Family Guy Spins off Cleveland

E Online is reporting that a new spinoff is currently in the works to feature Cleveland, the soft-spoken neighbor in popular animated sitcom Family Guy. "Not much is known about Cleveland other than the fact it will revolve around the Brown clan. It's unclear whether the series will remain set in the town of Quahog or whether Cleveland, along with his wife and son, will continue to appear on Family Guy, though as both series are animated, the double-billing won't so much be a logistical problem as a creative decision."

Quagmire's too gimmicky to be a main character. As a recurring secondary character the jokes work fine, but if you had them constantly for 22 minutes per show it'd grow old fast.

And the answer is because Fox Broadcasting is run by clinical retards (no offense to anyone who is or is related to an actual retarded person, as you or they are probably vastly overqualified to run Fox).

Seriously, first they dick around with Family Guy's time slot enough that nobody knows when its on, it gets bad ratings, so they cancel it. Then the simians (apologies to monkeys) realize they were flushing a heap of cash down the toilet when the DVD sales were through the roof. So they brought it back, and hey, if a little Seth McFarlane humor is good, more is better, so let's make American Dad too! And hey that's not doing bad so let's go for broke and make a third show that's essentially the same!

I bet once they've saturated the market (more), the spin-offs won't do so well and they'll start screwing around with the scheduling of all three shows until they've once again convinced themselves they aren't worth it and shit-can the lot.

And it isn't like they haven't screwed up plenty of shows before like this *cough*Futurama*cough*Firefly*cough* Personally I think the only thing they ever had going for them is that they'd air shows other networks wouldn't take a chance on, and the only reason they had their early hits of The Simpsons and Married With Children is because back then they were so starved for content they simply didn't have the capacity to screw up those shows.

Anyway, I think pretty much any Family Guy spinoff is doomed to failure, whether it's Cleveland or Quagmire or Meg for that matter (oh hey, they have a Mike Judge show, maybe a Family Guy/Daria crossover! where's my money, Fox?!)

Because most of the other characters already have their place in the shows cannon, they are well established features that are nothing in and of themselves but when taken as a whole with the griffin family the create family guy. Cleveland is unique in the fact not much is set in stone about him, he isn't a sex offender, he isn't a cop with something to prove due to physical short comings. He is somewhat like mort, I can understand why the chose Cleveland as he is one of the more major characters yet has little established about him other than, he has a son we haven't seen in some time, a wife that left him, and a speech impediment due to a head injury. He was once an auctioneer. It seems that as one of the major minor characters, with little explained or developed about him (other than his mild-mannerness (is that word?)) he has the most popularity and greatest potential in regards to character development.

i think fox is run by the guy who kept changing the time slot of 'quantum leap' over on another network that's done this kinda ridiculous stuff before...

i mean naruto and bleach don't have to deal with stuff like this, the only time slot changes are special 1 hour episodes, and of course when naruto went from the evening to prime time.

Smallville fortunately has never had it's time slot played with, as best as i can remember neither cheers nor star trek the next generation had to deal with the 'time slot shuffle'

the time slot shuffle usually kills off a show, and to be totally honest internal network politics is the most likely reason why stupid networks kill off profitable shows. 'oh you cant kiss the butt of the president of this network then Die' is what i imagine something like what happens when a show can't contractually be canceled, but they want it to suffer bad enough that can cancel it at the next option to do so..

American Dad was in production after the initial cancellation of Family Guy, and was more Fox's way of partially pulling their head out of their ass by asking him to basically re-create Family Guy, anyone who has seen the pilot of American Dad can attest to this, before they fully removed it by bringing back Family Guy.

Personally Family Guy jumped the shark around the period between seasons five and the movie. Since South Park called it out for what it is, McFarlane really hasn't tried to do anything funny aside from jokes the grow unfunny the longer they go on (the musical numbers that go on for 3-5 minutes).

American Dad has actually better better and shown more depth in the seasons it has been around than Family Guy after it's demise.

Family Guy was never originally good with the ratings. Fox's schedule shuffling was an attempt to keep it alive (not purposely kill it like you think) by finding an audience that could compete share-wise with their other programming. Re-airing on Adult Swim saved it because it allowed it to gradually build a fan base at a pace that bigger networks (which compete with other bigger networks) can't afford. I too, originally, didn't like it but now I'm a huge fan and I'm glad it came back.

As far as why Cleveland, why not? Who are you to say what the writers feel they have more potential with? Are you a successful animation creator?

I was about to bring up The Simpsons... not in a racist way... more in a "This show is no longer worth watching" way.

To my mind Family Guy suffered a faster decline than The Simpsons, dying suddenly in series 5 rather than suffering a patchy sort of decline from series 7 while continuing to air the very occasional, almost classic episode on into the ninth series before finally dying completely in the tenth.

A Cleveland spinoff... I'd actually rather watch Chief Wiggum and "Skinny Boy" arsing around the remains of New Orleans.

Precisely what happened to the Lone Gunmen series. Instead of having fairly serious, more "real world" conspiracies to deal with, they did almost nothing but silly and often times cheesy humor based plots.

Really though, Family Guy in and of itself is iffy. Sometimes it's pretty funny but more often than not it just feels slapped together. The innate randomness of the series makes sure that nothing ever really happens, and its reliance on topical humor and pop culture references ensure that any given episode will be completely irrelevant after a few years.

American dad was actually started before Family Guy returned to TV. It was going to be Seth's new show, since family guy had died. Then when FOX decided to bring Family Guy back, they just kept both since they had already planned to air American Dad. The pilot show for American Dad had been floating around on the internet for a long time before Family Guy was announced as returning. Most of the good original writers went over to American Dad upon its creation.

Actually, that pretty much describes the whole show.

Family Guy is over-rated, and jumped the shark a long long long time ago. As other critics have pointed out, the jokes have nothing to do with what passes for a storyline, and can be interchanged with any episode. I guess that appeals to 12 year old boys.

I'll never understand why crap like Family Guy was resurrected, while the brilliant Futurama was not.

And don't forget Arrested Development and Undeclared. That they couldn't get ratings with Arrested Development after winning so many awards is a massive failure on Fox's part but like the other shows, they greenlight something strange and then don't know what to do with it. Note that Firefly got a movie made, Futurama has one in the works, and most of the Arrested Development cast have been contacted about their schedules for a new movie project. Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks are dead as can be but Judd Apatow is one of the hottest people in Hollywood right now heavily using cast and style of humor from those shows. I'm kind of torn about Fox because no other network would've even given these shows a chance, but in my best GOB voice: Come on!

Fox just kills good shows. If I worked at another network, I'd just buy up any franchise that Fox killed off without a proper farewell. And these shows get bad when they're brought back, generally. I am not sure why, but I suspect it has to do with wanting to please Fox enough to stay on the air more than a season or two the second time around.

And, because I seriously hate people who say that shit, I'm going to point out that cartoon network's adult swim (which brought the show back from the dead) is largely viewed by nerds, and adult animation is mostly enjoyed by nerds, and dammit, it's a good show.

However, I do hope that it's not just another family guy clone like American Dad. Seriously, why not just do 3x as many family guy episodes and not have american dad or this new cleveland one?

Once you've seen 5 Family Guy episodes you've seen them all... and it gets tiring, just like any other show which continuously uses the same elements (flashbacks, apparently random scenes, I'm looking at you). All of the Adult Swim lineup seem to condense a lethal dose of these types of things into the shows, which makes me wonder why people still like it?

"The Simpsons" are your for real? That show has been hit and miss for the last 8 years or so. It holds its viewership today because its more of an Institution then anything else. Honestly "The Simpsions" deliver some great stuff even today but its few and far between. It was much more inteligent in pre 2000 or there abouts then it is today. Mostly its the same tired jokes over and over again now, with names replace with whatever is popular this week, often these jokes don't even really fit anymore.

I still watch but its not what it used be. "Family Guy" and "American Dad" are at least IMO as strong as the "Simpsons" and that is not saying much. Frankly I have been much more impressed with the Live action Comedy CBS and expecially NBC have been doing lately. Fox has lost its edge.

The Simpsons still has its moments, but South Park hasn't been funny ever since they degenerated into making every single episode a tediously drawn out morality play. All three of these shows have been going downhill for years, but I have to say South Park went the fastest.

I'm not sure why you think that either of those shows is more sophisticated than Family Guy. They all rely on the same sorts of humor, just in slightly different proportions.

It's a clip show format, like SNL, but a smaller, more static cast. Sometimes the clips last longer than 30 seconds, but usually then it's for effect, like fighting with that chicken for 3-4 minutes straight. If you don't like clip shows, might I recommend (the canceled) Studio 60, The West Wing, or most anything on HBO? Family guy is not about character or plot development.

I was beginning to think I was the only one here that not only watches American Dad, but enjoys it. It is clearly Seth's brand of humor, but unlike Family Guy, it has its subtle moments, and there is some actual character development as the series goes. Aside from the humor, I like watching Haley battle her need to be practical with her desire to be a far-left feminist.

I hated the first season, possibly even the second. But the show's grown on me, and has become something of a semi-guilty pleasure that I look forward to watching. The characters are still stereotypes for the most part, but they're still changing as the show progresses. That alone is pretty amazing for a wacky joke show.

South Park doesn't suck because of the style of the humor, it sucks because of the cheesy morals on which they often base the storyline, made it become formulaic and unfunny, and therefore sucky.

If you generally don't like constant slapstick, potty humor, I can't fault you. However, people who consider themselves intellectually superior because they can't get off on joke that's not related to physics, astronomy, 15th century Spanish literature (or whatever esoteric subject they happen to care about) just plain suck; suck the fun out of everything, that is. Does everything have to provoke intellectual stimulation?

For fuck's sake, we don't even let kids be kids anymore. They get bombarded by Mozart in the fucking womb, they get started down a path which makes them become sedentary and myopic by being planted in front of shit like Baby Einstein, and they don't go outside because their lazy and idiotic parents can't supervise and prevent them from being abducted, and molested by people who were also the product of technocratic disease--and then you wonder why our culture is breeding people who are apathetic, uncreative failures-at-life. I for one am glad that the fun isn't completely gone yet. I know why these kids go and shoot up schools, malls and etc: because at least their last few moments might be somewhat entertaining.

Fox seems like they're actively trying to fuck it up again. Every time I turn it on to watch Family Guy, there's some bullshit sports event on. Before they had to cancel it the first time, they kept putting on sports and moving it around so that the fans lost interest.

I disagree. Most of Family Guy's jokes rely heavily upon popular culture references, and a good understanding of them (and a quick enough mind to link them up fast enough to get it, IMHO). I definitely wouldn't recommend Family Guy to someone of average, or less then average intelligence, because in my experience, they don't get it.

That said, I would agree that Family Guy is very much a niche comedy. But saying I, and others like me, are idiots because we like it, is just stupid.

The Simpsons still has its moments, but South Park hasn't been funny ever since they degenerated into making every single episode a tediously drawn out morality play. All three of these shows have been going downhill for years, but I have to say South Park went the fastest.

I'm not sure why you think that either of those shows is more sophisticated than Family Guy. They all rely on the same sorts of humor, just in slightly different proportions. I personally think South Park was crappy until they became moral plays. Season 5 is about when they started becoming funny.

South Park might do shallow depictions of situations and events, compared with WikiPedia, for example. But it goes way deeper than most other shows, and hell, deeper than most discussions you see on the news, or by politicians on the same topics.

I love seasons 9-11 (and the season about 9/11 :-), and some episodes from season 5-8 are also awesome.

This is exactly why MacFarlane's shows are good - they parody the harsh reality. Thanks to them, we can see what is basically wrong with today's society without all that "be correct, be proper, be good" crap that other more serious shows try to feed us, PLUS wrapped around in some good old stupid, random and wacky gags/jokes. I personally view Family Guy as a show that tries to rope together all the different types of humor, so it appeals to different parts of your sense of humor.

Yes, I miss the episodes of All in the Family where the greased up deaf guy runs across the stage or where Edith is shown many times naked or, the greatest ones are where Archie is naked multiple times in the same episode but you can't see anything besides a butt because he is so freaking fat. Beyond the obvious similarities, the reason, IMHO, that The Jeffersons succeeded was because it was a significantly different show. As entertaining as MacFarlane is, he does not seem to anything other than family guy. American Dad, for instance, just is not that different, simply the same show with a plot instead of arbitrarily strung together jokes. Recall that "All in the family" had many spin off, some good, some not. In particular "Archie Bunker's Place", though successful, was pretty bad.

FWIW, the show the "Dynomiiiiiiiiiiite!" guy was on ("Good Times") was a spinoff of "Maude" (the mother, Florida, was Maude's maid), and "Maude" itself was a another spinoff of "All in the Family" (Maude being Edith Bunker's cousin, I believe).

All In The Family was definitely a "diminishing returns" thing. There were a few spin-offs of it, the only one that was remotely funny was The Jeffersons. I think Bea Arthur is a funny lady, but Maude just never cut it. Gloria was a short-term joke (a Meathead spinoff would have been a lot more fun). Good Times tried to brave in showing a realistic 1970s black family, but the producers let that useless ham Jimmy Walker completely fuck it up. Archie's Place was sort of like watching an Olympic sprinter with one leg try to run the 100m dash; without Edith the character of Archie Bunker just didn't work.

Spinoffs by and large fail mainly because the chemistry of the successful parent show isn't there. You quickly find that the character you find funny or interesting is only that way because of the entire ensemble, and when taken out of that, it just flounders. Try to imagine any of the major Seinfeld characters out on their own. It would be unwatchable.

The reason Gloria was such a flop is because by the time they made it they'd forgotten what it was that made the character so good. Instead of a feisty young woman standing up for her rights, we saw a spineless wimp going "poor little me" over and over.

Frasier and the Jeffersons seem, to me, to be something of an exception. But in both cases the writers and actors were able to create a chemistry of their own. They may have been spin-offs, but they stood on their own two feet.

Perhaps part of it too is picking the right characters. Frasier wasn't the obvious choice for the character to spin off into a new series, but he was the right character. There were all the standard comic personality traits, but also humanity as well. Somebody like Cliff or Norm would have been a disaster, because they were ultimately pretty one-dimensional characters (funny, I'll admit, but where could you go with them?).

I quite vaguely remember this show. VERY vaguely... As in, I watched Barney Miller as a kid, but seem to remember something about "Fish"...

A quick trip to Wikipedia brought a bit of it back, but not enough.

Makes no sense

Cleveland is funny but only in a laid back and chilled contrast to the rest of the show, like pickled ginger between pieces of sushi. On his own, it just doesn't work. The only spin-off I can imagine that would be worse is giving the fucking pedophile his own show. That whole character is one giant "dude, not funny", but without even eliciting a guilty snicker.

I think the strongest characters on the show are Stewie, Brian, and Lois. Peter is too much of an idiot to be funny and both Meg and Chris are too one-note. The rest of the neighbors may be one-note but they still manage to be funny every time they toot it -- anything can be forgiven so long as it remains funny.

I'm glad both it and Futurama were uncanceled but what I'm really looking forward to is more Venture Bros. :)

Warming up to American Dad

I know it seems a sad ripoff of Family Guy (talking dog=talking fish, etc) and the first several American Dad episodes wern't anywhere near as sharp as the new ones, the show has grown on me and gotten sharper. We get the know the characters and backgrounds along with the writers getting sharper and sharper.

Go pull the first volume of Family Guy and you can see it is nowhere near as sharp as it got in the 2nd season and above. It had all the elements we love, but it only delivered 10-25% of the time. I feel American Dad took time to get up to speed, and I'm finding it fit into Seth's universe quite nicely.

Felt the same way on the first couple of episodes of Futurama. Felt is was a sad follow-up to the fading Simpsons. Now it stands up quite well.

As far as still appearing on Family Guy I think it depends on the contract they negotiate with him. He seems pretty laid back and I could see him not wanting the extra pressure of having to work more than one show. It can get confusing with the multiple story lines and all.

While Mila is quite attractive, I'm not quite ~25 anymore - in fact I'm quite a bit older than that. As such she kinda looks like a kid (though a very nice looking one). As far as legality goes, yep very much past that point and I can't say I would complain of one was interested in me (haha, yea right).

However I find Alex to be quite nice. She is even a fuzz older than me so she has that whole "older woman" thing going and is still on the quite attractive side. She isn't enough older that it is strange (only a couple of years) and she has a fairly decent body *and* I like her humor so I wouldn't complain.

As for their voice, well no question - even when not in character I prefer Mila. But then neither are really my favorite voice in the world so I guess that isn't so much of a variable in the whole equation.

Of course since in reality I will never have said choice it is all academic anyway - there are quite a few super models I would rather have regardless their age so those two are still low on the whole "I want" totem pole :)

You have got to be kidding me? Now we have 3 ripoffs of the same show? Wow, Fox is getting desperate to make up for EVERY SINGLE TV SHOW it cancels...

Fox made the Family Guy as a cheap Simpsons clone, and it became popular with teens (why teens? Because they will watch ANYTHING, look at horrible movies like Meet The Spartans). Then came American Dad, a ripoff of the Family Guy.

I love The Simpsons, but it is HARDLY ON anymore because stupid Fox feels the best show on their network should take back seat to a cheap ripoff show. I get 2 Fox channels, one from RI and one from MA. On the RI channel, the new lineup is: 6:30 and 7:30 Family Guy, and 1 Simpsons episode. Wtf??? It's a good thing I don't live in RI, then that would be my only option...

Fox is getting desperate to put out anything not reality related, the Terminator show is a golden example. They ran out of ideas, so they just copied from a dumb 90s movie!

This show will be canned after a few episodes (unless Fox goes after the teens that watch anything).

Teenagers don't get many of the 80s specific jokes on the show. Seth made that show for people in his age group. Those of us in late 20s through mid thirties are the ones who watch the show. When it's not preempted for racing, football or some other gay ass sporting event.

You've obviously missed the new episodes of the Simpsons and that isn't a bad thing.
Sure the classic episodes outclass Family Guy and co but series by series from about season six the simpsons has transfomed itself into complete trash, here is how every single episode now proceeds:
Homer does something crazy, as a result he goes somewhere or becomes something with hilarious consequences (a phrase in comedy which indecates the episode will be in no way funny). In the process Homer will meet a celebrity.
I don't even get a single laugh from most of the latest episodes shown here in the UK. American Dad on the other hand which has just started airing here actually has laughs, a point to the plots and decent heaps of satire that were sadly lost from the simpsons about a decade ago. It will never match the truely great episodes of the early Simpsons but it's up to the average episodes.
Anyway, if you like the Simpsons as much as you say you'll have picked up the early series boxed sets and can watch all the good episodes that are likely ever to be produced.

There is a lot of overlap between geek culture and pop culture, and slashdot generally hits the nail on the head. In this case however, I have to throw my lot in with the '!news' ground and say this is not a topic slashdot should be covering, and it is not a direction I want to see it go in. I like family guy, and am mildly interested in a spin-off. In fact, i have a few opinions on the matter I might be inclined to share on a comment site - but not slashdot. Slashdot is my haven of geekhood, where I read about the latest hizzy fit between RMS and theo de raadt, SCO zanyness, steve balmars latest dance moves etc. It is not where I go for the latest goings on in the realm of 'generation X', pop culture, my-face-bebo-boy land. It does overlap, but that doesn't mean there aren't boundries.

Sure, there was a few articles about futurama - futurama = sci-fi = geek. No problem. Perhaps somehow a confusion arrived thinking futurama = animated, family guy = animated, therefore it is geek! Family guy has no geek crediential. No reason to be on slashdot. This is not fox-watch, not 'animation-maniac-fans.com'. They are not using some highly clever bit of software automate production of the two shows. It is news for pop-culture, not news for nerd.

Where is it going to end - a sidebar with the top ten funniest you-tube clips? 50 different smiley characters and RTF entry text box to spice up the comments (not fogetting flashing text)?

Lets try to keep slashdot geek, and let the pop-culture sites do pop culture.

I disagree. The entire Blue Harvest episode is an hour's worth of "greek credential." They riff on Star Trek often. There's been TRON, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, and Poltergeist segments that were not only hilarious but also very true to the originals. I've not counted, but it seems like a quarter of the jokes are references to science fiction TV shows or movies. MacFarlane comes across in many interviews as a geek. Sure, he has his political points to make, and his jokes are often no more than riffs on popular culture. But Star Wars, Star Trek, et. al. are points where geek culture intersects with pop culture.

First of all, you have to look at your age. Family Guy started out as a cartoon for 35-45 year-olds. TONS of cultural references that just went straight over the heads of the 'youngsters.'

At least for the first 2.? seasons. Somewhere in the middle of the third season, they fell completely apart. Everything became puke, sex, and blood jokes. Nothing about the movements we either grew up with or grew up hearing about, thirty years ago. Now it theoretically appeals to the 17-year-old crowd, but I've got my doubts.

But make no mistake, there WERE some genuinely funny bits early on, at least for us old folks.

Nobody is trying to pretend that. There are plenty of stories on slashdot that don't interest me, and don't hit my 'geek' buttons, but I do recognize them as valid topics and gently pass over them to the next. I do think the 'everyone has a different view so you can't make that call' argument a tad weak. People do have their differences, there are overlaps and the boundaries are fuzzy, but anyone who can take a step back and make a reasoned argument should not cause anyone 'serious offence'. Perhaps a little on the sensitive side?

So pop-culture making references to geek culture makes it geek? I don't buy it. As mentioned, I do enjoy family guy, have have watched a fair few more than one or two episodes. Just as pretty much all other pop-culture, it certainly does have plenty of references to geek culture. I recall an episode where Luis learned kung-fu, should this article also be in a kung-fu journal?

Expecting a site with a defined topic 'News for nerds', and more importantly an inferred audience type to stick to its agenda is hardly an unreasonable request. Slashdot is made by the audience, so I don't see how an audience member (me) taking some time to voice my opinion on how I would rather not see it move further in this direction should cause 'serious offence'. I did not say 'wtf is this doing on slashdot, what are the editors smoking, slashdot suxs' I briefly laid out my reasons without getting too bogged down.

I'm interested in how you get 'This topic shouldn't be on the agenda' to 'inference of no valid reason to consider yourself a geek, frat boy'.Particularly with someone who takes 'serious offense when people try to pretend that their view of geekdom is the only valid one'.

Perhaps you should consider tightening your argument skills before mounting ill advices ad hominem attacks.

Cleveland isn't typecast yet

Quagmire makes a great supporting character but he's too well-defined in the show's universe. Will each week feature Quagmire trying to get it on with a random neighbor? Maybe a special feature, "Quagmire on Holiday" where he tries to get it on with other vacationers? Too predictable, too easy. Quagmire's role limits his future depth.

Meanwhile, Cleveland is the quiet voice of reason, but he's easily drawn into Peter's (or anyone else's) antics. Who is Cleveland? What makes him tick? We don't know the answers to these kinds of questions, so it's easier for a producer to generate a good 40, 50 episodes around a name we know whose decisions and arcs aren't already limited by his history.

I haven't looked into it, but I'm certain the writers of Family Guy are around my age (early 40s) and watched the same entertainment as I did. The cultural references thrown in often seem just for me - from "The Incredible Hulk" TV show closing music, with Stewie on the road hitchhiking, to Peter being a game character in Tron. I love it.

So when I read they are spinning off Cleveland's character (whom I don't really care for, BTW), my first thought was of "All in the Family" begetting "The Jeffersons".

When watching American Dad, all I can think of is how it's more or less an extension of family guy as it is. I don't think there is anymore room for another one of Seth McFarlane's shows on TV.

Cleveland? Give me a break! He's got to be the worst Family Guy character, other than maybe Chris Griffin.

I have to agree, a spinoff set around Quagmire or the guy in the wheelchair would be much better. Or, what about the old pervert from the Griffins' neighbourhood?
