News From Apple's iPhone Event
Apple is currently announcing various things about a new iPhone; the CNN Live has coverage as it is happening. Watch for updates as more information comes in. For those of you who like to read instead of watch, PC Magazine is^W was^W is running a live commentary stream (it broke and then unbroke). The New York Times also has a working live stream which seems more reliable.
Update: 10/04 19:04 GMT by U L :Unexpectedly, Apple did not announce an iPhone 5, but rather an incremental update. CNet has a decent article about the features of the iPhone 4S. Additionally, all major carriers except T-Mobile will be getting the phone October 14th.
Twitter reports that /. has a thread that says that CNN has some info about some iPhone stuff.
A marvel of modern communication
I'm shocked, utterly shocked. Oh, not about anything in the presentation, I'm shocked that Slashdot actually got this story up when the event was happening and didn't link to a recording three days from now.
Maybe we could wait until the announcement is finished for the story to get posted.

Sales of ironically overlarge non-functional fashion glasses, skinny pants, and funny hats will concomitantly go up in direct proportion to iPhone 5 sales.
Yeah, Apple has to be a bunch of idiots to drive the smartphone and tablet markets like they do. And everyone who would use such a product is clearly retarded.

Another day, another dumb Apple product.
As an AAPL shareholder I don't think they're dumb. :)
OMG, Steve Jobs' cousin just announced the iPhone 5.
I can't believe they topped the iPhone 4.
iPhone 5 is gayer than ever!!!
When I said I wanted faster news for slashdot, it didn't mean (non)news about future news. This post is just an advertisement for CNN coverage of the event rather then any relevant information about the iphone (other then a gathering of useless iphone rumors to make it seem like an actual article).
on this hype? Best to ignore is all...
But why oh why must there be a slashvertisement for a media event to build hype and excitement? Whatever the product, let's wait until a few facts can be gleaned and the hype-blurb safely ignored.
We might as well just demand equal hype for Dr. Bob's iChiropractic iApp for iOS which will iChange your iLife for the iBetter. It would be as reliable and accurate as the typical media event surrounding the launch of a mass-market consumer product.

Seriously. I respect Slashdot for not mentioning this stupid event prior to it happening. I still heard about it from EVERY OTHER FUCKING NEWS SOURCE (including "real news" sites like NPR - what the fuck, NPR? - and niche news sites that have nothing to do with Apple).
Hey, Slashdot: if you really are upset about Apple suing any phone with rounded corners, maybe you should just give this damned event a pass and pretend it never happened.
FSM knows I'm trying to, but enough people are telling me about it ANYWAY to make it difficult. Can I have one refuge from the Apple zombies? Just one? Please?
Quick! I need to click the link for the Apple story, then post about how I don't care! This is a great use of my time!

/. should really be covering that auction of crumbs that fell from the One True Beard of RMS [pbuhb] instead.
Nope, just another crippled product.
It seems to be all of them. Gizmodo, Ars, PCMag...

Apple announces something that everyone has already used before, and already exists.
Audience members applaud, and for some reason people laud it as revolutionary, innovative, and new.

Apparently, to get the live CNN video feed, I have to install the Octoshape Grid Delivery Enhancement to Flash. No thanks. If I don't install it, I get the stream starting at the beginning.
If I used a sig over again, would anyone notice?
Apparantly apple's next product is the iSuck.
The iSuck is a revolutionary product- that uses vacuum forces to suck dirt off carpets. Really cool- only $500 for the entry level model. It's amazing how they keep coming up with these brand new ideas.

Didn't they have a "Leave one in a bar then send goons to recover it and rough people up" event for this release?
Well done Apple, you got the whole world's media to have a freekout over an old phone with a new processor (which isn't even really new even). Next step, sell a toaster, label it "revolutionary", sell it rather overpriced and see how many sales you get.

Yep. Which brings up another interesting new feature of iOS 5.
Remember the whole debacle about how your iPhone tracked you everywhere you went?
This is a new, built-in, non-removeable feature. If you want to figure out where you left your iPhone prototype, you can just hit the "locate" button on iTunes, and presto, your iPhone's geocoordinates are set out over the Internet! And stored on Apple's servers! And can be automatically shared with your friends!
Wait, weren't people fucking pissed about this? And now it's a feature?! That can't be removed?!!
Awesome. At least now we know why the hired Apple cop impersonators were able to find that phone so quickly. (In case you were wondering what this had to do with the parent post.)

A year and a half later, all that they can offer is a slightly better camera, faster CPU, and universal (GSM+CDMA) mobile. :(
Most people including myself were hopefully for the thinner design, larger edge-to-edge 4 inch screen, metal back, NFC, 3D glassless display, 4G wireless data, etc. that were mentioned in the iPhone 5 rumours/hype. What a huge let down. No innovative must have features offer! Definitely not worth an update over the popular iPhone 4.
It also sucks that you still can't play video podcasts in the iPod Nano like you used to 2 generations ago!
In fact this entire iPhone+iPod refresh really is a big disappointment for me. I guess Apple does not think that hardware innovation is important anymore! What a great way to disappoint your fans, and have them look at other platforms that at least have some more frequent hardware improvements.
Cue dickheads making derogatory statements about iOS device owners for no good reason other than an assumed - and misplaced - feeling of technical superiority.

This 4S phone might have the horsepower and usability to pull it off, at least some of the basic augmented reality applications?
Your right... They should be a site that that consolidated tech based news across web to cover such things such as new product releases of technology.
Perhaps we should name it after some some part of a basic mainframe commands but obscure enough to to keep some people out. Maybe DividePeriod.org
Lets face the facts Ladies and Gentlemen...
Slashdot is a tech web site... Apple is the big name in tech... Information will be spread to the site.
If something is so important that you feel the need to post it on the internet... It probably isn't that important.
Apple is the biggest (technology) company in the world. Thus, it's product releases are going to be covered by (technology) websites everywhere.
I feel dumber for having to explain that.
So Apple disappointed us with no iPhone 5 in June. Now 4 months later they disappoint again with a warmed-over iPhone 4S that might be worth getting if you have no iPhone at all, but not get locked into a new upgrade contract otherwise. Meanwhile there are multiple Android LTE choices available. Has Apple lost their magic and now just wants to squeeze out every last dollar as long as the current iPhone continues to sell? Or is Apple showing the inherent weakness of one company against everyone else when it comes to innovation. Even in the best year(s) there was only one iPhone model to choose from.
"It's the height of ridiculousness to say for those 9 lines you get hundreds of millions."
Can somebody explain that a little more? Is that really unique or not?

Fact: AAPL has been consistently going up for ages now. They have a great lineup now, and for the foreseeable future. They have a ridiculous amount of cash on hand, and time-and-time again the bitching of /.'rs preaching the "Apple is doomed" mantra has been proven wrong.
So it goes down 3%. BFD! Considering how high my AAPL holdings have gone up since I bought a bunch more - during the 2008 meltdown - ignoring the whining and bitching from folks like you about wasting my money, I am quite happy with the current level and after phantards like you finish your weekly anti-apple propaganda, the stock will continue to lead the industry. Quite an underwhelming event, huh? Did anyone really think Apple would come out with something that would (as the hype suggested) drive its owner to the airport, babysit its kids or defend against a home invasion?
Truth be told, the 4S represents a nice evolution of a pretty darn good phone. No more, no less.

Releasing a product that looks exactly the same means no one will upgrade. i-boys and girls have a need to manifest to others that they have a newer better phone - now they will have a phone that looks the same. Companies need to manage expectations before product releases - Apple is going down.

Er... everyone with any ability to read between the lines knew there'd be no 5 today. That teardrop design would be stupid for gaming and landscape view. No hardware for that 5 design has been seen in the wild, while loads of leaks of an updated 4 body have. All rumours about the 5 seem to have stemmed from one case manufacturer.
hey, wait! That sounds like some sort of evil P2P media pirating app! This is just screaming for TPB! get hacking boys!
Best model name as of yet, IMO.
Actually, I'm not surprised at all, and kind of wish the fanboys who are raging that the new phone doesn't shit rainbows and have a '5' in its name would sell off more of their stock and depress the value even more so that I can afford to buy some AAPL for myself.
Not sure I understand the business reasons fully for not allowing T-Mobile to carry the iPhone 4S. If there was any carrier who really needs this phone they are the ones who need it most; especially in light of the fact that there is no guarantee that the AT&T / T-Mobile merger will occur. Perhaps its just sour apples on my part, since I really was hoping to finally move away from my Blackberry.
Regards,
MBC1977,
I think this explains Job's resignation. You don't hold a special event for software called iOS 5, then fail to produce the iPhone 5 that goes with it. I'm guessing Job's bailed as soon as it became clear to him that Cook was unable to deliver the iPhone 5 on schedule.
This will create a lot of problems. I have an old 3GS with newly cracked screen. I really need an update and love my iPhone. iPhone 4S it is - but while I might normally max out memory, I'll do that next time -- since that seems to be the clear imperative here - not yet, not yet, wait a few months...maybe less than a year even... then you'll have a device you want and can hold on too for a couple of years. If i can make it a year on 16 G, I probably should.
What does that mean for carriers? I wonder if they aren't pushing some of this? The late release means an inordinate number of customers are off contract and can change carriers. So now we get locked into a 2 year deal before we see the iPhone 5 - and the carriers get a boon in sales when so many upgrade to the real new iPhone 5 handset next year. It's a double whammy windfall likely good for all of them. Not so good for consumers though.
I doubt this had much to do with it though. I just think Apple failed to deliver. It didn't beat the street - it didn't even surprise the street. It just missed.
Oh, and Tim - you're CEO. You're the one that unveils the flag ship products - like you're proud of them, NOT your assistants.

ok, was it a big huge improvement? No it wasn't. Rumours are Rumours, not facts. I have a rumour that the next iphone will come with a Kleenex dispenser to wipe away your tears...
I have an iPhone 4, and I highly doubted 99% of the rumours. larger screen? please... the iphone is already big enough. the rumour I was rooting for was for the iPhone Mini. a smaller screen, a smaller package...
As for whether Apple thinks innovation is important or not. look at the history. even with the iPhones, the first iPhone was released, then the 2G was released, not much improvement other than a bit of hw improvements. then the iPhone 3G came out. and there was much rejoicing huge huge upgrade! wow!. a year later they released the iterative 3GS and there was much poo-pooing about the lack of commitment to innovation. then the next year the 4 came out. Ohh ahh... Retina Display! fancy! Big upgrade! yay Apple does care about innovation! A year later the 4S comes out, boo hiss... come on really? you couldn't anticipate that? It's the same reason the iPad2 wasn't a huge upgrade. The iPad 3 will probably be a bigger upgrade than the 2. This this their upgrade cycle, and every single time it's a surprise it seems.
Sure, no stock goes up forever. But as you point out, AAPL has been consistently going up for ages. This has resulted in many people considering the stock "overbought". So if you bought stock in 2008, you should take your money now, deposit 95% of it in a savings account and gamble 5%, e.g. on shorting Raiffeisen or Commerzbank. As that will probably be good for your assets, and AAPL probably sees some downward adjustments during the next few months, you can buy even more AAPL for Christmas! (Disclaimer: Don't trust random internet people with your finances.)

Fine, don't be impressed by the better camera that can record 1080p @ 30 fps. Don't be impressed by an up to twice as fast cpu that still gives plenty battery time. Don't be impressed that you can use the phone anywhere on the planet now that it has gsm and cdma. I'm sure there are other phones that do all this, and maybe even better.
But, me, I'm buying this phone on day one, just to get my hands on Siri. If it works only half as good as in the demo it is a game changer for me.
RIP Dr. Bob.
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
Despite all the nerd rage that Apple did not deliver on all the random rumors posted by those not in the know, it's a good phone and they'll sell like freakin' hotcakes.
Some privacy policy Slashdot.
And they are actually very smart. Since there are SO many expectations on the iPhone 5, and they don't have a fully cooked product, they will be releasing an iPhone 4S.
IT was know there wouldn't be an iPhone 5 anouncement. This isn't surprising at all, in fact it's was expected.

One thing that I believe is important: even after today, the 3GS is still sold by Apple, it is now the cheapest available IOS5 device. This means it is still supported for another year.
Good news for all the 3GS owners.
iOS 5 on iPhone 4S is great! That's because it's kind of like an Android phone of about a year ago.
Now Apple just needs to patent all the features they copied, then sue everybody, and in a year or two, they will be considered to have innovated all those features.
As an AAPL stockholder, you should be pissed off, as their stock just tanked. Down 3% during this press conference, and it has been steadily going down for the past few months.
Sigmund Freud could probably explain it better than I can, but if you bought AAPL a few months ago, you are up quite a bit.
Wow, to think I came to slashdot in order to have an informed discussion about Siri, the seemingly impressive voice recognition tech. Nope, all fanboys. Slashdot definitely ain't what it used to be. :-\
A million monkeys and this is the best sig they could come up with...
How is that any different from all previous iPhones, Android phones, desktops, etc?
Are not all upgrades incremental? Otherwise it would be a new product.
Make SELinux enforcing again!
Seriously - Apple WILL BE working on the iPhone 5 - and it will come.
and if Google announces the Nexus prime and ICS on the 11th - with like an HD screen and dual core CPU
It wont be streets ahead of apple - no great game changer or anything....
and then if the iPhone 5 comes out sometime next year (6 months maybe ?) with quad core and some real unnexpected innovation they will be way ahead again.
and the quad core hardware is nearly there I gather... and who knows what else they are working - they take their time and do produce game changers...
(having said that - I dont like the apple walled approach - Im an adroid man myself so I dont mind if this prediction is wrong !)
Beyond that, it seems to me that a dual-core CPU (and GPU) is much more than just a "faster CPU". That, plus a dual-mode, spatial antenna, 8MP backlit sensor, 5-element lens, all in the same package with essentially the same battery life is pretty remarkable, especially at the same price. That plus iOS5 makes this a non-trivial update. It's at least as big an update as the 3GS was over the 3G.
AND, don't sell Apple's implementation of Siri short until you give it a good look. Cnet is a good place to start. It's WAY beyond voice recognition. It requires the A5 CPU.
Knee jerk much? he never said Apple was a bunch of idiots.
Nor did he claim anyone was retarded. That's all you.

The Kruger Dunning explains most post on
What happens is that Apple invents a concept, then every other manufacturer gets on the bandwagon offering the same basic thing, but with bigger graphics, faster processor etc, then boasting about how good they are.
So enter the 3GS and the 4S, to catch up with the copycat's platforms, while Apple are meanwhile busy inventing the next market paradigm.
I call it the "Copy Apple" cycle: we saw it with the Mac, the Mouse, the iPod, the smartphone: Apple synthesizes a new technology (perhaps from existing tech, but that's neither here nor there), every body else jumps on the bandwagon, but all they can do to differentiate themselves is offer faster CPU, more graphics, a mouse with more buttons, whatever: it's the same copied Apple technology.
Apple.com was down due to some sort of DNS attack after the announcements. All you could get was an "access denied" error.

my 3GS I have to hit the home button, slide to unlock, put in my access code, find my camera app (which isn't hard, mind), and load it.
That's why in iOS5 they added the camera to the lock screen. so you don't have to do anything but hit the home button, then the camera button.
You'll even get that on the 3GS on the 12th... startup time will not be 1.1 seconds though.

Did yo notice that all of the commands you send it have the action you want taken, then some data?
That is fine for a technical person who is used to thinking like that but hard to use for people who do not. Siri lets you mix action and data any way, and can have multiple steps involved... watch the video for the examples they used. It's more impressive than I thought it would be.
"There is more worth loving than we have strength to love." - Brian Jay Stanley
Except that Apple is already following the RIM(job) model of being lazy and making extremely minor changes and thinking they can stay on top. That's why iOS's market share hasn't changed for over a year now while Android's market share keeps going up and up - because the companies making Android phones are innovating constantly as well as Google updating Android more than once a year with minor changes. Eventually investors will realize that Apple has peaked and that stock will start to drop - FAST.

They did just that... Problem is, the new iPhone 4S looks identical to the iPhone 4 so no one picked it up...
What gets me is why this is coming to market without any of the current "4G" technologies for all the supported carriers. According to the tech specs there's no LTE, HSPA+, or WiMax antennas. At least on Sprint it would make sense to include a WiMax antenna since they're the only ones remaining with truly unlimited data for their phones (they just capped their mobile broadband to 5GB).
