When videogames had gambling in them, you never could've paid real money to play, and the trick was mostly about finding the right one-armed bandit. And it wasn't bad - you got to enjoy some chiptunes and you would eventually get a sweet Porygon for your effort.

If it was simply "buy this skin" no RNG involved, people would not be having a shit fit. But this RNG "slot machine" type of behavior is exactly designed to bilk players out of money and hand out as few valuable items as possible. You know where like a real slot machine pays out 93-97% of the time. Loot boxes may never pay out.

Absolutely. The math has been done and the apprximate amount of money one has to spend if you wish to unlock all of the content (in the game you've already paid good money for) is 2100 $! Or, alternatively, without money, it takes over 4500 hours of gameplay to unlock everything!

The greed of EA is beyond disgusting. The SW license is one of the strongest out there, and heavily liked by kids and teens, and they purposefully use it to design a grind-marathon which is designed to incentive people at throwing money in the hopes of getting something useful. The business model is even greedier than most of the free to play models it's been copied from, and we're talking about a 60 to 80 dollars full-price release. Even more pathetic are the weak excuses the asswipes at EA tried to conjur up to defend this racket by saying it's desgined to 'give players a sense of accomplishment and pride', when the in game progression doesn't even relate to player skill in any way. It doesn't matter if you're a top player or a rookie, the rate at which you progress without microtransactions is simply tied to time in game. Skill and accomplishments have nothing to do with it. It's a 100 % pay-to-win system designed to do nothing but drive sales of the lootboxes.

This is why I prefer the game commentator/youtuber Jim Sterling's (whose made several videos about microtransaction BS this year, including this recent one about this EA/Battlefront situation) terminology for these 'triple AAA' releases with lootbox shit: 'fee-to-pay'. It's absolute BS and I do hope these shitty developers end up getting burned. Wanna include gambling mechanics to your full-price release? Fine, but can't sell it to underaged people then. And I do hope Disney ends up force chocking the license out of EAs hands if and hopefully when the sales of Battlefront II fall short of their expectations because of this.

As a longtime gamer and a SW fan I plead all here: do not buy this game. Don't buy it for yourself, don't buy it as a gift, don't even buy it at a discount. It's the only way the companies will ever learn. Don't be fooled by the decision to disable them for now, Dice admitted already that it's a temporary measure while they're 're-adjusting' the system. Meaning. they tried the waters out, now they're waiting for the holiday sales to pass and the dust to settle before introducing a watered down version of the same bullshit.

Compare this to proper publishers like CD Projekt Red: like I just recently picked up Wicher 3 with both of its expansions from a steam sale at 20 euros, and I do have to say CD Projekt Red are doing it right: you buy the game, you get all the content straight out of the box. And before someone points out that it's somehow 'different' for single-player games I remind you all that in this Year of the Lootbox WB included a shitton of mictrotransactions and grinding in Shadow of War's single player campaign.

This behavior is destructive and antithetical to the whole point of quality games, because introducing intentional grind-fests that are meant to bog the player down with menial repetitive tasks is sending a message of 'yeah, we know the base gameplay sucks, we intentionally designed it to suck, but hey, you can skip it by paying us more money and get to the good stuff'.

Fuck. These. Publishers. They need to fall and be replaced by companies that actual develop stuff gameplay first.

Being opposite handed is an advantage for the batter, not the pitcher. There's two big reason for that:

1) The batter can see the ball easier while it's still in the pitcher's hand. You're looking across the plate toward the pitcher. In a same handed matchup, the pitcher's release point can be behind your back. You loose sight of the ball during the windup and can't track it as quickly. Being opposite handed buys you a little bit more reaction time.

2) In a same handed matchup, most pitches will have horizontal movement away from the batter. This leads to a lot of contact toward the end of the bat instead of the middle, which results in weaker hits. In an opposite handed matchup, the ball will be coming in toward the batter. This makes it a lot easier to make contact with the sweet spot of the bat.

Left handed hitters have a huge advantage. It's also relatively easy for a right to learn to bat lefty - far easier than learning to throw with the opposite hand. You want the left handed pitchers to counter the left handed hitter advantage.

I find it hilarious when TV announcers say asinine things about lefties, such as that they "throw across their bodies."

A pitcher steps forward as he throws. If you plant your foot off center, your upper body won't rotate smoothly and it makes your throw less accurate. That's called throwing across your body. Both righties and lefties can do it. When pitching it's a bad thing.

Pickoff throws are a very different story though. When throwing a pickoff to first, a left would normally step straight forward, telegraphing his move to the runner. If he lands his foot off center toward the home plate side, it takes longer for the runner to figure out if the throw is going to first or to home. You don't need nearly as much accuracy on a pickoff throw as you do on a pitch, so throwing across your body can be a good tradeoff. Giving up a little accuracy to make your move harder to read is well worth it.

A right handed pitcher is facing third, so he has to spin around to throw to first. There's no room for deception there, so there wouldn't be any benefit to throwing across his body.

Here's a slow motion video of Andy Pettite throwing a pickoff to first. Look how far off to the right his foot lands, and the awkward arm motion it results in. It's incredibly deceptive and one of the best pickoff moves of all time.

The point that i am trying to make is that the definition of "masculine" is incredibly subjective and there is no way to create a logical argument on what is masculine or not. I am glad to see comments about the Milky Way's beauty, which I only experienced once on an country road trip in college.

Astrophotography posts on reddit may have more info if you're curious about implementation, and in my limited knowledge you'd need good DSLR lenses, software post-processing and rotation mounts to follow stars and planets well enough, capturing several seconds per "frame."

Anyway, parts of the video prior to that 3 minute timestamp aren't immune from a bit of obvious light pollution. Even that kind of star visibility would be desirable and impossible anywhere I have lived.

My neighborhood is in a major city and seems better than most nearby ones. That still amounts to very bright *gray* night sky backgrounds that obscure almost all the stars. There's virtually no visibility except for some tree-dominated spots like the front of my own block, and sometimes I need to look out of my peripheral vision to see any stars. It's worse after snow accumulates and the bright gray sky becomes an odd shade of pink for some reason.

Living here for 10 years, I had noticed for the latter half that I can barely follow the stars that used to be somewhat more visible, like the constellation of Orion. Now in my mid-thirties I have wondered whether the problem is my night vision degrading "naturally" (as happens with hearing) or of the pollution problem was supposed to be noticeable over one's lifetime (2% a year doesn't seem to matter).

One of my dreams is being in an area that is dark enough to watch the Milky Way with friends again. I don't own a car nor have any business near towns 2 hours away that would offer that chance. I somewhat satiate the physical problems for filling that thirst for astro-philia by using software. Before I knew of open source, I started with a demo of Starry Night (just found the current pro version is $150).

Now I use free multi-OS options like Stellarium for Windows and Linux. It is a looking glass to the sky, sensitive to your local latitude where you can remove the atmosphere or accelerate time or zoom into stars and planets).

Celestia allows traveling in space and time with nice planet models of the solar system and beyond. It was handy for roughly tracking the eclipse "shadow" above North America in real time at work. It can also show let you track the ISS. I have a blast when fixing perspectives to watch Earth from the ISS (I recall an earlier version back when MIR had stopped floating around), or using it to better understand retrograde loops in planet motions (http://www.nakedeyeplanets.com)/movements.htm) and syncing up with the pole and letting earth spin a time lapse to watch the polar shadow to grok the seasons without thinking of flashlights shining on basketballs.

It's a funny world, with all different manner of thought processes. Some of which are from people who will refuse to believe rational truths, but will believe any half baked contrary idea.

If this was an accident, it was an interesting one, because the helmet shield is reflective and spherical in shape, and that means that the person taking the photo will always be in the image. when taken from a front angle. So it could not have been an accident. The so-called hippie took the photo.

We can enlarge the helmet reflections in any of the photos, and there the photo taker is. When we have to enlarge it a lot, the fuzzy indistnct reflection might look like just about anything. I have one that looks like the other astronaut is dancing at a ho-down.

When in fact, all of the technology was in place to successfully take humans to the moon and bring them back safely. The orbital mechanics was proven, the computing devices were working, and the suits worked, the containment structures worked, and the Saturn 5 monster worked very well.

Seems a shame to have all of those nice toys just for Stanley Kubrick to make a fake documentary in the desert.

By the way If a stagehand got in the way of a photo, Kubrick would have noticed and the image would have never been used.

Why, sure there is! The American Petroleum Institute said so themselves in a 1956 documentary - the Martians just need to kick out their communist-ish government and they'll find it!

The right solution here is to use some other voting method: IRV, range voting, approval voting, whatever. It doesn't require changing the Constitution or the Electoral College, but it does require teaching math concepts to the U.S. electorate and convincing the courts that this doesn't violate "one man, one vote".

In all but FPTP the third largest party would be able to decide who would be Prime Minister, i.e. exactly the problem Deutsch identifies with voting systems with a reduced Gallagher Index than FPTP.

And as he points out the experience of Israel and Germany shows this is a problem in practice

In Germany for 49 years the FDP with <12.8% of the vote usually chose which party would govern, twice changing sides and 3 times putting the less popular party (measured by votes) into power. Meanwhile nothing the voters could do could oust the FDP leader from the Foreign Ministry. Only the 4th party finally did.

Also look at those simulated 2010 results. The number of MPs for the third largest party increases as the system becomes more proportional. However the number of MPs for the 'Other' parties does not change by as much. This is important because as Deutsch points out the only way to stop the third largest party choosing the PM and having disproportionate power is for the fourth largest party to take over as the third largest party. However the third largest party - who is always the one proposing electoral reform - will typically say something like 'our new system makes it harder for extremists to get seats because we have a threshold'. So something like STV might have a 10% threshold before seats are assigned.

This does keep out extremists. The problem is that it defines 'extremist' as 'any party with less support than the top 3'. I.e. 'proportional representation' is simply a way to grant disproportionate power to the third largest party.

But even if Putin outright invaded Ukraine, it would only be a million times more justified than any U.S. "intervention" you could name, given the fact that the U.S. overthrew the elected government. It's not like the U.S. would just sit with its thumb up its ass if Russia overthrew the elected government of Mexico and immediately moved to expand the Warsaw Pact to America's border.

The facts are indisputable. It's a fact that the United States spent billions to subvert Ukraine's democracy - the assistant Secretary of State is on video - right in front of a big Chevron banner - bragging about it. It's a fact that snipers and junta security officials have confessed to being behind the the attacks on protestors and police. It's a fact that the vote to impeach Yankovich was unconstitutional as it lacked the necessary votes. It's a fact that the United States swooped in and recognized the junta as "legitimate" and immediately gave it money and weapons.

Maybe they do have better engineers. At least in this particular niche.

You're pushing a false narrative that poor people are poor because they have bad morals. It's used by the wealthy to excuse abandoning them to their fate. It helps you feel better about yourself when you ignore their plight. It's a narrative, and a false one. If it wasn't society would be in chaos since 100 years ago during the Guilded Age 90% of people were what we called poor. There's plenty of other evidence to make that narrative into so much bullshit, but the folks who push it (like yourself) generally won't look for such evidence because, well, it means admitting you're being a stinker by abandoning the poor.

Seriously, most businesses don't need to be "administered". Administrating is for the conglomerates, and although I'm sure conglomerates need new canon fodder to back-fill their management ranks, it certainly doesn't have the number of chairs to support the multitude of MBA conferring organizations that are out there today. Even among huge conglomerates long McDonalds and Costco, they often draw their executives from line workers not freshly minted MBAs...

For the non-conglomerate business, the reason they often fail is for lack of vision, not lack of administration...

As for the "accounting" MBAs, well, do we need to engineer more Joint Energy Development Investment Limited Partnerships, or ChewCos?

As for the "finance" MBAs, well, do conglomerates need more leveraged buyouts, or engineer more Credit Default Swaps?
