Interview With id Software's Robert A. Duffy
LEXI writes: "Accompanying our recent first set of Q3Radiant Tutorials I had the chance to interview one of the programmers behind the editor and the new engine, Mr. Robert A. Duffy of id software. 10 questions asked, 10 answers given. Topics range from personal details, education, job description, over to the new engine and the new tools, to violence in games and George W. Bush. The English original can be found here; the German translation resides at this very spot. The interview should be interesting for as well the quake player desperately awaiting the new engine, as the fresh or old-school mapper."
I got the mother fucking first post of goodness!

The entire premise that linux is 'revolutionary', and that it will somehow supplant the Beast of Redmond as the desktop OS of choice is entirely flawed. The linux craze was a creation by stock market speculators, brokerage houses, and venture capitalists. Their purpose was to pump up the valuations of certain linux-oriented corporations. When their valuations were sufficiently high they dumped their shares and made obscene profits.
The sad thing was the number of highly intelligent people who were swept up in this fraud. I have several friends, respected and published scientists, who put a lot of money in these stocks, and subsequently lost a lot of money. Now that H. Blodgett is being investigated for his role in some of these pump and dump schemes, I wonder how long it will be before the investigation reaches to the upper echelon's of today's linux-biz powerhouses.
Many of you are slow to wake up to this fact, wishing that it wasn't true only proves your culpability. The truth is obvious in light of these facts. Linux is a fraud. If we look back with an objective eye, it's quite plainly so. The moral high-ground linux once held has subsided beneath a festering swamp of corruption.
If you know someone who is still a linux advocate, and they have been made aware of these disheartening facts, please bitch slap them, because they should know better.
-----------------------
A great corporate move
Though the price of linux is cheap(free), its TCO(total cost of ownership) is among the highest in the industry. In light of this fact I can think of an excellent corporate move for VASoftare(LNUX). But time is short they must act before they burn through the remainder of their cash reserves. They should quit the linux business, because its the right thing to do. They could re-emerge as hot tub vendor. That's something that doesn't suck( linux sucks!
As far as I understand legislation in your country, it is part of the constitution that every american citizen is allowed to wear a gun. In my opinion that is one major reason for teenage high-school killings - while claiming games like "Doom" guilty is completely ridiculous. What is your opinion?
Are you kidding me? They get a chance to ask this guy 10 questions and this is what they come up with? Anyone do any research on this?
Slightly offtopic, but I was wondering how typical non-American's view Americans concerning the second amendment? Surely people don't think we're a bunch of cowboys shooting everything in sight ala Homer Simpson.
I will widen in honor of you!
Email me and tell me what you think of widening!
Klerk, I hate you.
That is all.
1. Smash it up
2. Rock tha house
OTOH, if this works for the IE-using script kiddiez that read /. maybe this is a good thing..
STFU
When I read this crap it just makes me want to go buy more guns.
We dont have the right to bear arms based on a need to hunt or to be protected from bandits (Stated Cowboys above). We have the right to bear arms for the purpose of overthrowing our government in the event it becomes something the violates the basic rights of man.
Try thinking rather then feeling.

Robert Duffy: Well wearing a gun and owning a gun are two very different things and neither of them have to do with any game in my opinion. The only countries I have ever seen citizens wearing guns are ones where it was illegal. I don't think to date I have seen a citizen wearing a firearm in public here in the US.
Riiiight. That's not a gun in my pocket, I'm just happy to see you.
In case of the Slashdot effect, here's the interview:
Interviewer: Boxers or briefs?
Robert Duffy: I'll have to keep my take on this to myself.
Interviewer: We would like to thank Robert Duffy for taking the time to answer our questions and wish both him and id software all the best for the future.
...oOOo..'(_)'..oOOo...
I always wondered what happened with Sergeant Duffy after his roles in Infocom's Witness and Deadline...
"There ought to be limits to freedom"
How do you manage to escape being banned? Is it because you have enough negative karma to post at -1 which somehow prevents banning (coz the posts are never moderated)?? My account keeps getting banned, maybe I need less karma, -7 at the moment.
Uh if this was a guy ruunning for president, the question makes sense....but to ask some programmer dude....
and besides everything the brats at Columbine did were already illegal.
Klerck is Taco.
Why was this even posted on slashdot?
id Employee's have always been good at keeping their mouths shut, and it often prevents them from looking like idiots.
Too many game companies shout out dates and features that they never meet or implement.
Gamers are cranky and stubborn, its best we don't hear anything until we can try it.
The german translation has a few interesting editorial replies.
I re-translated them:
10 What do you think about George Bush? Do you believe in God? What are your basic ethical values in every day social life?
Robert Duffy: He has done a great job under intense pressure. I am glad he is our president. Yes but not like most people probably do. I try to be a good moral human on a daily basis.
Editor's note: Americans are so stupid!! Haha!!!
Question 1
Mr. Duffy, to start off with: What does the "A" in Robert A. Duffy stand for, how old are you, when did you join id software and what does your job description say in terms of your duties within the company?
Robert Duffy: The fucking a motherfucking stands for Allen. Goddamned sons of bitches like you. I am 38 and I've been full time at id for about two and a half years and I did contract work for them bastards for about one and a goddamn half years before that. You will feel my burns. My juicy job description is "Programmer", I work on the fucking editor, tools, the fucking in-game gui systems and game code ( doors, security cameras, etc.. You are a pussy. about to get started on some effects for shits as well ). You are a pussy. I also (in addition to the fact that you're a shit) deal with our licensees most of the fucking time as far as code updates and shit and at times work on other shits as needed. I should slam your throat. I worked with Kevin [Cloud] on the fucking Wolf MP shit and did some work on Wolf towards the fucking end of the fucking project tidying some shit up.
Question 2
I'm sure a lot of enthusiastic gamers out there would like to know and follow in your footsteps: What kind of education did you go through and what other companies / projects did you work for before you got hired by id? What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Robert Duffy: I am self taught. Pop Quiz, why are you such a fuckhead? The fucking last 3 companies I was at before id I wrote code as well as managed the fucking development process. Jesus was right, you are a shithole. I was Director of Technology for a motherfucking company in Los Angeles just prior to coming to fuckin' id, co-founded a fuckin' net company back in the fucking early-mid nineties before that.. You are a pussy. etc..
A fighter pilot but my fucking vision rules.
Question 3
Who was around when you had your application interview and how did you feel when you entered the "holy hallways" of id software for the first time?
Robert Duffy: John [Carmack] sent my stupid ass an jizz saying them poo pirates wanted to hire my stupid ass full time. I went up and talked to fuckin' that piece of shit ( and I think Graeme [Devine] was there at the fucking time ) told that bastard I'd get back to that piece of shit in a fuckin' day or so god-damn and after discussing that piece of shit with my fucking wife went for that shit. I was first at id many years ago when DOOM was first shipping, we were looking to license technology for some shit at the fucking time.
More recently when I started contracting that piece of shit was a motherfucking GOOD impression but a goddamn bit intimidating.
Question 4
Violence in Gaming and its influence on teenagers is a huge topic worldwide. My opinion is that people who spend some time kicking butt in fast-paced shooters like Q3A will definitely not tend to aggressively kick butt out on the streets. What is your take?
Robert Duffy: I'll have to keep my goddamn take on this bullshit to myself.
Question 5
As far as I understand legislation in your country, it is part of the constitution that every american citizen is allowed to wear a gun. In my opinion that is one major reason for teenage high- school killings - while claiming games like "Doom" guilty is completely ridiculous. What is your opinion?
Robert Duffy: Well wearing a gun and owning a gun are two goddamn different shits and neither of them shits have to fuckin' do with any game in my goddamn opinion. The only fucking countries I have ever seen citizens wearing guns are ones where the fuck that piece of shit was illegal. You are a fuckmonster. I don't think to date I have seen a citizen wearing a fuckin' firearm in public here in the fucking US.
Question 6
Doom 3: Quoting John Carmack, for the new engine the editor will be part of the main game executable and called via a command line parameter. Will that make it possible for level designers to preview their maps without fully re-compiling each time? Will the 3D-Window within the editor finally be game-engine-powered? And what will this mean in terms of the editor's looks and usability in general?
Robert Duffy: Yes the fucking editor is built into the fucking game ( as are all the fucking tools ). You and your sluts can preview in realtime fuckin' what a level looks like. The fucking editor is much like Q3Radiant but with additional functionality.
Question 7
In your opinion, what is the biggest benefit community & professional level designers will face using the new tools / editor compared to what Q3Radiant does for them today?
Robert Duffy: Real time preview and integration will help a whole shitload.
Question 8 ;o) - when do you think a demo version of the new engine will be available: Late 2002, Early 2003 oder Late 2003?
How is development of the new engine and tools coming along? Are the new tools already in use by anyone, creating content for the new engine? In general - without giving "when it's done" statements
Robert Duffy: Things are going goddamn well.
Question 9 :o) - to give yourself three attributes without giving a damn about what other people might think about you - what would they be?
Robert Duffy: Hmmm.. I dunno, I'm fairly happy to live with myself as I am and deal with the fucking GOOD and "f'ing great" aspects of that ;-)
If you were - and you are now
Question 10
What do you think about George Bush? Do you believe in God? What are your basic ethical values in every day social life?
Robert Duffy: He has done a great job under intense pressure. I am glad he is our president. Yes but not like most people probably do. I try to fuckin' be a GOOD moral human on a fuckin' daily basis.
We would like to thank Robert Duffy for taking the time to answer our questions and wish both him and id software all the best for the future."
The future isn't what it used to be.
Well it's a good thing we didn't let the french generals have control over the strategry.
Or else we would have lost thanks to your stupid asses spreading out all the artillery instead of having it in a line.
Don't think that America would have stopped fighting if it wasn't for your French. We aren't pussies who run surrender once the odds are against us.
Cooking with Organic Goat Cheese Baked Goat Cheese with Arugala Salad & Tomato Dressing 1/2 cup Kalamata olives for garnish 3 bunches of arugala 1/2 cup of ricotta cheese 1 jar of Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese 1 large sprig of dill, chopped 1/2 cup pecans, finely chopped 1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs (whole wheat best) For Dressing: 1/2 cup DREW'S peppercorn & garlic dressing 1/2 cup fresh tomato sauce Dash of balsamic vinegar Blend dressing ingredients together until smooth. You can add some fresh herbs as well. This will perk up the flavor. This dish is great for an appetizer, and also great served with some roasted heads of garlic.Mix the goat cheese and ricotta cheese together with the dill until smoothMix the pecans and breadcrumbs together in a shallow pan and drop dollops (2 to 3 T.) of the cheese mixture on top with a spoon. Sprinkle the crumbs on top of that and gently roll into ballsPreheat oven to 400F. and bake the cheese on a lightly oiled sheetpan. To serve toss the arugala with a couple of T. of the dressing and, using a spatula, place a piece of the goat cheese on top of that. Garnish with some breadcrumbs and olives. Ready!!! Enjoy. Serves 4 Three Bean Dip Extravaganza 1/2 cup cooked black beans 1/2 cup cooked anasazi beans 1/2 cup cooked pinto beans (all of these beans should be Organic) 6 cloves of roasted garlic 1/2 yellow onion sautéed until soft 1/2 tsp cumin, 1 jar 505 salsa 1 chipotle pepper 1 tsp sea salt 1 bunch chopped cilantro 1 jar Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese 1/2 lb. Canadian cheddar, grated 3 rip tomatoes, chopped Well, here's the scoop, I actually cooked the beans altogether, with a couple cloves of garlic and the chipotle pepper, until soft. When these were cooked I drained some of the water off and mashed them with the cumin, sea salt, black pepper, cooked onion, and roasted garlic.Let them cool and start layering. On a nice platter or dish start with your beans, then top with the goat cheese, tomatoes, salsa, cheese and finally the cilantro.Serve with chips and crispy veggies.Enjoy! This will serve at least 8-10 people. YUM!Fresh Corn and Polenta 2 cups of dried polenta 5 cups of filtered water 1 tsp of sea salt 1/4 cup of sun dried tomatoes, finely chopped after being reconstituted 4 ears of corn removed from the cob 1 bunch of basil chiffonade (sliced) 4 T olive oil Serve with Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese. This is very simple. As you bring the water to a boil add the sea salt. When the water is boiling lower it to a simmer and add the polenta.Stir with a whip to make sure that this is well mixed so that the polenta gets completely distributed and cooked evenly. This will most likely take a good 1/2 hour. Continue stirring the polenta. While it is cooking get your tomatoes, corn and basil ready and add them. Now let this cook. Take a bit out of the pan and let it cool a minute or two. Taste it. It should be a bit loose, a bit creamy, and quite tasty. At this point you can serve it in a bowl or you can pour it into a greased cookie sheet to cool. It will be ready to grill or bake on another occaision.Delicious and simple, you can serve it with vegetables and Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese. Now enjoy this recipe which serves 6 to 8 people.Crisp Wild Rice Griddlecakes 1/2 cup wild rice 2 cups water 1 large egg 1/3 cup chopped fresh chives 2 T. oil Top with Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese Rinse rice in cold water. In saucepan bring 2 cups of water to a boil and stir in rice. Simmer uncovered until tender but grains are not open, about 40 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water and transfer to a bowl.Lightly beat egg and stir into rice with chives and salt and pepper to taste.Heat 1 T. oil in non-stick skillet. Drop heaping teaspoons of rice mixture into skillet flattening griddlecakes slightly with spatula. Cook until golden brown, about 1 1/2 minutes on each side.Drain on paper towels and season with salt and pepper. Top with Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese.Black Bean and Fresh Corn Enchiladas 5 ears of corn, cut off the cob 1 lb. firm tofu, crumbled 1 bunch of cilantro, chopped 4 T. canola oil 1/2 cup red chile powder 6 large cloves of garlic, chopped 1 T. cumin 6 small zuckinni, sliced 1 dozen blue corn tortillas 1 tsp. sea salt 1 T. chile pequin 1 jar of Coonridge Organic Goat Cheese 1/2 cup rice or wheat flour 2 cups black beans, cooked Preheat your oven to 350F. Make your red dhile auce by heating the canola oil and adding the cumin, red chile powder, garlic and sea salt. Let this cook for a couple of minutes. Then add the four and mix as a roux. This is to thicken the sauce. Now after another minute or so you can add approximately 1 quart of clean water and stir well. Use a whip to make sure this mixture is smooth. Let this cook on a medium heat for approximately 5 minutes.Steam or roast the zuchinni. It does not need to be completely cooked. When done add, in a medium sized bowl, the zuchinni, corn, tofu, cilantro, goat cheese, sea salt, black beans, and chile pequin. Mix well. Now you are ready to put this dish together.Start with a 13x9 inch roasting pan and lightly grease it. Add about 1 cup of the red chile sauce. Then layer 6 blue corn tortillas in the pan and top with the corn mixture. Top with the remaining blue corn tortillas and top those with about 2 cups of chile sauce. Any sauce you have left over you can use when serving this dish.Bake this now in the oven for 45 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes and serve. Yummy ready to eat! Perfect with a salad-lots of avocados and radishes. This serves 6 to 8 people. Enjoy!!!Baked Apricots with Goat Cheese and Pistachios 12 ripe apricots cut in half 1 jar Coonridge Organic Black Peppercorn Goat Cheese 1/2 cup of toasted pistachios chopped (not fine) 1/4 cup pecans toasted and chopped 1/4 cup of honey (you pick what kind to use) dash nutmeg juice from 2 lemons and 1 orange First thing to do is preheat your oven to 400F., as this is a simple process once you have your nuts and apricots ready.Next place the apricots pit side up in a pie plate and pour the lemon/orange over them. Then you actually just layer this dish.Next drizzle on the honey. Then put the cheese on equally over the apricots and then sprinkle on the nuts and the dash o' nutmeg. Now bake this dish for 20-30 minutes and remove it from the oven. It is your choice if you want it hot or warm.I think that it would be great to serve it with some cherries or raspberries for color and they certainly will compliment the dish. Enjoy.Depending on how hungry your folks are this is good for 3-4 people for dessert. Maybe serve it with a nice dessert wine. Scrumptious, enjoy.

And now some Grade-A tripe!
Grrrr!!! I AM SCUZZLEBUTT! Look in AWE at my Robert Duffy leg!
I have met quite a few US citizens and they were every bit as nice as the Europeans I know. I'm sure the same could have been said about Germans 1933 to 1945, of course (forget Godwin's Law, I am trying to make a point here).
As individuals, US Americans are not all that different from Europeans. In fact, from my personal experience, I couldn't tell whether they are more likely to be gun nuts, and they certainly didn't seem to be xenophobe.
But put a bunch of people together to form a nation, add some context (history, environment), and small differences you didn't notice before add up to something significant. It's not individuals. Nations and societies are different.
First and foremost, your French friends were blasting the US, not you. The funny thing is that most US citizens don't seem to understand this because they have no idea what their country looks like from the outside. Not a pretty sight. Of course you can argue that the foreign media have it all wrong, but that won't change a bit the way the US is perceived.
The way you describe how you enlightened those poor French folks about the true meaning of Liberty doesn't help much in changing that picture, either. If you think you can change what boils down to cultural heritage of a society just with reasoning, you're kidding yourself.
Death penalty, environmentalism, gun control, social standards, etc. have very little to do with reason. For each you can argue either way in good faith and with sensible arguments. Which way you're leaning is very likely the result of the society that raised you, not the product of your own deep thinking. It is hardly by chance that your opinions seem so neatly aligned with US mainstream.
So when they can't hack it at 'Teen Beat' anymore, really awful interviewers work for German game websites?
The Internet is generally stupid
Keep trolling until the bitchslap script is invoked. Then downmods won't count against your account and your home free.
Go next door to Switzerland bubba. 1 in 3 people there own a firearm (500,000 pistols and 600,000 semiautomatic rifles). Yet, the rate of violent crime in which guns are involved in that country of 6 million is so low, they don't even keep statistics.
[reference]
So, are we to conclude that merely the existance of a gun will lead to a shooting death? Or, would it not be more reasonable to assume that the attitudes a soceity has towards guns is at fault. Then, given the basic and fundamental fact that the government cannot, never has been, and never will be able to regulate a populations attitude, what sense does it make to legislate against guns?
That simple immutable fact, my friend, is why you are considered a typical eurotrash fucknut.
Dear Fellow Trolls,
I write this on behalf of The New True Troll Legion and our allies. If you've not yet allied yourself with The New True Troll Legion, there's no better time than the present: all your friends are doing it!
Take a look at this Kuro5hin fuckhead who claims/admits that he is Lockwood.
I was starting to strongly suspect it based on a number of his posts, such as that he lost his job on the exact same day Lockwood was fired from his for gross incompetence... he has similar political views to Lockwood... he uses the same insults, poor grammar, etc., and he has the same general asshole complex. He regularly moderates up the Geekizoid circle of shitflooders and spammers, such as Shoebot and TheGayLantern.
I was piecing together all this evidence to make a solid case that this fuckwit is Scott, but then one of the Associates pointed out to me that I didn't have to: he made a blatant fucking admission.
What can I say? GET HIM.
NEVER forget or forgive what Lockwood did. In 2000, he followed us from one hidden Sid to another harassing us: they'd stay secret for weeks or months until somebody messed up and posted logged in, and then Lockwood would be upon us again.
Finally we fled to the mailing list to get away from him, and he felt so shunned and rejected that he fell into a deep depression and, so the legend goes, tried to kill himself. When he awoke from his drug-induced coma, he tried to ingratiate himself with the trolls, but they still rejected him and wouldn't let him onto the mailing list. After another suicide attempt, Scott Lockwood decided to form his own band of "trolls" and you know the result: a forum devoted to shitflooding, spamming, homophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, denial-of-service attacks, and other abusive, illegal, childish stuff.
Everything that Lockwood has done will be repaid to him tenfold. For every forum he has spammed, his forum will be spammed ten times. For every life he has ruined, his own life and the lives of his friends will be ruined ten times over.
Scott Lockwood followed us from one hidden Slashdot sid to another to harass us, and now we have the chance to do the same to him: we will follow him from one Kuro5hin nickname to another to harass him; we will ALWAYS find out who he is, eventually, no matters how much he tries to hide it. The tables have turned, and we will hunt him to the end of the earth until he goes away forever. And if he never goes away, he will hunt him forever, and have fun doing it.
What can I say? GET HIM.
Speaking only for myself, this is the most fun I've had in years. Lockwood, leave the scene, get off the Internet, and get a life. Or keep it up... we'll keep it up too. We're more patient than you, we're more determined than you, and there are more of us than you. Give it up, keep it up... it's up to you.
Best Regards,
The New True Troll Legion
Maybe when the US government starts making certian races of people wear I don't know a star.
Or start talking about "the final solution" or
how about even when my grandma went away on vacation and never came back.
You said it best
"it's not like they would start mercilessly killing people at random, or ban elections."
Well what if they do?
It's not like it hasn't ever happend in other countries.
Except for The Somme, which is about to be paved for another airport for Paris. Nothing like paving over where a million soldiers died (no I'm not kidding, read the link).
This is off the top of my head, so I could be wrong...
The battle of the Somme was in 1916, no? Americans only entered the war in 1917. Therefore, those soldiers would be the 20,000 British killed there.
That explains a couple things.
If tits were wings it'd be flying around.
Exhibit A
Dude he wasn't talking about the Taliban Army.
He was talking about the Northen Alliance being a group of small armed soldier taking out the Taliban.
Sure American airstrikes helped. But the one huge thing that America did was to unite all the little tribes and direct their power.
Exhibit B
Just because you hear only about suicide bombings on your news channel dosen't mean that is all that is going on.
I don' know about you but even on CNN I hear stuff like "palestine gunmen kill 3 Israeli soliders"
etc. The suicide bombings just get more press.
Do you think the people in the Church of the Natvity are holding the place hostage with bombs?
You have no idea what you are talking about at all.
Oh and "All that requires is voting intelligently." what happens if they take our right to vote away? Or impose a tax on it?
Moron.
OK i'm drunk..
No. 1... no
2. That interview is so fucking lame..
no 3. i gave credit to the editors for posting good articles.. till now...
time to puff a bong.. almost makes me sorry i gave 5 bux to slashdot after this article..
No, he was talking about the Mujahadeen, the precursors to the Taliban. Many Mujahadeen members joined or assisted the Taliban afer they ousted the Russians (e.g Osama bin Laden).
Plus the massive numbers of Australians and New Zealanders who were sent in as shock troops by the British.
Who the hell are they? Unless we are conquered by external forces, (not likely) they are the ones we elect.
If we are sure to never elect the type of asshole who would take our right to vote away, we avoid this whole military confrontation crap in the first place. This kind of vigilance will be more effective at avoiding bad government than keeping your gun oiled.
...for the most unhelpful interview of all time!
Seriously, you'd think these guys would take the time to answer with something other than a one-liner for each question....
Relative to the rest of the western world, Americans have an astronomically high number of gun deaths each year. For 1998, there were 30,708 firearm-related deaths, 11,798 of which were homicides. And this was the lowest point of a 35 year downward trend.
To contrast, the United Kingdom, which has a population of around 60 million, had 49 firearm homicides in 1998. If you scale this to the US population of about 270 million in 1998, that would still only be 217 deaths. Given this, the US has roughly 50 times the firearm-related homicides of the UK.
So it's no wonder why the rest of the world thinks Americans are gun-toting cowboys... relative to them it rings true.
Just to provide balance, the United States doesn't have the highest homicide rate in the world, just of industrialized western nations. For example, Canada's homicide rate per 100,000 is about 2 in 1997, whereas the US is 7.2, yet Mexico is 14.6.
South Americans, on the other hand, enjoy an even higher homicide rate, ranging as high as 70 per 100,000 for Columbia in 1997. But Americans don't compare themselves to "third world" nations, only to G7 nations, really.

it is a bit different in switzerland. nearly all male sitizens have go to the army. when they are back home they keep their rifle (sig 550 nowadays) and some rounds of ammo. switzerland is small but neutral and they take their neutrality very seriously.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever" -- David St. Hubbins, Spinal Tap
If you (clever people) are not even able to do that with ICANN, how do you hope to be able to do that as a country filled by less-educated people who vote according to what they see on TV or with arguments like "my family has been democrat since 822 BC" or whether some dude screwed his secretary?
I really wonder...
Note that I'd wish it to be the case, but I have no trust in US citizen (as a whole) acting in a responsible way, as they don't seem to have done so since the revolution...
One shall speak only if what one has to say is more beautiful than silence
Huh?
Firstly I live in Switzerland, so don't quote bbc references to me, since I've mailed the bbc at least twice on faulty references they posted.
Secondly, what is this hatred of Europe thing that seems to be in vogue right now? Why is it that anytime someone asks a question about something that happens in the USA that all the insults start flying and some people who haven't ever been there start making death threats? Does this threaten your personal existence? Are you so fragile in your personality that you feel the need to respond with violence to everything?
Thirdly, carrying of pistols in Switzerland is illegal, concealed or not. You need a Waffenerwerbsschein (Weapon possesion certificate) to get a weapon privatly in Switzerland, and they do a very thorough background check before they give it to you.
Fourthly, Most of the military grade weapons in Swiss households are weapoons that swiss soldiers take home. In Switzerland soldiers have to shoot regularly at shooting stands and there is a compulsory three week military camp every year. Soldiers having their weapons with them is simply easier than having to hand it out to them every time they need it. BUT probably within the next two years the swiss will drop this and Military rifles will not be taken home any more.
Fifthly, you calling any European that has a different opinion to you Eurotrash is probably a compliment to him.
Yes, it's different but the difference has nothing to do with the type of weapon or the compulsary impressement of citizens into the military (something that is also a reality in Israel). Swiss neutrality (which is a nice front, but in reality the Swiss economically support those they cannot militarily or politically support, so spare me the rhetoric) doesn't have a bearing either. The fact that every swiss male is taught respect for and proper handling of firearms is the at the root of the lack of a gun problem in that country.
Actually, the dead are British, Canadian, New Zealanders, Australian, German, and French. So, any Americans would have been volunteers attached to the other armies.
A lot more than 20,000 British soldiers died there.
Deaths by country (no, the numbers don't add up, no I don't know why):Accounts list the total casualties (not deaths) at 1.25million men over 5 months. The death rate appears to be ~50%. Pretty important place to bulldoze so quickly.
Lest We Forget.
