      It is not suprising. Any technology in beginning was weak - for example cars slower than humans, computer "go" game loses to medium amateurs and so on. Even today most complex "AI" existing ever is many, many folds stupider than human. But it will change.

      Now, not to miss the joke, but this technique seems pretty worthless. I personally assign grades while grading, not during the test. If students want to come by in sexy dresses while I'm grading, well, at least it would break up the monotony a little; but during the exam I won't even notice.

      No doubt, there's nothing inherently wimpy about being 17 and female. Many Olympic swimmers aren't any older than she is, and just as female, and they carry around a pretty impressive amount of muscle.
      Now, if they'd find an 80-year-old woman who could beat the robots arm wrestling, that would be more impressive. But then there would be far fewer posts in the slashdot article on the match....

    Bar-Cohen says he hopes the technology improves so that robotic arms can eventually compete against -- and beat -- world-champion arm wrestlers. The artificial muscles could lead to prosthetics and other devices, he says. But for now they will just be useless toys that are completly not newsworthy unless you make some sort of stupid contest thats not really a contest at all.

    God I hope /. repost's this one. This is the most exciting thing all week! This contracting material has been around for about 12 years now and has finally matured enough to lose to a girl in an arm wrestling match.

    Since the jokes are going to be flying fast and furious over this, I thought I'd ask if anyone has links to other information about this cool research. Googling on polymer muscles brought up this page, but I didn't see anything about their ability to carry semi-fluid weight loads like groceries, tools, etc.

    One nice side note (hopefully) - since it's government funded through NASA, does this mean this work won't be patented and re-sold in the market for an even higher price than it will already cost?

      Don't count on it - NASA "technology transfer" usually means paying a contractor to develop something and then letting the contractor keep all the rights to the work funded by taxpayers.

      We actually benefitted from this once upon a time. I'm fuzzy on the details but I believe Russ Nelson developed some of the early ethernet drivers for linux as a NASA contractor and was able to release them under the GPL precisely because he had been able to maintain ownership of the copyright on them. I've heard similar stories about a lot of the original beowulf work, except in them, NASA management(?) was actively looking to give the work to a close-sourced shop but were thwarted by the legitimate GPLing of said work.

      Of course that's all rumour and conjecture, but of course this is slashdot too.

      No offense, but if you read the article, this is taxpayer-funded research. NASA will have the choice (once this research produces polymer muscles ready for the medical market) of giving this to companies to develop for use with or without a patent behind the technology. It's my hope, for all the hard-case medical cases that will benefit from this technology, that the research is sold to companies without giving any of them exclusive rights to it for 17 years (which a patent does).

      I say this since if more than one company has the rights to this technology, it will hopefully help drive down prices for the buyer.

      Of course they did. It is expected it will be tens of years before they have synthetic muscles strong enough to beat a human. What will be interesting is when they can beat a chimp. A human adult has a grip strength of about 210 pounds, while an average chimpanzee has one of 1260!

    I was studying towards my doctorate in this specific field for two years. This particular challenge was touted for a long time and was supposed to be the holy grail that would establish for ever the authenticity of conductive polymers and this field. Too bad it hasn't turned out this way.

    There was never enough "science" in this field. Too much sci-fi and reliance on empirical data rather than precise modeling and ability to predict force! Why, even a basic equation like F=Ma needed to be applied in twisted and convoluted way for such materials.

    As a mechanical engineer, I never thought this was going anywhere. After working on this field for two years, I finally left school and got a MS as a consolation. Now I work in the finance industry.

    Disclaimer: I have not RTFA so I don't know who is actually funding this. That said...

    The GP poster claimed that this was GOVERNMENT FUNDED research, done through NASA. While it may have been conducted by a private organization, if the funding money came from the government, that means that it came from "We, the people". Therefore, giving ownership of the resultant "intellectual property" (debates on the legitimacy thereof aside) to a particular corporation or individual is robbing "We, the people" from the due returns on our investment, and furthermore, allowing us to be charged twice for it!

    We already paid for the R&D, through our tax dollars. The only thing we should have to pay for any application of that R&D are the costs to actually apply it - the production costs. Non-public-domain IP rights for IP which was already funded by the public is a nonsense idea. We already bought it. It belongs to us, collectively. To assign it otherwise is no less than theft (by the RIAA/MPAA definition of the word).

      The point for these robot is to demonstrate the possible use of artificial muscles. Any "decent" engineer will either go electric motors for speed, steeper motor/hydraulic for brite force. But the problem here is that electric motors got too little torque and hydraulics/steeper motor system are too heavy to be used in prothetics.

    I've noticed that when people arm wrestle, there are a lot of vibrations as peoples' arms shake and strain against the other person pushing them. Micro fluctutations in increases and decreases in power.

    Maybe something about her exact rate of acceleration and muscle shaking created some kind of harmonic flutter that the robotic muscles weren't preapred to deal with. Just a hypothesis about why she might have won when presumably other didn't.

      I'm not arguing anything about what *does* happen. There are plenty of factual, easily demonstratable cases of things that *do* happen, even if by all rights they probably *shouldn't*.

      I'm only arguing that this is a case of something that *shouldn't* happen, regardless of whether or not is *does* happen. If we, the public (taxpayers), paid for some research, the results of that research rightly belong to us, in the public domain. If that's happening, great. If not, that's wrong. I don't know factually which case is actually happening (can't RTFA at the moment), I'm just reasoning which should or shouldn't be happening.
