Visual Pinball + Vpinmame
Most of the VP only tables should run and if the systems are not too old then you should be able to get some of vpinmame games working as well others may end up running too slow.

I liked the music in the late 80 and on pinballs.
The games that Brian Schmidt did the music on are good.
Chris Granner also did some good work on many games as well.
alot of the system 11 and later wms games have real good music like
Black Knight 2000
Banzai Run
Big Guns
Earthshaker
Swords of Fury
Space Station
Whirlwind
At the same time Data East Pinball games used a stereo sound midi like sound system for the music.
The pre DSC Williams WPC games also have good midi like music
The later DSC and stern S.A.M system games use recorded music and most of the games have good music.
The Capcom Pinball games used a cool mp3 based sound system with real good sound and music in them.
Alot of the pinball and video games that used the BSMT 2000 sound chip have good music also.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSMT2000
Battletoads arcade is on of the games with good music that uses that chip
More info about the pinball sound systems is hear.

Re:Pac-Man, Pac-Man everywhere
Yep for Baby Pac-Man. Nope for Super Pac-Man. You can get the Visual Pinball version (screen shot). See here for details. Remember, Super Pac-Man lets you eat power ups that made you BIG!
I do remember the cartoon series. Cereal too! Halloween costume! Man, I was so obsessed with Pacman as a kid. -
Re:Virtual pinball, use for PPUs
vpinball has a pretty good physics model. Coupled with VpinMAME and you get something close to the real machine.
However, last I heard vpinball is no longer being developed and is a closed-source Windows-only application. Ah well...
I occasionally fire it up on my home-built arcade machine that has pinball flipper buttons on the sides of the machine.
Nothing beats the real thing though. There is just so much "stuff" in a pinball machine. The real ones are much easier to see what's going on. A 2D pinball game can't replicated the complexity of the real machines and a 3D model is difficult to see. -
You can always play old pinball in Windows...I know it is not like the real thing with the physical units, but it is better than losing all of pinballs!

Re:No more pinball
If you install Virtual Pinball, as well as the VPinMAME ROM emulator, you can play a near perfect reproduction of the Doctor Who machine (which I agree is one of the best pinball machines ever made), as well as many, many other great tables. I last installed this a few years ago, and it's a bit of a pain to get up and running, but it's worth the trouble for the nostalgia value. I believe that these days it's a bit easier to install, and everything you need should either be hosted at the above site, or linked from there.

This happened to me too, but only for interview
This happened to me too, but only for a job interview at Google. That's as far as I made it: I never worked for them or signed any NDA.
My resume was submitted, and I made it as far as the first phone screen. It was one of the best interviews I have ever had in my life! Everything went 100% great, better than I had ever hoped for. I felt we had really clicked. Then, it turns out that I lost the interview, because the interviewer read my blog.
He didn't like me talking about my job search or my experiences with Google's hiring process. He especially didn't like the way I described the interview, perhaps because it would have given future interviewees tips on what to expect. He valued his ability to "surprise" people with trick logic questions, and my description of the involved thought processes might have tipped his hand. (I've since edited my blog to remove the spoilers, as per his implied request.)
Google and Microsoft share similar cultures, evidently. Both select for candidates who are good at discovering the "a-ha" moment that enables them to see through a tricky logic puzzle and solve it. I'm not good at logic puzzles or riddles in general, but in this case, I was able to relate the puzzle to a real-life problem I faced (when writing a simulator for a particular mechanism of a pinball machine).
Lesson learned. The culture at Google is one of paranoid security, as others have confirmed with me. When interviewing (or working) there, don't reveal anything about the process. Merely mentioning the fact that you are interviewing/working might raise eyebrows. When in doubt, don't.
The good news is that the interviewer liked me, and encouraged me to re-apply. Since I seemed to learn my lesson well, he told me he wouldn't put me on the blacklist, so I've another chance. I believe the cut-off period for previous failed applicants is a year and a day.
During the time, I found a job I'm happy with now, and I'll definitely stick with it. I won't be jumping ship, in case you're reading this posting there and wondering :) The free food at Google is tempting, though.... -
Running VBS scripts under Linux?
Speaking of running Windows viruses... is there an existing tool to run VBS scripts under Linux?
I know, the last thing Linux needs is another scripting language, and VBS is such a horrible abomination.
The one non-viral use of VBS scripts I have seen is Visual Pinball.
There has been some talk of making a similar pinball simulation for Linux, but one of the major obstacles is that there are already hundreds of pinball games already simulated in Visual Pinball, by dozens of authors, and they all use VBS scripting (as required by Visual Pinball). This is required to interact with the PinMAME emulator (for modern games) or to implement the entire logic of the game (for old games that did not use a computer). It would be nearly impossible to get everybody to rewrite their tables again from scratch!
If Visual Pinball is ever ported to Linux, it would be necessary to write a VBS script interpreter for Linux (assuming one doesn't already exist). Heavily sandboxed, of course! -

There is an emulation of Baby Pacman and others!
DrMrLordX, please see these links:
1. http://www.pinballsim.com/
2. http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/pinmameguide.htm
3. http://www.vpforums.com/
Remember, this a virtual pinball machine customized by people to match the real thing. At least, you don't have to repair these emulations. ;)
Also, you need Windows for them. I'd love to see MacOS X and Linux ports. -
You can sort of play real pinballs...
Emulated types if you have Windows. Basically, people make models and graphics based off the real machines. I have to admit this is well done! See these links for details:
1. PinballSim.com
2. Visual PinMame Guide
3. VPForum - Complete Pinball Discussion
Now, someone please port this to MacOS X and Linux! -
Stern
I, for one, actually consider this news. The creation of a brand new pinball machine when most arcades subsist on "sit down driving games" and "light gun games" is a fortunate thing indeed. Now if I could only find a place that has them. Oh wait.
On the other hand, Stern is no Midway. A lot of their games have fairly uninspiring themes/designs IMHO (Roller Coaster Tycoon). And while they've finally gotten better parts for their recent machines, they do have pretty shoddy quality control. My Simpsons Pinball Party (TSPP) had such "powerful" flippers (Stern's older machine's were notorious for weak flippers) that they would shake when you held the flipper button down. This was due to a misalignment in the flipper coil. It came from the factory this way! Stern "tech support" gave the following suggestion to fix it: hit it (the flipper coil) with a hammer. Uh, yeah... I'm sure there won't be any more problems with the machine after I whack it with a blunt object a few times.
"What are you going to do with that hammer?"
"Mongo fixing pinball!"
Speaking of TSPP, they say in the article that the same designer is doing the Lord of the Rings pin. I hope they do a better job making it clear what the player has to do to score points then they did with TSPP. There's a fine line between a deep ruleset, and simply confusing the player. TSPP is a fine game for home use, because you get to take the time to learn its rules and idiosyncrasies. If I was playing it in an arcade, I doubt I would have taken the time to figure it all out.
That said, Stern is getting better and better with every new machine. It takes guts to stick in a market that everyone else has abandoned. I wish them the best of luck and hope they keep making new pins. -
Re:Bill Budge's Pinball Construction Set
Have you played Visual Pinball? It is a modern equivalent of Pinball Construction Set, with a 3-D table appearance, supporting ramps and multiple levels and such. It uses VBS (gasp) as the scripting language... the first non-viral use of VBS that I've ever seen!
Unfortunately there is no way to make a standalone player yet. It is a free program (closed source), but it runs only on Windows, and the author has plans to take it commercial someday so get it while you can.
http://www.randydavis.com/vp/
http://www.vpforums.com/I loved Pinball Construction Set, and made several Apple ][ disks full of games. Bill Budge recently did a very wonderful thing: he declared all of his past Apple ][ games to be in the public domain! A great thing, and I wish more authors of classic software would do the same.

Re:If you got over 3,000 bucks you may get one.
You can do what I did and build your own.
It has far more features than the ArcadePC, is made of basically the same components, and cost me $1000 less. -
Visual Pinball + PinMame
Hope I can turn some people on to pinball via Virtual Pinball and PinMAME. Most of your favorite games are available. It really has come a LONG way.
