PiracyThey're going to cancel Talk like a Pirate Day and hire a bunch of navy cruisers to protect the shipping lanes from murderous thieves? or are we talking about copyright infringment where the 'injured' gets to make up numbers to say how hurt they are? We're talking about the second. They're looking into things like yesterday's automatic IR flashlight.
Funny though, the BBC article talks about in-theatre technology and this article talks about distributing to "universities, companies, Internet service providers and other network operators," which aren't movie theatres.
Personally, I'd rather we keep the pirates in order to combat global warming.

Re:Record set in 1933
It doesn't matter - the apparent increase is due to the decline in the number of pirates since the 1800s. http://www.venganza.org/

Re:controversial?
>>number of cat 4 and 5 hurricanes has nearly doubled in the last 30 years due to rising water temperatures
as you may not know there is also a correlation about the rising water temperatures, there are less pirates now. please see the reference http://www.venganza.org/
may you get touched by the noodle appendage

It's not fossil fuels...
causing global warming. It's the decline of pirates: http://www.venganza.org/piratesarecool4.jpg

Pirates
Quite obviously, all of this has been caused by the dwindling number of pirates (search on the word "pirates" in the preceding link).

Re: Aliens do NOT cause global warming!
It is caused by the Flying Spaghetti Monster as punishment for the fact that too few of us wear pirate regalia in his honor. The evidence on this is very clear.
-
No! It's the pirates!
Although your theory deserves attention, I'd like to suggest that equal consideration be given to Pastafarianism.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster faith teaches us us directly about the causes of global warming, and how they are directly related to shrinking numbers of pirates in the world.
We can argue about CO2 reduction all day; increasing piracy, however, is something that we can all start immediately. Give pirates a chance! -
Depends on how much spaghetti you eat
Also, I understand that if you wear an eyepatch, that strengthens the optic nerve on one side of your brain. It is proof of His Noodly Will.

Re:Get Ready For Apocalyptic Physics!
Chuck may have some problems when he discovers His Noodly Appendage has been tampering with the data.
-
No, seriously!
I think Pastafarianism is great! It's a high-humour way to get people thinking about origins for real.
Another one I like to point out is Periannan Senapathy's warm little pond, which is mathematically far more reasonable than Gradualism. It approaches the abundant inconsistencies in both Atheist and Theist viewpoints from the serious end, and can make people really stop and think. My goodness, how that must hurt some of them. (-:
Perhaps next year's funny randomness cult can revolve around a Holy Hamburger Patty engraved with the powerful sigil IHS ("In Hot Sauce") and served with spinach as a testimony to Pope I? -
Re:As a record store owner,
I feel for you, I really, do.
I am a developer and just had a similar discussion with somebody in a p2p hub.
He was looking for upgrades to his already pirated and cracked software.
I outlined my stance and got a positive reaction from the other users in that hub.
It was as follows, I don't mind if people download and play or use my software or others, but if it becomes enough to want to play online with friends every day, or enough to become a business asset, then that person SHOULD become a customer. Expecting upgrades for something you haven't paid for steps way over the line.
I would be proud to see my software listed on p2p, mainly for the fact of more eyes seeing it.
I just don't like the scrotes that take it too far.
ps, when I read about your national list of pirates, I couldn't help but think of the Flying Spaghetti monster. -
Re:We can't even agree on global warming
Actually, it's quite simple: we should preserve the pirates to stop the global warming.

Re:Lamarck and Darwin were wrong too
One of my favorite comments on this whole ID debate was made by the founder of FSMism.
He said (and I'm paraphrasing because I can't get to the site right now) that, regardless if it is correct, ID is not science. Science attempts to explain the universe by making observations and thinking up theories that explain those observations. ID uses what some people believe and looks for evidence that it's correct. There's no way to prove or disprove it since "God did it" can perfectly explain any observation you make. This is the exact opposite of science and teaching it as "science" is irresponsible. Again, I will emphasize even if ID is correct, it is not science. -
Re:groan
You've just re-invented Flying Spaghetti Monsterism. Seriously, go read it.

All Hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster
Have you been touched by His Noodly Appendage?

Re:Lamarck and Darwin were wrong tooNatural selection has had its day, but we've discovered it's not the primary driving force of evolution, only someone naive would think that, or was educated a long time ago.
Huh? What is then the driver of evolution?
That would be the Flying Spaghetti Monster, of course.
-
But it did spark a tasty open letter
But Intelligent design did spark a great open letter - check out the dogma of the Flying Spaghetti Monster at www.venganza.org

Re:groan
Personally, I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Their scientific evidence linking global warming to the dwindling pirate population is rock-solid. (Unlike, evidently, the majority of other scientific papers.)
As if that weren't enough, they also have their own car emblem.
May you Twirl on His Noodly Fork Forever. -

Oh no, I smell intelligent design..
The last part of this ask slashdot infuriated me.
You know what? He's good with dealing with spam. That's great & wonderful, but please end it there. Here at slashdot, we don't believe in such things as god or religion, it's just the twisting of words & IT related stories in a bitterly geekish way for us.
These people are all over the place. They're christians, and they pose as scientists to get you to listen to them, but once they start talking.. guess where it leads to? How great & wonderful god is for creating the heavens and earth, and blah blah blah. They're trying to delude you in to thinking they are not preaching the gospel, when in fact, they are. It's pure evil at it's finest.
I'm not trolling, but this is really starting to bother me, and i'm seeing it more & more in the news. It makes me sick to believe that these beliefs are actually taken seriously in social circles, and even more scary, in the educational field.
Just because I cant prove that a Giant Spaghetti Monster actually created the universe, does that mean it should be taught to children as an alternative view of how we got on this planet? No, it shouldn't. I take my science with a dose of reality. So should you. -
Just ask the FSM
I say "bah" on your emotional "theory of evolution." If you want an answer about extraterrestrial life, just ask the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Re:Oh boy...
The Flying Spaghetti Monster begs to differ with your "evolution" interpretation. He told me to tell you that you are wrong
... he designed men to vary more widely than women because watching their foibles is highly entertaining. He designed women to be more stable than men so that more of them would be around to cook pasta. -
Re:Easily Explained
Midget, I Touch You With My Noodly Appendage
Note: core rotation speed is the cause of global warming. Some smart Midget may, one day, discover why killing Pirates increase core velocity
-
Re:Easily Explained
No, it's clearly intelligent spin. There must be some agent of unimaginable power who is actively pushing the core to faster velocities. We cannot know why someone would want to do this, but as they must be very intelligent to figure out a way to accomplish this, we must conclude that they have their reasons.
Now, the real question in my mind, is the intelligent spinner Vulcan/Hephaestus, YHWH, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
My theory is that it's the FSM. While Vulcan and Hephaestus were gods of the earth and of volcanoes, they were only minor characters in the Olympian pantheon, and on top of that, cripples. Clearly they are incapable of pushing the Earth's core at all. YHWH is too busy turning homosexuals into pillars of salt to be bothered with core spinning. Therefore, only a noodley appendage can spin the Earth's Core at such a velocity. -

Re:Christian Beliefs
Seconded. Or how about:
First off, this is not intended as flaimbait - although I'm arguing against religion I'm honestly curious, and refusing to post as an AC to prove it. I've spoken to many intelligent, intellectual religious people about their beliefs, and I've never had a anything approaching a good answer to this question:
As an obviously educated, skilled hacker, how do you reconcile your (presumably) scientific, rational, empirical approach with your more faith-based (ie, no empirical scientific evidence whatsoever) beliefs?
For example, the overwhelming majority of arguments in favour of religion seem to rely on a simple (and long-discredited) argument-from-ignorance. Aside from this, the strongest evidence is basically word-of-mouth - someone else told you, or you read it in a book that another human wrote. If you lend credence to the Bible based on its age, surely you should lend even greater credence to, for example, Zoroastrianism, since it has an even greater claim of seniority?
Given that all major religions are supported by a pretty much equal amount of hard evidence (ie, very little), how did you conclude that your precise brand of Christianity was the correct one, and not Buddhism, Islam or Hinduism (or strict orthodox FSMism ;-)?
Did you compare-and-contrast every common religious approach, or did you merely settle for the first (or most accessible) one you came across? If so, what are the statistical chances that the one sub-branch of the one religion you happened to be most in contact with is actually the One True Religion?
If God himself decided you should be guided to Christianity (eg, by being born in a Christian country), what about all those he apparently forsakes by allowing them to be born into a Hindu, Sikh or Muslim country?
Basically, how do you conclude that any particular religious position is more True than any other (including FSMism)? And if you allow your religious side to trump the question with "unconditional belief", doesn't that make your rational, hacker side deeply uneasy at the possibility you could be voluntarily (and fruitlessly) misleading yourself?
I'm a comparatively spiritual person, but I can't bring myself to believe in any religion I've ever encountered (less possibly Discordianism ;-). The problem appears to be that:
i) There isn't a single religion with any kind of hard evidence in favour of it, and
ii) If I'm going to give up requiring evidence before I believe in something, how do I choose between Christianity, Scientology, Flying Spaghetti Monsterism or worshipping my own discarded socks? At least I can prove the socks definitely exist...
Basically, how have you resolved this dilemma, or have you merely side-stepped it and thus given up any claim on intellectual credibility? -
Re:America has a choice..
Where is ID being taught?
Kansas.
The evangelical-dominated state school board recently voted to accept a new set of standards that mandates it. Final vote in October.
More frightening still, they're also changing the definition of science itself that is taught in the classroom. From "seeking natural explanations" to "seeking logical explanations," giving easier entree to ID.
Thankfully, this opens the door to other "alternative" ideas that equally as valid as ID, such as Flying Spaghetti Monsterism. Also described in Wikipedia. -

Unicorn Theory can also be framed in such a way that it is not in conflict with the known facts, but an argument in favor of UT is another matter altogether.
The same can be said of Flying Spaghetti Monster Theory. The name is at least as good as "Unicorn Theory," plus there's a fun site to which you can link. -
