Re:Which 3rd party apps are those?
On the last few pages of the thread at XDA, there are links and screenshots of: PuTTY, Tightvnc, 7zip and BOCHS (just to name a few):

Re:on an android tablet...
on an android tablet...
... all I want to run is Android. Why?
Isn't that like saying "On a Windows PC all I want to run is Windows"? By that logic there would be almost no Linux PCs since most of them come with Windows pre-installed.
Dual booting Android and a full Linux dist seems like a pretty nice feature on a tablet. -
How to use this to your advantage
Use this APK to get root and install superSU
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297Now, whenever any app asks for root permissions, you will be asked whether you want to give root. This is how it used to work in my older rooted devices.
-
Re:Huge Security Hole Has Been there all Along
-
To actually root ...
Strangely, TFA makes no mention of an app built to actually use this exploit to install SuperSU (root access management app): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297 - i.e. what most users consider getting rooted.
Of course, this exploit can be used by any app, and a user can use the core exploit manually to install SuperSU (or Superuser) to let Play apps that need root (but don't contain this exploit
;)), but the linked method does all the work for you already. -
Re:Root
Looks like someone has a quick fix out. It's an app that sets the perms on the file properly, but it does cause problems with the camera on the S3. The app lets you toggle the permissions on and off so you can still use your camera is you wish. I haven't tried it as I don't have a phone with the hole, but teh XDA guys are pretty reputable: Here it is. Certainly can't complain about the open source community on something like this, although it would have been nice if he reported it to Samsung a little in advance of the release of the problem.

Re:you read the set of permissions.
I installed PDroid with the Auto-Patcher, but
We do not support system.img, Odexed roms or Sense, TouchWiz or other OEM-skinned AOSP at this time.
, so you're probably out of luck.
-
Re:Internal conflict?
Why do you think this even *can* be fixed? Windows 8 and Windows RT come with full Admin access. They're rooted by design
It's not quite full access. Try disabling code signature check (to run arbitrary desktop apps, not just those signed with MS key) to see what I mean.
Sooner or later, that's going to be circumvented, too - some folk over on XDA are working on it - but, so far, they haven't cracked it.

Re:Windows beats Android on crapware
I think your making some big assumptions. Rooting the one x is very easy. Worst case scenerio most of the time is you have to reflash.
Or just deal with a locked phone full of crapware...
-
...but Firefox does
[To run Flash on your Nexus 7,] You might want to try Dolphin, or Firefox.
From this page: "I got a notification from Dolphin that Flash would be disabled in my browser because it was no longer supported and caused the browser to become unstable. Now all Flash sites won't work for me."
I tried this tutorial with Firefox. I was able to watch halfway through a Zero Punctuation video until I clicked "full screen" and the video stopped, replaced with a circled exclamation point. Did Flash Player crash? I just want to make absolutely sure it'll work before I commit to a 12-month Prime subscription.

So?
All I can think of is so? Google has been know to give android phones
to those that root and make that info pubic, this was before the cell phones public release.
No cite but rooting a Motorola Xoom (Google's) I came across that tidbit on www.xda-developers.com.Google isn't Apple they don't care nor would they have a problem with it
Here's how and it's 2 days old http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331

Defy can run Jelly Bean, no need to replace it
Uhhh... I have a Defy as well (Defy+ actually but the difference is negligible). It runs Jelly Bean (4.1.2). There is now an early demo of Jelly Bean 4.2, the version just launched with the new Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.
You don't need to replace your Defy. Just root it if you haven't already, and install one of the many available roms on it - everything from Gingerbread through ICS and JB 4.1.2. The Defy is actually a good example of how futile those locked boot loaders and restricted systems really are: the latest Jelly Bean versions run a custom kernel.

Re:First impressions on Surface
For enabling sideloading, it's just the Powershell command Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration (must be run as Admin, though). You can read more about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/Hh974578.aspx
To sideload apps, you'll generally download a bundle (probably a ZIP archive or similar) containing the
.APPX file, the certificate for the key which signed the app, and a Powershell script. Such bundles are generated automatically by Visual Studio, including the entire script. Just run the script in Powershell, and agree when prompted. It will install the certificate if needed (i.e. if it isn't already installed or doesn't chain to one that is) and then install the app. The entire process takes well under a minute for most apps. For desktop apps on RT, it's still pretty messy and complicated. Probably best if I just link you to the forum thread where the work is being discussed (and there are links to explain how to do things): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885399

Re:Serial Numbers
This is also completely not true. This is "unlocking" your phone and has nothing to do with changing your IMEI/MEID. I can use my verizon LTE android phone in South Korea. I just have to unlock the GSM bands and put in a relevant sim card. You can find instructions to that effect here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29010852 again please don't spread completely false information. Google exists. use it.

Re:I need a new phone soon
If what you want is a good, unlocked Linux phone, get a Galaxy Nexus. It's $349.00, it's unlocked, it runs Linux (wrapped in Android but allowing you to build your own kernels), and it's actually a good phone. If you're not in the US market, and you don't want the N9, consider the Razr i, which also has an unlocked boot loader. Me? I'm happy with my iPhone 4S, I'll just keep iOS 5, thank you very much

Re:It's because they removed the SD CardDon't get the HTC One X. I have had a terrible experience with this unit, I might be unlucky but an XDA developers thread of 11 pages seems to confirm that I'm not the only one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594281
I have had the same GPS issue (as did 2 other units from family members, but they hadn't used GPS yet) as mentioned on the forum, but I've heard (from the repair pickup guy) that some units also have lots of issues with Wifi. My phone has now been picked up 3 times, once they stated nothing was wrong but that it would be fixed in a software update (your non-existent issue will be fixed in our future software update, uhuh), which it didn't. 2nd pickup (after a 3 week long escalation to their 2nd/3rd line) they changed out the mainboard but that had the same issue. 3rd pickup, unit returned with yet another mainboard swapped and the issue seems to be resolved, however the USB connector on the mainboard doesn't align properly with the body opening so I need to wiggle and force to get the phone connected to the charger/PC. I can't properly seat it on my Brodit car holder for this model because of the misalignment, and previously I had no issues.
With regards to the SIII: I like the hardware and SD card upgrade possibility, they have a decent in-ear headphone included as well (HTC has the same cheap set as they did with the HTC Desire), I just don't like the look & feel of the Samsung body. Putting a sleeve/skin on it is not an option if you want to use a proper car holder since they expect the bare phone, no extra's on it.
There are a few other things I don't like about the HTC but those can be solved in software/apps. They have no automatic rotation for the home screen and their car app only has Google Maps and HTC Locations as navigation software choices. If you have purchased a different Satnav (or you use Waze) you won't be able to choose it. -
Mine is rooted
I jumped through a few ROMS before I settled on the Hellfire Kindle Sandwich.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585814Unless things have changed, you don't get hardware acceleration unless you're using some modified version of the stock ROM (hence the sandwich).
It runs reasonably well for what I do with it, which is next to nothing. If it wouldn't have been free, I wouldn't have it.

Re:Better Android
My camera works great with my Evo 4g. In fact, everything but 720p video record works great with CM 7.2.
I have never enjoyed a phone as much as I have enjoyed this one and CM is one of the main reasons. I wish the prices of these phones would drop (consdering their age) so I could get my wife one.
The fact that so many of roms use it as a base is great as well. I only wish that less people would use icecream sandwhich as a base since that one lacks 4g and video playback for netflix (but I get the appeal of using it if these things don't matter - I am sure there are people who can't live without 720p video record.)
I am currently using MokeeOS SharkBoy Edition.

Re:Shower
I have a waterproof phone. I don't use it under the shower though... It does survive my rather boisterous life style, from forest stream to stubble field to that rainy day on my bike. It even runs the latest incarnation of Android so if you really feel the need to inhibit your creativity under the shower there is not much stopping you...

Re:DIY...? Latency :(

The problem can be avoided by using another dialer
Luckily Android can be very customized and thus we can work around this.
This can be blocked if you use an alternative Dialer App.
E.g. Exdialer (free).Read the XDA thread where they investigate.
"The best solution i see at the moment is to install another dialer - when you navigate to malicious page android will display "choose dialer" dialog before doing anything, and you can cancel the operation by pressing back button. Just don't check "default" checkbox." (Source).
Of course, a confirmation dialogue should have been shown for *any* USSD codes.
To be honest, I still find it crazy that anybody can borrow a Samsung-phone and press *2767*3855# on the dialer and it would wipe it. This will probably not be fixed even if Samsung patches the dialer.

Re:Limited hardware supported, not by vendor thems
OK, is $30 a month reasonable enough for you? Assuming you are in the USA, you can buy the Galaxy Nexus (unlocked) from Google and use it on T-Mobile's Pay as you go service. Here are a couple of XDA threads which may help you out: [GUIDE] Smartphone Service for just $30/month [INFO][GSM] Own Your Cell Service

Re:apple just doesn't want to touch that
I was asking because XDA has a ton of ROMs for Android devices. I see a few ICS ROMs for the Galaxy Tab here if you want to give it a shot.
I'm running of the XDA development ICS ROMs on my phone and it works great. -

True. And it's almost useless outside the US.
Unless you choose to root the device and install a third party ROM. The Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) releases are shaping up nicely:

Re:Native Linux Distribution?
^ LinuxOnAndroid is pretty good if you want a chrooted linux running on your phone simultaneously with your Android. You run a vnc server to connect to the chrooted linux if you want the full gui desktop. Otherwise, you can just use the shell.
I have been using it on a Nexus S 4G since last 6 months. Nothing much to install. Just download the image (3-4GB) and use the app to run a script which sets up devices and does chroot. Or you can do that yourself on the android shell. And the developer Zac is quite responsive on XDA if you need help ( I have NO Relation to the Dev - just a happy user)
You can do almost anything you do on a linux box. Only problem i face is the soft keyboard on the nexus. NOT at all conducive to scripting though many key combos and Tab etc are there through vol up/down + a key. See a ScreenShotof the Soft Keyboard and how it takes up Almost ALL the screen ! Something with a hardware keyboard like the Motorola androids might be best for scripting etc.
Offcourse, if you want to play around with local devices or devices attached on USB host/otg etc of the phone, then you may prefer to run linux without chroot.

Re:what the?
Ok.. I don't get it. I got my Nexus 7 preorder on Monday and did not have *one* problem with packaging. As a matter of fact I have liked the packaging of every Nexus product I have bought as well as even thought the graphic design was good. I had no problems breaking the seals and opening the box.
I am much more concerned about the fact that the unit will not charge and the fact that so many people at places like at xda-developers are seeing the same defect time after time and the fact that I am having such a hard time getting an RMA.
Be glad you didn't buy an Apple product. They are so inferior

They have that too. Gave up on CyanogenMod for anything but my Nook (it's the only passable mod for it that I've found) when they made their reasoning clear on why that would never, ever be in the mod itself.

Re:The Jelly Bean Luxury
I do. My phone is an original Samsung Galaxy S i9000 released in 2010.

There's a CM9/Jelly Bean ROM out already. It's not suitable for real use, but I don't think it'll take long.

That's why for the premium Android experience I always suggest people buy the Nexus device. I have a Nexus S and a Galaxy Nexus and both have the latest Android and have been guaranteed to get the jelly bean treatment. As far as I know the Galaxy Nexus is available for all major US carriers as well.

Re:sudden outbreak of common sense
You may not know, but you can get ICS on your Ace. Check this XDA-Devs thread for some community-built ROMS (many CyanogenMod 9 based). FWIW, It just looks prettier than Gingerbread. You can achieve the same thing with a different launcher from the Market.
