You seem to be implying that the situation is so horrible already that abandoning any and all pretense of institutional norms is a distinction without a difference.
Not even close.

meaningless pedantic wanking indeed
A single data point is statistically meaningless "woe is us" wanking UNLESS other industries are surveyed.
Other data points are irrelevant to the subject at hand. How more or less other workers are burned out in comparison has jack and shit to do with IT, and Jack left town. If waitresses have it worse, it doesn't mean IT has it better. If accountants have it easier, it doesn't mean IT has it harder.
Your attempt to forcibly inject relevance to the subject has no relevance.

Re:Much too late...
I'm having difficulty equating something like EQ or WOW that's "15 dollars a month for all the gaming you can eat" with loot crates.
MMO's (aka RPG's with drm that have a subscription), means the game is divided into two pieces where they take control of the software and thereby have fully ownership and control over it. The company can shut down world of warcraft, because part of the game required for it to run is kept at corporate offices. To put it in DVD terms, they just keep DISC2 in a DVD burner inside their office. That's all "MMO"'s are... they are just drm'd rpg's with a subscription.
So once they have control of the game software they can put microtransactions in it because they control it. You can't put microtransactions in quake 3 for instance because iD didn't take the server code outside of the exe and keep it inside a seperate program in their office. AKA wow requires two computers, there server and your computer, quake 3 only requires YOUR computer it is a fully complete piece of software. So whenever you buy an "online" game you're buying the client that you run from your end and a piece of software they never give you that they control, so you never get a complete game and they have control over whether the game functions tomorrow if they decide to tank the server at their end.
It's just a sophisticated form of fraud, companies are taking advantage of the fact the human brain is bad at reality and thinking clearly, see the science:

Re:Not yet
Keep in mind the context is expecting Intel's ambitions for x86 in mobile, and on that front mobile market is *very* mature.
To your points:
> Battery life doesn't fill a day. This is a design choice that the vendors make. They prioritized thin over battery life. The processor role in this is so limited now that Intel can't even in theory 'fix' it with an awesome new processor.
> Displays are too small
For the class of device, this is the nature of the beast. The only potentially acceptable alternative would involve AR, which is a new class of device. Either way I'm not seeing a processor changing this.
> It's too big to hold. It's too thin to hold
This is subjective, and currently the manufacturers think this opinion is the minority and do not think they are 'wrong' about form factor.
> It can't do anything more than one thing at a time
The platforms are capable and do allow more than one thing at once. The form factor is prohibitive, and a default behavior is to suspend applications, but developers can opt out of suspending if their application has some need.
> It can't project.
Mine can: https://www.motorola.com/us/pr...
> It can't transfer peer-to-peer.
I have removable microSD card, but even beyond that the platform is very capable of sharing direct wirelessly, but the companies with control direct things to their servers for lock-in, though from a usability perspective that works well too.

All meat diet
After hearing about a distant cousin who lost 60lb on an all meat diet, then Jordan Peterson and his daughter
.. And being 60lb overweight myself... I said fuck it, lets give it a go..So far seems like a great choice, leaves me wondering if Europeans or Northern peoples in general may be extra adapted to survive off meat/fat.. Down nearly 40lb, feeling better over all, eating all I want(that doesn't have carbs) every day... The thought of becoming allergic to beef is scary now!
It's just as easy to think of carbs as poison as it is for vegetarians think meat is immoral..

Don't worry: Oliver serves American empire
Recently John Oliver ran a piece on Venezuelan elections which was quite well debunked for being the US interest piece it was. Oliver has done comparable pieces serving American interests (some outright, some by silence) including his 2016 election coverage which never closely examined Hillary Clinton's campaign (there's not much there to like from an anti-war perspective when one gets into the details of her record) while dismissing the entirety of Dr. Jill Stein's campaign for one issue he disagreed with. Oliver had a segment on the sharp escalation of the drone war under Pres. Obama but covered in a way that doesn't criticize Obama much and lacks the drumbeat repetition that might educate Oliver's viewers on the horrors of extrajudicial assassination (including killing Americans and children). Circa 2016-02-28 Oliver got ironically worked up over then-candidate Trump for plainly stating what was Obama's policy after playing a clip of Trump calling into "Fox & Friends" where Trump said "...the other thing with the terrorists, you have to take out their families. When you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don't kid yourself. They say they don't care about their lives, you have to take out their families.". Oliver replied "That is the front runner for the Republican nomination advocating a war crime." without pointing out that that's also precisely what Obama had already done and that killing people is objectively worse than ugly words. Oliver's drone segment was a one-off; easily missed if you didn't happen to catch the show or that segment, and not featuring catchphrases that pepper the show elsewhere (thus no risk of educating the audience about this to the point of raising a generation that would object to this war).
Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman's famous book "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" is well worth reading (and see the documentary based on this book) to understand the full extent of the famous Chomsky quote:
The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.
Modern news-based comedy shows contribute to that quite well with their carefully calibrated anti-Trumpism. With one notable exception (RT's "Redacted Tonight") all of those shows make fun of Trump in very comparable ways (looks-based derision such as his skin color, hair color, weight, the fit of his suits, etc.) and even draw on the same sources to tell them what constitutes news (largely whatever CNN says). But they don't dare give drumbeat coverage of critical issues that would seriously challenge American interests such as empire building, war, pointing out the continuity of policy across administrations, or the ugliness of capitalism.
So there's no real surprise in this turn of events. Censoring this particular story either comes from a lack of understanding of the Barbara Streisand effect or has roots in self-promotion. Issues that are eminently worth criticism remain firmly outside the range of allowable debate for corporate media.

Much too late...
... this began way back when game companies took regular RPG's and relabelled them mmo's. Those of us who remember the big scam during the 90's to "convert" normal RPG games to server based rpg game with subscription. AKA instead of buying the game once you 'get the benefit' of paying over and over. It was the first big scam the game industry perpetrated on the public. The reality is market ideology is false, the human brain did not evolve to make rational decisions in a market society.
Broken games, mass spying in windows 10, loot boxes, etc. Is because a large part of the public is just downright irrational and intellectually incompetent, from every class and walk of life. I'm sure there are tonnes of educated professionals that bought world of warcraft... but the problem is our species is fucking shortsighted and ignorant as fuck.
For those us who are rational and won't give our money to criminals, they can grow a new generation of idiot kids, teens who then become adults and think buying software you don't own is somehow normal and the human species eat's it right up.

Re:Life cycle of a modern Apple product
I have a 2013 MBP. The lack of ports, and the mess of USB-C standards and inter-op problems, useless touch bar, and later on the butterfly keyboard problems have kept me from buying another one. I'd jump ship except I really hate Windows by comparison. In my mind I have to be willing to accept the issues that come with linux to jump. I doubt Apple will change course so I might just buy from Dell or Lenovo next time...
Then along the way:
Apple breaks this guy's $5K iMac Pro
Messed up hinge, bad repair job, run around for the VESA mount that Apple sells.
This also catalogs a lot of Apple failures...
Anyways, I've been using Macs for 12 years now... The obsession with thin over functional may come to a head soon...

Its plot wasn't the best, but I cut them a lot of slack, figuring that movie had a crushing load to carry (it had to not fail, and it had to not have all the fans hate it) so it made sense that the plot was loaded up with things that we'd seen before.
I was looking forward to the next one... and then it was The Last Jedi which is just a bleak mess. Oh well.
Disney can manage the look and the feel. They just need to get a good story and let it play out properly on screen and we could yet get watchable Star Wars movies.
So now we find out that George Lucas's big vision was to do a new trilogy about mystical creatures being the power source for The Force? He still thinks midichlorians was a good idea, and he wants to use that for the new trilogy? That actually sounds worse than The Last Jedi to me.
George Lucas seems to be getting worse over time. I thought ewoks were kind of annoying... then, Jar Jar Binks... now "Whills"? I'm glad that didn't happen.
The original Star Wars movie was actually pretty terrible in its rough cut. Deft editing saved it, and Lucas had three people helping him sort out the edit. Then Empire Strikes Back he handed off script and directing to other people, who did a great job. Then in the prequel trilogy, he wrote and directed and what we got was exactly what he intended... and it wasn't great. He needed other people pushing back on his bad ideas and helping him in the areas where he is weak, and he didn't get that. His first idea went straight to screen and he was never forced to rework and improve. Lazy directing went straight to the screen. Nobody had the power to say "no" to him. Too bad.
P.S. If you haven't seen this, and you're a Star Wars fan, this is totally worth 20 minutes of your time: How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit
P.P.S. Oh wow, "Journal of the Whills" was part of George Lucas's original name for the movie! If you watch that video linked above, you can spot it on the picture of the first page of the script.
But even if George Lucas insists that this Whills/midiclorians thing was his original plan, I don't buy it. He was making things up as he went along. I'm certain that the plot point of Luke and Leia being siblings wasn't invented in time for the first movie, or else they would have probably skipped her giving him a peck on the cheek for luck; original concept art had everyone armed with glowing swords, not just a few characters; etc. A lot of what we love was added during the process of making the movies, and much of it came from creative contributions from people who were not George Lucas.

Re:Call me crazy...
You have to be kidding, episodes 1-3 were a directoral disaster. Watch the redlettermedia review for a lesson on movie making....

We wish we could pull your brain apart and reassemble it into a normal brain.

Re:Call me crazy...
George Lucas is one of the best producers and directors in Hollywood. He is also a *very* poor writer and a mediocre editor. He however has the money and power and clout to fill that gap and should.
Take the original star wars. The story was borderline wooden and boring. The effects and the pacing though were head and shoulders above anything else out there at the time. Coppola, Spielberg, and Fischer rescued the movie from the doomed movie it was. They tweaked the story and dropped out the garbage. Lucky that he listened to them. To bad he did not listen to that in 1 to 3.
He fairly much reinvented the entire industry and how it makes movies. Because he wanted to see better movies. We owe him a lot. Remember the original Star Wars was a bomb in the making. The studio knew it and even negotiated his pay downwards in exchange for merchandising rights. Something that would be worth nothing if the movie bombed. ILM for a long time was pretty much *the* special effects house being in almost every movie that had CGI or miniatures and good sound for a long time. Being involved in hundreds of movies. Even Pixar was a spin off from ILM as it was not quite ready at the time. That alone pretty much single handedly rescued Disney from making crap movies.
He is amazing at the art of making movies. His story writing leaves a lot to be desired.
Oh and everyone *thinks* he is out of star wars. I seriously doubt it. Disney *bought* his company. He is now one of the largest share holders of Disney stock and an employee.
But mostly Disney has been tone deaf to what the people buying their product want. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
What George makes is kinda bad in a story way but amazing to watch like you say.
George if you read this for the love of god make more movies. Just hire some good writers and a decent editor.

Re:Probable trajectory"Don't worry. Harry will do it. I know it. He doesn't know how to fail"... not sure Jeff qualifies, and Elon is on even shakier ground.
If not for the magic of movies, we might be relegated to reality-based expectations of human behaviorial outcomes.

More asinine regulations
If you watch the Youtube video its just a weight held by magnets. I can wrap rubber bands around the steering wheel and it would accomplish the same thing. Might as well send a cease and desist to Youtube for showing how to circumvent the system. And if I tell my friends how to do it, will I get a cease and desist letter too?

Re:Liability...
Actually, we need a "Cease-and-Desist" order for drivers who refuse to pay attention to the road, despite the explicit instructions from Tesla.
This, because it will be hard to C&D oranges . Actually police should just mail this guy a speeding ticket for fun, since not only was he driving recklessly, he was also clearly speeding by 6mph.

I'm pretty sure it was Europe.

Re: I remember a lot of people defending Uber
I think a running commentary should probably work. The Advanced Driving test in the UK has this as part of the requirement. Example here. Would need to be adapted for the nature of self driving cars, and would require some training of the operators but nether of those are barriers. Would certainly keep the safety driven engaged, which is the key point. Would also allow comparison with what the car sees and what the driver sees.

Look into Generative Adversarial Networks. The principle you're talking about has actually become a (very, very promising) training technique.
We are reaching a point where we can't trust photographic or video evidence without a secure chain of custody.
