If the references to S3refresh.exe here are anything to go by, your machine probably has an S3 8xx video chip (my guess is that it's an 805). XFree 4.2 doesn't support those (yet), so you'd need 3.x if you want to run Linux/*BSD with X on it.

No, it's not. This allows a user to zoom in on a portion of his desktop. However, it doesn't allow the user to change its size or bit depth.

Huh? X has always been able to do zooming; you don't need RandR for that! From the spec:

The Resize and Rotate extension (RandR) is a very small set of client and server extensions designed to allow clients to modify the size, accelerated visuals and rotation of an X screen. RandR also has provisions for informing clients when screens have been resized or rotated and it allows clients to discover which visuals have hardware acceleration available.

The problem is that good quality fonts are extremely time consuming and hard to make; so no-one wants to give them away for free.

There is the Luxi font set donated by Bigelow & Holmes which seems quite popular, but I can't say I like them much :(

ATI doesn't have a history of releasing the most reliable drivers, but that doesn't mean their cards are no good for XFree86 systems.

Unlike nVidia, ATI has chosen to support open source development for their cards rather than produce their own closed-source drivers. Consequently, nVidia has a set of good drivers for both Windows and Linux, but no one but them knows anything about their implementation or their hardware specs; ATI, on the other hand, produces no XFree86 drivers of their own, but they've given some support to open source efforts, and now we have a set of open source drivers that work pretty well, although they're still in development.

ATI did a good thing by providing developer resources to the whole community, because now we have an open-source software implementation that will last forever and important hardware information that anybody can implement a driver for. The difference between nVidia's and ATI's policies are analogous to offering a man a fish, as opposed to teaching him how.

On a similar note Dell has been configuring their laptops with the intel 830m chipset (I purchased an Inspiron 2600) so the BIOS won't play nice with Xfree86. The BIOS only allocates 1mb of video memory which isn't enough to get full screen resolution. You need a Windows specific BIOS hack from the restore CD just to get decent screen resolution. That's bad when even the WindowsXP CD can't play nice with the BIOS settings.

Look at this, and virtually every other thread, regarding ATI. See how many complaints there are about the poor drivers despite the superior hardware. Contrast to nVidia, whose drivers support every card made going back 3 years, have great performance, and are usually very stable.

This may be good for Microsoft and Linux users, but what about users of FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and all the other x86 OSes? Users of these OSes (including myself) have to put up with the substandard "nv" driver, which does not even support hardware OpenGL. Even the open-source S3 drivers has more features (such as XVideo support) than the standard nVidia drivers, despite the fact nVidia cards are clearly superior to S3 cards from a hardware perspective.

In contrast, ATi is very well supported across many of the various x86 OSes which XFree86 supports. The ATi driver, which was developed using funding from ATi even does hardware OpenGL aswell as many other enchancments. ATi, aswell as companies like S3, has done more for open-source software than nVidia has done. They have donated an entirely open-sourced driver to XFree86, enabling it to be ported over to different systems -- while nVidia has opted to only provide a driver for Linux systems running XFree86 only.

I bought a nVidia TNT2 card just so I could get a video card that worked with FreeBSD/XFree86. But my next purchase will be an ATi card due to the simple fact that it is superior to nVidia when it comes to drivers that works on FreeBSD/XFree86. I couldn't care less about the quality of the Windows drivers since I hardly use Windows these days.

• Native GDI Server - Translate X11 graphics calls into GDI graphics calls; currently we just draw to an offscreen framebuffer and transfer updates occasionally. This allows you to utilize the power of your $100+ graphics processor. Most respectable commercial X11 servers for MS Windows use this method.
• Clipboard integration - We have been working on this for a long time. Currently we have a seperate client, called xwinclip, that provides this functionality. We recently added support for passing Japanese text through xwinclip when running on NT/2000/XP.
• PseudoColor for TrueColor visuals - A lot of applications, particularly drawing or CAD programs, require a palette-based PseudoColor visual, while most people run Windows in TrueColor depths of 15, 16, 24, or 32 bit color. We would like to support PseudoColor visuals when our primary visual is a TrueColor visual. Some commercial X11 servers for MS Windows do this.

Well, strictly speaking, changing resolution is already there (Ctrl+Alt+plus/minus on the keypad).

What you really mean is probably to change the desktop size along with the resolution. There is some work in progress on the RandR extension (Rotate AND Resize), which should deal with this (and other interesting things).

Changing refresh rates while the X server is running is already possibile with XFree86, since you can do it using xvidtune (still, you have to copy and paste the modeline it generates if you want your changes to be persistent across sessions). Perhaps, a nicer app to do this wouldn't hurt (volunteers?).
