      While it may have seemed "sneaky", in the end, what does any of us care? We don't pay any more and if it doesn't go to this guy it would just go to Amazon.com of "One-click" patent fame. I don't shop at Amazon.com for that reason in the first place so I wouldn't have used his link. People should provide some links to other shops.

      If it's just a normal Amazon sale, 5%. 2.5% for anything sold by another store or person through Amazon.com (like Target, Marshall Fields, Gap, or Marketplace sales). I think you get 15% for direct-linked books over $15. $20 for every amazon.com credit card sign-up.

      This info on the book came out over this past weekend, and was featured in an article in USA Today on the 20th, alonf with many other places if you know where to look. I'm sure dozens of folks submitted the item since then, and even earlier, but it only reached the smarter primates in the food chain today

      Technically correct, but common usage puts lbs and kg side by side as a measure of bulk.

      Recall that there is a pound mass and a pound force (or weight as you have stated). While pound mass cannot be used in engineering computations (because it is of a gravitational system of units and not as absolute system of units), it serves as the unit of mass in comercial transactions in the United States (such as the 19 pounds for the set of Far Side Books).

      Pounds as weight and slugs as mass are one version of the Imperial system; another uses pounds as a unit of mass and "poundals" as a unit of weight/force.

      The last time I weighed myself on a metric scale, it gave me the weight in kilograms. Should I say I massed myself instead?

      The parent makes perfect sense, of course, because you can choose to correlate units of mass and units of weight as long the gravitational force is kept constant. Or did you think he was giving the weight of the book on another planet?

      it depends on the type of scale you used. You most likely weighed yourself since most scales for home use use springs and not counterweights. A spring type scale measures force and not mass, the conversion to mass is done for you by the scale and is usually not adjustable for variations in gravity. The error is probably quite small though, especially relative to the scale's own inacuracies in measuring force. Counterweight type scales (like you may find at grocery stores) measure real mass.

      Mass is a universal value, whereas weight will be different, for example, on the moon.

    This would be a really really awesome Xmas gift, I need to make sure my SO knows about it. This is the equivalent of a boxed set of every Woody Allen, Monty Python, and Kids in the Hall. The Far Side is truly the best single-pane comic ever made, Larson is a genius of understatement and subtlety.

    All we need now is a complete Bloom County with extra goodies.

      They have gotten permission and more importantly the artwork to run Berke Breathed's entire Bloom County run, in order, including Outland.

      For $10, yes only $10 you get 5 panels delivered every other day, and every other day you get a Sunday panel. They take weekends off.

      I have it delivered to my email at work. Gives me a reason to come to work.

      When Slashdot originaly ran this people were bitching it wasn't free.
      Shame on them. I would pay, christ, I would pay a hell of a lot more then $10 yearly for this.

      what rock do I live under? I don't think that getting bloom country comics emails (as cool as that is) compares to having a *complete* tome of everything he did, plus goodies and other stuff. I have all the books by themselves, of course, but I'd love to see a whole collection with lots of extra junk.

      There is no referrer. Try it out yourself - go to Amazon.com then browse to books and then the complete far side. It'll automatically put those "ref=ad_12" tags in there. If it had a referrer link in there, it would look like this:

    Instead of working the extra time to spend $80 - $100 for this, just buy the 5 volumes at $5 - $15 (depends on new or used, paper or hardback) that are already out. You might not get the extra 14 cartoons or the letters, but for the price difference, you get the extra time off (see other story). I love Far Side. One of the five best strips, ever. But no way am I gonna pay that much to get a few extras.

      Instead of working the extra time to spend $80 - $100 for this, just buy the 5 volumes at $5 - $15 (depends on new or used, paper or hardback) that are already out.

      But the new version includes something like 1,100 strips that are not in any collection.

      Also over half of the strils in the book have been very nicely colorized by various artists using watercolors, so even if you have the original (black and white) books, the new one is worth having too.

      And the colored strips really do look quite nice.

      In his most recent book, he has long winded rants about the shrinking of the space available for comics. This quote was an example he hated of "throwaway gags" that are put into the first two frames of comics that can't have anything to do with the rest of the comic, because some of the newspapers wont allow room for these first two panels.

      In the announcement for the last collection of C&H Sunday strips, it mentioned that the Complete Far Side was planned for Fall 2002 and C&H for Fall 2003. Since the Complete Far Side just came out a year later than originally stated, perhaps the C&H will be out soon or at the latest next year?? I can't wait to get a limited edition tigerskin edition...

    I have an old Far Side book at home with just a few dozen cartoons, however it has an index in the back. All the letters of of alphabet are listed, however only the letter "T" has listings:

    The one about the snake.

    The one about the bear.

    The one about the deer.

    The one about .....

    I used to have one of his collections, and there was a big intro written by Larson, talking about his ups and downs cartooning, and some funny anecdotes..

    The best one involved the cartoon where a bunch of ants are standing outside the anthill holding a baby, while one screams "You idiots! We'll never get that thing down the hole!"

    Apparantly when he first submitted the cartoon, the ants were carrying a grown man. It was rejected as being too macabre and grotesque. Just for grins he redrew it with a baby, and it was accepted..

    Another story talked about the "William Tell's unfortunate other son" cartoon, where a kid with an enormous head with a tiny apple on top says "c'mon pop! shoot the apple!"... It got him sued by some Hydrocephelacy (sp?) orginization - the disease that makes your skull grow abnormally large..

    There was the "what dogs dream about" cartoon, where millions wrote him to ask "Why is that dog humping that car?"..

    In all, the anecdotes were much more entertaining than the comics themselves, of which I find 1 in 100 funny..

    Far Side is no Family Circus, but it's pretty good. Notme and Ida Know! ahhahah

      My favorites among the section that got bad reader response was "Cow Tools," "Tethercat," and the one where the old lady nails wood onto her doggie door and beckons her dog, Fifi, to run straight into it.

      That's about standard for leather bound books of this size/scale. The Piobaireachd Society collection(of bagpipe music), which is slightly shy of A3 sized and about three inches thick costs about 350, and that's only one volume.

      Skins for bookbinding are pricey - I enquired about it once, and found that a normal (ie not top-grade) skin would cost about 80 minimum, and the actual binding work plenty on top. Bear in mind this is all done by hand.

      This stuff is mainly for clowns who think they'll make a fortune selling this in the colectables market in twenty years time. They may be right. Who knows. On that note, does anyone want to buy Coldplay's Parachutes, on vinyl?

      When I read the collections, there was usually something that raised a smirk every 4 pages or something, but no, I never rated it as a hilarious comic strip (unlike Calvin and Hobbes).

      I do on the other hand rate it as a very important comic strip given that it did seem to push the boundaries of what was acceptable in cartoon weirdness though.

    This is a late comment, so probably nobody will see it, but Amazon's new full-text search feature can be used to search for your favorite Far Side cartoons (and similar things). For example: go to amazon.com and enter "vampcow" as a search term. It will give you a link to Page 6 of one of the Far Side collections which you can click on and it will actually display the scanned page from the book with the cartoon.
