My aunt's PC runs Windows 8. So does my PC at work. On both of these machines, I installed Classic Shell, which lets me avoid the Windows Start Screen (and thus most of Metro). Windows 8 thus ends up feeling like Windows 7.

RIP Wikipedia was nice to have known you
Given how many here retell stories of how they've been driven of contributing to Wikipedia, I conclude that as a social experiment Wikipedia has failed.
If they don't change course then Wikipedia is already dead and just keeps on with a zombie shuffle until the entries are so dated and irrelevant that they will be passed by.
For all those who's entries have been deleted I submit the speedydelete site to get your work back.

Bullshit, the Red Cross was more than happy to sue Bioware over using a red cross on healer's kits in Neverwinter Nights. (because god forbid that somehow an item named "healer's kit" or "health kit" might dilute the brand of a major humanitarian organization frequently involved in the distribution of medical supplies to distressed areas)

Geeky in multiple ways
I am using my Pi to provide video for a costume I'm making. It's for a character who has a television for a head, and being the electronics nerd that I am, I decided to make my costume version with a functioning TV. I got a cheap old LCD TV from eBay, and put some content on a loop on the Pi, and got some batteries to power it all. Very simple, and the connection is straightforward since the Pi has an RCA composite video out.
Of course, it's going to be a crappy costume unless I can figure out a way to make a nice shell to cover it all. So far my attempts at using fiberglass have been....mixed. :/ But for reference, the character is Prince Robot IV. -

That aside, there are some 'self-healing' plastic coatings that I'd be interested in seeing on a cell phone. I pretty much don't care how it feels - I just want it to work well and be low-maintenance.
Nissan makes a self-healing clear coat for their cars, I wonder how difficult it would be to use the substance on a flexible, plastic screen.
I'd love to see $30 smart phones on the horizon - plastic-sandwiched OLED could help there.
Eff that, wake me when someone starts marketing these

Bistromathics
I think Douglas Adams worked this one out a while back:
http://hitchhikers.wikia.com/wiki/Bistromathics
The third and most mysterious piece of nonabsoluteness of all lies in the relationship between the number of items on the check, the cost of each item, the number of people at the table and what they are each prepared to pay for.
You'd have thought that Google, of all people, would have checked to see whether there was an app for that already...

Re:Might Indicate More Females

Might indicate more females? Do we have a large number of non-gender or 3rd gender in the workforce taking up programming?

Re:Transcript please
I actually agree with your perspective on those matters as well, and was mostly just trying to be flippant. Certainly they're key to the tone of what makes Firefl—I mean, Star Wars—what it is.
However, the prequels committed much worse crimes than merely not being Star Wars-y, as Plinkett thoroughly demonstrates, and that's a much more important consideration. If the prequel trilogy had been made with a competent and coherent artistic vision, it wouldn't have caused such a nostalgia-hugging cringe response. I bet these same people would now be accepting Star Wars as a bigger universe than just the operatic romp encoded in episodes IV–VI. The Expanded Universe covers a ton of subject matter (admittedly, I haven't read any), not just gritty frontiersing, and yet it's still been successful as a book series. This is despite having Spooky Space Mitochondria and Senate debates for decades. Perhaps most surprisingly, Midi-chlorians have been Star Wars canon since 1977, before The Empire Strikes Back was even written.
That's not to say it wasn't good sense on Lucas's part to keep such exposition out of the actual films (especially the embarrassingly bad names—seriously? Darth Plagueis? You couldn't even remove the "e" so it would look like you were at least trying? Thank god he didn't get a shout-out or we'd never stop laughing), but they're not really barriers to competent or captivating cinema on their own. These other elements could most certainly have been put together into good pictures that could mesh naturally with the original trilogy, and they'd still feel like meaningful parts of the Star Wars world, despite the different tone, as demonstrated by the contrast between Battlestar Galactica and Caprica.

Re:you missed the point
This is a great feature for people too stupid to just use the other HDMI input on their TV.
My TV only has one HDMI input - and my receiver has two. (Not everyone has whatever you have.)
Another thing people seem to be missing is the latency in the controls for the game. The more links you have in the chain, the greater the latency between what you press and what you see. While it may not be a huge issue for many games that don't require a great deal of timing precision, for those that do it's an utter nightmare to compensate for. I have a hacked PS3 with some emulators on it that is wired through my receiver then to the TV. In Super Metroid, doing the mock ball requires some pretty accurate timing and is near impossible on my setup. While if I play on a PC with a wired controller, it is much easier to perform. Even getting some accurately timed jumps (i.e. wall jumps) is hard to do via the PS3. I know that HDTV's have latency problems sometimes related to scaling of the signal (i.e. 480 -> 1080). When hooked directly to the TV, the lag is a little bit less, but due to signal processing in the receiver I get a little bit of added lag. I suspect there's some small amount of lag in the wireless controllers, particularly if you get a lot of noise from other things sending/receiving in similar bandwidths (i.e. bluetooth keyboard/mouse). I'd imagine the XBO will do the same thing, and have the same problems. Queue all the CoD kicking and screaming.

Probably spot on unfortunately. Considering how militarized the police have become it's only a matter of time before they are deployed "for everyone's safety." Guessing the results will be something like the ED-209.

Re:Sure
I had to stop playing Fallout because it corrupted my autosave one too many times. That is just fucking unacceptable. No GTA title has ever done that to me, although I'm sure it's happened to someone somewhere somewhen.
I have indeed had this problem with a GTA game. GTA Vice City had a save game corrupting error. If you saved the game at Cherry Poppers Ice Cream Company, you would not be able to load the game any more. You would also have lost a lot of time as it's only available a bit into the game. I know it's not the best citation but here's the page at gta.wikia.com. I've had no other problems with the games and enjoy them all, but that corrupted save file pissed me off and really soured me on the Vice City one.

Re:Doesn't "Borderlands 2" Qualify?
... the idea that RPG and FPS have never been "blended" is false. Borderlands 2 does it, and does it in a package that is great fun (good for 150 hours or so of gameplay if you want to reach Level 70)
Also, you know... pretty much every Bethesda game starting with Fallout 3.
There is also the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Beta going on. That supports up to 2,000 players per server and is "FPS-like". http://www.jc-mp.com/ [jc-mp.com] What it lacks in RPG elements, it makes up for in terms of a huge map littered with vehicles you can drive, fly or float.
Well, 'right now' is a bit of a misnomer - there's an open beta once every 4-8 weeks it seems.
Regardless, I recommend anyone with a copy of JC2 to sign up, as it's fucking spectacular. No, really, you haven't had fun in a game until you've circled a gigantic yacht suspended from balloons with your military jet, while flying through a wall of 300 skydivers AND engaging in a dogfight with a tuk-tuk swinging from your tail section.
At night.
With your wings aflame.

Re:Predatory investing?
Why isn't it a good thing? It's definitely collaboration since it culls weak strategies and computer trading programs that are more vulnerable to such "predation".
Because trading stocks is about the transfer of investment, not the transfer of wealth. Strategies shouldn't even enter in to the mix, let alone "computer trading strategies".
Stock trading should be like the episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" with the Hickidu cards. Ray and the other kid's dad are all thinking about the dollar value of the cards, whereas the kids are interested in the cards themselves. Investors who see their stock in a company as a vehicle to get money by selling it don't really care about investing, they care about gambling on a semi-sure-thing. A real investor wants to see a company grow, and receive a modest return on the investment in the form of dividends. That dividends are now a rarity shows how badly the system of trading stock has been perverted. -
Re:Sounds promising
He doesn't WANT out. Or perhaps the people pulling his strings don't want him out.
I said "an out"....not just out.
That means he found a way out of the hole he dug for himself, with his toothless threats.
I meant he stumbled upon a possible way to accomplish something in spite of himself, I think on TV they called it pulling a Homer (Simpson).

Re:OUCH
Maybe he was just trying a random stunt that he though up off the top of his head.
I see we have Ba'al fan:
- Ba'al: Apophis. Last of the System Lords to stand against me. What have you to say to your new sovereign?
- Apophis: May your reign last days, and your death, years.
- Ba'al: That's actually rather good, isn't it? Did you plan to say that when you walked in?
- [Ba'al cuts off the top of Apophis' head]
- Ba'al: Or was it just off the top of your head?
