Re:And Linux users want 'free'
If you disagree with my opinions then it is incumbent upon you to provide evidence
I can disagree with your opinion all I like with equal validity because your opinion is factually baseless. See Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
... however if religious nonsense on the basis that it cannot be disproven is your thing then by all means carry on. -
Re:Say isn't this the same city with anti-vaxxers?
Atheism is a faith the same way that not having a bike is a type of bike. Atheists don't try to prove a negative, we just refuse to entertain proposed supernatural entities for whom there is absolutely no evidence.
Or are you saying that you are agnostic in regards to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Re:Green House gas is caused by liberals
Has anyone noticed the strong correlation between green house gasses and the Social Justice Liberals.
Don't be ridiculous. Everybody knows global warming is caused by the absence of pirates. The reason there was a 15 year pause in the rise of average temperatures was because of the activities of Somali pirates. Now that the various navies of the world have suppressed their activities, temperatures will begin to rise again.
-
Re:Windmills
It's also important to note that global warming seems to be responsible for putting Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster on the endangered list. This past year was really f***ing hot; meanwhile there was only one Bigfoot sighting and there were no Loch Ness Monster sightings. Coincidence? I think not!
We must act now to stop global warming before all Bigfoot and Nessie become extinct!
p.s. Global warming is also known to reduce the number of pirates, but that might be a good thing.

All are welcome! You know the Church of the FSM has never had a nasty or negative event attributed to it (save a mess in the kitchen). Everyone should convert. All you need to do it boil the spaghetti for about 4 mins and cover with your favorite sauce. You can even make you own sauce from scratch if you'd like! Heck make your noodle from scratch too. That's the one of the nice things about the Church of the FSM anything goes, but you have to be nice!

Re:An ode to wankery
As to the "pause" being a statistical artifact, warming has in fact flattened for about fifteen years so far - despite CO2 being at record levels. We'll see how long it continues, we're right at solar maximum currently and looking at a long stretch of low solar activity ahead. So, the next 20-40 years should give us a true concrete idea of how a solar Grand Minimum effects the climate.
The real reason for this pause in global warming is the increased incidence of piracy since the 90s. Ramen!

Teach all alternate theories
I'm fine with that. Teach that the vast overwhelming majority of the world's scientists support the theory of evolution by natural selection, a handful of people support intelligent design, and millions more support unintelligent design, the theory that the Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. (Disclaimer: I am an ordained Pastafarian Minister)

Re:I believe it

Isn't it obvious?

Re:Creationism = religion, not science. At all.The "Flying Spaghetti Monster" AKA Pastafarianism was originally created to illustrate how easily one can invent a non-testable "theory" of creation and existence.
A poster above also posits the "10 minutes ago theory," which is likewise non-testable (what is there to prevent an all powerful being from planting memories in every brain; old photos in every album, and ancient dinosaur bones in the rocks?)
Science is about testable theories; in fact I would argue the word "theory" implies testability, so we'll call the non-testable ones "explanations". I'm not sure where to classify the non-testable explanations, philosophy is a reasonable guess. Perhaps the main point to be made with non-testable explanations is that they are so easy to invent.
In any case, the science classroom is the place for discussing methods for testing testable theories, with perhaps a quick glance at several non-testable explanations to see how non-testability operates.

Re:Lead
One reason for the almost world-wide reduction in crime is the reduction of lead in the environment, thanks to unleaded fuel.

Yarrr!
Global warming be damned indeed! Not because we don't care what will happen but because increasing the number of pirates lowers global warming! Global warming will be damned to hell! Weigh anchor!

Re:Right, so...
Of course humans are the cause of global warming: Any idiot can see that average global temperature is inversely correlated with the number of pirates. There's good news though: libertarian Somalia has taken the lead on increasing piracy in the world, thus proving that rational self-interest will always solve environmental problems.

Pirates and Global Warming
You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

Re:if it's all about women's protection...
Do you really believe that the Muslims would have any interest in removing Nativity scenes, at least in the US? Yes, they don't believe in it, that doesn't mean they want it torn down.
Well, actually, they do believe in it, sorta. Except that they believe the kid was just a prophet like Moses, not the messiah.
If someone put up a Buddha or Ganesh or perhaps some Islamic imagery, I'm not likely to care.
Not likely to be Islamic imagery, since they aren't keen on representational art of that sort. But the point isn't whether you would care, it's that a lot of Christian fundamentalist types would. They don't want religious imagery unless it's their own particular flavor (which they do want to put up).
I can understand that we need to ensure equal time, especially with the dominance of Christian religions in the US, but one of the things that has always turned me off about vocal atheists is that they are, frankly, spoil-sports. There's no reason they have to be, but for some reason, they are. Fine, you think it's all a crock of shit, I get that, but don't be douchebags about it. Some of this stuff is lots of fun. If you really want to contribute, come up with something fun, instead of ruining everyone else's.
Yeah, some of them are spoil-sports. But I've noticed that some Christians also have a funnybone deficiency when it comes to religion. So you'd probably be ok with a Pastafarian shrine to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and think it's perfectly reasonable for the Town Council to let it be set up on the courthouse lawn. After all, meatballs and pirates, too, what could be more fun? But don't you think that in the Bible Belt, there'd be big trouble? Maybe, or maybe not, the Town Council's heads on pikes, but probably not brotherly love, in any case?
And while you'd think NRA types would go gaga over Kali (what's not to love about a cute blue female who's that into weapons), she probably wouldn't be popular on the courthouse lawn, either.

Re:God damn itMaybe not in the Congress, but thank the FSM for Bernie Sanders in the Senate.
I used to have respect for Kucinich, too.
Isn't there anyone in Congress who has the people's best interest at heart AND has a brain in their head?
The two traits are so uncommon in Congress that I suppose it would be wishful thinking to imagine that there was any overlap.

There's also this correlation (not xkcd, but still awesome):

Re:Can't say I have a problem with this
Now I know that the guy was a "computer specialist", so he could've perhaps gotten by. Some random techie fiddling with the computers doesn't need to "believe" in science (not that science requires belief).
Personally, I find it interesting to note the similarities between the wiring in the back of a server rack and the texture of His Noodly Appendages.

Re:He is wrong!
This man has not yet been touched by His Noodly Appendage. Once he has, he will know The Truth.
When the Flying Spaghetti Monster actually changes someones life for the better and you have millions of testimonies to that fact, you'll start to see the masses follow the FSM. Until then, ideas about reality which exclude a higher power are going to remain where they are today, largely unnoticed.

Re:Isn't that anti-science?
Oh come on. You can't deny global warming! Otherwise, how can you possibly explain the worldwide decline in the pirate population. Obviously the surge in pirate activity in Somalia is the FSM showing us that He loves us and wants to preserve the constant climate as His promise to us.

Re:Mermaid tears
Please mod parent insightful. Tear extraction from mermaids may be the correlative catalyst that explains why the number of pirates is reducing global warming!

Vikings and Global Warming
No matter when you date the start of the Little Ice Age, the cooling started at least as early as 1300 (when warm summers stopped being dependable in Northern Europe) and probably around 1250 (when the North Atlantic glaciers started to expand).
So, the vikings are to blame?
Of course, silly! The Vikings were, after all, basically pirates, and as anyone knows, global temperatures increase as the number of pirates declines. So it stands to reason that the opposite would hold true as well -- more pirates, colder temperatures -- and we do indeed see this trend, with global temperatures declining as the Vikings got up to speed. It's simple math, really.
So yes, the Vikings are to blame for the Little Ice Age. Quite appropriate that a group that believed in Ragnarok and Fenrir eating the sun and bringing eternal winter would then do just about that -- bring constant warfare and colder winters. Clearly, His Noodly Appendage at work, giving us historical proof of why we should wear pirate regalia.
Cheers,

Re:Science vs Religion: Contradictions?
I'd say it's time we stand up and demand that our story has to be taught as well. Let's see how much it takes for the school boards to take the pragmatic approach and realize that this would be an impossible feat and it's better to leave religion where it belongs: In the places where the respective religions are worshiped.
It's been done before...

Re:So
Actually, Jesus has nothing to do with FSM. FSM is a parody of any god-and-creation myth. Yes, it is a ridiculous fiction. The only reductio ad absurdum with FSM is the original open letter to the Kansas school board that said, basically, if you're going to teach non-science creation, I'd humbly submit my own theory about creation for consideration. And what proceeded was a perfectly ridiculous (absurd) conclusion drawn from exactly the same arguments that support "Intelligent Design." Nothing about Jesus at all.

Re:No.
When somebody at FermiLab tells you that gravity accelerates objects at 9.8 m/s^2 and uses this to calculate the trajectory of a ball very accurately, you believe them, because you can see this, and they can do it over and over and over.
but why? why does it do this? whatever your answer is, i ask "why?" again. we don't have a fundamental answer for "why?"
You are SO correct!!!! I agree 100%!!! And that is why I turn here for the answers to "why"!
