Some analysts are already predicting that the car market will be 50% EV by the mid-2020s, and will "tip" rapidly thereafter. This trend is mostly driven by the cost of Li-ion batteries, which has been falling at about 15%/yr for the last couple of decades. When it becomes possible to buy an entry-level EV for $20k or less, why would you even want an ICE vehicle?

The "fuel" price for EVs is a fraction of that for ICE, as is the maintenance cost. EVs only have a couple-dozen moving parts, compared to thousands in an ICE car. Of course, there will still be "gas car" enthusiasts in 2040, just as there are hobbyists who still maintain antique steam-powered farm equipment. But even by 2030, there will no longer be a need for this law, because the market will already have flipped.

I just watched this presentation yesterday by Dennis Whyte from MIT, and I must say it looked quite promising. His main point was that the recent development of commercially available high-temperature superconductors has radically changed the fusion playing field.

This is due to HTSC's having much larger operating windows compared to traditional superconductors. This allows one to scale down the reactor size while maintaining the magnetic field strength. And smaller size means cheaper and faster development.

He probably glossed over some hard problems, but I must admit it sounded a lot more realistic than other fusion proposals I've heard about.

In this video by Wendover Productions on why the Concorde failed, they mention the economics of commercial flight. Sonic booms aren't the problem. Long story short, flying time doesn't matter as much as ticket revenue and fuel cost. If an airplane consumes more fuel flying faster than the speed of sound than slower, and people aren't willing to pay for the increase in cost, then airlines won't fly faster.

The sonic boom is not really an issue. The actual sonic boom from Concorde at cruise altitude...posed no real risk.

No, the sonic boom really was a serious issue and was the reason why Concorde was limited to flying to the eastern seaboard of the US. It was not that it was dangerous but more the noise which you can hear in in this video around the 1 minute mark from a plane claimed to be at 50-60,000 feet. It is certainly not negligible and you would not want to be hearing that multiple times a day if you were living under a flight path.

The take-off noise is also not negligible. As a grad student, I remember waiting on a plane to take off at Heathrow one evening when there was a deep-throated roar, the plane vibrated slightly and Concorde shot down the runway next to us with blue flames shooting out of its afterburners. It was a heck of an impressive sight but not exactly a quiet one! While fuel costs are certainly an effect when they were shutting down the Concorde program one expert commented that a plane designed today would be hugely more efficient but that the fact it would still make a sonic boom would limit it to so few routes the market would be too small to make it financially viable. If NASA can fix this then it could well cause a renaissance in supersonic flight.

No. Overheating happens well above 60 mph & it usually caused by aggressive regen & not enough cooling of the drivetrain. This is a weakness of the Model S & other lesser-priced EVs but it doesn't have to be the case.
The Concept One doesn't have that issue nor the even more impressive NIO EP9 which has similar specs to the Concept One & set a track record at the Nurburgring.

Regulators are *way* out of their depth on this issue.

Firstly, there are already regulations in place that make it illegal to endanger person or property using a drone. With this in mind therefore, those who *do* endanger person or property are obviously doing so out of ignorance or arrogance.

Just making more regulations does *nothing* to address ignorance or arrogance so it shows a lack of intelligence on the part of regulators.

What is needed is:
  1. education (this addresses the issue of ignorance)
  2. enforcement (this addresses the issue of arrogance).

Simply expecting that by making more regulation, those who are presently unaware of the regs or who choose to thumb their nose at them, will change their behavior is an incredibly naive perspective.

In the case of drones, the regulators are operating from their own position of ignorance. They are not au-fait with the technology or the culture and therefore they are trying to solve symptoms not causes.

The very first thing the regulators need to do is to draw a distinction between the idiot-droners (ie: those who buy a GPS-assisted camera drone from eBay and go fly it at the airport) and the responsible and traditional model fliers who have been safely flying remotely controlled aircraft, helicopters and multirotors for many decades. Without drawing this distinction, any regulation will be excessively punitive to the responsible fliers whilst having little effect on the idiot-droners.

It strikes me that the bureaucrats working on drone rules are more interested in "being seen to do something" rather than coming up with fair, reasonable, effective, workable solutions to the problem.

Let's remind ourselves of one very small but important fact when putting the drone issue into perspective:

Never, at any time, anywhere in the world, has a recreational multirotor drone been responsible for a single human death.

Compare that with other items which are not required to be registered and require no qualification to own or use but which have been responsible for countless deaths: knives, bats, bicycles, alcohol, tobacco, etc.

Surely there are much bigger problems worthy of the attention of regulators than some innocent RC model fliers?
