PETA To Launch Pornography Website
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are planning on launching an adult oriented website to help protect animals through a mix of animal suffering footage and porn. I'm not sure how mixing the two will win hearts, minds, or naughty bits, but Lindsay Rajt, PETA's associate director of campaigns, seems to think it's a good idea. She says, "We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site."

In the 80s, when we were teens sneaking copies of Hustler away from older brothers or swapping with neighbors I remember seeing several issues with both porn and horrible war footage.
Flynt was not afraid to publish articles showing exactly what kind of destruction the US was, or had been, wreaking overseas. And he showed the cost it had on the soldiers as well.
The nudity and sex were not the obscenity. The murder of civilians and the treatment of those who had signed up to serve the country was the real obscenity.

Either way, I don't see how this works out well for their message. How about online streaming of tv shows that hulu wont stream for free - supplemented with peta ads? Or, a paypal service - watch 15 minutes of peta ads, take a quiz on their policies, pass, and get $5? The porn angle is just too strange.

First off, when it comes to art at Burning Man, pretty much anything goes. However, PETA's "art" consisted of a film loop of pigs being beaten to death, shown on a 15-foot screen, complete with sound. They placed this on the Esplanade, Burning Man's "main street." My camp was next door, and while we didn't actually do any of the following pranks, thinking them up was great fun.
Our first prank was to go over with a plate of veal chops:
Us: "Hi, guys. We're from BBQ camp, next door, and ... we're full. Would you like some veal chops? We're just going to throw them out."
Our next prank:

this is a common misconception. PETA kills more animals than any other organization because they are a home of last resort - most animals they find are too sick and/or abused to be kept alive, and facilitating their deaths peacefully rather than making them suffer is their goal. Also, they take in animals that other shelters can't keep - animals too aggressive, or old, or sick, etc.

That article is decidedly anti-PETA but it still somehow manages to support my argument. While I don't agree with their methods I fail to see how even blowing up a facility in order to free animals being tested on counts as Terrorism(tm) if you're not targeting people. Prior to the patriot act it would have been considered a simple criminal act, destruction of property or something more severe but not *terrorism.*

Terrorism doesn't have to target people by direct violence. So long as the intent is to force others into accepting some political or ideological point through fear (whether of violence against them, or destruction against their property), and it is practiced systematically, it is terrorism.

They're doing to humans what farmers do to cows when they brand them. They're feeding them poisonous plants and then branding them to produce a pain response and associating it with the poison. In our case they're associating sex with animal abuse. Sex produces very strong feelings in humans, if you combine that with a extremely opposite feeling (such as sadness and/or disgust) you will be quite a bit more likely to remember it.
They're training humans to have a extreme disgust for animal abuse by conditioning the with the stimulus of sex.
This is remarkably cruel and may result in a lot of people becoming sexually impotent due to the fact that they can't get aroused, because whenever they do, they think about animal brutality... funny how that works.

There's a plain logic in PETA's plan: where do we get the most exposure (woops)? What's the bulk of internet traffic about? Does sex sell?
The thing about radicals is, while they're associated with madness, delusions and confused thinking, they just rely more on logic. You take a train of thought and follow it to the logical conclusion. Of course the critics won't see it, since all silly conclusions can only be caused by bad logic.

Take the case of a mother cat and her perfectly adoptable young kittens at a vet's office in North Carolina. The PETA criminals showed up promising to find them homes, immediately killed them in the back of the van and dropped them in a dumpster behind a Piggly Wiggly. This was not an isolated incident.
They also just by default kill pit bulls. For the record, I met a very nice one this weekend, very gentle and playful with my kids, and perfectly obedient to his owner. The PETA would kill it if they got their hands on it. PETA encourages all shelters to enact this policy.

PETA's real position (actually quite reasonable):
Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the United States each year. Even though some are reclaimed or adopted, nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go.(1) Shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until their natural deaths—they would be forced to live in cramped cages or kennels for years, lonely and stressed, and other animals would have to be turned away because there would not be room for them.
Turning unwanted animals loose to roam the streets is not a humane option. If they don’t starve, freeze, get hit by a car, or die of disease, they may be tormented and possibly killed by cruel juveniles or picked up by dealers who obtain animals to sell to laboratories.
Good and Bad Solutions
Because of the high number of unwanted companion animals and the lack of good homes, sometimes the most humane thing that a shelter worker can do is give an animal a peaceful release from a world in which dogs and cats are often considered “surplus” and unwanted. PETA, The American Veterinary Medical Association, and The Humane Society of the United States concur that an intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital administered by a trained professional is the kindest, most compassionate method of euthanizing animals. The American Humane Association considers this to be the only acceptable method of euthanasia for cats and dogs in animal shelters.
Injections into the hearts of conscious animals are not acceptable. Inhalants, decompression, drowning, electrocution, shooting, and other methods are also unacceptable because they rarely provide an instant death and cause suffering before death occurs.
Some drugs can cause discomfort if injected too quickly or at too high a dose, and some, such as strychnine, can cause animals to experience violent convulsions, muscle contractions, or cardiac arrest.
Nitrous oxide, halothane, and carbon monoxide gases can be expensive and unreliable and can cause irritation or excitability in animals. Carbon monoxide poisoning causes animals to suffer horribly while they are slowly suffocated. They often scream and go into convulsions while struggling for air. Carbon monoxide poisoning has been outlawed in California, Tennessee, Maryland, and Rhode Island but is still used in many animal shelters throughout the U.S.(2,3)
The physical methods used to kill animals in shelters include shooting, electrocution, and decompression. The obvious problem with shooting is the potential for extreme pain if the person handling the gun is not competent, if the animal is struggling, or if the bullet is deflected and the animal survives. Electrocution can be extremely painful and traumatic and doesn’t always work.
Decompression chambers simulate an ascent to thousands of feet above sea level in a matter of minutes. At many shelters that use this method, decompression occurs at speeds up to 15 times faster than the recommended rate. At this speed, the gases in animals’ sinuses, middle ears, and intestines expand quickly, causing considerable discomfort or severe pain.(4) Accidental recompression can occur when equipment malfunctions, when there is a personnel error, or when small animals become trapped in air pockets. They must then be put through the procedure all over again.
Until dog and cat overpopulation is brought under control through spaying and neutering, we must prevent the suffering of unwanted animals in the most responsible and humane way possible. Euthanasia, performed properly, is often the most compassionate option.

When animal companions become very sick and are suffering with no hope of recovery, and they seem incapable of truly enjoying life, it may be time to provide them with a peaceful death through euthanasia.
