out of school with no experience.
Not to mention that not all of them were even entry-level. I also went through them pretty quickly but in at least one of them they seemed to want 5 years of experience.
I don't really know how "Executive administrative assistant to Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore" is really tech either. Sounds like management.

other Second Rate Site Acquired By Big Media
CNet has been struggling recently and that valuation seems too high, but traditional media have a bad habit of paying too much for aqcuisitions of tech companies.... Comcast Acquires Plaxo, even though nobody can figure out how to make money AOL Acquires Bebo (popular, but not enough to justify almost a billion dollars) CBS (again!) Acquires last.fm (popular among bloggers but eclipsed by other sites in the real world) the only big media deal I can think of in recent years that was a good bet was Newscorp's undervalued' acquisition of myspace.

Why did we read these?
I had read the 'Best Places' a few days ago and felt that most of them were somewhat nice but still nothing great. When I saw this today I had to compare, and I was not disappointed.
This and this are considered 'the best'.
This and this are considered the worst.
There's not a whole lot different between the open table, no privacy of Mahalo/Gawker and the cubicles from Yahoo/Six Apart. Yet one set is at the bottom and one at the top. Right. And the attempt at knocking Microsoft is low, even for /. standards. -

At least http://valleywag.com/photogallery/Microsoftheadquarters/1001409785 is actually on campus (Building 33 if memory serves, which I bet it doesn't) and more than a few people do work on laptops out in the open like that (since main campus is pretty crowded and you're lucky to get a solo office without 3 or so years of seniority).
This is the most accurate look at the offices (buildings 16, 17 and 18) albeit not the lifestyle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N24TWrtlJEU

whoa
For a minute there I didn't see the person behind the desk in this picture, and thought Google greeted visitors in their lobby with just a PC, with a browser opened to their home page, maybe as a portal to a special internal "Google campus" search database that could tell you things like where Joe Blow sits or when the gift shop closes. Receptionists soon to be obsolete.

Re:Diminished Value?
I'm not sure how streetview is making Google any money because there are no ads on the site.
According to the article the Borings say that Google drove onto their property to take the pictures, but as you can see Google just took it from the road and there aren't clearly marked signs at the time of the picture taking. Or at least I can't see a sign from the photos on streetview. I got the address from here. -
WTF...
Personally I think this whole fiasco just proves (yet again) that when people are given the chance to speak their mind, they act like total dickwads. Bloggers and Twitterers are no exception. I mean, read some of the twits. Sarah Lacy may have been a terrible interviewer, but that's no reason to throw insults at her... Jesus. You'd think that the same people that twitter are the same people that troll YouTube and shit all over the comments sections...
-
Re:Too bad...
Valley Wag does. The twitter feeds are basically asses calling her stupid and what not. She reportedly replied that she hates everyone on the twitter feed. Oh well, another attention whoring soap opera to avoid in my eyes.

Who should I trust? Some blogger that writes a sensationalist article that uses a star wars reference and can't be bothered to read his own sources, or a wiki article that lists proper sources? Decisions, decisions
...It depends
... if Jimbo himself was involved in the edits ... that $325 per bottle champaigne he's charged to Wikipedia may have clouded his judgment. like this, etc, etc. -
Yahoo cannot stand alone
Good people who work at Yahoo are running for the hills. Even if they stay independent, there won't be anyone left to implement Jerry's secret plans to save Yahoo.

I know this is off-topic, but....
you might want to read on, anyway. Last week, I realised that Second Life's economy isn't the only economy that's a pyramid scheme benefitting above all the Guys at the top of the pyramid. I combined that with John Perkins story about how the super rich manage to rape the poorest people on the world, so I got a little worried, and decided to follow the money. Then, in a hunch, I decided to follow Hitler's money and also discovered a clear and credible link between the Nazi's and Al-Qaida. A few more steps and reality makes your worst nightmares look like a walk in the park. -- Multatuli --
