Re:I should add
I think you're right generally, in that the money-out is one of the biggest problems, but I think your targets might be misplaced. Malpractise isn't a significant cost, neither is salary compared with what would be expected - the biggest cost is down to the separately privately run businesses that run the healthcare, that all make their cut, and can't negotiate collectively to get the best price.

Re:So what if they don't catch fraud?
It would seem that Facebook developed these 'transparency tools' for a purpose. If that was to ensure greater transparency, well, they are in the business of enforcing something, just not law. If not, well, was this an exercise in avoiding criticism and responsibility?
The purpose was to avoid further government scrutiny. The situation kind of reminds me of this old Simpsons bit.

James Webb was assembled on Earth
Bad place to assemble a space telescope. Letting politicians fondle the critical components was stupid. Many of the difficulties were political, not technological. Those aren't optical mirrors, materials and wavelength matter.
You're much better off making the mirrors in space. It's not hard, as virtually all the technology being used to make large mirrors try to simulate the conditions of space.
There is life even in deep Antarctica. Unless you can show David Attenborough conclusively showing no life there, there's life there.
Her singing is NOT robotic, thank you.

Re:Build a thirty meter telescope in space
A technical heads up. Not only are ground based telescopes many magnitudes cheaper than space based ones (and offer the ability to combine to synthesize larger aperture) they have actually overtaken Hubble in their individual resolution. Agreed the atmosphere prevents wide band infra red capability which is why the next space telescope the James Webb is an infrared telescope. The technical advance which has led to the giant leap in ground based telescope capability is adaptive optics. This uses a laser pointing star and a deformable mirror to eliminate atmospheric turbulence on the largest and best located ground telescopes. See this great lecture from yesterday for example on the state of the art from The Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series by Dr. Claire Max (University of California Observatories)

shit right about now. Now, Fox & Co are propagandists, so I don't expect even a tiny bit of consistency from them. But I expect a little better from the right wing. There was zero outrage when Trump praised Chinese President Xi for seizing power for life and suggested he'd like to do the same. Again, imagine the shit storm if Obama had done that.
Somebody raised a very good point today. Trump pulled back the FBI from investigating right wing domestic terrorists. We just had a synagogue shot up and a pipe bomber. That is not a coinki-dink. The president responded to this by tweeting about baseball and saying he thought he might miss his rally.... because he was having a bad hair day. That's not "Trump being Trump". That's Trump signaling to the far right that violence is OK.

Re:2.92 years
How ridiculous! If I am going to sink $600 - $1000 into a phone, I wan't the damn thing to last a DECADE at least.
This is one of the (many) reasons why I use a dumbphone (for which I paid 30 bucks).
Here is a concise documentary on the subject.
You could always buy a decent smartphone and keep it for a decade, if you really wanted.
People want the new features, so they upgrade. If you don't (which is obvious by your dumb phone comment) then just use the old smartphone. The reality is that people use their phone for turn by turn navigation, as a ticket to board their flight, as a decent camera, and all the other things you use your dumb phone for.
You really can't compare a dumb phone to a smart phone much anymore.

Re:And as usual
Rattlesnakes are fine if you have the sense to leave them alone. They have a rattle *to warn you off*. They don't want to inject you with venom, any more than you want to get up and run ten kilometers. You're about 3.5x as likely to be killed by a dog as you are by all venomous snakes combined.
As for mosquitoes, don't get your hopes up. One female can lay 100-500 eggs depending on species every three days; under the right conditions those eggs can reach sexual maturity in about ten days. That means, in theory, that missing a single gravid female in your pre-summer eradication efforts can lead to over a million trillion descendants by the end of a 13 week summer. While in practice no single mosquito is likely to be *that* reproductively successful, in practice you're always going to miss a lot more than just one.
This combination of short reproductive cycles and large brood sizes is characteristic of a "weedy" species. In a stable ecosystem, weedy species are kept in check by species with more specific adaptation to local conditions, but when you disrupt an ecosystem, it tilts the competitive balance towards species whose ecological niche is rapid colonization of unstable habitats.
Life always finds a way, but it doesn't mean it'll be a way we as humans will find pleasant. A world in which we don't constrain our disruptive activities will have plenty of life, but it'll be algal blooms rather than salmon runs; poison ivy and sumac rather than chestnut trees. A world of mouse plagues, poison ivy and mosquitoes.

Re:Um... that's not what makde American a powerhouThat narrative is incorrect. Our elites deliberately harmed our working class in order to make other countries rich. NAFTA was the nail in the coffin of our little people. Zeihan explains why America does what it does. A great watch. Answers so many questions. A short quote:
They only beat us on trade the past few decades because we let them. We're not letting them any more. Globalization is over. Free trade is over. The rest of the world riding on America's back is over. Atlas is shrugging. And to any Europeans here, I'm not trying to be mean, I don't have anything against you. But you can't expect a free ride to last forever. And you guys really, really shouldn't have stopped having kids. Once your boomer equivalents retire and you don't have the tax base to pay for their benefits or the young consumers to drive the economy, you're looking at decades of stagnation, spending cuts, and tax increases. Incidentally, this is why the EU is importing migrants as fast as they possibly can. Gotta have someone to put on the bottom to keep the pyramid scheme going just a little while longer.

Re:Fire them all
This is not true. Assuming that distribution of desired skillsets is the same for women and men (something which is evidently not true as men's curve for instance for IQ has significantly bigger tails) ignoring the skillset parameter and concentrating on gender parameter for instance (or skin or some other skillset unrelated one) you will have random chance of getting the best out of pool of candidates. Taking the real distribution of desired skillsets into consideration this will change decreasing the probability of a good choice but not eliminating it completely. In the long run you will decrease your chances assuming that the skillset choice and examination is possible and they have a direct influence on the outcome desired by hiring company.
As the discussion involving use of facts may increase a chance of being fired (see here) I do not think this can be determined or used as a policy. However one can get onto the statistics for outcomes. I would imagine they may be available at some point showing how a hiring policy in which major ingredient or condition is SJ influences an outcome. It may be difficult to find a body of data for comparison tho as equality of outcomes seems to be a legal requirement in many countries in the West these days.

#MeTooHonestToGod mega clawback
Google gave Rubin a reported $90 million exit package in 2014, following an investigation into an allegation that he had coerced another employee to perform oral sex on him. That investigation reportedly found that allegation to be credible.
If you write it into every Google employment contract that compensation can withheld (to the tune of tens of millions of dollars) the quiet, little internal "investigation" now becomes a matter of civil tort, and all the parties involved (including the women who filed the original complaint) risk being hauled into open court, where the standards of evidence are much, much starker than #MeTooHonestToGod "women mostly tell the truth about these things".
So you can have the quiet, internal investigation which results in people losing their employment (in an at-will employment environment, this is hard to litigate), but not their compensation (in law, property is the giant bull's-eye cake, and all the rest is merely icing); or, all the women of Google can form a giant support group to collectively get their courtroom Anita Hill on.
Andy Rubin already lives in a world where his name will summon up allegations of sexual misdeeds for all time.
Unlike many overpaid executives, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised that Andy Rubin delivered immense corporate value for that giant pay packet.
These women know they can't successfully sue Rubin in civil court (their largely anecdotal evidence is insufficient for that venue), or they would take their grievance there, and profit immensely.
So now they are trying to intimidate their employer, Google, to extract a huge financial penance on scant documentary evidence, in a ratio that no court in America would countenance.
I've seen this drama before.
Why the Stanford Judge Gave Brock Turner Six Months — 17 June 2016
Ana Kasparian: Stanford Rapist Barely Punished — 6 June 2016
Seriously, Ana Kasparian thinks that Brock Turner was "barely punished".
Actual outcome: Instantly demoted from a Stanford golden child, to a lifelong felon, having served a big chunk of actual jail time (six months in the slammer in the pink petticoat for a socially maladapted Stanford nerd is not small change), whose given name is now synonymous with "dumpster rape" on the Internet for all time, and is barely employable, anywhere, ever (except on false pretenses where he dishonestly conceals his sordid history) because the social media wrath of the Sorority Sisters against any "clean slate" employer who ever associates with this person for all time would be too vituperative to even contemplate. All this for an act committed as a socially mindless young male not yet brutally familiar with neither alcohol nor women.
That's a whole new definition of "barely punished" that would make a cross-dressing Spanish Inquisitor cackle with glee.
Women who complain about their PMS affecting their mood and behaviour have no freaking clue about the brain-cramping rampage of peak TSB in a young man's late teenage years.
We've known ever since Robert Trivers first wagged around the magic, sexual-emotion clue stick that the chips in male evolution are stacked far higher, and far narrower than for women, and thus it only stands to reason that the hormonal ravages are correspondingly more intense.
Every woman who has ever said "my eyes are up here" to a man under the age of twenty-five has noticed this herself, without bothering her pretty head to write down and solve the underlying reproductive equation.
[*] TSB = toxic sperm build-up
We get it. We're about 3000 years overdue for a sea change on society's general tolerance of sexual misbehaviour (which is predominantly, but not exclusively, a male crime).
The attitudes must change.

Got a riddle for you
In a corporatist system of government, corporate censorship is state censorship. When there's no meaningful space between corporate power and government power, it doesn't make much difference whether the guy silencing your dissent is Mark Zuckerberg or Jeff Sessions. America most definitely has such a system.
That entire paragraph is plagiarism.
And when independent candidates run for office and can't get their message out for being shadow banned, and the corporatist candidates are always the number one trending subject, you'll be there to finger wag for not bothering to set up their own world-class content distribution system first.
Any time you try to talk about how internet censorship threatens our ability to get the jackboot of oligarchy off our necks you'll always get some guy in your face who's read one Ayn Rand book and thinks he knows everything, saying things like âoeFacebook is a private company! It can do whatever it wants!â Is it now? Has not Facebook been inviting US government-funded groups to help regulate its operations, vowing on the Senate floor to do more to facilitate the interests of the US government, deleting accounts at the direction of the US and Israeli governments, and handing the guidance of its censorship behavior over to the Atlantic Council, which receives funding from the US government, the EU, NATO and Gulf states? How "private" is that? Facebook is a deeply government-entrenched corporation, and Facebook censorship is just what government censorship looks like in a corporatist system of government.
Well that sure looks familiar too.
What takes random paragraphs from internet sources based on key words, with a time span ranging in years, and cobbles them together to make forum posts?

Fun fact: you know who wrote the infamous false flag WMD memo that was used as justification to start the Iraq War? Robert S. Mueller III. Yup, the same one.
Video evidence of him lying to Congress. He gave the impression that the FBI, the trusted organization that would never lie, approved of the invasion as absolutely necessary. Here is the story of creimy the mountain and his royalties! It is like "long term revenue streams"
This story was inspired by cdreimer, the parent poster. The story was written by a visionary on cdreimer birth date.
The story of creimy the mountain explained:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...Creimy is a typical mountain who poses for postcards, living with his wife Ethel, a tree, between the cities of Rosamund and Gorman, California. The main features on his mountainous face are two large caves, resembling eyes, and a cliff for a jaw, which moves up and down when he talks, puffing up dust and boulders.

Burnin down shit ain't going to help nothin! Y'all burnin' down shit we need in our community. Take that shit to the suburbs. Burn that shit down! We need our shit! We need our weaves. I don't wear it. But we need it.

Re:That's not quite true
CNN? The Clinton News Network? The network that sees its role as not reporting the news, but biasing the world to its advantage? You serious? Saying CNN is unbiased is ludicrous and so easily disproven.
Here's CNN getting caught red-handed planting debate questions.
CNN cropped out the ISIS finger salute and Jihad scarf from the Fort Lauderdale attacker's picture.

CNN glorifying a killer for ratings: 30 second Video: Sheriff asks media not to report Oregon shooter's name, CNN ignores request and does it anyway, including publishing his social media comments. (Note: video was edited by uploader to censor CNN's publishing of the shooter's name)

You mean, like this?

Re:Run over the nazi
I'd mod you up for this if I could
...Can you imagine the raucous, fruit-throwing shouting match debates between citizens, discussing important issues during the foundation of western civilization, at Pnyx, while some citizen tried to conceal their identity with a hood and false voice?
I'd love to hear their laughter and derision, and watch the crows pick all the tossed lunches and partially rotten fruit off the ground in the aftermath.
American Politics is boring, and Americans tend to take themselves far too seriously. If you don't have the courage to put your own foot in your mouth and eat a bit of crow now and then, then just shut the fuck up and quit pretending not to be a lying shill.

If a car has enough AI to decide, it is a waste
If a car has enough AI to decide who lives or dies, then it's a waste of AI. Put the AI in some sort of chassis than can get in and out of a car, drive when asked, and do other useful things, like help me learn a foreign language and play the piano:

Re:It's not convenient
When you play a multiplayer game in VR it rarely feels like you're sitting in isolation. Even the most primitive of avatars animated and voiced by a real live human is incredibly authentic in VR.

Not should it be. Saying "Jaywalker" should be:
Adam Ruins Everything -- Why Jaywalking Is A Crime
Essentially, the whole thing is a car lobby smear campaign from the 20s ("jay" was a massive insult, back then), to prevent risking the ban of cars in cities due to them causing so many deaths.

They do, in fact, own it:

Re: Well ...
The words being literal synonyms is just the case for colloquial use. Scientific terminology, which we tend to use here on slashdot, is a lot more distinctive exactly because it tries to mitigate such confusion and conflation.
At any rate making statements like "just a theory" in the context with a scientific theory is either meant to be a joke (one popular example would be from the an episode of the show Futurama) or shows a profound lack of understanding what the scientific method is about. Poe's Law applies, so I can't be sure which it is. -
Yep. Here is what people actually want.

Re: Not surprised either; but for a different reas
Sounds like an old Yes, Prime Minister dialogue:
Sir Humphrey: With Trident we could obliterate the whole of Eastern Europe.
Jim Hacker: I don't want to obliterate the whole of Eastern Europe.
Sir Humphrey: It's a deterrent.
Jim Hacker: It's a bluff. I probably wouldn't use it.
Sir Humphrey: Yes, but they don't know that you probably wouldn't.
Jim Hacker: They probably do.
Sir Humphrey: Yes, they probably know that you probably wouldn't. But they can't certainly know.
Jim Hacker: They probably certainly know that I probably wouldn't.
Sir Humphrey: Yes, but even though they probably certainly know that you probably wouldn't, they don't certainly know that, although you probably wouldn't, there is no probability that you certainly would. -
