I must admit that I’ve been having this debate with myself for a while. Basically, I do feel like, at times, I spend too much of my free time playing “apps”, browsing Slashdot... all the things having a smartphone or tablet make trivial to access on a whim. But have I done anything about it? No, not really... at least yet.

There are certain things I really would not want to be without. GPS-based live maps have been mentioned already. There’s also the calendar - smartphone calendars are superior, by far, to the old “syncs your flip phone with your computer” version (although that was still handy). And it’s nice having immediate access to my contacts... well, flip phones more or less did that too.

I’d probably add playing music to the list as well, since I had an iPod (and, before that, some Creative player) back in the flip phone days. But music is often a background thing - it doesn’t have to be all-engrossing. I like to have music going when I’m doing dishes or cooking, for instance.

I'm pretty sure their license allows them to distribute people's videos (necessary for YouTube to function). It does not allow them to edit then redistribute the edited video. That's a copyright violation.

Why guess when it takes only a minute or two to actually read the terms of the license? Here's the relevant provision (my emphasis):

It may well have been a bad business move, but it seems to me that "displaying/performing" a "derivative work" of the video in question "though any media channel" fits squarely within their rights under the license.

People that use these services like YouTube or Facebook seem to forget that any content of theirs, whether their own produced vids or posted family photos, are no longer exclusively their own property anymore. The TL;DW (didn't watch, it's youtube after all) is that the World Bank set an arbitrary definition of "poverty" ($1/day or so) and then periodically changes the numbers to make it seem like folks are lifting out of poverty (now it's $1.06/day and a million more are making $1.08/day, congrats, 1 million "lifted out of poverty").

I guess it depends on how you define pattern matching.

That is a good point. To me, what a single neuron or collection of neurons does is pattern matching, in the sense that the output of a neuron or collection thereof can be regarded as identifying a certain (abstracted, meaningful) pattern within the universe.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to me are definitely showing signs of that. Just look at Nvidia's latest stuff:

The difference between us and apes in intelligence is huge, but in terms of biological evolution and makeup we're not that far apart. Finding the differences between the brain of a bonobo and a human is pretty hard. If there is a 'special sauce' to intelligence, it must be a fairly small (yet very significant) variation on the theme of the chimp biological neural network.

I'm not sure where I'd put current artificial neural networks exactly on an analogous evolutionary scale, but I'd say we are past invertebrate and into insect levels of potency (although perhaps not complexity just yet). Consider advances in science like this:
