Opera Launches Facial Gesture Capability
cstrep writes "Eight years ago, Opera introduced Mouse Gestures as a way to speed up your interaction with the browser, and focus on what's important: Content. In 2005, Voice Navigation was introduced, and more recently we've worked with Nintendo to create a browser that takes full advantage of the 'Wiimote' and later, the touchscreen in the DSi.
Today Opera introduces Face Gestures, a revolutionary technology designed to make interacting with Opera easier on computers with cameras. Face Gestures lets you perform frequent browsing operations with natural and easy to make face gestures. By using an internal technology dubbed 'Face Observation Opera Language,' we are able to recognize pre-determined facial expressions and match them to commands on the Opera browser."

Personally I can't say I'd miss April fools if it went, there is such a bad shit vs funny ratio in 'fools' but fortunately a sense of perspective stops me really giving a damn, YMMV.

A fairly easy facial expression to recognise would be the "leaning forward and screwing up the eyes"... the browser could automatically zoom in and/or enlarge the font size.
This technology was originally patented by Atypical Peripheral Recognition Intelligence Laboratories as "Facial Orientation Observation Language".

If you are going to post an April Fool's joke, it's probably best not to use "aprilfool" as one of the keywords.

My personal rule for practical jokes is that they are fun provided nobody involved would mind being the victim. Based on what I'm reading, you're too thin skinned to enjoy them so I'd neither play one on you nor expect one from you. But there are plenty of people on this earth who don't associate a small joke at someone else's expense as abject humiliation or a sign that the victim is a moron. I've been on both ends of practical jokes. To me, being the occasional victim is worth the enjoyment others get from them. And pulling one off is worth the effort given the victim is a good sport about it.

I think the editors here probably won't ever sink to the depths that was OMG Ponies! ever again, as that lasted 24 hours longer than was funny (and probably had a noticeable impact on traffic).

I personally look forward to Slashdot's April Fools jokes each year. There's often some quite funny self-deprecating humor they report on...
If it were real, it would be pretty stupid. Why would anybody want to keep their face in a given position to use their browser? Not to mention outside distractions causing reactions that would throw off the browser. All in all, Google's CADIE is the cooler joke.
I know that when I come to /. on April 1, what I'm looking for is an even-handed, discerning discussion of the ethics of comedy, with due attention to qualifications and ramifications.

I like the name of the technology, 'Face Observation Opera Language'. Cause that's what you'd look like using it.

I hope this has a low-pass filter, otherwise people with a facial tic might wind up somewhere unexpected.
It would actually be kinda cool if it would minimize your browser whenever you looked/walked away, and restore it when you look back.
Too bad this is a joke, I would love it if while reading a web page I stare at a link for more than 3 seconds the browser follows that link. Obviously needs to be thought out but hey we can create the security hole now, and patch later.

One wonders if they'll have hand gestures in the next revision. The "Find Porn" one could simply be the use of the "wanker" hand gesture, which is most appropriate. :D
They exist slashdot readers have fnord learned to block them out. Think of it like a well tuned spam filter fnord for the mind.
I'm sure they thought it was a great idea when they changed the calendar system, but did the have any idea the far reaching consequences it would have? Such as strange stories about F.O.O.L. features. The fools, what have they done?!

While this is obviously april fools, something like this could introduce some useful feedback to page creators. Confusion, anger and frustration could help them fix those stories broken across 6 pages with a million ads.

On the bright side, your browser will now be able to recognize when you are .. "finished", and close those pages for you (well, after bookmarking, according to how you set your preferences).
This will turn out to be a great idea, until the first virus hits it designed to recognize certain facial gestures, and automatically upload the images to flickr.

I've got facial tics and keep ending up at sites I don't want to visit. For instance, it's taken me over an hour to post this comment because it keeps whisking me off to Richard Simmon's fan site. I've bought "Sweating to the Oldies" and a pink wife beater in hopes that it wouldn't make me visit again, but I now find myself as a lifetime member. Some kind of confirmation would be welcome.

I honestly don't think this technology is too far off however.
I'd recommend demanding a refund of your tuition. This technology has been around for at least 30 years.

With the influx of web cams it does seem reasonable to have the ability to control my web browsing with facial expressions.
