Red Vs. Blue - A Halo Fan Flick
Universal Nerd writes "Red vs. Blue are the folks with a great sense of humor who gave us the Apple Switch spoof, Mac Gamer, a while ago. They're now releasing a new movie called The Blood Gulch Chronicles, a series of episodes created using in-game footage from Halo. Well worth a look and a laugh." The fifth and latest episode came out yesterday, and this is some of the best and funniest machinima I've seen in a long time. Update: 05/05 19:43 GMT by S : Here's a BitTorrent link, thanks to Gametab.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,
Vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun,
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'.
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
Seein' that he's chasing.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
There goes there servers.
It was Fark one week that killed their bandwidth now it is Slashdot.
That, my friends, is the sound of a server being well and truly arse raped
Subscription's nice but it looks like the server's about to be brutally annihilated (I got the first three eps). I do NOT want to be on the recieving end of these guys' bandwidth bill...
4 posts here on /. and it's already a smoldering wreck. Yeesh.
Come out john katz, we know it's you. So come be my latest ho!

Isn't that a gang related thing?
Like The Bloods against the Crips? They made a movie about that; Colors, I think it was....

How much do you have to dislike someone to put a 10 meg download link in the header of a /. article?

Some kindly folk at Fark have provided mirrors. Scroll down for links.

The only thing that takes time is apparently contacting the download server. I waited for about a full minute while it searched and searched and then the download popped up and maxed out my line...

This site is totally wanged. Anyone got a mirror? I'd love to watch these sometime, but it's always so overloaded...

Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.
Could somebody post torrent files so we can distribute the load?
People are gonna start gettin real annoyed from getting slashdotted. I think the /. guys really need to invest in just one server with quite a fat connection, put copies of all the files they link to on it, and run kaaa, gnutella, edonkey. eDonkey (eMule) would be better coz its easy to provide direct links to files. Sure this probably wouldnt help straight away, but it would only take a few minutes for the first few people to get their files, then there's instantly a load more sources. Obviously there are copyright issues in a lot of cases, but i'm pretty sure it'd be fine for something like this? anyway, as soon as i get the files downloaded i'll post eMule links
Everything sucks except musicandstuff
They could have uploaded it into Freenet and then posted a link to it there. You can link to all sorts of content that way - and the /. effect is reversed: The more hits it gets, the more available it becomes.
Soooo....
I just moved to an all Linux machine and have no Divx or Quicktime player... Any suggestions? I'd like to see these...

I don't play games really. I own a console but it is a Sega Genesis. I haven't pulled it out from under the t.v. in a long time.
/. The humor makes it fun for anybody. No need to be in on HALO or any of that.
All that to say I have really been enjoying this series. Thank god I got episode 5 before this got posted on
This is even better than the Matrix (Halo Remix).

It's hard to believe that's how Micronians are made. Why don't we see it right now by having you both kiss one another?
Does it? Nope. If you want something bold, or emphasized, or italic, you still need to specify that the text is bold, emphasized, or italic. Microsoft Word (or even KWrite) have nice buttons and menus that do that for you already.
Furthermore, printing with TeX is a task that would make Rube Goldberg proud. First you edit the
That's a lot of work for a quick memo. It makes Notepad seem advanced.
Unfortunately, TeX is based on 1950s era thought processes, where batch computing reigned supreme. Considering that my calculator has more processor power (and RAM!) than most 1950s computers, I think we should retire TeX for good.

Can you download the free divx codec and ad-aware out the spyware? I'm not interested in the spyware associated with the free version, I just want the raw codec.
I heard there's a Quicktime version available. How can one get that? (exact URL please)
Well there goes any hopes of fast DLs on the future eps. Good thing I got Ep5 yesterday :P

I remember anxiously waiting for the following week's series of panels on Detonate's Matrix bastardization... I absolutely roared with laughed on a few of them.

It's an interesting concept, and I'm sure some bright spark can actually make a basic TV series outta say, GTA 3 and The Hitman.
I've been following this since Episode 1, and it gets funnier with each iteration, as the series builds up - I only wish them epsiodes were longer.. :)

I keep getting "bad data from tracker" unless I take privoxy out of the loop.
I suspect it is the "demoronizer" filter (which also causes problems with other random things).
Anyone?
Sure, it's a great idea, but it has a lot of implications. For example, commercial sites rely on their banner ads to generate revenue. If I cache one of their pages, this will mess with their statistics, and mess with their banner ads. In other words, this will piss them off.
Of course, most of the time, the commercial sites that actually have income from banner ads easily withstand the Slashdot Effect. So perhaps we could draw the line at sites that don't have ads. They are, after all, much more likely to buckle under the pressure of all those unexpected hits. But what happens if I cache the site, and they update themselves? Once again, I'm transmitting data that I shouldn't be, only this time my cache is out of date!
I could try asking permission, but do you want to wait 6 hours for a cool breaking story while we wait for permission to link someone?
So the quick answer is: "Sure, caching would be neat." It would make things a lot easier when servers go down, but it's a complicated issue that would need to be thought through in great detail before being implemented.
Better button up your asshole, 'cuz Slashdot is coming to town, and we don't need no steenkin' mirrors!
BOOM!
Short answer: "We're too dumb to figure out how to implement optional caching, and plus, we don't see why we should use our bandwith that we pay for when we can leech off the other guy's bandwith that they pay for. It's the OSS way!"
My files, as obtained via the bittorrent link all freeze about 5-10 seconds in. Anyone know if those files are corrupt, or some patch for Divx I need? Running W2k, and as far as I know Divx3.11 with 5.02 on top of that.

I discovered this yesterday, so I evaded the /. effect by a good 24 hours, and thus have all the episodes.
It's extremely witty stuff, basically, why are there people sitting in a gulch fighting each other? What if they were just grunts who didn't care about fighting the other team? What if they were simply involved in a long stalemate rather than a no-holds-barred war?
It really makes me think about those long hours I spent playing Halo multiplayer.
Sort of.
Yup...
This vids certainly are a reminder of the great job Bunjie did with the models and texturing etc...
A little off topic, but does anyone have a clue about Halo coming on PC? I'm not sure what to believe anymore.
Oh and I highly recommend people read the lil FAQ on the Red vs Blue site... tis funny.

the typesetting in Halo sucked as well.
Halo is hugely popular even today, some big tournaments just took place, the AGP ( www.theagp.com ) and Halo50k ( www.halo50k.com ). Both were 4 man events (4v4), I attended and even though my team didn't win (9th place at AGP, 5th at 50k) it was a lot of fun. Another good video is Halo50k framework, you can find a mirror list here: http://halo.bungie.org/misc/frameworkmirrors.html. Another list of mirrors for the Red vs. Blue movies here: http://www.redvsblue.com/bloodgulch.shtml. A whole list of a bunch more movies here: http://halo.bungie.org/movies.html. And for those that play the game you can find gameplay tricks here: http://halo.bungie.org/tipsntricks/tricks.html

Why not make an SHA1 hash and stick that in the slashdot article? All you need is urn:sha1:HASH , and all us p2p-ers would be happy.
It would only take a few seconds to compute it, and you don't have to have a FILE, just a one-line string (possibly hidden in a link).
For anyone that has it downloaded, feel free to pass the hash...

Did anyone notice the extension on that parody of the Apple Switch ads? I can't help but notice the irony.
Hands down, bar none, the funniest sh*t I've seen in a while.
This thing was ported to X-Box not the other way around. Remember?
I'm guessing that Bungie added some new visual effects between being bought by Microsoft and finishing the Xbox version, and the changes have to propagate throughout the OpenGL and DirectX branches of the graphics engine.
Will I retire or break 10K?
If its real-time its machinima. If its a prerendered, edited, spliced, etc. its not.
I routinely download excellent looking 43 minute episodes of Enterprise off of Kazaa that are only roughly 82 megs each in DivX format. That's less than 2 megs a minute, while these Red vs Blue files are 5 times larger at 10 megs/min. Also there's not that much movement going on, so that should even further the compression abilities.
What settings were for these DivX files?
my karma will be here long after I'm gone
While this is certainly pretty cool, its sort
of a shame that the hard work of the Bungie folks
is being capitalized on by screenwriters.
The idea and script may be novel, but they're
a dim light compared to the beauty of the
Halo engine, architecture and graphics.
(and quit saying Microsoft b/c they had all of
nothing to do with this development... Anyone
who followed the dev stages of Halo knows it was
around for years before MS got its paws on it).
What's the legality of sending this off to
festivals?
Anyone?

The rule of thumb for using BitTorrent to server your files is that you only start seeing a benefit to using BitTorrent when the files are at least 50MB in size. The people putting out these files should have zipped all of the episodes into one large Torrent.
For those of you visiting from Slashdot, here's a little info on how we handle big fat referrers. We do not just let every connection grab and suck as much bandwidth as it can. We limit the max number of FTP connection so that our bandwidth does not reduce to a trickle. So. It may take you a little while to establish a connection, but when you do, it should be nice and fast. Trust us. It's much better to do it this way. This all comes courtesy of the good folks over at o1 Communications.

How about some English subtitles to go with those goodies, so much is getting lost if English isn't your native language and you don't recognize all the slang and the jokes in the audio.
So how about it? Anyone got some subtitles for these awesome eps?

If you're on windows, you need divx 5.05. You gotta update. If you're on linux, you probably need a new mplayer or xine.
