Unfortunately, now that Harmonix has given up the GH franchise, I doubt it will get better from here. Harmonix invented this genre (Amped, Guitar Hero, GH2) and they have moved on to do Rock Band, which will sell for fairly decent if nothing more than fan loyalty to Harmonix.

I have some worries about GH:III due to this fact, but I'm still more than willing to give it a shot. The track list, at over 70 songs, is just simply killer and according to Wikipedia, it appears GH:III will have several new gameplay additions, particularly for competitive play, which really does sound like some nice touches.

Likewise, I'm actually MORE excited for Rock Band. I've only recently picked up Karaoke Revolution and really enjoy it. I can imagine adding Drums and 2-3 friends would really kick butt. Except... I only own a Wii and PS2. Rumors are they'll release a Wii version, but no concrete details and if and when. There's a PS2 version which I might just break-down and buy until a Wii version arrives (at whatever cost I'll loose by trading in the PS2 version). Though, I want to avoid the PS2 due to no downloads and I don't feel like dropping $400 for a 360/PS3 to buy a $200 game. So, I'm hoping GH:III will tide me over until more details on a Wii version arrive.

Heck, Guitar Freaks came along in 1998. It's got a good 7 years on GH.

I actually liked the demo of GH3 better than GH2. They've made the aforementioned gameplay additions to multiplayer, but they have also cleaned up some things in the single player game that I always hated (e.g., screen no longer shakes when going into star power mode), and they've made some nice informational additions to the interface. Also, the difficulty seems generally harder due to the inherently faster pace of the game, and the set list is phenomenal. All in all, a worthy sequel. I'm intensely curious about Rock Band, however, I can't see myself buying it. I just don't get together to game with friends often enough to make the whole set worth it.

I'm not sure why it's only Anonymous Cowards who are pointing this out, but it's an important point that should be seen by everyone. Harmonix didn't invent the rhythm genre. Harmonix didn't even invent the hold-one-or-more-neck-buttons-while-strumming-the-bidirectional-lever guitar rhythm genre. Konami released the first version of Guitar Freaks in 1998.

my friend found a copy of CH3 on sale at Meijer, i believe. some employees put it out on accident and he bought it. i can definately say that this game still lives up to the Guitar Hero series. i plan to get both, though. :D

What I really like about the GHIII set list is the fact that only 19 out of the 70+ song are "as made famous by" with the rest being recordings from the original artist. IMO this is the biggest benefit to this edition over the previous installments which were closer to the other way around. Either Activision has more $$ to pay for the originals, or more artists (read: copyright owners)are realizing that supporting Guitar Hero does wonders for the good will of their fans.

Disagree. Guitar Hero 2 has the worst set of all the games by a long shot, in my book. Too much damn metal, I can't stand playing about half the songs in that game. GH3 may or may not be a lot better, but at least GH1 and GH 80s had more than 50% tolerable songs.

I play Guitar Hero to play songs I actually enjoy listening to. I am not about to play a song I hate, no matter how challenging or fun it is to play. Not to mention that in Guitar Hero 2, I feel that the harder songs aren't even fun to play due to being so hard (I have no aversion to hard, I cleared GH1 on expert after all, but GH2 is too damn hard for my taste).

Based upon your username, I'll assume you're a fellow guitarist.

I found Bark at the Moon and Cowboys from Hell to be MUCH harder than Hangar 18 and Free Bird. This is probably due to the lack of proper hammer-ons/pull-offs in GH1.

Or maybe it's because I pretty much play nothing but death metal solos (on real guitar) which use a lot of sweep picking/sweep tapping. My hand coordination/timing is quite good...

I am, indeed, a guitarist, although quite amateur and unpracticed (I unfortunately haven't played my Strat in 3 or 4 years, although I should get back to it). The name is actually an old one that I reused (I'll let you guess when it's from ;)).

That aside, I learned to cope with the lack of hammerons/pull-offs in GH1 by strumming all the time. In GH2, the solos are too blistering for me to be able to finger. Example: the beginning of the solo in Free Bird, where you get a pattern of B-Y-R-Y, repeating for quite a while. I can't play that. My fingers just can't move quickly and accurately enough (Can you tell I was never a great guitarist? I could do it if it was two alternating notes, but my motor skills aren't up to snuff for this one), so I fail out very quickly after that part. And the solos in GH2 tend to be longer, for that matter. Maybe I just didn't have a lot of patience for it (I got good at GH1 when I was jobless, so I literally spent all day playing GH, which was not the case when GH2 came out), but GH2 feels incredibly hard to me compared to GH1.

I found that Jessica was the best song to practice on to get good at sweeping.

There is one advantage to being good at the epic solos... you can draw crowds in stores like Best Buy. I 98%'ed Hangar 18 on expert (missed a few notes towards the end) and by the time I finished a crowd of about 10 people were standing behind me watching. When I finished it and turned around, they applauded.

It was cool. :)

I can usually 99% Jessica in stores, but I haven't played in months so I probably can't anymore. :/

Meh. I've found that being able to play guitar and being able to play guitar hero aren't necessarily related. You may pick up the rules faster, but there's a big difference between pressing a button and actually holding a note. Mostly; I'm not required to reach seven inches and five buttons since notes repeat themselves nicely and logically in any scale you'd want to solo.

I don't know why people put so much emphasis on learning scales. Modes are far more important.

You should learn musical theory in this order: modes -> scales -> chords

Playing metal guitar helps with timing/left hand dexterity if anything. Sweep picking sort of requires perfect timing to pull off, so translating that skill to Guitar Hero does help quite a bit.

I heard that Harmonix preferred to do covers of the songs because it made developing the game more fun. Also, since the game puts the player as the lead guitarist of a new band doing covers of other bands' music, it seems to make more sense that your band doesn't sound exactly like the original. I guess Rock Band might follow along that line considering you're getting a band together in the first place rather than just one instrument.

I find it hilarious that they put Sabotage on the list. Give the guitar part a good listen sometime--all it is is nonstop heavily distorted muted eighth notes (with a handful of unmuted hits in there). Nearly the entire "melody" is the bass.

You know you can play the Bass part in Guitar Hero, right? Some of the songs in GH2 had much more interesting bass parts as well... John the Fisherman, War Pigs, etc.

I agree that it's funny to point out the inclusion of such songs in "guitar" hero games, but it's not quite as silly as you might think if you hadn't played it.

Through the Fire and the Flames is overrated. Dragonforce's first two albums were great, Inhuman Rampage exists simply as an excuse for them to jack off their fretboards. And there are songs that are harder to play, too. Technical death metal FTW.

He said that they are "alright" live, which leads me to believe that they are way beyond over produced.
If you want techical guitar playing, look elsewhere.

I'd love to see any Dream Theater in a Guitar Hero game, but the longer and more intricate the track the better. Personally I think that "Under a Glass Moon" would be an excellent choice, at least for the Rock Band game--torment the keyboard player a bit.

If you want to go further down the "incredibly long song" category, they could always put one of the Jethro Tull concept albums on there. I would definitely like so see someone play Thick as a Brick without missing a note.

I think ACOS would be highly improbable though, just too long. Quite a few people would love to tackle Metropolis or UaGM, maybe even some sick shit like Dance of Eternity. The fact is, DT has so many tunes that would be PERFECT for Guitar Hero. I mean, John Petrucci is like, THE current raigning guitar God who isn't simply a solo artist.

Somehow I think a couple of punk rockers got on board and basically said, "down with prog". Oh well, you know they'll be some of the first custom builds and downloadables.

There's already been a game for Slow Ride for decades - it's called "Can the D.J. get done taking a shit before the song is over?" If there's dead air at the end of the song, you know the DJ lost the game.

Slow Ride sucks. I hate it. The only reason it's still on the air is because DJs have to defecate too. Every time you hear it, you know that the DJ is taking his kids to the pool while you listen. Definitely turns me off too the song.

This is no longer true as radio is no longer live. I worked at a Clear Channel station for close to minimum wage where the djs came in, recorded their talk in like 20 minutes, and then left. The song list was selected by a computer halfway across the country or something, and I got to watch TV and make sure the system didn't freeze or something. I'm pretty sure I was only there because of FCC regulations saying that somebody had to be there.

To expand/correct:
Activision bought Red Octane, and the rights to the franchise along with it. Neversoft filled in Harmonix's shoes for Guitar Hero 3. That's why Guitar Hero 3 has a completely different engine and a different "feel" to the way the songs are charted.

Harmonix was purchased by MTV and set to work making Rock Band.

The Guitar Hero name and franchise is owned by Red Octane, a publishing company now owned by Activision. Harmonix was bought by EA. The two companies are now competitors with Harmonix developing Rock Band and Neversoft (of Tony Hawk fame) now developing Guitar Hero. Harmonix pitched the Rock Band idea to RO but in the end RO decided that the drum kit idea wasn't as easy for players to pick up and wouldn't do as well as their guitar hero franchise and so passed on the idea.

I thought I had read earlier that it was pretty certain that one of their songs from their new self-titled album was going to be on that list with "It Doesn't Seem To Matter" as a prime candidate. This was back a few months after the release of their new album. So what happened? With Army of Anyone, there was a disappointing amount of sales, and now there's rumors of a break-up as Richard Patrick is going to work on his new Filter album. So does album sales drive what goes into the game and what doesn't? The album rocks. The songs rock. So what gives? Army of Anyone has the Deleo brothers from STP + Richard Patrick from Filter FYI.

However great Harmonix is, they completely missed the boat there -- music games like this are certain to appeal to Wii gamers more than others.

In any case, looks like a pretty good track list. I'm just hoping they get their shit together as far as downloadable content for the Wii, so I can play some of the songs from the older games. (And better pricing than what the 360 GH2 had would be nice; that was a bit ridiculous.)

Yeah, but how many people do you think picked up three extra Wiimotes + Nunchuks at $180 to play 4 player Wii Sports? Classic controllers for the VC? Game Cube controllers (for those that didn't have a Gamecube)? Charging stations? Wireless Sensor Bars? Wiimote protectors?

The Wii is an accessory makers dream...Rockband should fit right in.

As if casual was defined by price. Casual is all about the game's content. Oblivion for 5 bucks is not casual. Guitar hero isn't exactly a cheap game, but it's the definition of casual.

But, if you don't believe me, look at the November and December figures early next year. Chances are GHIII sells about as much in the Wii as the 360 in the US with a smaller install base.

However great Harmonix is, they completely missed the boat there What harmonix is doing is not alienating there current fans (all PS2 and/or XBox 360 owners) and maintaining focus on just a couple consoles rather than all three. There will probably be a Wii version eventually but it's always better to appeal to your existing fan base first.

Personally I'm getting both (and had to finally make the jump to the current gen systems to do it).

A pretty good slice of the Wii's audience is people who are cash-rich and time-poor. They want games they can pick up and play without having to commit a large amount of time at any one session.

A lot of people were happy to pay £270 for a Wii with three extra wiimotes just so they could play Wii Tennis doubles. No damn joke. They bought the console because their fanboy relative who bought it for Zelda brought it home over Christmas and they all wanted in on Wii Sports. You see that low attach rate for Wii game sales? These people are why. Wii Sports alone was worth it for them - any other games are a bonus.

This then is the casual gamer. They'll spend that much money if the game's right. I think the kind of person who would buy a novelty machine to play a four-way novelty sports game will be quite likely to be interested in a four-way novelty music game, too.

The number of really good bands that are missing is large, though. Most of them stayed with Harmonix/MTV (Rockband). It just somehow seems flat. A few good songs, and then tons of B side fillers. Loads of 70s and 80s stuff. None of the cutting-edge modern feel that Harmonix did so well. It really IS Dance-Dance-Hero. Good job, Sony.

Rock Band will cost more, but it's well worth it.

Oh, Rockband will cost the same as Guitar Hero III if you just want the game and a guitar controller. The $200 package has the drums, mic, and guitar. The drums kit is essentially a MIDI drum pad setup with a little bit or reworking, which is quite a deal, considering what they usually run.

You're a damned fool. Wii's audience is casual gamers. Does a $200 game sound casual to you? I love the Wii too, but you're just being ridiculous.

Casual games are defined by the type of game rather than the price. The type of people that the Wii attracts, fits right in with are largely the same demographic that would buy a Guitar Hero, DDR, or Karaoke game.

Seriously, you can get a decent guitar from a pawn broker from $100, then all you need to do is visit http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and find the tab to your favorite song and literally be ACTUALLY playing it in minutes. All you need to do is start out with the Major and Minor scales, then the rest comes naturally and you will be actually be rocking and will be able to impress the ladies.

Speaking from experience, there are many songs in Guitar Hero that are easier to play on guitar than in expert. There are many "tricks" and techniques one can use while playing guitar that can't be done on a GH controller.
