except that the blu-ray isn't owned just by sony but by many companies that are part of the blu-ray association http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/about/SupportingCompanies.html
also sony and all those other companies are part of the dvd forum as well so what makes you think that hd-dvd wouldn't have this kind of problem?
Why do you assume that the screen looks different.
because when you run a cpu intensive application your pc becomes really slow, so if you use instead your gpu the screen should become "slower" too, but probably you wouldn't even notice
As for the video card... get a Raedeon 4790. It's about 90% of the 5850 for $200.
never ever buy an ati card, they may look more powerful and cheaper than nvidia but their drivers suck, looks at tweakguides.com there is an "ati hotfix" almost every week or look at the ea/ubisoft/steam/whatever forums, there are always threads like "black screen with ati xxxx", "texture glitches with ati" etc..
Atleast in TF2 if you are on a good server people are easily banned by unique ID.
My clan has been playing Modern Warfare 2 recently and if you find a cheater the only thing you can do is back out of the match.
indeed, playing mw2 is a PITA, you can only hope that the cheater is in your squad, and VAC is doing nothing at all, maybe they'll get banned a month later but your game is already ruined, punkbuster may not be perfect but at least it kicks right away
How can game engines not take advantage of multiple cores? I had no idea this was the case, and find it very surprising given that the PS3 has 7 cores to work with. Are games so lazily programmed that they don't take advantage of that either?
this was the case a couple of years ago, nowadays all major games(dragon age, mass effect 2, battlefield bad company 2, etc..) uses my dual core at 100%
I've never seen George Walker Bush and Barack Obama in the same place at the same time. I've seen video purported to show as much, but we all know what they can do with that these days.
From what I understand, I thought each of these games on consoles, that one of the players will be the 'server' - and that the role of the EA server is matchmaking etc, but clarification would be cool.
I'm pretty certain that in all cases none of the consoles involved is acting as a server. If one was than that player could have a significant advantage due to relative latency issues. Also having a console act as a server means having to deal with NAT, firewalls and other routing/network issues - the only guaranteed way for all the consoles to see the server being if the server is public (i.e. not on a console on someone's home ISP connection) or for a public server to act as a relay for those that can't connect directly.
you are wrong, most console games don't have dedicated servers, and you can host even if you are behind a nat, they probably use something like udp hole punching
you probably missed the rage of pc call of duty players that now have to use the same matchmaking system(iwnet) as console players without dedicated servers
I don't believe pirates are likely to even be playing multiplayer in the first place. Everything is tied into Steam this time around, even for those who bought the box off the shelf.
actually before the patches it was playable even with pirated copies of the game, now you get kicked after a few minutes of playing, but you can still use the older version even if it will take a lot of time to find out other people with the same version
To be fair, there is very little evidence that EA could, in fact, improve their bottom line by steadily generating quality product. Since they've never managed to steadily generate quality product, we'll never know.
actually EA changed quite a lot in the past few years, take a look at need for speed for example, they were making the same shit every year, this year they changed the developer team and they probably made the best racing game ever, second only to gran turismo. They also produced other great games made by DICE(mirror's edge, battlefield) or BioWare(mass effect, dragon age)
now take a look at activision, they fucked up pc players with no dedicated servers, if that wasn't enough they asked steam to ban/revoke every key bought from sites like g2play, just because you can get them at half the price, like they didn't made enough money with the game already(550 millions $ in 5 days)
the problem is that Qt should run on many different platforms so it cannot depend on many external libraries that probably would run only on unix-like system, this way is much easier for developers to deploy their app everywhere
Okay, one more: Too many folks out there have jacked/pirated/whatever copies of XP installed (courtesy of friends, relatives, TPB, whoever), and will likely wait for a jacked/pirated/whatever copy of Windows 7 to come out.
the pirated version has been out since august and like vista it's much easier to crack than xp since you don't have to worry about wga
What happens when Good and evil combine? And why would anyone buy a computer of all things from a company that has placed rootkits on their paying customers' gear?
This doesn't make me think more highly of Sony, it tarnishes Google in my view.
this has been said many times but people don't listen, sony is a huge company with many departments that don't even know each other, if sony music does something it doesn't mean that the sony that makes laptops wants to do the same
Funding for libraries is usually tight. If fewer people are using the library, it will become even tighter. I can foresee a day in the not too distant future when many libraries (especially in smaller towns and cities) can't complete in light of the availability of books from sources like Google Books.
it's the price of evolution, things change, what about farrier and blacksmith, we don't use horses anymore to go around, hopefully sooner or later we won't use paper anymore too
I had the authentication problem yesterday for just a couple of hours, the real problem is that everything else is bugged, I've completed one of the training mission with full score, yet at the end it says that I failed it completely, I've tried to play online but after joining a server and choosing side, I couldn't choose any class, so I changed server and it was even worse nobody could choose any side, so I changed again and with all other servers after the loading screen it sent me back to the menu. I tried again the next day, I choose a server with a ping of 32ms yet it was lagging like hell and I even spawned without a weapon, I had to find a dead body to steal his
Since my company doesn't have the budget, I have tried to find something free but I failed, in the end I installed comodo av which is free, it can't be remotely managed, but it's far better than clamav, I've scheduled an automatic scan at 1pm during launch break, and it does automatic updates too, if you need to administer it remotely just install vnc on each client, 20 aren't that much
I was skeptical with new ui too, but you can easily have the old one in amarok2, just hide the left panel and enlarge the right one, then you'll get something 90% similar to amarok 1.4
Think of it this way-- would you rather have the Nvidia 285 for $330, or the 4890 for $230? They perform the same, and drivers are not an issue.
I have to disagree with this, a friend of mine had a crossfire of two 4870x2 and drivers were a huge problem, for example flight simulator x has a lot of known graphical glitches also when we played left 4 dead online he always crashed at least once because the ati driver crashed or they caused a bsod, each driver update fixed some bugs but also introduced a lot of new bugs
Now he buyed a single gtx285 and it's performing better than two 4870x2 without any crashes
Ummm I'm pretty sure thats the ability to act as a wifi access point, which windows can't do yet.
you can do that on windows too, but like on linux you can't set the wifi card in master mode with all drivers, some support it and some don't
for example I have the wifi-ap edition of an asus mb that can do that

I wonder if and when we will ever see an equivalent of FAT64, to get around file size issues.
it's called exFAT, but the problem is that most devices like the ps3 can only read fat32, and afaik exFAT isn't supported by linux either

After all, why sell a customer a working product when you can repeatedly sell them replacements for a defective product?
Ah, the joys of capitalism. My 35 year old Soviet radio in the kitchen still works perfectly.
in soviet russia the radio hear you
now they'll sell his old liver at half the price on the apple store
just press spacebar if you want to skip the talks

And Age of Empires 2 was released back in Feb 1996, which makes it 13 years old now.
dude age of empires 1 is from 1997 and 2 is from 1999

Vista is ok but I don't see any specific advantage over XP Home apart from being able to alter ACLs with a GUI instead of CACLS
you can change ACLs with the gui on xp too, at least on xp pro, you just have to disable simple file sharing
