This is where you can say it was the libtards fault because that they locked the country into ongoing expensive infrastructure costs.

Assuming a fully loaded 384 port NBN node is to be upgraded from FTTN to FTTP, with 4 fibres already allocated to the FTTN DSLAM for connectivity back to the Fibre Access Node, 8 fibres are remaining to potentially deliver fibre services all the way to the customer’s premises.

However, the 8 fibres will only be capable of delivering GPON services (the FTTP technology that the NBN currently uses) to a maximum of 256 premises (each fibre can be split into 32 premises, 8 × 32 = 256).

Without causing massive disruption to all customers connected to the current node, it may not be possible to transition to FTTP on high-capacity nodes other than by rolling out the network from scratch again.

This means that even if nbn decides to upgrade the network, they will likely continue using copper-based technologies for the years ahead to avoid large capital costs again. Even if you consider that continuing with copper will cost 1Billion in electricity costs *alone* to run the crapper copper network over the next ten years.

Of course let us all forget that copper is unreliable in flood (because the capacitance of wet ground means it need more current to move data) and in fire in a country that is flood and bushfire prone. The stupid hurts me so much.

The problem is that what a quantum physicist refers to as a "wave function" does not directly relate to the EM waves themselves. What's being referred to is that the specific properties of a particle (location, momentum, time, etc) is not deterministic, but rather probabilistic. And when you plot this function, the result looks remarkably "wave-like" in that the probabilities are not continuous, but rather they have highs and lows, or peaks and troughs.

Enter Heisenburg and his "uncertainty principle." it holds true that you cannot know all properties of a particle until you measure them, but until you measure them ALL possible states are not only possible... but in fact the particle is *actually* in all possible states at the same time. It's only when you measure it, does the particle "choose" where it wants to be. This is called "collapsing" the wave function - of all the possibilities that it can be / is, it suddenly resolves to only one of those possibilities.

Where things get even more interesting, is that two particles can have a causal relationship in their states - that is, while they might both have wave functions, when once of the pair resolves where it is, the other of the pair resolves itself as well to match it... even though no communication occurs between them. the second particle might never have been measured, and yet it's wave function still collapses when you measure the first particle. This is known as "quantum entanglement," or what Einstein famously referred to as "spooky action at a distance" because it happens faster then "c".

According to Steve Jones, a distinguished professor of communications at University of Illinois at Chicago, the absence of digital booklets can be attributed to two things. First, given all of the different platforms on which people consume digital music, juggling the different template standards for each can be cumbersome. Second, people aren’t looking at digital booklets because we aren’t listening to albums like we used to. “You don’t bring it home in a container and listen to it and look at the sleeve, read the liner notes, et cetera,” said Jones. “You buy your music or stream it instantaneously, usually while you’re doing something else. The space in which one would have looked at the visuals has gone by the wayside.”

I think these are good points, but there are a couple of other things we can point to. For one, the any creative effort or marketing money that would have gone into making booklets has most likely moved to crafting a social networking presence. Social networking is probably a more obvious method for connecting with fans and sharing information.

However, I would guess that part of the problem is that early attempts at digital booklets were so poorly executed that it has poisoned the well. I remember a time shortly before MP3s really took off, and they had started putting this kind of information on a data section of the music CD. That is, if you bought a music CD and put it into a computer, it would show up as a data CD with a terrible Flash application that would auto-play. The apps were poorly thought-out, annoying, and often didn't even include the information that would be in the liner notes (e.g. lyrics). It often seemed like the booklets were only put in there so that the disc would be recognized as a data disc, making it harder to rip the disc and convert them to MP3s. (This was when the record industry was trying to prevent MP3s from becoming mainstream, arguing that it was illegal to rip CDs.)

Over the years, I've only seen one attempt at this sort of thing that didn't seem horribly designed and stupid. A few years back, there was an iOS app for Bob Dylan that was meant to accompany a recently released anthology. It came with some free information, and then for each Bob Dylan album it detected on your device, it would unlock information about that album (or something like that). I don't think it's even available anymore, but I found a video of it.

It wasn't perfect. The interface was still a little wonky in places, and it wasn't in some kind of universal format that you could view on any device. However, it was clear that someone had put in the effort to collect a bunch of photos and information, including various interviews and new content created for the app. They'd at least made an attempt to make an interesting design, and have it somehow connect with the music (e.g. you could listen to the music and it would show you the lyrics currently being played). At the very least, it was interesting enough, and had good enough content, that a fan might find it worthwhile enough to spend some time exploring. I haven't seen anything before or since that seemed like the people who made it had any interest in making it good.

Oh get off your high horse. We had a ransomware infect one user and then their network drives last fall. We stopped it within 20 minutes but still the damage was done with 40% of their network drive encrypted. The virus scanner (sophos) didnt catch it, email virus scanner missed it too. Was hand targeted for this one particular employee.

She unfortunately had access to a drive she shouldnt have as well so the attack spread farther than it should have.
We restored from backup and wiped the machine, but it was certainly inconvenient for a few hours for everyone in that department who lost access to their files.

The point is that this can happen to anyone so dont get cocky. Every user has write access to SOME files on the network, that is unavoidable.

I liked this video i saw at a cisco presentation a few weeks back. In theory a good IDS system with integrated agents on the machine and a "nex gen" firewall should halt an attack quickly. But thats a lot of money that many companies won't invest in till its too late.

Also, how operators almost lost Glen Canyon dam from some bad policy decisions is pretty interesting due to the insights into spillway cavitation and what you can glean from what is going on over at Orville dam.
