Re:Not just surplus
Be careful with EEVBlog if you have kids. Some of the language is... "unfortunate", and I don't mean swearing (although there is some of that too). Check out some of the HAM channels instead, there is a lot more practical and SFW/safe for kids stuff on them:

Re:Killled by wet roads?
Eh, everyone is a perfectly competent driver until right before a crash. To demand not only perfect identification of road conditions (you've never been taken by surprised by a patch of black ice?), but near perfect responses to vehicle dynamics isn't realistic regardless of exemplary or poor driving skills. Even race car drivers still crash.
Adding to the information a driver has beyond autonomous cars can only be a good thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
One of the things that struck me in the vid is the relative speed of the cars that crash to the cars that proceed safely isn't that much. Way too easy to misjudge.

Some things never change. IMO Microsoft is very hostile but maybe it's good that they're polarizing people like this. I know a few grandma/grandpa types ditching MS and PCs over Win 8.x and 10 so that makes me feel good. I'm so grateful open software survives to this day even if it lacks in a lot of ways.
There's some times when it's better to walk away. Like the adblock wars. I stopped going to some sites that were making it through the adblock filter. I can find somewhere else to go and something else to do.

Re:To higher ground?
Probably by using an ocean-going dredging machine that shoots the material up onto the beach and then use that. At least for the time being. Or we'll just move 'em. It's not like we're gonna just let 'em drown or anything.
I do suspect that moving will be the answer. My own not terribly precise calculations lead me to believe that we have already stored a lot of energy in the atmosphere, and it's taken a long way to ramp up, and likewise will take a long time to ramp down. So those islands are goners
Anyhow, per your tire burning comment above. Err... Are you saying that I should stop that? 'Cause, man, smelly soot and ruined clothing and coughing fits are what I live for!!! Seriously, even way back in my youth, I never understood why some idiot would throw a tire on a fire. I've seen it done but, frankly, why??? It's not even that spectacular.
I also went out "cow tipping" as a youth. As near as I can tell, you can't really tip a cow over very easily. The tire burning and cow tipping are about as interesting as snipe hunting. I don't see the attraction.
Now if ya wanna see something interesting, burning an old Volkswagen engine block is tons better than a tire. maybe more eco friendly. Certainly pretty bright. And never pour water on a metal fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
related to cow tipping, friends and I used to have a trick with deer spotting. Shine a bright light on them, they freeze, and we see how close we can get by walking up to them. We stopped when we nearly got sliced by their hooves. But I was young and foolish then, I'm old and foolish now.

Re:Read Piaget and fix the faulty thinking process
To the best of my knowledge, there is no equivalent of the golden rule in Islam. There are moral obligations, but only to your co-religionists. As for critical thinking, that's considered a crime in most of the ME nowadays:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...Quoting Socrates at a muslim fundamentalist, as if he would accept his authority, is pointless. As you rightly point out yourself, he's from the Time of Ignorance (Jahiliyya). If the fundamentalists had their way, anything from that time would be destroyed. Not just books, but tombs, statues and monuments as well, heck, even the pyramids. IS has pledged to destroy the holy sites in Saudi Arabia.
The type of logic commonly used in muslim theology is reasoning by analogy, not syllogism. Even if you were able to corner a fundi with the Socratic method he'd simply say "you speak like a snake," and probably punch you in the face as well. It's how they're raised, dogma is literally bashed in to them. The average madrassa's curriculum is a brainwashing program, endless recitation while rocking back and forth, memorization of the entire Quran (phoneticallly if you don't speak Arabic). Kids are sometimes beaten to death for getting a surah wrong. Quoting their own scripture at fundis (or even regular muslims) in person is just downright dangerous. If you do it online they'll tell you that the true meaning is lost in translation, that interpretation requires deep knowledge of Islam etc. They'll quote some authority who came up with an interpretation that suits their purpose.
PS If you feel the need to engage in such discussions online, protect your anonymity. I'm not even joking, it's dangerous. It probably doesn't make the news in the US, but people get killed over this in the muslim world on a daily basis. If somebody publicly accuses you of being an apostate (kaffir, murtad), that's a death sentence, Rushdie was by no means an isolated case.

Spring-loaded lancets?
What about spring-loaded lancets? They use a similar principle - a thin metallic spike is launched by a spring, pierces the skin and then it's retracted by the spring back into its sheaf. It's nearly painless and much less scary than a regular lancet. See here for a demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re:So we're not going to over-react this time, rig
Or do you really want me to believe that for over 200 years Islamic people have had little beef with the US, but over the course of the last 30 have developed a hard-on of epic proportions.
And it was just out of nowhere, and not reactionary to US foreign policy.Did you know U.S. inteventionist foreign policy began as a reaction to Muslim acts against the U.S.? You've probably heard the opening line of the Marine Corps hymn:
From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli...
The Montezuma part makes sense. The U.S. fought several wars with Mexico, so of course the Marines would be involved. But Tripoli? That's way over in Africa. What the hell were U.S. Marines doing there?
Funny you should ask. Way back around 1800 when the U.S. was a freshly minted nation, it ran into a problem. Prior to the revolution, the U.S. was a British colony, and thus fell under the protection of the British navy. When the U.S. gained independence, it lost that protection. The Muslim Barbary States decided to take advantage of the situation and began capturing U.S. merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom. Their thinking was that since these people weren't Muslim, there was no moral problem with kidnapping them and extorting a ransom.
The fledgling U.S. was deeply in debt and had its own domestic problems. The last thing it wanted to do was to meddle with things going on in other countries. But it didn't have a navy which could deal with the situation (it had been decommissioned after the Revolutionary War to save money), and attempts to negotiate a treaty with France to protect U.S. vessels fell through. So for the first few years, the U.S. just paid the ransom. Of course paying kidnappers just encourages them, and it became open season on U.S. flagged vessels. Eventually the payments became exorbitant (over 1/6th of the Federal government's total budget), and the U.S. recommissioned a navy (the USS Constitution on display in Boston was one of these first ships). President Thomas Jefferson (y'know, the guy who wrote famous things like, "We hold these truths to be self evident - that all men are created equal") launched a military operation to Africa to end the kidnappings and free the hostages.
And that is how the U.S. Marines ended up in Tripoli. That is how the permanent U.S. Navy was born. That is how U.S. meddling with foreign nations began. Because a bunch of Muslims decided to take advantage of a fledgling non-Muslim nation which wanted little to nothing to do with what was going on in the Eastern hemisphere, by kidnapping its citizens and extorting a ransom for their safe return. So if you want to play the blame game, the first incident, the precipitating act which began over two centuries of animosity and set the U.S. on a course for meddling with countries halfway around the world, was actually committed by Muslims against the U.S. -

1. You're throwing the baby out with the bath water.
2. This sets a precedent down a dangerous slippery slope -- _who_ determines _what_ is acceptable or not?

Re:Missing a target with a laser weapon
> For that matter why didn't the exhaust port have a force field, or even a grating over it to deflect bombs?
I used to joke about that with friends, eavesdropping on the guys who designed it:
"Hey, that port leads straight to the main reactor. Shouldn't we shield it?"
"Aw, ray shielding's good enough. It's not like they're going to get close enough to use proton torpedoes, is it??"Then there's Family Guy's take on it
"This station is now the ultimate power in the universe!"
"That is fantastic, terrific work! So no weaknesses at all, right?"
"N... no."
"You, uh... you hesitated there. Is there something I should know...?"

Re:Playing catch-up
It's a pretty car. Unfortunately, the projected specifications of the Mission E indicate lower performance than the cars Tesla are making today.
So are almost all of the vehicles running Petrofuel. It probably isn't even a good idea to put that much performance in the hands of some drivers.
The only real advantage promised is faster charging -- from a network of high-voltage charging stations that don't exist yet.
Good luck with that.
Do you really think it is some sort of impossibility to put relatively simple Electrical charging systems in at a lot of places? and impossible to do it quickly? The infrastructure argument is possibly the worst argument against EV's.
It totally discounts the huge infrastructure needed to simply drill, pump, pipeline, refine, ship to storage, repump to trucks, deliver to retail facilities, pump, store and monitor the tanks, pump into cars, drive
Although I must admit that oil puts on a much better show when it mostly destroys towns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?... Stupid electricity mostly vaporizes squirrells at substations.

Re:Too much hype about driverless cars
I suspect that partially interactive and/or assistive technologies will be deployed first.
This has ALREADY HAPPENED. Tesla Autopilot is available to consumers, and does 80% of what you would expect a self-driving car to do.
Here is a video of some idiot who climbed in the backseat while his Tesla was driving on a busy freeway. -

Re:Logic versus programming
Sure and how would that teaching be applied in a fashion that doesn't discourage people wanting to learn programming, which was the thrust of my question.
I've found that there are huge numbers of people who are incapable of logic. That might also speak to the topic of the story.
Monty Python's Witch skit from The holy grail saams ot be the level of logic maybe half of us are capable of...

Re:Famous last words of granting emergency powers
More of the quote:
While the Government might promise that it would not prosecute an individual for checking Facebook at work, we are not at liberty to take prosecutors at their word in such matters. A court should not uphold a highly problematic interpretation of a statute merely because the Government promises to use it responsibly.
Pay attention the next time your senator or congresswoman or Attorney General or CIA head or ex head or President says, "Come on, Shelley. Give it a rest. We aren't going to abuse it."

Re:No worries
I think OpenSSL might be a special case here. By an odd coincidence I was watching the OpenBSD devs talks on LibreSSL yesterday and they actually covered backporting fixes from OpenSSL.
http://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2014-libressl.html - See the section title "apply the brakes". (for those interested, the slides here are from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFMYeMNCcSY)
My overall impression is that the OpenSSL developers don't really make peoples lives easy when it comes to backporting security fixes because they'll be bundled with a heap of other, poorly tested crap at the same time. This isn't helped by the quality of their code.

Re:I don't think...
Well, no; atheist means "not theistic," and theism includes belief in any or all possible gods. You don't get to "100% atheism" by process of elimination.
But in the spirit of "which gods do you believe in," I got a kick out of this:

Re:Are they absolutely nuts???
This was already proposed, but the person in charge of implementing it misunderstood the specification and released cougars of another type into the financial district. Many of them did in fact qualify as man-eating as well, but the experiment was still deemed to be a failure.
