Back in 1986, there was a hit song, "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades", by Timbuk3
In 1990, there was "I'm Free" by the Soupdragons.

Decidedly hopeful songs about the future.

In 2016, the song "Stressed Out" by 21 Pilots was a radio hit.
In 2013, the song "Royals" by Lorde was a radio hit.

Much darker outlooks about the present and the future.

Economists are looking for easy answers. I always chuckle when Krugman goes to his IS-LM graphs and equations, and I think, "You really believe those describe the entire system?" The reality is simple yet difficult and chaotic. Unless you're creating things that people value, like Germany for example, you're not going to have an improving standard of living. But economists can't control that - politicians do. And there's a chaotic element about whether your population will be able to create things that improve the standard of living. Economists can only print money and inject it into the financial sector and government, and hope it has a beneficial effect on the economy. But it doesn't. The economy grows around those sources of money, which aren't geared towards addressing people's needs and wants. They wonder why productivity hasn't improved.

I saw a really interesting debate between David Frum and Steve Bannon ("The Munk Debates" series) about whether populism is the future. Frum was arguing for the old, happy talk globalist (37 genders, open borders and the US as the world policeman) system which held sway till about 2008. Bannon said the future belonged to populism, and the only question is whether it will socialist populism (Bernie Sanders), or capitalist populism (Trump).

Capitalism with controls was good because it was self-sustaining and self-organizing. The value you provided was in line with the remuneration you obtained, with minimal interference by political gatekeepers, who can be easily corrupted. But as the production of value becomes more and more consolidated, as the production of value is off-shored, and money corrupts/warps our political system, gatekeepers have grown in power (via crony capitalism and socialism for the wealthy) and they are not like AI's - they are highly influence-able and corruptible. As in any system where a gatekeeper hands out largesse.

I think going forward, there's a strong push towards socialist populism. Unless we can come up with a system that is again self-sustaining and self-organizing that allows people to create value and which fairly pays people for their labor. The view is dimming for the latter.

Neither of these problems, service or content distribution, are nearly as complex as people like to make them out to be. It is a masquerade to maximize profits. That's all fine, but we don't have to play along. We just have to be more active in the rule making process.

Off topic, but the same idea, of adversarial images, has been turned into a kind of imagination machine in 2014 by Ian Goodfellow (Generative Adversarial Networks - GANs). https://scholar.google.ro/scho... . (5600 papers!) They train two neural nets engaged in a game of forgery and forgery detection. The generator net takes in a random noise vector and creates an image. The discriminator network takes in the fake image, other times real images, and has to say which is which. This makes the discriminator learn about images, and using backprop, it trains the generator to generate better fakes. There are various AV1 demos you can try in Chrome and Firefox. I'm using Firefox 64 beta with "media.av1.enabled" set to true in about:config. Bitmovin has a demo.

You can switch on AV1 for YouTube via their TestTube page and try some high bitrate videos in their AV1 demo playlist. Many YouTube videos have AV1 encodes available up to 720p resolution (try popular music videos to see examples), but YouTube's not optimizing for file size yet. The standard definition AV1 encodes typically have smaller file sizes than the VP9 equivalents, but the 720p AV1 encodes are typically of similar or even larger file sizes than the VP9 versions.

For any who doubt the truth of this, go read this amazing true story of an SJW on Quillette. Entitled "I Was the Mob Until the Mob Came for Me". It's an amazing insight on what it's like to be an SJW and why their culture is thriving at Google right now.

In my previous life, I was a self-righteous social justice crusader. I would use my mid-sized Twitter and Facebook platforms to signal my wokeness on topics such as LGBT rights, rape culture, and racial injustice. Many of the opinions I held then are still opinions that I hold today. But I now realize that my social-media hyperactivity was, in reality, doing more harm than good.
Within the world created by the various apps I used, I got plenty of shares and retweets. But this masked how ineffective I had become outside, in the real world. The only causes I was actually contributing to were the causes of mobbing and public shaming. Real change does not stem from these tactics. They only cause division, alienation, and bitterness.
How did I become that person? It happened because it was exhilarating. Every time I would call someone racist or sexist, I would get a rush. That rush would then be reaffirmed and sustained by the stars, hearts, and thumbs-up that constitute the nickels and dimes of social media validation. The people giving me these stars, hearts, and thumbs-up were engaging in their own cynical game: A fear of being targeted by the mob induces us to signal publicly that we are part of it.
Then one day, suddenly, I was accused of some of the very transgressions Iâ(TM)d called out in others. I was guilty, of course: Thereâ(TM)s no such thing as due process in this world. And once judgment has been rendered against you, the mob starts combing through your past, looking for similar transgressions that might have been missed at the time. I was now told that Iâ(TM)d been creating a toxic environment for years at my workplace; that Iâ(TM)d been making the space around me unsafe through microaggressions and macroaggressions alike.
I mobbed and shamed people for incidents that became front page news. But when they were vindicated or exonerated by some real-world investigation, it was treated as a footnote by my online community. If someone survives a social justice callout, it simply means that the mob has moved on to someone new. No one ever apologizes for a false accusation, and everyone has a selective memory regarding what theyâ(TM)ve done.

With a capacity of roughly 0.5GW per reactor, you need 12,000 new reactors. Good luck finding places for only a fraction of them in the US. But I guess I made somewhere a mistake, so feel free to divide it by a factor of 10 :P
