Mac OS X NWN Technology Demo Released
h0tblack writes "At long last the Mac OS X demo of Neverwinter Nights has been released. We now have a torrent running to get the demo distributed and take the load of off the official servers (macgamefiles should have the demo soon). Download the BitTorrent for Mac OS X client if you don't already have it.
Then grab the torrent file for the tech-demo from bytemonsoon.com. After downloading the demo, PLEASE leave your BitTorrent window open, this will mean that the load is shared amongst us all and more people can download faster."
see you all in about a month.

Why bother with games that have restrictive copyrights? Information wants to be free. When I copy it, I don't deprive the original owner.

Only two people are downloading it anyway, so let them swap amongst themselves.
I guess all the downloads I was doing at bytemonsoon.com will have to wait for a couple of days... the server will be melting down now.

Only one full year behind schedule! BioWare is suprising us all! Next thing you know they will get the FMV working in Linux!

Should be interesting to see how the Mac platform manages to incorporate intensive 3D graphics, especially now since they have radeons and nvidia chipsets in most of their newer/higher end computers. Enter the complaints about one-button mouse commments, but keep in mind that most of these RPG's have a ridiculous amount of required buttons and commands... when the "Quick Guide" has 10 pages, you're spending too much time learning how to play, instead of actually just playing.

Will this really be viable? There are some serious man-hours spent on this port, is it reasonable to expect this project to be profitable?
Probably not. However, it appears Bioware are pressing ahead (and doing it inhouse) because they are a games company that wants to be around in the long run, and stay one step ahead of its competitors. Writing portable code isn't something that comes as second nature to most Windows coders, least of all games coders, but they clearly think (correctly) that Linux is going to be a force in the long run on the desktop.
By teaching themselves the ins and outs of porting games, they've learned (the hard way it seems) that portability has to be a concern from the beginning. Using SDL isn't hard, but it makes porting so much easier it's untrue. Make sure any 3rd party engines you use will run on other platforms or are easily made portable. And so on.
I think it's telling they outsourced the porting of the Mac client, but kept the Linux port in house. They could have easily hired LGP for instance to port it, or done what was done for Unreal Tournament and get a freelancer in, but they didn't. That makes me think they value the experience and want to keep it internal to the company. Assuming BioWare stick around, I'd expect to see more Linux ports in future.

Is there a linux version too? Oh well great news for the OS X users though! Now they have something else than WCIII and Minesweeper ;)
And this is cutting edge technology?

Right-o! As someone who is keen on the whole "distributed" part of the internet, I shall leave that window open as soon as my download is done. You will all have the benefit of the uplink of my 2400 baud modem! Torrent away!
hopefully they have more of the bugs sorted out than they did for the first windows release. guess ill have to wait and see.

Someone hack into the RIAA website and host the demo there... much easier than using that stupid torrent system and leaving it open afterwards. Let the RIAA pay for the bandwidth!
Does anyone know how it compares to the Windows or Linux versions? I am extremely happy about the performance of the Linux client.
Also, does anyone know if they were able to leverage much of the Linux client code, since OS X is built on BSD? Just wondering...
oh man, how i wish i could be you.
But I'm letting a torrent run on my station at work just to be a nice guy. ;)
Not that I suspect bandwidth is going to be a problem, I peaked at 2030 kB/s downloading. But I've always felt bad for mac users getting shafted and wanted to help.
Just don't tell my employer.. not sure they would be too impressed watching me output the 1300 kB/s I'm doing atm..
One and a half sentence about NWN.
Four and a half sentences about BT.
I think the heading should have read "OS X NWN Demo Available via BitTorrent".
I've mirrored the .torrent file here. I removed the spaces from the filename, but it's otherwise identical to the copy from ByteMonsoon and I'm downloading from it now.
:)
Any other mirrors?

Eve Fairbanks says I drive a hybrid!LOL
I'm buying a copy for myself and every friend that has a mac and will play it. I have a lot of unix savy friends that love OS X, me included. Games are generally an after thought when you work an average of 80 hours a week. I'm really looking forward to getting a 64bit laptop that doesn't kill the pocketbook (a la the tadpole ones with ultra sparcs). Hurry up with the 970 Powerbooks!
I have NWN for PC already and have downloaded the Linux files as well. I was disappointed that the mac/linux versions weren't gold at the same time, but the reality of the situation is 99% of gamers use the PC or a console.
Better late than never!
Okay, so I guess I see what BitTorrent is. It seems to make sense. Now, what is "OS X", and can I get it for WinME? Thx.

And now the slashdot crowd have killed their server >:o(
This is getting beyond a joke, slashdot needs to do something about the effect they have on these small sites, it's not going to get better by ignoring it CmdrTaco...
But of course we all know not putting up a cache is a way to get more money in through the subscriber model.
That little ad that keeps popping up at the top of the homepage should read "If you were a subscriber you could actually get to look at the site we're about to slashdot!"

It was announced yesterday that the Shadows of Urentide expansion pack which goes on sale tomorrow comes on disk with a linux version.
Yes, it's way the hell after the announced simultaneous three platform release, but at least it's here and if you're not too busy playing Tux Racer and complaining about lack of instant gaming support, it's the most extensible and community supported RPG system to date. Have fun and remember, the campaign the game ships with ain't nothing compared to some of the great stuff the community has produced, so don't limit yourself. (Although the story in SoU's single player campaign looks pretty good in its own right.)/p
I always wonder when they use the term "Tech" demo. Is this thing playable? Or is it just some pretty graphics?

This sounds like communism to me.
Why should I care if *you* get the file? Once I'm done downloading, I'm not keeping the client open.
Looks like bytemonsoon is getting DDoS'd into oblivion.
And then a healthy dose of Slashdotting on top of that.
Read their news blurb at the bottom, if you can get to the site:

"Can of worms? The can is open... the worms are everywhere."
Amazing, considering that the NWN Linux Client is on Beta 6 and not yet official...
I do see a post on the forums stateing "Shadows of Unrentide will run fine in Linux"
I'm still waiting until the Linux client is official before I even consider NWN...major turn down for me is the lack of FMV, the movies might not be important but I'm a story driven person and missing parts of the story just to play the game doesn't fly with me, I'll wait for the "Directors Cut"
"Some things have to be believed to be seen." - Ralph Hodgson
But they promised it would be "official" within, um, a week from last week? I suppose this is their way of getting two flies with one swat, er, a press release: SoU is out, and simultaneously Linux Client is officially out of Beta. And they can pay less for their press release writers. =)
- WWWWolf, greatly angered(tm) by the fact that here, the release date isn't 18th, it's goddamn 27th...
Don't tell me all nine of you hit up their 56k server and blew it up...

KIDDING!
I browse Slashdot at +3, Funny
I imagine tomorrow there will be an official release or when 1.30 comes out. The movies are very lame. If you really want to know, ask on the bioware boards and you will get a nice little one line summary for each movie.

What are you driving at?
Submitters, enthralled with the idea of having their story ran on Slashdot, dread the inevitable bandwith-monster that in some cases renders the story near-useless (the poor server someone uses to blog melts before the story hits ~70 comments). Therefore, never being able to trust Slashdot with their bandwith and at the same time wanting their news to reach as many as possible, the submitters are starting to make the preperations we all wish the editors cared about.
With a file this size the Bittorrent may be the only feasible way for their news to reach the whole Slashdot community - resulting in the Bittorrent being more important (it decides the fate of the story regardless of content).
I imagine we're going to see this more and more unless Slashdot ever decides some sort of bandwith management (caching, Bittorrent, early-warning) of the stories is profitable, because by this point the editors are clearly not going to do it out of the goodness of their heart (in part because the community will mirror or Bittorrent on its own).
If I had a sig, this is where it would be.
Hardware: 17" tiBook, 1GB RAM
Game Settings: All options MAXED, no anti-aliasing
Resolution: 1440
Pros: Runs flawlessly, no hitches, slow framerates or draggy performance.
Cons: No NPC voices. No speech during spellcasting. No shiny water. (tho I don't remember if my vid card supports it)
Very nice job, runs great. Now just gotta wait for the DM Client!

Actually this is not entirely true. My bad. A 404 error means that it can't be found, which is different from being overloaded.
So basically 'problem connection to tracker' can sometimes be the same as 404, but other times it can mean the same as 'server too busy' but I don't know if there's a surefire way to tell which one it is.
So, more than a year later, the Mac crowd gets a port of a shitty game? Yikes. Does anyone REALLY care about games on the Mac anymore? I would assume that anyone with a Mac has already accepted their fate, and bought a PS2 (or PC) to play games on. If I ran Apple, I'd be paying off game companies left and right just to get stuff released at the same time as the PC versions. Gaming, I think, is what REALLY keeps Apple's market share from rising. In the home, at least.
For people on a cable or DSL who want to limit their upload speed you can use carrafix (www.carrafix.com) just set it to limit ports 6881 through 6889
With your neck on my shoulders we could wreck civilization!
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.
Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
I've set up an alternative tracker. The torrent is at http://www.il.fontys.nl/~bart/NeverwinterNightsTec hDemo.dmg.bz2.torrent.
Thanks so much for killing off another good BT tracker, you fucking moron.

I am a homosexual. I bought an Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. Thanks in advance.
with much gayness,
Father Randy "Pudge" O'Day, S.J.
Thanks for your letter. Being Catholic myself, I know exactly what you're talking about! It has always been our plan here at Apple Computer Inc to revolutionize personal computing with our high-quality and highly gay products.
I'm happy to answer your letter by letting you know that YES we will be releasing an entire hLife ("homo-life") software line. You'll be able to recognize it in stores by the small stylized logo depicting a large cock entering a tight anus with an Apple logo on it. ("Suddenly it all comes together" indeed!).
Anyway, I hope you and other members of our community will join us on our mission, and purchase the exciting new hLife boxed set. Only the boxed set comes with translucent cock rings!

Wow, I've never used BitTorrent before, but now I'm hooked! I got 240MB in about 30 seconds! BUT. When I try to decompress the file, I get

Has anyone seen the Linux version yet? And no, I don't mean the download-the-binary-and-use-the-Windows-disk version. I mean the actual Linux version.
they clearly think (correctly) that Linux is going to be a force in the long run on the desktop.
I'm worried that what you're saying here won't prove true. Think about it. Every Linux user who is also a gamer is already dual-booting Windows. With me so far? So a game developer has to choose:
1. Don't spend the time/money to make a Linux version and sell 1 million units. To windows users. Including the Linux guys who'll just reboot to play.
2. Spend the time/money to make a LInux version and sell...1 million units. To Windows users and Linux users who will now not have to reboot.
Contrast this with the reasoning behind Macintosh versions:
1. Don't spend the time to make a Mac version. Sell 1 million units to Windows users.
2. Spend the time/money to make a Mac version. Sell 1.2 million units*. To Windows users and Mac users.
(*Who knows. The idea here is that it's a higher number. In the Linux scenario, it's not.)
Since Linux runs on the exact same hardware as Windows, I don't see how this situation will ever be remedied.
You like your Macintosh better than me, don't you Dave? Dave? Can you hear me Dave?
It's great that they managed to make such a cool demo come in at only 240kB.
Oh, wait, nooooo...
Doesn't this guy take potty breaks? Every time someone posts a Mac story he's STILL sitting there waiting for that 17 meg file to transfer. This has been going on for months. Somebody please give him a zip drive.
Actually, I was trying to be Insightful, not Funny.
Ohhhh damn you got me, I'm so ashamed and embarrassed. An AC tried to flame me, ohhh damn. Log in pussy.
I still have a problem with a company promising multiplatform support all along (even with a promise of a simulatenous release up until a few months before the Windows release) yet using completely proprietary methods that cannot be translated to one fo the platforms that they're supposedly "officially" supporting.
STOP MISUSING APOSTROPHES, YOU MORONS!!!
Moderation has gotten out of hand on Slashdot, especially on the Mac side. If you say anything negative toward Macincrotch, some dickhole Apple lover mods you down. Guess its time to use Anonymous and proxies... Sad!
Just finished a discussion with some folks at Bioware.
Turns out a couple of the glitches aren't glitches at all.
1) Only 4 voicesets were included to compress the filesize for downloads.
2) Shiny water is not dependant upon your video card under OSX, because the current Mac implementation of OpenGL does not support it as of yet.
So, in review...neither of the glitches are bugs at all.
Game still runs flawlessly, smooth gameplay, excellent mouse response.

I'm uploading faster than I'm downloading. I've uploaded 4.5 MiB but only downloaded 3.2. What's going on? Is my mac using HyperTransport to send data that doesn't exist yet?
Dear Scumbucket, Why is it that you feel that this is the forum to spew your message from? Go back into your closet and abuse yourself some more, you obviously haven't managed to find that little piece of rice you call a dick. Sorry for your troubles. Your pathetic perspective is useless to everybody else.

Since it said "or faster" I ran it on a PC.
Ok, I'm sure plenty of you have seen it, but for those of you that haven't check this (Quicktime format) out. If you weren't convinced that gaming on a Mac is totally awesome, you will be now!
Props to redvsblue.com and their work.
Totally awesome a year later? Who cares? ONE game out of 100 released last year? At least 30 of which were as good or better? Who cares? Hey you can get Doom for Linux too, that was totally awesome in the past. Whee...
What did you switch from? Certainly not Windows. And if you switched to a Mac for gaming you missed the toilet by a mile there guy.
I think he meant 17 exabytes not megabytes. It WILL take awhile. : ) (and that would be a whole lot of Zip disks!)

HAHA Modded down again for actually stating facts about what is going on here on the Macincrotch side. And the asshead mac user modded down an anonymous...like that does any good! Once AGAIN shows the mentality of a Macincrotch user..as do your comments!
A game that has been out for quite a while for the PC FINALLY makes it to Macincrotch platform...and not only does it make slashdot, (the CRAPPLE side), but all the rotten fruit fanatics are going wild. I had all but given up on NWN, and I'm not sure that was a bad thing. They announce that they are shipping it, but at a higher price than the PC version. Then I learn that although their press release implies otherwise, the mac version is missing the toolset. A simultaneous release, with the same features at a comparable price, like Blizzard has been doing makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This makes me feel like there are some good people on the inside, pushing for treating MacOS and Linux as first class citizens, but they are not able to pull it off.
So, do I shell out for a good try in the hopes that it will encourage them to do it right next time, or will that just encourage their marketing to believe we'll put up with being treated as second or third class citizens?
Because all I got was AC's who thought I was being serious, thought I would reply to my own post to clarify...
It's a JOKE! Watch the fucking video, or atleast go to the redvsblue site!
Cry us a river troll
I finished the single-player game that comes with the package last week - in the Linux version.
:)
And I don't own a Windows box. Bought the game, installed it in Linux, played it in Linux.
So yeah, I've seen it.
Should be interesting to see how the Mac platform manages to incorporate intensive 3D graphics, especially now since they have radeons and nvidia chipsets in most of their newer/higher end computers.
Why isn't this rated "troll"?
Macs have had decent or better 3D hardware as standard for a long time now (e.g. the old G3 powerbooks all came with ATI Rage128s back when 3D acceleration was only offered on a tiny minority of PC laptops).
Enter the complaints about one-button mouse commments, but keep in mind that most of these RPG's have a ridiculous amount of required buttons and commands...
I'd imagine almost all Mac gamers and most serious Mac users have multi-button mice. It's annoying that you don't get one with your Mac for free, but on the other hand a multi-button mouse will work properly without extra drivers on a Mac -- more than can be said for MS mice on MS operating systems.
That video was funny, when I watched it last year.
There's a game on a MAC! WOW YIPPEE!!!!! We should all masturbate in celebration!!!!
Surely the 47 apple users out there aren't going to cause that much load on the server
155k down, 5k up and I'm not even trying to be a bastard.
I run an irc server for an nwn mod called daggerford, if you want to talk to its players drop by irc.darkemud.com and talk to its players and give the mod a try, its a really great NWN server.
Well, bittorrent allowed me to grab the demo quickly enough, and people have been grabbing it from me ever since. The demo itself, however, is going to make me wait a while to hear about the stability of the final version. Taking my time it took about an hour to make it through and the application died on me six times. If the real application is this unstable I might have to pass. On the plus side, it ran quite well, even on my older hardware and loaded quite snappily.
Dual 533 G4, 896meg of ram, 16 meg ATI video card.
...a problem with the NWN file. It may show up on your desktop as a document. Just Get Info and append the .dmg extension. Problem solved. Happy gaming!
I have been waiting for this for quite a while and it is definitely worth it!
I am running a 17" iMac (800Mhz G4/256MB/Ge4 32MB) and the action is excellent, not choppy at all. I was worried that the performance of the game would leave people without a high-end machine in the dust, but everything seems pretty good so far.
Nice job Bioware and MacSoft!
Well...SoU is out...and the installer doesn't work! Two setup scripts are provided, but neither actually work! Whoops, someone screwed up bigtime.
