Interestingly, this problem is reduced by allowing players to have their own servers. I've had a variety of servers for different games. Somebody comes in and appears to be hacking, they're gone. Racism; gone. Disrespectful; gone.
Punkbuster-type services and exploit patches are useful and absolutely necessary but the easiest way to avoid those problems is to get familiar with a clan or group that has their own servers and admin's that are there frequently enough to do something about it. Even with a game that is frequently updated, the exploits will never cease. Like for instance, throwing c4 30 feet in bad company 2... That's an actively patched game and that exploit has been around for at least 6 months...
Do we actually know that global warming has been affected by our use of fossil fuels? No we don't, we have a great deal of evidence supporting that we do have some kind of effect though. If the current climate concerns turn out to not exist, have we wasted money trying to understand it? Absolutely not. We have tremendous evidence supporting that the earth has gone through some pretty crazy climate swings and even more exotic changes like polar direction variations and dramatic magnetic field fluctuations. We also know that very small shifts in temperature can produce huge shifts in ocean levels and weather patterns.
The earth's climate and specifically what effects it is something we need to understand. We need to be able to consciously alter our environment to produce the neccessary changes to maintain the conditions we require. If Human beings survive on this planet for more than a couple thousand years, The geological record shows that we are likely to experience something catastrophic. Be it an event like the Yellowstone caldera, temperature rises that melt the ice caps, or even an Meteorite, we must learn how to tailor our environment to suit us.
For this reason I just don't get anyone being critical of climate change research. Are the current concerns possibly not real? Ofcourse! But if you think this planet will continue to suit us well without our being able to actively alter it in the future, that is just plain naive.
This post just got me to check my Games for windows live account. I've had 400 points sitting around for a while. And guess what I forgot about it...
Wait... I have credits on my WII account too. And both of these accounts have just barely too little to actually buy anything and I have to buy a set number of points, not the amount remaining for a particular item.
There's no good reason why they can't just hook up with paypal or something like that...
Every time I read one of these stories I think of my little cousins... They are a full generation younger than I but still my cousins. They have been raised by two wonderful and caring people; An evangelical minister and his wife. Somehow, despite their caring and the love for GOD they have passed on, these three children are for all purposes, ILLITERATE!!!! The eldest, age 12, somehow made it to grade 6 without being capable of reading. They were sent to an evangelical school where the teachings of the Bible trumped basic skills.
Fortunately, they are now in public school. The 12 year old has been brought back 2 grades and the two little ones brought back 1 grade. "This was a concession as the school felt that all three children should be brought back further" They will have to suffer the the stigma of being the "stupid" kids in their classes. They will have to work their butts off just to reach the same level of understanding as their peers.
This anti-evolution movement is part of a much bigger, much scarier problem in The United States. It is actually an anti-intellectualism movement and it scares the crap out of me. Last year in Texas there was a school board trying to remove references of Thomas Jefferson from History texts because of his deist beliefs. They were also trying to refer to the Slave Trade as the "Atlantic Triangular Trade."
Ignorance is alive and well in this country. And it's literally breeding...
improve the teams performance. What they found improved the teams performance most was having members that are conscious of each others needs and aware of each others emotional state.
This applies to this situation because you are ignoring this aspect of your interaction with your coworkers. Sure, Steve McAsshat may drive you up the wall but as an employee and coworker you can only improve how you interact with this person. Lunches and light hearted interaction improves this.
I'm sorry get over yourself and be a part of the team. If you work at Wendy's and everyone around you is a moron, that is something YOU can still fix. Don't work at Wendy's, get an education and go to work with more educated morons...
I just wish people would take more responsibility for their own role and how they can improve hit. Hiding away isn't going to improve your performance and it sure as hell isn't gonna help you progress in your respective career... If you can't interact with your peers than you are ignoring their needs and you are not a professional...
Don't forget, science IS cool and it's just very difficult to convey that to the average person. If calling the Higgs "The God Particle" piques some kids interest because it sounds really cool then I have no problem with it. If it causes someboody to say "what do you mean god particle?" Then I am all for it.
It attracts attention to something I am very happy the general public is now aware of.
The capabilities of DX 11 and OpenGL 4.1 make the modern consoles look like a joke. It is interesting you bring up Steam. Gabe Newell referred to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors as the first step toward a console-like experience on a PC. It's just a matter of a couple years "2014" Until the vast majority of PC games are playable on low to high end systems.
Just go get yourself a PC, if you love the console controller, go get a 360 controller with PC adapter...
Tablets are potentially a great portable gaming device. They won't replace PC's anytime soon for many practical reasons but that doesn't mean that a tablet can't be a great portable gaming device.
For instance, The Asus EEE EP121 http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=QhWKR7Fmv4jDLbBY
This is a pretty powerful tablet. Heavier than the Ipad or Ipad 2 but incredibly potent. If they come out with a variant that includes a sandy bridge processor, then we are getting into a realm where gaming on a tablet is very real. Gabe Newell of Valve/Steam referred to Sandy Bridge as a processor that makes a console experience possible on a PC or Mac. This is what they should focus on. A tablet that runs the same OS as the main system. Capable graphics that can run new generation games at scaled back settings. This way you could for instance have steam on your tablet and your PC. Play the same game on either, just with a different quality experience but portable.
Sony already had the psx emulator removed from the app store. "Emulation" like we have seen in past years is going to become more difficult. The games that are being emulated are now being sold for a few bucks each. This is easy money that rights-holders will be defending so I am sorry this is not a positive thing for emulation in general. You will have to pay Sony 5 bucks for crash bandicoot on your phone even if you already owned the game for the original PSX. WIth an emulator you could rip your library of old games to disk and play it through the emulator. This will not only be discouraged but everyone who makes an emulator will get sued into oblivion...
Ya know, Pink Floyd used to be one of my favorite bands. As a teenager I was introduced to Darkside of the Moon and completely blown away *in the 1990's* I used to have most of their albums but through the years after moving a lot and transitioning to what is pretty much an entirely digital collection, I haven't listened to much if any Pink Floyd. Sure an occasional song on the radio, but that's about it.
I'm glad they finally realized that their fans were evaporating due to their own silly decisions...
The new engine is almost certainly the id tech 5. Bethesda bought Id a little over a year ago and there's no reason to buy Id other than Carmack's engines. Apparently the Tech 5 engine wont be licensed outside of a very small circle.
Here's a link to some footage of RAGE which will use the same engine and the game to debut the technology:
You mean prodigious. Prodigal means something entirely different. Ya know, the prodigal son. However, I have heard that early in his life, Hawking could have been described as both prodigal and prodigious.
Whether anyone is surprised doesn't really matter. What matters is that this is proof of their intentions and motivations. Unfortunately information obtained through this manner can not be used in a legal setting. However, now that there are documents clearly showing intent and that there is a story making the rounds, hopefully a few more people won't cave to this kind of extortion and public outrage over these practices can continue to build.
They first showed up when Steve wasn't around and his wife said no, they couldn't enter the house, that they had to wait for Steve. She left then they returned to the hose and persuaded the grandmother to let them in while they were fully aware that they were not welcome in the home then went to work dismantling his property...
Not quite a break-in no, but if someone did that in my house and I came back home to find they had dismantled something of value to me... Nerd rage would be an understatement.
Being a 3D artist with a fine arts background, if you are trying to teach artist basic elements of game design, I think it would be best to pair an artist with a comp sci major. The comp sci major can handle many of the technicalities of getting content into a game. Most artists who lack a technical background are going to be intimidated just by the process of creating assets and learning how to use the software necessary and the various requirements of doing so. The benefit for the comp sci major is insight in to how to communicate with artist. If they go into gaming they WILL be frustrated by the flakey, flighty artists. Understanding how to cope with them in a future professional environment will be very useful.
I wouldn't necessarily focus on finishing actual games. Focus on finishing assets. You'll be surprised at how excited these artists will be just seeing the helmet, gun or whatever they made show up in a level that will cement their interest in game content creation and will be a much better focus for a 50 hour course. I would also recommend the Unreal 3 engine if possible. That way, they are more likely to continue learning from what you taught them well after the class is over. They can skin a head for a game they have at home. Geeking out is an understatement regarding what their reaction will be to that. "That's mine, and it's in the game engine used for Gears of War!"
After that they'll have an interest and incentive to take it further and more technical, things like scripting, etc.

I agree that the term is abused.

Yes, I believe his dreams are about fuzzy bunnies and care bears.
Fuzzy bunnies and care bears that participate in blood orgies and promote the coming of the dark one...

Dick Cheney is that you? I didn't know you were on Slashdot...
Most of the gamers I know pass the following test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo
That's all I got...
That's all I got.
Acronyms are so passe nowadays. So it should probably be called the VOIPADIFYPOOGLE package...
somebody tries to tape these things to their wrists and jump out of a window in a leotard...

Cause Imma da frickin Bishop!
We Don' Need No Stinkin' Badgers!
My first reaction was of disgust. This is totally unethical.
However, if it works, it would give me a little more confidence in the people who actually watch and follow this drivel... Just a little...
